Sunday is usually light posting day for balloon-juice and I think they will have a greater impact all today, the day after the protests.  For  those of us who weren’t able to be part of the protests, all of the photos posted yesterday and today makes it feel like we were almost there. I think it’s more than Trump … and more than his perade.

Definitely anecdotal, but the elected MS Republicans I follow on Twitter have been very quiet the past couple of days.  Today there were a few mentions of Father’s Day and a couple of folks posting their usual Bible-thumpin’ verses … but that’s about it.

Perhaps I’m being overly optimistic but it does bring me a bit of comfort to think they’re actually seeing what’s going on (such as the protests yesterday, even here in blood-red MS) and giving some thought about their complete capitulation to MAGA.

      Time will tell.

Since this is an open thread, something I forgot to mention in my Bluesky posts about yesterdays No Kings protest in Gulfport is on our (good guys) side of the street, we had at least one God-botherer with a megaphone blathering about how abortion “kills babies” and how we needed to repent.

As far as I know, he got no engagement from anyone (at least when passing near me several times) but I have to wonder if anyone challenged him on the “killing babies” nonsense in light of the assassination of MN state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband and the attempted assassination of MS state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife.

But whatever makes sense to you is fine!

Meanwhile, … Johnathan Turley at TheHill:

Across the nation today, thousands of protests are being organized by left-wing groups, unions, and other organizations, with chants of “No Kings, No Kings, No Kings.” The mantra is a calculated campaign to cement the notion that Donald Trump has assumed dictatorial powers.

It is a curious campaign, since every indication is that our constitutional system is operating precisely as designed.

      […]

      What a predictable, laughable, tool.

“The Constitution says nothing about x, y, z, so the president obviously can do what he wants…” – DougJ channeling Turley.

Speaking of voting, … WaPo at Archive.IS:

By Gregory S. Schneider and Laura Vozzella

RICHMOND — Early voting was strong across Virginia this year in the 45 days leading up to Tuesday’s primary elections, in which voters will choose Democratic nominees for lieutenant governor and attorney general and, in a handful of districts, candidates from both parties for the House of Delegates and local offices.

Nearly 158,000 people had cast votes in Democratic primaries as of Thursday — up from 124,000 at the same point in Democratic primaries four years ago, when the party had a hotly contested, five-way primary for governor, according to analysis of the latest available data by the Virginia Public Access Project. Virginia’s early voting period, which is among the longest in the nation, ended Saturday.

The totals also show a marked surge from a year ago, when about 120,000 voters cast ballots in a Democratic presidential primary that was never in doubt […]

The turnout reflects “evidence Virginians are fired up like never before and ready to elect leaders who will stand up to [President Donald] Trump’s dangerous agenda,” said state Sen. Lamont Bagby (Henrico), chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia.

      […]

      Good, good.

      Forward!!

      I guess TACO speaks:

President Donald Trumpsaid in a phone interview Sunday that he “may” call Gov. Tim Walz about the targeted attacks in Minnesota against elected officials on Saturday.

“Well, it’s a terrible thing. I think he’s a terrible governor. I think he’s a grossly incompetent person. But I may, I may call him, I may call other people too,” the president told ABC’s Rachel Scott.

Walz spoke with Vice President JD Vance Saturday, CNN reported.

Walz expressed to Vance an “appreciation for the ongoing coordination between federal law enforcement and Minnesota public safety officials,” a source close to the governor told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

      What a forking asshole.

I have not read the article because I’m just reading headlines right now. But this is not inconsistent with a summary from yesterday’s statement by.Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who knows a thing or two about the region:

      — Advancing nuclear negotiations initiated by U.S. President Trump is the only viable path to resolve conflict over Iran’s nuclear programme.

@Geminid: It was on his Truth Social this morning.  Who knows if Trump or one of his minions posted it:

Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make, in that case by using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity into the talks with two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP! Also, during my first term, Serbia and Kosovo were going at it hot and heavy, as they have for many decades, and this long time conflict was ready to break out into WAR. I stopped it (Biden has hurt the longer term prospects with some very stupid decisions, but I will fix it, again!). Another case is Egypt and Ethiopia, and their fight over a massive dam that is having an effect on the magnificent Nile River. There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention, and it will stay that way! Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place. I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!

@Gretchen: i’m guessing that the streets of New York City had a lot of people in them yesterday.  Hard to miss.

@Scout211: I think that right now Trump’s Middle East policy is being run by Steve Witkoff, Marco Rubio and Susan Wiles.

U.S. Ambassador to Turkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack might have a say. Barrack knows the region better than anyone else in the Trump administration and is a long-time Trump ally..

Turkish President R.T. Erdogan may also have some influence. Erdogan is one of the few world leaders Trump actually respects, and the two men spoke on the phone yesterday.

I vote for post all today. If more stuff comes in later, post them later.

Upthread someone talked about Trump seeming grumpy. Of course he’s grumpy, he has to spend the weekend in Washington. No golf! But it’s not just golf, it’s being at his clubs. Mar a Lago, Bedminster, they’re his happy places. Everyone treats him like a superstar, he doesn’t have to listen to confusing, boring stuff, he gets a standing ovation just for showing up for dinner.

Eight posts? I’m about to send you #9. Spacing them out might be a good idea to cover some dead air in the next day or two. Any longer than that and we may have moved on to the next disaster-du-jour and this will seem like quaint old news.

@Scout211: Agreed, post all of them today. It’s like reading the sports news the day after your favorite team wins handily—a chance to relive the thrill of victory.

@Scout211: Meh. You called it right. Trump is too chickenshit to talk to Walz. I mean, he’s also an asshole, but, because he’s an asshole, Trump knows he ain’t got the balls to talk to Walz like a any real man would.

A real man would put all that hate and electioneering aside, but Trump has to watch parades of people who were probably more a man at the age of of 14 than Trump’s ever been in his whole life.

I would vote to space them out, maybe a daily post for a while. Maybe a morning and afternoon “more pics!” open thread to make it easy for the frontpagers. (Or, if y’all are talky, only morning, only afternoon, or maybe only at dusk, precisely.)

Okay, trying to split the baby here. :-)

Those of you who want them all yesterday and today (except for later arrivals on Monday) you will get them this weekend.

For those who want to pace themselves and maybe look at one or two a day:

There is a new link under Featuring in the sidebar.

You can go to that link and see as few or as many of these posts as you would like, whenever you would like.

      Does that work?

@WaterGirl: Nice split! I think that works well. I liked the comment upstairs that we should see them today, it’s like enjoying the highlights from your team’s win yesterday.
