Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Air raid alert map of Ukraine from 4:00 AM local time in Ukraine on 25 MAY 2025. All of Ukraine but the westernmost oblasts (regions) are under air raid alert, which is why the map is colored dark or light red. White drone swarm indicators are shown over a number of oblasts and white airplane indicators are showing over western Russia heading towards Ukraine indicating the threat of missile and bomb attack.

(Air raid alert map of Ukraine at 4:00 AM Ukraine time on 26 MAY 2025)

Here is last night’s Ukrainian air defense tally:

Crazy figures shared by Ukrainian air force: overnight, Russia launched against Ukraine:

🔴 298 kamikaze drones

🔴 69 missiles (Khinzal, Iskander, Kalibr)

Out of which Ukrainian air defence says they have intercepted:

🟢 266 drones
🟢 45 missiles

— Emmanuelle Chaze (@emmanuellechaze.com) May 25, 2025 at 2:59 AM

As you can see in the air raid alert map above, all but the westernmost oblasts are under air raid alert for drone, missile, and bomb strikes as Russia’s Tu-95s are up over western Russia.

It is now 4;55 AM local time in Ukraine and the air raid alerts have been extended to the entire country!

This comes between two and three hours since the President expressed his bewilderment over what his good friend Vlad is doing:

Trump: “I’m not happy with what Putin is doing. He’s killing a lot of people and I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin. I’ve known him a long time … we’re in the middle of talking and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don’t like it at all. I’m surprised.”

Of course because Vlad is such a good friend of his, he can’t criticize him without also swiping at President Zelenskyy:

Happy birthday, my dear Kyiv — the most beautiful and beloved city in the world! Founded in 482, you turn 1,543 today. That’s why muddy moscow wants to capture you so badly — to steal you as the cradle of our history and culture. You’ll prevail. Freedom will prevail.

There is no address today from President Zelenskyy. Nor was any other video featuring him posted today by the Office of the President of Ukraine.

— Iryna Voichuk (@irynavoichuk.bsky.social) May 25, 2025 at 2:58 AM

From The Financial Times:

Russia carried out its largest aerial attack on Ukraine, shattering any hopes that a record prisoner exchange completed on Sunday could lead to a cessation of hostilities.

At least 12 people were killed and dozens more injured in the overnight attack, which the Ukrainian air force said was the single-largest aerial assault of the war so far — with Moscow launching 367 missiles and suicide drones. Sunday’s record assault came after another large attack on Saturday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 30 cities and towns had been targeted in 12 regions. He urged western allies to step up their pressure on Moscow in response to the attack which he described as further evidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not interested in peace.

“Putin must be forced to think not about launching missiles, but about ending the war,” Zelenskyy said. Each Russian air strike was “a sufficient reason for new sanctions against Russia”.

“The world knows all the weaknesses of the Russian economy,” Zelenskyy said, arguing that the war “can be stopped, but only through the necessary force of pressure on Russia”.

Putin has rejected US and European calls for an immediate ceasefire. So far the only agreement Moscow has lived up to is the 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war exchanged over the weekend for 1,000 Russian POWs.

The swap, agreed in Istanbul earlier this month when Ukraine and Russia held their first direct talks in three years, began on Friday and was conducted over the course of three days. Zelenskyy said Ukraine had returned 303 Ukrainian soldiers on Sunday in the final handover.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Kyiv and Moscow have conducted more than 64 prisoner exchanges that have seen thousands of people traded.

While the exchange was welcomed by Kyiv and marked a rare moment of co-operation with Moscow, Ukrainian officials remain sceptical of its broader significance.

Russian officials have in recent days suggested that they could again invade the Sumy and Kharkiv border regions in Ukraine’s north-east, while Putin said his army was working to create a “buffer zone” in that area.

The Russian leader has also maintained his maximalist position in regards to peace talks, which Ukrainian officials say are a sign that he plans to continue fighting the largest war on European soil in nearly a century.

At least four people were killed and a dozen more injured in Kyiv region, authorities said on Sunday. In the central Khmelnytskyi region, another four people were killed and five wounded, while civilian infrastructure was damaged. Five people were hospitalised there with shrapnel wounds, officials said.

In Zhytomyr region west of Kyiv, three siblings aged 8, 12 and 17 were found dead under a pile of rubble after a Russian air strike on their home. Their parents survived. At least 12 other people were injured, according to the state emergency service. One man was killed in the southern Mykolayiv region.

For its part, Russia’s defence ministry said its air defences had shot down 110 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Ukrainian foreign minister Andriy Sybiha said the Russian attack “once again emphasises the imperative of a full, unconditional and durable ceasefire for any meaningful peace effort.” He echoed Zelenskyy, calling on the world to “act”.

Has Trump ever demonstrate the slightest understanding of WHY Russia and Ukraine are fighting? Seems to me his understanding of soldiers/sailors/airmen, etc. is that they’re all just “suckers and losers.”

