Padilla said Trump is on a "tour of retribution" in his first floor speech since he was handcuffed at Noem's press briefing last week.

Padilla gave this speech on the floor pretty much as the news of Brad Lander's arrest in New York was breaking. Two Democratic lawmakers tackled and handcuffed by federal law enforcement in the span of a week.

The same people demanding you present a photo ID to vote are perfectly fine with letting you be arrested, handcuffed & thrown into a van by armed men wearing plain clothes, face masks & presenting no identification of any sort.

— Charles Gaba ?? (@charlesgaba.com) June 18, 2025 at 1:48 AM

===

Not an original point but worth saying again – there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

I would add, that the fact the GOP is acting the way they are is being treated by the DC political press corps as though this is actually strategically good for them, when, in fact, it probably isn't.

— Dennis Yedwab (@dennisyedwab.bsky.social) June 17, 2025 at 10:13 PM

So @whitneycwimbish.bsky.social did a writeup of Brad Lander's arrest today at 26 Federal Plaza in NYC, focusing not just on Lander's treatment, but the treatment of immigrants inside, both in the courtroom and once they are detained.

WATCH: NYC comptroller Brad Lander says he sat in a detention room for 3.5 hours without hearing a word about why he was arrested.

I guess Lander and Mamdani are the two progressive candidates in the race. How do they compare to each other? It’s nice that people don’t have to choose between them but can rank them.

I’ve known Senator Padilla for 23 years, since he was an LA City Councilman. One of the most mild mannered people I’ve ever met. You really have to go out of your way to piss him off. I watched him get thrown to the ground and I was spitting nails.

Let’s see…they think it’s OK to not insist on police identification with faces, warrents and official badges and vehicals but Women are stalked and murdered by ex’s by the thousands every year and men too, plus sometimes relatives.

I get alerts on my phone all the time about missing children believed to have been taken by non custodial parents, or just kidnapped at the mall.

      No way.

If they have hired criminals which is what I suspect, I want it known. I also think there has probably already been some criminal maskarades that people thought were ICE but weren’t. Some of those disappeared people are going to turn out to be murdered.

There have been several Dem politicians willing to put themselves on the line and good on them!  But it’s not enough IMO.  ALL Dem politicians (ok, except for the Fettermans of the world) need to support them LOUDLY.  The non-uniformed goon squads need to be called out for what they are — basically Nazi Brownshirts for the Orange administration — repeatedly and publicly, by the entire party apparatus.

If they don’t, they leave the impression that they don’t care that much, and they leave the field open to the Republican propagandists screeching about the Law and the Illegals, as though the goon squads were the equivalent of properly uniformed police or the people they’re harassing were at a minimum receiving due process and in some cases entirely innocent.

The Kilmar Abrego Garcia case was an object lesson.  Make it a Big Story and the TACO guy and his minions will (mostly) back down.  Otherwise, they’ll keep pushing and Dems will look hapless.

I read this yesterday.  Scroll down to see a map of the US and which law enforcement agencies are cooperating with ICE.

California is one of six states with laws preventing local and state agencies from partnering with ICE to enforce federal immigration laws. Under the California Values Act – the state’s sanctuary law – state and local police are prohibited from investigating, detaining, or deporting its residents for purposes of immigration enforcement, according to CalMatters. The law does not prevent the federal government from deporting undocumented residents living in California, but rather limits local and state police cooperation with federal immigration officers.

More than 600 state and local agencies throughout the country have signed agreements to work with ICE through the 287(g) Program.

Depending on the type of agreement, local law enforcement can question inmates about their immigration status, serve warrants or work on task forces.
As of early June, there are 629 agreements between local law enforcement and ICE. Agencies in Florida represent 43% of total agreements, followed by Texas with 14%.

I do wonder if they knew what they were getting into when they signed their agreements.  Especially those in the state of New York.

I posted a link to that FTFNYT photo (in the blue sky post above) yesterday and I thought they all looked like gym rats who spent too much time in the gym pumping iron while pumped up on protein (and other) supplements.  All brawn, no brain?

Mamdani, on The Bulwark podcast, says ‘Globalize the Intifada’ chant signifies, to him, a call for Palestinian human rights. Adds: “The word has been used by the Holocaust Museum when translating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising into Arabic — because it’s a word that means struggle.”

      US Holocaust Museum’s reply

Exploiting the Museum and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to sanitize “globalize the intifada” is outrageous and especially offensive to survivors. Since 1987 Jews have been attacked and murdered under its banner. All leaders must condemn its use and the abuse of history.

