On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Since we were explicitly not doing #NoKings in DC, we had a huge number of little rallies all over the area (plus somewhat bigger ones in Alexandria, for example.) I picked one on a pedestrian overpass to sign up for, and it went great! We had so many more people come than had signed up that at the beginning they were having to limit the number of people on the bridge to prevent overcrowding. Less opportunity for photos when everyone has their backs to you most of the time, but I got a few. We got lots of support for drivers on the Beltway, especially from truckers, who I suspect are suffering from the tariff chaos sooner and more directly than the rest of us.

Long view from the roadside

USAID worker with a snarky hair clip

Still a lot of older white people, but I felt like we had more who weren’t at this rally

I told this woman I thought she cut quite a figure.

This was a favorite, which I don’t think I’d seen before. He was one of many veterans at our protest.
Kristine
“Jail to the Chief.”
First time I’ve seen that. 👍🏼

@Kristine:
Jumped right off the screen at me, that one.
zhena gogolia
Great pictures!

I like the GO ARMY sign. Trump co-opted their celebratory weekend.
And he belongs in jail even more now than when he was inaugurated, 34 felonies under his belt.

I stopped by the protest on the overpass on I-395 to say thanks. They are there quite frequently, not just this weekend.
Suzanne
That lady with the maxi skirt and sensible sandals….. hi, friend. I see you.
That TACO hair clip is hilarious. I deeply appreciate everyone’s creativity. It’s been the best part of these pictures.
Thank you to WaterGirl for continuing to share these!

thanks for sharing and for all your work with everyone’s pictures. sorry it took me so long to figure out the Submit Your Photos procedure; I reckon that is easier for you than submitting via emails
WaterGirl
@Kristine: Love that!
WaterGirl
@Jay: That is so awesome. Did the geese think they were clapping for them?
WaterGirl
@williamrd: You are correct, that is easier if you have between 5-10 pics.
If it’s fewer pics than that, I have to combine them which provides opportunities for error.
Same with pics as email attachments.
But I was willing to take them all ways because I think it’s important to share these!
H.E.Wolf
Thank you to all of the protesters, and to WaterGirl for posting all the photos that have been coming in!
Old School
@WaterGirl:
An error? Pshaw, like that would ever happen.
JoeyJoeJoe
@planetjanet: I also make sure to honk for the people at the overpass between exit 5 and 4 going south on 395. The people were there about once a week, then more frequently. Now it seems almost daily, barring really bad weather, I would guess

All these submissions are fantastic! Thanks to all who sent in photos and all who attended protests.

Echoing the thanks above!

thanks WG and thank you everyone who is sending in photos!
I have been posting on FB about the various news stories (what few can be found) in the mainstream media, aiming to put up one per day so that the MAGAts in my life have their FauxNews Bubble pierced repeatedly.

PS: I know there are many, but I’m pretty sure I’ve walked across that bridge dozens of times (my RWNJ bro used to live in Shirlington ;)

Historian Kevin Kruse has been pointing out that No Kings had 15-20 times the participants of the Tea Party’s biggest day of protests.

A judge just deemed the NIH grant terminations illegal (my university has had 9 terminated thus far). It will probably be appealed by this administration but the outcome is still good to see.

This is great, Redshift!
Thanks very much.
Best wishes,

@Old School: YAY! I hope he buries his ugly mug deep in his pillow so we don’t have to endure listening to his sobs.

@Another Scott:
In Canada, if the geese are coming through, the crowd would scatter.
That’s because in Canada, on a night with a strawberry Moon, we go out into the dark and perform sacred rituals, where we transfer all our anger, hostility, frustration into the bodies of the geese.
That way, we can remain for the most part, nice, polite Canadians and say “sorry”.

A message from Rex Huppke today to all of you No Kings protesters:
A few excerpts:
Referring to Trump’s screed on his Truth Social with his plan to punish blue state cities with stepped up ICE raids:
I certainly am, too. Thanks to all of you who participated and marched!
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia:
I still have 2 more for tonight and 7 more scheduled for tomorrow.
Remind me, did you send by email or submit as an OTR form?
lowtechcyclist
Love the “resisting tyrants since Pharoah” t-shirt – Googled it and already ordered mine!
WaterGirl
@lowtechcyclist: It’s a sharp design. Do you have a link?

@WaterGirl: I did an OTR form, but I really don’t mind if you just skip it.

@WaterGirl: I sent you a couple pictures via email.

@WaterGirl: Doing a ton of work for all of us. Thanks WG!!
lowtechcyclist
@WaterGirl:
Yes, I do! It’s https://truah.myshopify.com/
I had to order mine in size XL since they were out of smaller sizes – I usually take a men’s large so it’s just one size up, no big deal.
T’ruah describes itself as “the rabbinic call for human rights” and they don’t have a big selection of merch, their focus seems to be more on activism – nothing wrong with that!
Jay
Thank you Watergirl,
Thank all of you who showed up,
Thank you, to all who couldn’t show up but wanted to.

