Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Petty moves from a petty man.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

This really is a full service blog.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

We have a new Angel match!    Thank you, PatrickG!!
On Wisconsin!

With the double-match for the next $6,000 or so – plus the Angel Match for the next $1,000 – donations up to $100 per person are 6x matching.

With the double-match for the next $6,000 or so, and this Balloon Juice Angel match, all donations up to $100 per person are 6x matching.

$100 (donation) + $100 (angel match) = $200.  That $200 is matched by two different external matches The Civics Center found for us, which means that $100 turns into $600.  $50 turns into $300.  $25 turns into $150.   6x matching up to $100 per person.

Even more critically, once that angel match is met, we will still have about *$11,000  to go in order to meet our goal for The Civics Center.

*We are at close to $15k as I type this.  ($1k Angel match that was sent by check so doesn’t show in the thermometer.)  That leaves about $10k to go!

Every time I type “fundraising” in the media library to bring up the image above, it also brings up a picture of Harry Reid.

Flash Fundraising for Cisco Aguilar

It makes me happy to see his face, and then the tears come.

He was a fighter, literally and figuratively.    And boy do we need that right now!

Harry Reid is an example of how foolish it would be to make decisions primarily based on age.

Harry’s not here to fight for us anymore, so we have to do it ourselves.

Let’s do him proud, in every way we can.

Donated $100 earlier this morning when this post was up briefly.

If there’s a concern about the age of elected Democrats, donating to an organization whose mission is to register young people to vote might be good way to begin to address that. Once those young people become voters, some of them might decide to become even more involved and wind up running for office.

Thanks to WaterGirl for the reminder of that canny old fox, Harry Reid (a complicated and interesting person). I think he’d appreciate our fundraising abilities!

      @MJN:

Yay!  Someone made the connection that I hoped would be obvious. :-)

Repeated complaints and concerns about age of elected officials and the lack of engagement that helped determine the outcome of the election.   check

Donating to not just register the high school pups but also to help them see why it matters and engage them in the process (note the word CIVICS in the name of the organization)… not quite as popular as expressing concern.  :-)

I am infinitely grateful to all who are donating.  I thought this would be a very popular effort, but it’s the slowest fundraiser we have ever done, which I find discouraging in these perilous times.

@Baud: We’ll chip in to engrave that on your headstone when the time comes. :-)

On second thought, maybe since the sentiment is pretty widespread, we can get a special deal for that particular engraving?

The jackals are still good jackals, never fear. Maybe instead we can blame the double whammy of rising costs and dropping stock market: pennies are scarce, and they ain’t makin’ any more of ’em. :)

@H.E.Wolf: I’m sorry if my comment came off as blaming anyone.  Just expressing my discouragement.  My guess is that it’s more related to state of mind than pocketbooks.

As always, no one should ever feel obligated to donate to the Balloon Juice site or the political fundraising.

I also know that $5 from one person can be more of a sacrifice than $500 from another person.  We’ve all been that person without much discretionary income at one time or another.  I know I have!

      @WaterGirl:
Oh, no worries! I didn’t imagine you were blaming folks. I was thinking that I didn’t want anyone to blame themselves if they’ve been slower than usual to participate this time.

If this turns out to be a tortoise-speed fundraiser… well, the tortoise crossed the finish line in the end, and crossed it ahead of the jackrabbit. :) We’ll get there.