@Baud: Assemblyman Mamdani seems to be the most “Left” of the field. Brad Lander does not seem much different from former Comptroller Scott Stringer and City Council Chair Adrienne Adams.

Marist just published their final poll of the Mayoral race. It showed Cuomo starting out with 43% of first round votes; Mamdani was second with (I think) 20%. The final tally was projected as Cuomo 56%, Mamdani 44%, at least as I recall.

Ed. A contraindication that suggests Mamdani strength: a large number of younger voters are said to be voting early. Crosstabs from an earlier Enerson poll showed Mamdani running better than Cuomo among voters under 50.

I too feel that some of these thugs are not Federal employees at all, but MAGA militia members. So no badge number, no ID, and no authority to arrest. Just gangsters connected to the local GOP apparatus.

Not that different than the folks who tried to hijack the 2020 election. They weren’t all State or Federal officials; some were just local GOP operatives who were quite happy to break the law. Going back further, think of the “Brooks Brothers Riot” that stopped the vote count in Florida in 2000. They were operatives of the GOP, and were rewarded with posts in the GWB administration.

What happens when a group of masked Ice guys with no badges or insignia jump some guy in Florida and he pulls a gun out and shoots them all dead?  It is gonna happen.  If not Florida, one of the gun humper states.

@Raoul Paste: Trump is taking advantage of a weakness in the judicial branch. Cops are supposed to be sworn officers of the court – the very idea of lying under oath should make them feel sick to their stomachs. But we know a lot of cops will arrest annoying people for “impeding law enforcement,” “resisting arrest,” and “assaulting an officer, meaning, we know some cops lie, and they get the backing of the department, saying “it was a good bust!”

Trump thinks “OMG, they’ll TRUST you guys? Then you have to tell the right lies!” People who understand democracy say “OMG, they’ll trust YOU GUYS? I better find some of you who don’t like lying.”

@JoyceH: No, it’s so no one can complain about the cops. No one gives a damn if they’re pardoned J6ers. Yes, it would be an aberration of justice, but Trump lives for that kind of crap. In fact, I’m sure that the color he uses on his face is “Aberration of Justice Orange.”

@kindness: this scenario should be raised by Dems every single time they talk about ICE

”what do we do THEN, Secretary Noem?  President Trump?  Who’s the bad guy when a Floridian ‘stands his ground’ and wipes out five non-uniformed, non-badged, mask-wearing ICE officers who jumped out of a van and tried to grab him?”

”can’t we avoid that horrible tragedy RIGHT NOW and agree that all ICE officers need to be wearing official uniforms, badges, and so on?”

      Useful idiots.

The one never-changing noise in the background of my life are the thousands of angry voices shouting “Not a Dime’s Worth of Difference Between Them” helping to throw elections to the Republican Party.

Every time they do this, the Republicans immediately set to work enacting legislation that underscores the major differences between the parties: tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulation, and throwing some shitty little country against a wall for the hell of it.

The question at this point is who are the fools? The people doing this or the folks who still think these people are on their side?

@WaterGirl: Given how close the election was, I think the overall effects of the Gaza war might have cost Harris the election. But these folks were a fairly small movement, and I doubt if they moved the needle much themselves. They’re taking credit for votes of people who might never even have heard of them.

Sadly, the war in Gaza is still ongoing and this group seems to have moved on to a different war already.

      Some text from it:

We organized across every swing state. We moved voters. And we cost Kamala Harris the White House.
Let that serve as a reminder: our demands are not symbolic. Our movement is not hypothetical. When our red lines are crossed, we act.

LOL. Twits are (twit is?) asserting that they are guilty of mass homicide. Maybe nine figures, in the fullness of time, and 6 figures already.

One major reason Bluesky didn’t become a Nazi bar is that from the early days there was a gentlepersons’ agreement to not engage with right-wing trolls, but instead to block and move on.* The trolls got bored when there was no one to fight with and went back to Twitter.

*Albeit I usually mute instead of block, unless someone is abusive or poses a potential danger (just in case I need to see what they posted), but the effect is the same

A lot of young cops work out, a lot, because often they can get in a situation that requires strength. And if they aren’t strong enough they can get rather hurt. And while it isn’t likely to be every day in most places, with shitforbrains back in office, I’d bet they are betting on more situations, rather than fewer. And of course we have a political party that seems to want to likely end a lot of competition for what they see as the way life should be and make all of us struggle just to exist.

I’ll say that in the lifetimes of others around my age – geezer, (not me of course, people older than me…..)
