Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Let me file that under fuck it.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The willow is too close to the house.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

It’s a saturation sportsball-watching night here in Detroit: first, the Lions at Bengals (the tigers I want to lose); the the Tigers in Seattle with Tarik Skubal at 8pm our time.

Food and drinks are ready, so let the games begin! Cheers, my friends! Good luck to your teams. 🥂

PS. I am an extreme lurker so it’s very strange to be such an early commenter.

    Go Cubs go.

It’s easy to get annoyed about baseball nostalgia.  It is nevertheless true that approximately 70 years ago, my grandfather took my father and my 8 year-old-self to Wrigley field, a place where I have ended up taking my children and grandchildren, sitting in seats in pretty much the same place.  Things change pretty quickly in Chicago and the US, so I feel lucky to have a physical reminder of my link in a five-generation long chain.

    Here’s Fried’s line for the Yankees:  3.0+ IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 1 K, 7 R (all earned)

Warren, his replacement, so far:  1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 K, 4 R (all earned), 2 inherited runners scored.  Not an improvement.

Just watched Aaron Boone’s post interview. He was literally holding back tears. His job as Yankees manager is over if they lose this series.

Actually, I like him, and hope he goes to a team that would be thrilled to have him. I can think of several.

@Jackie: I hope so! I do love baseball, especially my Tigers. They have won 2 of their World Series titles during my lifetime, in 1968 and 1984 (and should have won in 2006 and 2012 🤬) and both of those were super exciting from start to finish. What an experience! Last ten years have been largely awful, so no matter what else happens, these last two seasons have been surprisingly good. We’re on the right track, though I have no idea how they rose from their September collapse. I’m still not convinced they have enough left in the tank to win a 5 game series unless they sweep.

Seattle looks sharp, and they won the season series, so good luck to them too!

I was at Tiger Stadium in the back row of the lower deck right behind the Tigers dugout with my dad and my cousin to see Denny McLain win his 30th game in ’68, which was a come-from-behind walkoff double by Willie Horton in the bottom of the 9th!

If it weren’t for Polanco, you’d have to say Skubal is having a very impressive day on the mound for Detroit.  Thru 7 full (97 pitches): 9 Ks, only one walk, 3 hits . . . plus Polanco 2 solo hrs.  But with no run support….

@wj: Alas, it’s the sad story of a lot of the second half of the season for the Tigers. They were tearing it up until mid July; then got very streaky and finally fell apart.

Hinch is worth every dime they pay him.  They won yesterday, but the Tigers struck out 16xs yesterday and left on 20 RISP. That’s terrible.

I watched it all happen and I still can’t believe we knocked Cleveland out after they hammered us for 6 games in 2 weeks.

The pitching perforance by Trey Yesavage against the Yankees was one of the most remarkable things I’ve seen in sport, let alone baseball.

I wasn’t entirely convinced it was a great idea calling him up in his first season in professional baseball. His debut against the Rays, however, convinced me I was wrong. Even so, 5 innings, no hits, just one walk and 11 strikeouts was way beyond anything the Jays could have hoped for. I must say, starting him in Game 2 at home was a masterstroke with Bieber scheduled for Game 3 in the Bronx.