Not a single Azov fighter. Not a single Azov fighter was among the thousand Ukrainian prisoners of war exchanged over the last three days. At the same time, the bastard who had asked his prison guards for a knife to “cut the ones from Azov” has returned home.

This feels like mockery — a cruel joke at the expense of those who have been held in Russian captivity for more than three years under the harshest conditions and inhumane pressure. A jeer at their families, loved ones, and brothers-in-arms. A show of derision towards those who were given guarantees — those who have an absolute right to be prioritized for exchange, because they went into captivity not at their own will, but by order of the High Command.

Just days ago, Ukraine marked the third anniversary of the day when the Mariupol garrison left Azovstal, hoping that the fighters of the 12th Azov Brigade would be included in the announced 1,000-for-1,000 exchange. Those expectations failed.

I will never believe the nonsense about Russia’s reluctance to release Azov fighters being the sole reason for their repeated absence from exchanges. If that were truly the case, neither I nor other Azov fighters would have returned from captivity. That is not the reason.

If the established mechanism has stopped working, then expecting a different result every time is madness. The strategy must change.

If the Russians refuse to exchange Azov fighters for their regular soldiers, we must find alternatives — offer them someone more valuable than a contracted soldier from Omsk. Ukraine is packed with Russian agents — all our special services know this very well. The only thing they need is an order.

I am confident the Russians would be far more interested in the priests of the Moscow Patriarchate who openly work for Russian special services than in the soldiers Russia floods Ukrainian soil with.

At the same time, Ukraine should work on its engagement in the exchange processes between our Western allies and Russia. We have unique experience, knowledge, and information that is invaluable to the Western world. These too can become part of our exchange leverage.

There are always options — we simply need to adapt and seek out new paths and configurations. Because not a single Azov fighter among the 1,000 exchanged POWs is a disgrace to the entire state.

I do not believe that our government is interested in bringing Azov service members home, while the same people continue to ineffectively manage prisoner exchanges for the fourth year in a row.

Assuming those figures are correct (nearly 300 drones and 70 missiles in one night), that’s almost 500 missiles a week and over 2,000 drones…

How many God damned weapons do they have?  Aren’t they getting depleted even with NK and Iran resupplies?  Add close to a million Russian casualties and whatever number of young men who fled at the invasion’s outset… Russia has to be seriously borrowing against its own dreary future.

    A worrisome development:

Konrad Muzyka – Rochan Consulting @konrad_muzyka

Here’s a brief update on the situation in Ukraine, focusing on Donbas and the air picture.
Over the past week, Russian elements from the 57th and 33rd Motor Rifle Regiments penetrated Ukrainian defensive positions along the TO504 road linking Pokrovsk and Konstantynivka. Although this line has long ceased to serve as a reliable GLOC, the tempo and vectors of Russian advances northward remain concerning. (Orange colour is fortifications – made by @Playfra0 ->give him a follow)

Russian forces are advancing along three primary axes toward Konstantynivka:
    – The eastern axis from Chasiv Yar, which has seen limited gains over months;
    – The southern axis via Toretsk, currently contested with Ukrainian forces holding firm;
    – The eastern flank, which has gained operational momentum and now threatens Ukrainian rear areas, complicating sustainment and force disposition.
The rapid pace of the eastern push risks outflanking Ukrainian defensive lines and denies time for construction of new fortifications. Should Russian forces secure a breakthrough near Rusyn Yar, it would constitute a critical tactical gain, severely degrading Ukrainian defensive depth.
From a terrain perspective, movement from Novooolenivka toward Stepaniva affords the Russians dominant ground, enabling fire control over approaches to Konstantynivka and interdiction of Ukrainian reinforcement routes from Druzkivka.

Paradoxically, these territorial gains coincide with a reported overall reduction in Russian ground offensive operations across the front, including near Pokrovsk and Toretsk. This raises the question: Why is Russian forward momentum accelerating amid diminished ground attack activity?

Ukraine is also facing increased missile and drone strikes, including cruise and ballistic missiles and Shahed-type drones, aimed at overwhelming air defences. The reported shortage of PAC-3 interceptors further exacerbates the challenge. High-precision missile usage has surged to unprecedented levels, while drone deployments in early 2025 reached record highs. Ukraine needs cheaper solutions, especially for the Shahed-type threat. For missiles, there are no easy fixes. Russia is producing a lot more long-range precision missiles than the West is producing interceptors.
Russia’s strategy is one of cumulative attrition: continuous pressure through relentless missile/drone attacks very often aimed at civilian populations, sustained troop replacements enabled by ongoing recruitment, and increased production of precision munitions. After a brief pause earlier in the year, Ukraine again faces difficult weeks ahead.

All of the talks of negotiations is a distraction. The only path to a non-humiliating “peace” for Ukraine is Ukrainian victories on the battlefield. Putin has no incentive to even consider serious negotiations if he believes the Russian Army is still moving forward, & his current gains not under threat.
