Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

When we show up, we win.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

We’ve heard reports of guidance for DHS to “pause” raids on agricultural worksites— and we’re skeptical.

As long as Border Patrol and ICE are sweeping through farm worker communities making chaotic arrests like they did TODAY, they’re still hunting down farm workers.

Reportedly 15,000 protesters—double what organizers had hoped for—lining a 7-mile route from Palo Alto south to Sunnyvale, here in the Bay Area. Including this feisty 98-year-old grannie:

“California never called for his help. And there he was!” said Cohen, a retired elementary school principal who’s two weeks from her 99th birthday.

Asked about her motivations for protesting, she said: “Do you want a list?”

Tens of thousands in SF, and thousands in both Oakland and Santa Cruz, along with numerous other smaller protests around the Bay.

Hundreds formed a human “No King” banner at Ocean Beach in SF (no paywall).

My bride just sent this video of Athens. The speaker is Micheal Thurmond, Athens  native and accomplished Civil Rights Attorney.

Thurmond was raised as a sharecropper’s son in Clarke County, Georgia. He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Paine College and later earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.[1] He also completed the Political Executives program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

@Baud: There are some thunderstorms to the west, but the persistent DC high is fighting them off at the moment.  Maybe they’ll arrive in time to wash-out the fireworks (starting at 9:45 PM EDT).

      Best wishes,
      Scott.

Protestors as far as the eye can see in SoCal. Both sides of the street for blocks and blocks. My favorite moment so far was when a guy driving a flat bed tow truck blew his horn repeatedly and gave us a big thumbs up. A thousand cheers and laughter. On the back of his tow truck was a broken down Cybertruck.

Based on the forecast, that’s looking likely. Thunderstorms forecast from 8 pm to 11 pm. 100% chance at 9 pm and 99% at 10 pm

      Great signs.

I had Franklin’s “A Republic, if you can keep it” on my sign.

I just came across this little story about Franklin on Dick Nixon’s bsky thing:

      Richard M. Nixon
      ‪@dicknixon.bsky.social‬

I’m going to talk about the Hutchinson Affair, because it’s never taught anymore and I think it’s instructive.

Hutchinson was Royal Governor of Massachusetts. He wrote letters to London showing his general low opinion of Americans and his intent to curb their rights.

Benjamin Franklin represented Massachusetts (among other colonies) in London. Twenty of these letters fell into his hands. He decided to leak them in America — but not publish them. His intent was to tip blame to Hutchinson and away from London. Find a better master, in other words.

      ‪Richard M. Nixon‬
      ‪@dicknixon.bsky.social‬
      5h

But his orders won’t followed. Samuel Adams (among others) arranged to have the letters published. They created a political firestorm.

The source of the leak was obvious. Franklin — at this time one of the most famous men in the world — was hauled before the Lords-in-Council to answer for it.

      ‪Richard M. Nixon‬

Franklin was made to stand for several hours while he was berated, humiliated. He barely got a chance to plead his case.

It was then that Franklin began to consider his position. That he may not be able to remain a loyal Englishman.

      ‪@dicknixon.bsky.social‬

This was also around the time that Franklin began to consider that if he did not wish to live under what he considered slavery, he must not own slaves and work against slavery in all forms. By the time of his death he was a prominent abolitionist.

There’s a book “A Little Revenge” by a fellow called Randall that has a very vivid retelling of this incident. Plus quite a bit about Franklin’s handling of his Loyalist son that a man like you would probably have some interesting reflections on.

      I will find this.

History turns on seemingly little things, things that include personalities and personal ideas of honor and fairness.

(I recently was reminded that most of the “founding fathers” were young men. (I haven’t checked these numbers myself, but they satisfy my truthiness sensor:)

Ages of the Founding Fathers on July 4, 1776

      James Monroe, 18
      Aaron Burr, 20
      Alexander Hamilton, 21
      James Madison, 25
      Thomas Jefferson, 33
      John Adams, 40
      Paul Revere, 41
      George Washington, 44

I think and believe that there were attendees today who will take what they saw and heard and experienced today about truth and fairness and respect and self-government and turn it into a lifelong calling.

      Forward!!

      Best wishes,
      Scott.

Good rally in our little town of Erie. First time I’ve ever seen a rally here, actually, and we were having a good time despite the 95F heat. Flag-waving, thumbs-up motorists honking, chants of “No Kings!”, and lots of friendly folks.

I just got home from the San Francisco march. On the way there, all the Muni underground trains were packed with people going to the protest, holding signs or wearing anti-trump shirts; several of us had to take trains inbound several stops to find a train back outbound that we could squeeze onto.  At Dolores Park, where the march began, I started to be disappointed at the crowd size — until I looked up and down Dolores Street.  THAT’s where the crowd was, and it extended at least 4  blocks in both directions along Dolores Street which is four lanes wide.  I could not see where the crowd ended  — I’m short,  and I was in the middle and could not see much beyond my immediate surroundings.  There were so many people that the walk from Dolores Park to the Civic Center Plaza, which is usually about half an hour, took an hour and a half.  I was too far away in the park to hear any speeches, and the Civic Center Plaza was full by the time I got there, so if there were speakers there, I missed them.

The crowd was — estimate only — about 2/3 white people and 1/3 Hispanics, with a few African-Americans .  Wide range of ages — young people, families with children, and olds like me (I’m 69).  There were several elderlies using walkers and canes, and I saw at least 5 people in wheelchairs.

I did not see any violence from anyone.  There were some police around, but they were just watching and also blocking off side streets.

I did see a lot of people with high-quality cameras taking pictures.  Don’t know who they were but whenever I passed a camera, or any police, I waved my little American flag, smiled, and took off my sunglasses.  I’m an American citizen, I have a right to protest, and — apparently unlike some ICE personnel — I’m not afraid for people to see my face when I’m doing it.

The weather was kind to us — clear, sunny but cool, good walking weather.