Breaking that Trump is leaving G7 early. Excuse is that he has to keep an eye on the Middle East. Huh. The guy played NO golf last weekend; how soon before he peace-outs to Bedminster?
Ohio Mom
@JoyceH: I think I can hear the sighs of relief from the rest of the G7 attendees all the way here in Ohio. Now they can all talk about Trump freely.
Jay
@JoyceH:
27 USAF tanker aircraft flew to Europe last night. The Pentagon is all hands on deck, (the Pizza index is nuts for the 3rd day*) and TACO47’s entire Cabinet has been called in for a meeting tonight.
* OSINT researchers keep an eye on the “busy hours and volume” at the closest Pizza Hut, which the Pizza Hut helpfully posts online. When the Pizza Hut get’s busy, some shit is going down.
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: Yours were also in the compilation #3, because yours was the one I started with to make that one. but i can skip yours if you like.
@Dan B: Yours are in “compilation #3” that is scheduled for tonight, where I combined the one-sies and two-sies into a post.
zhena gogolia
@WaterGirl: Maybe skip it, if it’s not too difficult at this point. Thanks!
WaterGirl
@lowtechcyclist: I really like it in the onesie! :-)
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: Will do.
Hoping I didn’t offend you somehow?
WaterGirl
There will be one more this evening, then there are 6 more scheduled for tomorrow.

@Jay: Yeah, the absolute jackass blurted to at least 8 million Iranians that they should “evacuate Tehran now” as if anything of the sort was even remotely possible.
“Donald the Dove” has some dirty work to do for Bibi
@Ohio Mom: More likely they’ll be having some secure comms time back to their top security advisors, seeing what they can snoop about what all our hardware heading to the M.E. is about.

@WaterGirl: No, not at all.
Thanks for all these posts — they are inspiring.

@Jay: Elbows up?
Jackie
@Ohio Mom:
It was planned. He ditched the G7 summit last time around early, too. His welcome was less than cordial, and the other six leaders probably sang ding dong the witch is gone!
Jay
@RaflW:
The Iranians are frantically logging on to Signal
And early today, the Iranian Government said that all non-essential workers and their families should evacuate Tehran.
JoyceH
@Jackie: apparently they’re going to announce some new aid to Ukraine so he has to bail early so Putin won’t blame him.
RaflW
@RaflW: OK, at least this Carnegie Endowment for International Peace person offers a less-horrible option.
Jeffro
@Jay: I hope this – and everything else – leads foreign tourists to abandon the US in droves
in the reverse, since Customs seems to have gone far-right, I am going to be skipping my plans to visit Banff next summer. It’s not worth it, to be detained by some scummy MAGA teen at the border and not allowed back into my own county because my social media is (wildly) anti-trumpov
Redshift
Glad you all enjoyed these!
Jay
@Jeffro:
Canadian cross border crossings are down another 40% since April, another 20% by air.
Unless you live in a border town or a tourist town, you won’t really notice it.
Thing is, if you live in a Canadian town close to the border, it was common to cross for cheap beer, milk, cheese, gas, smokes, Target, often on a Saturday, just keep the $ amount under the exemption.
My ex-Brother made the trip every Saturday, he had a mailbox in Blaine. He would order cheap electrics and other stuff, get it shipped to Blaine, keep it under the exemption, or pay the duty, and it was still cheaper than buying it in Canada.
The ex and I used to cross the border at least 5 times a year. Go down to Point Roberts for their home made fireworks for the 4th, do the I5 run down the corridor to Seattle to hit the outlet malls. In Seattle I would hit the Orvis shop, REI and the bike shops for stuff you couldn’t get in Canada at the time, or was much more expensive.
Snowbirds are selling their homes, California is begging to have us come back, people have cancelled pre-paid Disney Vacations.
It’s not worth being treated like shit.
UncleEbeneezer
@Jay: “The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog reported that Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium—just below weapons-grade—has grown large enough to produce multiple bombs if further enriched. Analysts say Iran could theoretically produce a bomb’s worth of material in as little as a week, and that no other country has that level of uranium without a nuclear weapons program.”
That’s a pretty big and fundamental difference between this and Iraq.
Iran funds and supports Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. All of which have been waging war with Israel since even before 10/7. Iran has rejected every proposed deal that would require them to abandon their illegal pursuit of nuclear weapons. I’m sorry if you’re naive enough to think Iran is acting in good faith and doesn’t mean what they say about their genocidal wish to kill 10 million Israelis. But most people are not so naive. Fuck Netanyahu every day and twice on Sunday, but striking the enemy’s nuclear capacity during a war with several of its’ proxies, is not an unreasonable move. A nuclear Iran is not good for Israel or the world. I thought we were against nuclear weapons…especially in the hands of countries with a long history of terrorist violence. Iranian leaders have denied the holocaust, refused to recognize Israel as a nation and vowed to destroy it, repeatedly. Their actions at every turn, suggest that they mean what they say and are trying to do just that. This is not the lead up to the Iraq fiasco. When even the UN (who has no love for Israel) says Iran is in violation of international law and dangerously close to having nukes, I don’t know how any Israeli PM can take that threat lightly.
Jay
@Jeffro:
BTW, if you are flying, pre-Clearance cuts the lines both ways and cuts the hassle. Instead of encountering a MAGgot CBP asshole, some overworked CBP Nerd drone will do a quick search for a criminal record or warrants and pre-clear you. Then you walk a short line to a single agent at a desk who will just look to see if you have been cleared or not. It’s a major flaw in their “hassle” system.
So come up to Banff, (yes, it is pronounced Ban,….F…F) as long as you are flying. It’s a good trip, don’t pet the bears or try to ride the elk.
Jay
@UncleEbeneezer:
Can’t engage you because you make it clear what your primacy is.

Nobody has f’d up the Middle East more than France, Britain and the US.

@lowtechcyclist: I think I know that guy! A FCDC member who is also a member of my synagogue.
I participated in Occupy Intersections which had people at major Fairfax County intersections. We had about 50 at ours and got tons of positive feedback over our 4 hours.
