Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Stand up, dammit!

All hail the time of the bunny!

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Bark louder, little dog.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Monday Night Open Thread

Well, politically, today has been another absolute shitshow, and currently Needy Amin is shitposting about China, Canada, and the NHL. I kid you not:

Monday Night Open Thread 40

Putting aside the fact that only seven teams in the NHL are Canadian and I think we could figure out how to manage the Stanley Cup without them, THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. And it makes NO SENSE. This is just verbal diarrhea and this man is insane. Republicans are monsters and no one should ever vote for them again.

In foreign news, this is called ethnic cleansing:

Israel’s government has taken unilateral steps to give itself greater control over the occupied West Bank, challenging President Trump’s opposition to Israeli annexation of the territory in a move widely considered a violation of international law.

The measures, which make it easier for Jewish settlers to buy land and undercut the Palestinian Authority in parts of the West Bank that it administers, appear to flout important agreements that Israel signed under the Oslo peace process decades ago.

The changes were made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet at a closed-door meeting on Sunday. By enhancing Israel’s control over West Bank territory the Palestinians want for a future state, they effectively advance the cause of annexation by degrees — continuing a strategy that the government has been pursuing for years.

But they come after Mr. Trump’s recent, explicit rejection of annexation, his acknowledgment of the Palestinians’ aspirations to statehood — made explicit in his peace plan for Gaza — and his support for political talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Mr. Netanyahu, who is set to travel to Washington to meet with Mr. Trump on Wednesday, did not announce the changes. Instead, they were detailed after Sunday’s meeting by two government ministers who oversee West Bank policy.

One was Bezalel Smotrich, the far-right finance minister, who has pushed through a host of other measures extending Israel’s footprint in the West Bank.

“We are deepening our roots in all parts of the Land of Israel and burying the idea of a Palestinian state,” Mr. Smotrich said in a statement.

History will not judge the United States well for our only contributions to this, which is to just keep sending money and bombs, blocking any attempts at accountability in the UN, and arresting everyone who protests this and labelling them as a vile anti-Semite. Y’all did catch that Israel, despite vilifying everyone who mentioned the death count, actually admitted “Yeah so ok, we did kill that many people.”

And so help me god every time we talk about Israel some vile anti-Semite appears out of nowhere and starts with their bullshit. I will not put up with that. You all are smart, you can figure out how to be appalled by something without turning into a lowlife bigot spewing tropes and anti-Semitic slurs.

Every fucking Trump voter in Wilder, Idaho, can do squat thrusts on fire hydrants (gift link):

People in Wilder, Idaho, didn’t give much thought to the dusty horse track west of town known as La Catedral Arena, where, on Sundays in the summer and early fall, vendors sold horchata and tacos, announcers called race results in Spanish and immigrant families gathered for reasonably priced fun.

But when federal agents swarmed the track on Oct. 19 — weapons drawn, a helicopter overhead, unmarked S.U.V.s screeching in on dirt roads — they did more than crack an alleged gambling ring and increase deportation numbers. They shattered Wilder’s innocent belief that its out-of-the-way location and deep-red politics could isolate the town from the raids overtaking other parts of the country.

“We rely on Hispanic labor,” said Chris Gross, a second-generation farmer who grows sweet corn seed and mint in Wilder. She added, “Nobody thought something like this could happen here.”

The immigration raid on La Catedral racetrack “nearly destroyed” the community of Wilder, a town of 1,725 about 10 miles from the Oregon-Idaho border.
The raid on La Catedral may not have made the national headlines that immigration sweeps in Minneapolis, Chicago and Los Angeles did, but it illustrated the depth and breadth of President Trump’s effort to find and rid the country of undocumented immigrants; 75 people rounded up that day have since been deported, according to local immigration lawyers.

Beyond the economic impact, there is the social one — the profound sense of uncertainty and suspicion that has filtered down, even to a town like Wilder, Idaho.

The raid “nearly destroyed” the community, said David Lincoln, a longtime Wilder resident and executive director of a nonprofit economic development agency serving rural towns in western Idaho. Wilder won’t really know the impact until planting season begins this spring.

I hope your crops rot in the fields and you spend your remaining days eating unseasoned chicken.

In the least surprising news ever, Maxwell offered nothing in her testimony:

Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, refused to answer questions from the US House Oversight Committee on Monday.

Maxwell appeared virtually for a closed-door deposition from the Texas prison where she is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking.

Republican House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer said that “as expected”, Maxwell pleaded the Fifth Amendment, invoking her right to remain silent.

“This is obviously very disappointing,” he said. “We had many questions to ask about the crimes she and Epstein committed, as well as questions about potential co-conspirators.”

