On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
This is compilation #3 of pics where a pic or two were sent in.
Short video from BarcaChicago. (She has a photo later on in the post.)

No Kings! march in Ballwin, Missouri, along Manchester Road
Lots of great signs, including this guy!

Crowd at NO KINGS rally
Three photos from the rally at the Duck Pond in Temecula California
(only one pic came through)

Hi there! I got to volunteer with Indivisible Chicago and hold up the S sign of our STOP ICE! Team.
Goddamn exhausting to hold that placard up, but thrilled to be small part of everything! Above is a pic of the team.
Thanks!

peregrino53 – NO MORE KINGS!
An over the road truck driver, I was driving yesterday and couldn’t attend a protest, but, using Photoshop on Allan Ramsey’s Coronation Portrait of King George III, I made a poster.

Dan B Seattle and Durham
My partner Mike went to the march. I stayed home to cook for a party. He said that people were pouring out of the Light Rail Station at the other end of the park as the march had already reached downtown.

Commenter Nancy sent in this awesome sign!

I hope it’s not too early in the day for this!
comrade scotts agenda of rage
“Not a paid insurrectionist, I hate Trump for Free” is a good one.
I realize that a lot of posters have an “inside baseball” element to them but that’s what makes them funny to the target audience, non-normies.
WaterGirl
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: Yeah, I love “I hate Trump for free” too.
So many clever signs.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
I assume you got the email with my Denver photos.
Some might be too offensive but those got the biggest, good, reactions.
Redshift
We got a lot of support from truckers at our overpass rally, which was greatly appreciated!
Baud
@Redshift:
That is nice. Support from unexpected places is always good to see.
narya
Thank you to all the jackals sending in these photos and especially to WG for compiling and posting!!
WaterGirl
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: Yeah, I think there are 6 scheduled for today, and yours is one of them.
AM in NC
LOVED those handmaids and their “Oftaco” posters at the march in Durham, NC! Those women must have been hot under their robes, because it was a hot and humid day at the rally.
NeenerNeener
I just logged out of my “Next Door” account, because the posts about the local No Kings rally were being taken over by MAGAts who insist that TACO is the greatest thing since sliced bread and he doesn’t think he’s a king. Even though he’s the one who proclaimed himself king back in February. I will never understand the cultists. Trump is the antichrist and these folks will happily die horrible deaths for his sins.
Belafon
@AM in NC: There was a group of women dressed similarly in Ft. Worth on Saturday.
sixthdoctor
Just found this one that captures my mood.

PGH had a lot of versions of the UNPAID PROTESTOR, I HATE TRUMP FOR FREE sign. Seems like that one is really resonating with people. LOL.

@NeenerNeener:
Ah, good ole NextDoor, where entitled white people who’ve moved to the big city wail about “suspicious looking” people whenever one of the few POC they haven’t displaced has the temerity to walk down the street.
Salty Sam
when my MAGA Mom asked “Why on earth do you want to get mixed up in that!!?” when I told her I was going to the protest, I told her it was just for the money, that there was a secret code word that you use to meet up with a guy with bags of cash.
She actually believed me.
Belafon
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: Or the whites who fled the big city to the suburbs complain about the minorities that were already there when it was cheaper to buy a house outside the city.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
@NeenerNeener: Who cares what whinny brats say? They were hiding in their pillow forts when the time came.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
@Belafon:
Hah! Good one.
NextDoor’s reputation has gotten to the point here that most of the registered neighborhood orgs (I’m on the board of 2) have stopped using it as a communication vehicle and if there’s one thing we struggle with is effective communication platforms.

Glad that everyone was so involved w No Kings, but I think we need an open thread up alongside, so ppl can discuss and share other news.
And maybe space the No Kings displays out more? Three a day might be good, and they are positive energy against anything the Felon’s administration is doing that day. We may be happy to see them all week.
WaterGirl
@sixthdoctor: that is so awesome.
WaterGirl
@Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony:
what podcasts?
Ruckus
@NeenerNeener:
They never have had anyone else that they think is great because shitforbrains is in first place running for the worst president ever. Has anyone else ever been able to out play him for worst? I don’t think that in all the yrs there has been any one of his level – underneath the bottom of the barrel. Way under.
Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony
Off topicish. I’ve been doing a lot of mobile gaming, lately. I think those ads are fairly cheap. I’d love to see some podcast or just Democratic values ads. I’d be willing to chip in for it. Lots of the ads are for get cash quickly schemes. I think it’s one way to reach the low info people. I also think if ads came from people like us, instead of the DNC, it would resonate more.
WaterGirl
@Elizabelle: maybe we’re all just all having a busy day today. Not sure about anyone else, but I’m working on a deadline for one of my clients.
dww44
@NeenerNeener: I have a hard time not being angry at the family and friends who voted for this. And they consciously did. We are supposed to embrace them as allies in the fights ahead.
It is awfully hard because of incidents like this one when at our local protest of over 500 people, the dominant local tv station chose to interview one of the handful of counter protesters and he got the last word. “I support freedom of speech but these people are so hypocritical after what the last administration did.”
He actually believes that the Biden Administration was corrupt as Trump’s. Once again the propaganda news outlets carry the day. How do we overcome this?
BlueGuitarist
Is anyone else experiencing this:
Getting texts from old friends with photos of them at a No Kings demonstration holding a hand made sign?
Matt McIrvin
@NeenerNeener: This is one of the reasons I stopped reading Facebook– on the one hand, it’s the one social media outlet that a lot of local government and NGO bodies will post to, but on the other hand, the comments are the epitome of “flood the zone with shit”–local MAGAs bellowing about “the invaders” on every single post to just wear you down and create the impression that Massachusetts is deep red Trumpy territory. It’s enervating just to use.
WaterGirl
@Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony: interesting idea!
NeenerNeener
@BlueGuitarist: I wish I was getting pictures of people I know at a No Kings protest! I’d know for sure who wasn’t a MAGAt.
Matt McIrvin
@NeenerNeener: I am worried that these people might not realize the bet they’re making by sharing these pictures with other people.
Ohio Mom
@AM in NC: We had a pair of handmaidens in Cincinnati as well, and I also thought they must be hot and uncomfortable.
And since they had their heads down, they couldn’t appreciate the people’s appreciative faces.
I thought of them as human sculptures.
Elizabelle
@Matt McIrvin: Bingo.
Elizabelle
@WaterGirl: Good luck with it.
Ceci n est pas mon nym

