Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

We still have time to mess this up!

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

This blog will pay for itself.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

The revolution will be supervised.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

“But what about the lurkers?”

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Looks like we could use an open thread.

I am so behind on the news, but am about to come up for air in a day or so.  Not sure whether that’s a blessing or a curse.

What’s been going on?

Still chaos out there. Apparently, so a post about a planeful of immigrants leaving and nobody knows where they went. The administration says it’s ‘classified’. We have turned into a hell hole.

TPM is live-blogging the hearing in MA district court re the planeload of immigrants sent to South Sudan, and at least from that, it appears that matters are … developing not entirely to DHS’s advantage.

@sab: Dunno much more than I’ve read there, but my understanding is that the judge ordered that they remain in DHS custody and DHS has said they are, so presumably they could be loaded on a plane and brought back as easily as they were sent.

Most of the hearing is about DHS behavior though: contempt, false submissions, possible malfeasance.  If I were that DHS lawyer, I’d be thinking about a change of employment, state, and possibly career

It DOES appear that the courts — at least some of them — are finally beginning to treat the government as they deserve based on their recent behavior, ie as not presumptively acting in good faith or otherwise to be accorded some measure of trust or benefit of the doubt.

Let me take your mind off the awful news about immigrant renditions to South Sudan, by giving you some awful news about the US’s financial standing.

      Per Mohamed El-Erian:

      https://bsky.app/profile/elerianm.bsky.social

“The uncomfortable pairing of higher US yields and a weaker dollar persists this morning, even as gold prices climb in response to ongoing geopolitical concerns.”

The 30 year U.S. Treasury bond yield is a few 1/100’s away from a new 18 year high, while the US$ is at a 3 year low.

Translation: the Bond and Currency Markets are increasingly concerned about the US’s long term debt situation, highlighted by the GOP’s bust-out budget bill; and They are Not Amused.

@WaterGirl: Well, whether or not it’s a good change is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Ed Gainey was elected four years ago, was PGH’s first Black mayor. He is a pretty progressive Dem. He lost a primary to Corey O’Connor, who is probably more centrist. O’Connor is also the son of the former mayor.

Either way, PGH hasn’t elected a GOP mayor in almost a century.

What he said in his monologue last night was that his first grandchild was born on Monday.  However, the other guest was supposed to be Seth Rogen, and Kimmel said that Rogen was gracious about the cancellation and would be back soon.  No mention of Tapper.

Betty’s longterm Florida commitment might be really, really tested if this happens.

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) hasn’t yet ruled out running for Florida governor, eyeing a potential three-way Republican primary against Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and first lady Casey DeSantis, NBC News reports.

Baker was not a fan of the MST3K treatment, although it likely did him more good than harm.

But there does seem to be some misunderstanding from out-of-staters about PA politics. Like, apparently there’s an idea that Fetterman was thought of as progressive. The progressive wing is not a big thing here.

Federal judge rips Alina Habba a new one (LOL!)

A federal judge dismissed a case against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka after he was arrested outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center in New Jersey earlier this month — and attacked the Justice Department for pursuing it.

Interim New Jersey U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, Trump former criminal lawyer and a staunch ally, announced an investigation into the case last week.

Federal magistrate judge Andre Espinosa gave “Baraka’s attorneys a chance to rebut the charges,” but then “seem[ed] confused by the prosecutor’s conduct throughout the case.”

“The hasty arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, followed swiftly by the dismissal of these trespassing charges a mere 13 days later, suggests a worrying misstep by your office,” Espinosa said. “An arrest, particularly of a public figure, is not a preliminary investigative tool. It is a severe action, carrying significant reputational and personal consequences, and it should only be undertaken after a thorough, dispassionate evaluation of credible evidence.”

He said the assistant U.S. attorney, Stephen Demaovich, acted appropriately; however, the judge only found out that the charges against Baraka were being dismissed due to media reports.

“Your office must operate with a higher standard than that,” the judge demanded.

“Federal prosecutors serve a single paramount client: justice itself,” Espinosa added. “Your role is not to secure convictions at all costs, nor to satisfy public clamor, nor to advance political agendas. Your allegiance is to the impartial application to the law, to the pursuit of truth, and to the upholding of due process for all.”

