On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

With the start of the pandemic, my business travels came to a halt, thus my last submission for “On the Road” was from 2020 (Castle Hohensalzburg). Travel has resumed but I haven’t restarted sharing some of my pictures. I’m now going through my archive and will try to catch up.
Over the years, we spent several of our summer vacations at a resort on the Greek island of Kos. 2020 was perfect, because as a covid precaution the resort was intentionally running at 50% capacity, 2021 was almost back to normal and we rented a car for a day to explore the island. The following pictures are from this road trip to the western part of Kos; we had visited Kos Town in earlier years.

This windmill is in the village of Antimachia. It was renovated and is still active – grinding flour for biscuits to be sold to tourists. There is a lot of wind on Kos, my guess is that most is caused by the hot land creating thermic winds.

The cemetery of Kefalos. Graves are not dug into the ground, but tombs are used instead. There is no organized layout and no neat row of tombs.

This is the view from Kefalos to the west, towards Kefalou Ko, the nature park on the tip of the island.

We passed Kefalos, this is the view back towards the city, looking east. Mt. Dikeos can be seen in the background.

These small white churches with blue roofs are vey common in Greece. This one is Εξωκλήσι Ανάστασης του Χριστού.

The Saint John the Baptist Holy Orthodox Chapel of Thyme sits on a ridge overlooking the sea to the west. This is how it the interior looks like.

There are many modern, high comfort resorts on Kos, but you could also venture here to get a feeling of a bit more traditional Greece holidays: an open beach, with a taverna nearby serving authentic food. This is Agios Theologos Beach.

Driving back, we head into the direction of Kefalos again. The old town is a bit hidden from this view, you can mainly see the beach area with its hotels.

For a sunset dinner, Zia is the village to go. It’s farther east, located on the north slopes of Mt. Dikeo and the evening vistas are spectacular. The church in this picture is Kímissis tis Theotókou.

That cemetery looks like my storage closet.
Gorgeous photos.

Kos has a beautiful color palette–the blue and white is very calming.

When I was a young man I visited Greece several times. I hope I can get back before I die.

Love the difference between the exteriors and interiors of the churches. What gorgeous vistas everywhere! Thanks!

Such a picturesque island. Looks like a place for a relaxing holiday.

Glad you like the photos. Greetings from Copenhagen. And yes, there will be pictures. :-)

Change “tombs” to “buildings” and you have described Boston!

@otmar: These are beautiful!
Happy to see you sharing your trips with us again!

Looks lovely! I especially like the windmill pic.

What a beautiful place! Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

@Steve in the ATL: Ain’t that the truth! This Tennessee teenager was driving around by the waterfront on some brick streets and suddenly was faced with a plaza where five streets came together. There were no painted lanes and there were steel structures everywhere supporting the overhead tracks. It was and probably still is chaos
ETA: Wonderful photographs @otmar:, thanks.

Really nice, especially the windmill. It doesn’t feel like five years since you last shared photos – I remember enjoying the last round.

Happy to see you, Otmar, and with photos of such a beautiful place.

Kos seems lovely. I have a soft spot for Greek islands and Kos is one I have yet to visit. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to a Copenhagen series. I’ll match with a French Alps one (just returned on Sunday).