@Matt McIrvin: I think it’s good that people aren’t cowering in fear.
Baud
@zhena gogolia:
I for one am cowering in anger!
Soprano2
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: My Nextdoor is mostly filled with people either looking for their lost pet, looking for the owner of a pet that they’ve found, or looking for some kind of financial help. Of course, I live in a part of town where black people actually live, so we don’t get that many of those kind of comments. However, on FB when people ask where they should look for a house or apartment in Springfield, look out! Those type of comments appear pretty much every other comment. They think Springfield is a crime-ridden hellhole, even the “good” parts of town, because you might encounter a black person. It’s not a great look.

@Soprano2:
The core/burb divide in Facebook is pretty universal, yeah. We see it all the time here in terms of how the core is a crime ridden hell hole, etc.
Actually, the core’s got massive problems exacerbated by our electeds that do nothing to fix fundamental problems (instead most of what they do results in making things worse) which would help those of us who live here to push back on that overblown narrative.
My networking nationally with people indicates this ain’t just a Denver thang either…although our electeds still run this place like it was a cowtown.
WaterGirl
@BlueGuitarist: Not me.
But then I am the most political of any of my friends.
WaterGirl
@sixthdoctor: Love that so much!

@AM in NC: A re-do of your post, this time with the right pics (!) will be going up today or tomorrow.
Professor Bigfoot
@WaterGirl: I hadda save that one. I just caught sight of the sparkling wine in the very back of the fridge that’s been waiting for too many years, now…

@dww44:
Nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Matt McIrvin
@Soprano2: Basically every public post on Facebook gets overwhelmed with reactionary political or conspiracy theory comments unless it’s in a group with active moderators who weed the stuff out constantly. And, of course, government entities and politicians are legally enjoined from doing that.
You see this on YouTube too, but there, it seems like there’s an early burst of Trumpy stuff then the regular people push back. On Facebook it’s more like there are dedicated people or bots just flooding the zone 24/7 so they can overwhelm anyone else.
Steve in the ATL
@Soprano2: does your bar, or did a few years ago, have local artwork on the walls that is for sale?

@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
And before that, three decades of believing that I’d never see another President as bad as Nixon.
I recently came across a Doonesbury from the 1973-74 period (ETA: This one – 6/13/73). Doonesbury is watching TV where David Halberstam is being interviewed about “The Best and the Brightest.” At the end, the fictitious Halberstam mentions he’s working on a sequel, “The Worst and the Stupidest.” We all thought we’d hit bottom then, but we were nowhere close.
Melancholy Jaques
@dww44:
It isn’t just the propaganda news outlets, it’s social media and no one knows how we overcome it.
The things people believe about Democrats generally and Biden & Harris specifically are bizarre and out of touch with reality. People cling to those beliefs and get very angry when anyone (or maybe it’s me?) tries to explain the facts to them.
Matt McIrvin
@BlueGuitarist: The MA number maybe needs an asterisk because Boston No Kings was lumped together with Boston Pride, a huge event every year. In most places these were separate events.
BlueGuitarist
@frosty:
excellent!
they had a much smaller estimate for a protest than someone here had, and it got corrected.
Professor Bigfoot
Too many Jews, Blacks, and women in too many positions of power; also a fact that even they realize is impolitic AF— therefore they concoct these insane conspiracy theories.
If they didn’t, they’d have to come face to face with the fact that they are, indeed, racist.
BlueGuitarist
@Matt McIrvin:
Someone has a comment on the spreadsheet objecting to the size reported for Boston, so it may get adjusted.
Belafon
@WaterGirl: We had a big guy show up at the end of the march in Dallas on his Harley. He pulled up, parked, and he and his wife got off. He had a “Free Dad Hugs” t-shirt on.
You can’t tell by looking at a guy which side he’s on.
Matt McIrvin
@BlueGuitarist: The problem is, there’s no number they could put up that would really be correct. Best regard it as a special case.
I think it did pull people away from other protest events in the area, or else we’d have done bigger numbers than in April rather than about the same.
dww44
@Melancholy Jaques: I agree with your conclusions. It is hard in places like this to push back when one is in the clear minority.
@BlueGuitarist: I was curious about the N C number so I looked at it. They are using 796 Thousand as the entire population of NC which has a population between 10 and 11 million. So that number is way off for them. Makes me suspect the overall

@Ceci n est pas mon nym: Every GOP President of my lifetime has been exponentially worse than the one that came before, except possibly for the two VPs, Ford and Bush I, who ascended to the Presidency and merely perpetuated the sins of their predecessor. Exponentially worse, every one of them. If this nation survives Trump and the voters don’t get their shit together, I think the next GOP President will be someone on the level of Ted Nugent.

Thank you for saying my sign is awesome. I spent the week before Saturday working on drafts and still wound up staying awake til 3 AM putting finishing touches on the final product. The plastic covering is for predicted rain and also because the paint was still wet.