It’s funny watching the ramifications of the Epstein Rape Scandal play out overseas and over here it sometimes feels like no one has suffered any consequences or ever will. And by funny I mean it makes me want to smash things.

The race to replace Mike Sherril’s house seat is down to the wire, and I think if it holds this way, is a sign of things to come:

Analilia Mejia’s lead in the special Democratic primary for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district has increased from 676 votes to 868 after more votes were counted in Essex County.

Mejia now leads former Rep. Tom Malinowski, 18,512 to 17,644. Former Lt. Governor Tahesha Way is in third place with 11,032 votes, followed by Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill with 9,116.

A former labor leader and New Jersey Working Families state director, Mejia served as national political director of Bernie Sanders’ 2024 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

More votes are expected to be counted on Monday.

Essex County has 704 uncounted vote-by-mail ballots and 1,171 provisionals; Morris is showing 440 VBMs still unprocessed and 694 provisional ballots still uncounted; and Passaic reports 294 uncounted mail-in ballots and 85 provisionals. An unspecified number of these ballots were cast in the Republican primary.

I think we are going to see a wave of young progressive and a lot of people of color elected in this fall- a Mamdani wave. I hope to Allah we pick up the House and Senate/

It’s totally fucking normal for the President of the United States to be having an internet beef with a 25 year old female Olympic skiier:

Chloe Kim and Eileen Gu, two Olympic standouts who have faced their share of hate over the years, each weighed in Monday on Donald Trump’s bashing of their friend, American freeskier Hunter Hess, for having said he didn’t back the U.S. president’s heightened crackdown on immigrants.

“I think in moments like these, it is really important for us to unite and kind of stand up for one another for all that’s going on,” said Kim, the two-time Olympic gold medalist whose parents are South Korean immigrants and who has faced racism throughout her career for her Asian heritage.

It is dinner time! More zucchini lasagne- if you missed it here was a picture from last night:

Lasagne Update

It is so good. Then off to watch the Olympics and more of Season 11 of Alone. My favorite guy, William, is still in it (NO SPOILERS). He totally reminds me of a fraternity brother- just a laid back country boy (albeit with a scottish accent) who likes animals and sort of takes things in stride. And the shit he can do with a stick and a snare.

PS- I think I am doing better with not using the f word but let me tell you it is not easy.

And yes, It just infuriates and amazes me that the folks involved in the Epstein crimes are just going on about their business as if this is just normal. I suppose, for them, it is.

Also Raw Story tells me it was indeed Trump who dropped the dime on Epstein, in 2006. (per the latest drop of the Epstein files)

The raid on La Catedral may not have made the national headlines that immigration sweeps in Minneapolis, Chicago and Los Angeles

The raid didn’t get headlines because the community didn’t start following ICE, whistling warnings, recording arrests, and just generally standing up for their brown neighbors.

@Dorothy A. Winsor:  Let me just say that we, in Detroit, are extremely grateful to the Canadian government for building the Gordie Howe International Bridge.  It’s been a joy watching it go up, and it will be wonderful to travel to Canada more easily.

Currently the only bridge between Detroit and Windsor is a privately owned one that dumps into downtown Windsor.  The family that owns it (Morouns) has done nothing but obstruct the building of a new bridge for YEARS–they make a lot of money selling duty free gas and such. Finally the Canadian government said fuck this and made a deal with Obama, apparently.  They are fully funding it. The new bridge will bypass both central Detroit and Windsor, going from an interstate highway to a major Canadian highway.

P.S.  The same family bought Michigan central station in 1996 and allowed it to rot for years. It became an eyesore and an embarrassment to the city.  Ford finally bought it in 2018, and has been restoring it.  Our organization held a fundraiser there last fall.  The work that has been done so far is magnificent.

The Gordie Howe Bridge will connect Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan.

There is a privately owned toll bridge that already does this, The Ambassador Bridge, but,……………….

The Bridge, which is mostly used by Commercial Users, dumps semi trailers onto city streets, miles away for a highway at both ends, handles 25% of all Canada-US truck crossings,  where the Gordie Howe Bridge goes freeway to freeway.