Baraka was caught on a hot mic after the hearing saying, “Jesus, he tore these people a new asshole. Good grief.”

The Ohio meetup sounds like it was quite the success with the only “bad” being that it was hard to hear at the restaurant.

All the hard materials used in restaurant fixtures and furnishings really do detract from a good experience. Most everyone has to talk louder and thus sound like cackling witches.

Comrade Scott hosted the Denver winter meetup in his house and no one had to struggle to hear or be heard. If it’s not too soon for another Denver affair, I’d be delighted to host a meetup in my backyard, sometime in June between the two holidays if there’s any interest. Bocce ball could be played.

In front there was a normal bar, but out back they had a big space with a roof and tables and a garage-like door, and beyond that an outside patio with tables. We were inside the “garage” so protected if the weather had been bad but it wasn’t.

Being in a quasi-garage, all concrete floor and garage roof the acoustics were bad, but otherwise it was great. I am really skittish in enclosed tight crowded spaces, and this didn’t make me jumpy at all.

there were multiple claims of “that’s classified” but there’s some question as to whether “why is it classified” got that. That’s in some of the sources, others say the question was “who authorized the classification” to which the response was “I don’t know.”

Is it wrong for me to be hopeful the entirety of the HFC hop on planes this evening?

Punchbowl News gives four reasons why Speaker Mike Johnson wants to hold a vote today on the reconciliation bill:

      • Vote counts rarely get better over time.
      • The speaker has said he wants to get this bill passed by Memorial Day and is intent on making that deadline.
      • Members will be very angry if Johnson cancels the Memorial Day recess.
      • Johnson is going to have attendance problems beginning Thursday.

Meanwhile, the House Freedom Caucus is clearly signaling it’s not ready to vote today.

Dems NEED to be ready for Johnson’s dirty trickery of adjourning – then five minutes later calling the House back into session (preplanned) catching the Dems flat-footed and passing the reconciliation bill.

Am I shocked that Tapper would lie to sell a sleazy book justifying his unethical and deplorable treatment of the Biden family? Not even a little. Tapper’s the poster child for sellout media, a once-decent reporter and writer who tossed it aside for the chance to make big corporate cash. @suzanne: well, they had a right to believe that of Fetty, because he said he washe said he was.

”“We have started a progressive movement here in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman tweeted in 2016. It was one of more than a dozen tweets over the years in which Fetterman referred to himself as a “progressive.”

“Progressive values have been the heart of my campaign,” he tweeted in 2018.

“Progressive rhetoric is great but progressive results are 100,” he tweeted that same year.

In a 2020 response to Jeb Bush, Fetterman tweeted in part: “My dude, I’m a progressive democrat.”

      The list goes on.

Fetterman has also called himself a progressive in previous interviews. In 2017, when Fetterman was running for lieutenant governor, he told WHYY that he would be a “solid progressive backstop” for the state.

“If I’m lucky enough to be elected, I’m able to be a solid progressive backstop for Pennsylvania, for Governor Wolf,” he said. “It provides a statewide platform to advocate for the progressive issues I care about ― a living wage, marijuana legalization, immigration, and community policing.””

I knocked on doors for him because of those statements and others.

I looked at the two pictures and figured the black man had been mayor and the arrogant-looking young pup with the punchable face had probably been the one who won.

      That is…. exactly correct.

@brendancalling: Fetterman played out of both sides of his mouth.

In the 2022 campaign, Fetterman’s ties to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., prompted GOP opponent Mehmet Oz to tell voters he’d be a mere “sidekick” for the democratic socialist. But Fetterman’s recent stances point to an unorthodox brand of blue-collar liberalism, with a dash of outsider populism, in a purple state that is expected to be hotly contested again in the 2024 elections.
In an interview, the first-term Pennsylvania Democrat said his critics shouldn’t be surprised.
“I’m not a progressive,” Fetterman told NBC News. “I just think I’m a Democrat that is very committed to choice and other things. But with Israel, I’m going to be on the right side of that. And immigration is something near and dear to me, and I think we do have to effectively address it as well.”

We have a big dog. She hates walks so she poops in the yard.

Lawn guys came today. I gallopped out to clean up the dog poop. Yesterdays painters had painted most of it black (same shade as the shutters). So cleanup was weird, all that painted dog poop.