In 2004, a joint announcement by the federal government of the United States and Government of Canada confirmed a new border crossing would be constructed between Detroit and Windsor. A bi-national committee was formed to manage the project.[14][13] An extension of Ontario Highway 401 to the future bridge was also proposed – construction on this extension began in 2011, with the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway opening in 2015.[15]

The various environmental approvals for the project were approved in both the United States and Canada in 2009.[13][16]

In 2009, the Ohio State Senate passed a non-binding resolution expressing support for the crossing, and urged the Michigan government to pass it, due to Canada being Ohio’s largest foreign trade partner, with US$35.8 billion per year in goods traded between Ohio and Canada.[17] In 2011, the bridge was tentatively scheduled for completion in 2016, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.[18] It was estimated the bridge would generate $70.4 million in toll revenues in its first year of operation.[19]

illustrated the depth and breadth of President Trump’s effort to find and rid the country of undocumented immigrants

I wish the media would stop lying like this. Trump is going after any immigrant they can deport. There are people here legally who have been deported, because they are seeking asylum. They’re here legally, but the DOJ decided to cancel their legal status because (1) they could, and (2) they are racist motherfuckers.

They are just working their way through people that are here legally, but they feel are easier to deport because they do not have a Green Card, like Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Once these people are deported, the Green Card holders are next, then the naturalized U.S. citizens, and then (depending on the Roberts court) people born in the United States to immigrant parents.

They are not going to stop trying to create a white conservative Christian ethnostate unless we stop them.

I think we are going to see a wave of young progressive and a lot of people of color elected in this fall- a Mamdani wave. I hope to Allah we pick up the House and Senate/

    @cain:

i have no idea what he’s going on about in regards to Canada. OK, so they are building a bridge.

The Ambassador Bridge that connects Michigan with Windsor, Ontario is old, is only four lanes, and is privately owned.

A new bridge would benefit both countries.

The Ambassador Bridge is an international suspension bridge across the Detroit River that connects Detroit, Michigan, United States, with Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Opened in 1929, the toll bridge is the busiest international border crossing in North America in terms of trade volume, carrying more than 25% of all merchandise trade between the United States and Canada by value.[3] A 2004 Border Transportation Partnership study showed that 150,000 jobs in the Detroit–Windsor region and US$13 billion in annual production depend on the Detroit–Windsor international border crossing.[4]

The bridge is one of the few privately owned US–Canada crossings; it was owned by Grosse Pointe billionaire Manuel Moroun, until his death in July 2020, through the Detroit International Bridge Company in the United States[5] and the Canadian Transit Company in Canada.[6] In 1979, when the previous owners put it on the New York Stock Exchange and shares were traded, Moroun was able to buy shares, eventually acquiring the bridge.[7][8] The bridge carries 60 to 70 percent of commercial truck traffic in the region.[9][10] Moroun also owned the Ammex Detroit duty-free stores at both the bridge and the tunnel.[11]

    SNIP

In June 2012, the Canadian and United States governments approved the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge proposed by the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) commission.[47] The new bridge further downriver between Detroit and Windsor will be owned and operated by the Windsor–Detroit Bridge Authority, a Crown corporation owned by the Canadian federal government.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambassador_Bridge

The Gordie Howe International Bridge (French: Pont International Gordie-Howe), known during development as the Detroit River International Crossing and the New International Trade Crossing, is a cable-stayed international bridge across the Detroit River, currently under construction. The crossing will connect Detroit, Michigan, United States with Windsor, Ontario, Canada, by linking Interstate 75 in Michigan with Highway 401 in Ontario (through the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway extension of Highway 401). The bridge will provide uninterrupted freeway traffic flow, as opposed to the current configuration with the nearby Ambassador Bridge that connects to city streets on the Ontario side. The bridge is named after Canadian ice hockey player Gordie Howe, whose celebrated career included 25 years with the Detroit Red Wings, and who died two years before construction began.

I think he’s confusing the Chinese banning the series with China banning NHL teams from playing. That’s the only thing I can think of because I really don’t think China cares one way or the other if hockey is played.

I mean, they hosted the Winter Olympics and didn’t recoil from the horror of it all.

She had planted an entire pack of zucchini seeds.

    We lost our back yard.

    Neighbors stopped answering the door.

    The Food Bank banned her.

When she passed, 25 years later, there were still bricks of frozen zucchini in her deep freezer along side a frozen chunk of her wedding cake, (a white fruit cake).

Just for shits and giggles, I took a brick, broke off a chunk and made zucchini loaf.

First time I ate anything zucchini in 24 years.

If it had been Dark Fruitcake, and she had taken it out every year, thawed it, and then basted it with Dark Rum before sealing it and returning it to the freezer, I probably would have given it a try.

One of the Expeditions looking for traces of Franklin, found a cashe of canned goods, including Dark Fruitcake and Plum Pudding canned in Dark Rum. Those two, tested okay, edible, other than the lead content, after 200 years. Back then the lid was soldered on to the can with lead solder.

Lead poisoning is still believed to be the key reason for the Franklin Expedition’s loss.

@Smiling Happy Guy (aka boatboy_srq): You would think that any place with an at-least-questionably-documented workforce would be immediately prepared for exactly this.

You’d think so, but there’s this weird dynamic around immigration in white peoples’ minds where they divide particularly Hispanics into two groups: the evil MS-13 gangbangers that have overrun cities like San Francisco and New York and Superbowl halftime shows and traffic little girls all up and down the southern border, and sweet Maria, the lady from Guatemala who takes such good care of their grandma at the nursing home. They’re now shocked to find out that the former are largely figments of their imagination that Fox and Republicans have blown all out of reasonable proportion and to make up for it are now out to deport people like Maria and they can’t make sense of it.

But this *is* what they voted for. I wish there were a way of forcing them to live with their decisions that didn’t also involve destroying the lives of the poor immigrants who were the backbone of your local economy.

From the Hellsite: Don’t piss off the Aussies:

The US Embassy Asked Australians A Question. They Immediately Regretted It.

The US Embassy in Australia posted what they thought was a helpful service announcement: “Planning to travel to the United States? Apply for Global Entry for faster processing at US airports.” Five minutes later, the comment section looked like a crime scene.

“No thanks. We’ve been watching how your border security operates.” And that was one of the polite ones.

When Australians Say What Everyone Else Is Thinking

What the embassy got was a masterclass in Australian directness, that beautiful cultural trait where Australians say exactly what’s on their mind with the confidence of a nation that’s already survived everything trying to kill them. “Why would anyone want to go to the US right now?” “I’d rather go to China.” “‘Sup? Tourist arrivals down a bit? “ No think pieces. No diplomatic hedging. Just Australians doing what they do best: cutting through the bullshit with the precision of a hot knife through butter. Canada suddenly became the hottest destination on Earth. In thirty seconds, Australians gave Canada more positive PR than their entire tourism board manages in a year.

The Efficiency Pitch That Backfired Spectacularly

The embassy was selling speed. Faster lines! Quicker processing! Skip the queue! Australians heard: “We can now reject you more efficiently.” One person asked the real question: “Does this include snooping on five years’ worth of my social media and expecting me to turn over the names of friends and family?” Another wanted to know if they’d be shot before or after the automated kiosk. Fair question, honestly. Someone else thoughtfully added: “Keep that comment on record for your review of my social media.” That’s peak Australian energy – not just brutally honest, but also doing the paperwork for you. Here’s the thing that must have stung: Australians weren’t furious. They were uninterested. The embassy didn’t trigger outrage. They triggered the most devastating response possible:

    “Yeah, nah.”

When an Australian says “yeah nah,” the conversation is done. Finished. No amount of convenience features will resurrect it. “There’s plenty of other journeys to make, I’ll head there first! Canada sounds nice.” The post promised faster entry. Australians asked: Faster entry to what? An interrogation? A phone search? A political situation they’d prefer to watch from 10,000 miles away? As one person put it: “I grew up watching Disneyland, Hanna-Barbera, dreaming of visiting the US. I’ve travelled extensively to Europe & Asia… there’s no way under your current situation would I consider it!” That’s the sound of childhood dreams being archived in the “maybe later” folder.

The Beautiful Chaos Of Australian Commentary

American diplomacy runs on optimism and carefully crafted messaging. Australian social media runs on instinct, honesty, and the civic duty to warn others before they accidentally book flights. One person said: “Always wondered what it would be like in 1930s Germany. Guess now I can find out.” “Not going through my email accounts for the last ten years. Go fuck yourselves.” That second one really captures the Australian spirit: practical assessment followed by a firm boundary.

    What The Embassy Actually Discovered

They discovered something important: Australians will absolutely tell you the truth, especially when you’re not ready to hear it. They discovered that you can’t marketing-speak your way past a reputation crisis. And they discovered that when you ask Australians for feedback, you should probably prepare for Australians to give you feedback. Raw, Real, unfiltered, sometimes profane, always honest feedback. The kind that comes from a nation that’s geographically isolated enough to have perspective, culturally confident enough to share it, and collectively sunburned enough to have zero patience for nonsense.

    A Faster Way To Somewhere

They’re Not Going Global Entry now means something different to Australians: expedited processing for a trip they’ve already cancelled. The embassy promised efficiency. Australians responded with the most Australian thing possible – complete honesty delivered with zero corporate filter. And honestly? The world needs more of that energy. You’ve got to love Australians. They’ll tell you exactly what they think, make you laugh while doing it, and somehow leave you feeling like you just got excellent advice. Even if that advice is: “Yeah nah, we’re good thanks mate.”
