I loved this explanation because you can send it to your grandma or grandpa and they will totally understand. Your crazy uncle might be a lost cause.
These guys are not afraid to tell the truth, regardless of consequences. I haven’t seen any slowing down on their favorite causes – raising funds for injured and rescue dogs. They seem to be raising funds like crazy every time they need to.
I have a bunch of backlog good news and climate change info, I just need to find the time to write it up for the blog. We could all use an emotional recharge, so I will make it a priority this weekend.
Here’s the requisite pups photo:
I have no idea what’s going on, except poor Scout always so put upon. And I’m sure I’m being judged and found wanting. What’s new, LOL
Totally open thread…

Well, lemme tell you all about it. Oh, you mean your pup. LOL
Thanks for the cute pic of the pups.
Added: the video didn’t play for me.

@Scout211: OMG, that made me guffaw! 😘

Thank you for posting this!

I really like that video from We Rate Dogs, because what it says is true. What’s scarier is how the systems can also pair with information on phones. Example: A friend has used a function on his phone to tag/identify all the people in his photos. When I get to his house, he’s alerted that I am at the door. Not that someone is at the door, but “bluefoot is at the front door” based on facial rec from photos he has of me. I don’t know what system he has, nor how much of his photo album data is being shared to the system, but it’s creepy as hell.
it makes me want to get the “ugly shirt” from a William Gibson novel to confound facial recognition.

Here is the YouTube version if you can’t view the video in TaMara’s post.
Scary stuff.

This (Ring cooperating with LEO w/out warrants) has been the case -forever-. I’m glad this guy is publicizing it.

I don’t know what’s going on and I don’t do football but I hear it was the “liberal” left-coast team that beat the east coast MAGAts. I take that as a good sign …

I cannot leave my house without a picture from ring. We do not have a ring camera. It does not matter. These cameras are everywhere, recording everything. Many folks have them running inside as well to capture “special moments”. I, no doubt, make myself a nuisance by announcing I do not consent to recording.
How I hate all of this. All of these cameras clicking all of the time feels extraordinarily dystopian.

I was just reading Robert Riech’s facebook post and did something haven’t done before; I read the comments. I had no idea that Rhodes Scholarship was a dirty nasty horrible thing to have, or that being an educator was a despicable job or that making money from books you wrote made him part of the elite. What I do know is the level of crap that was dumped on him for a post that was a couple lines set against a red colored background was horrendous.
I fully understand why some people who choose to write on open forums limit those who can comment; I also understand that many take their courage and put themselves in jeopardy for speaking the truth.

We Rate Dogs Guy has been on fire lately. He’s good at it, too.

@Karen Gail: Facebook is a nazi bar now, thanks to Zuckerberg. And that was, just as it was with Twitter, a deliberate choice. So anything even remotely anti-Trump, anti-ICE or even moderate are instantly dogpiled and “freeped” by MAGAts who have nothing better to do all day than swarm any liberals who dare show their faces on Facebook.

@ArchTeryx:
Please! It’s a Nazi porn bar. (With apologies to Kara Swisher)

The thing about warehouses being used to “store” people still has me angry; strangely, my first thought was “it is nearly impossible to find the bathroom” when shopping at Lowes. All these people without access to toilets much less showers and what about food? The plan to put people in warehouses ranks right up there with “The Trail of Tears.”
Karen Gail
@ArchTeryx: Which is why Jim Wright only allows comments from people who join his group and he airlocks all the idiots whose comments I read today on Robert Riech’s page.

I can attest to the efficiency of NextDoor in finding lost pets. I watch my account daily in my town and find several a day. Facebook is good for this too. I don’t do FB, but my GF does. Same deal. Several lost pets a day found and returned to their humans.
I don’t have, and won’t have, a Ring camera. I’m not that scared.

@HopefullyNotCassandra: a friend of mine got one of the google home assistants as a gift. After a month, out of curiosity he requested from google the transcripts and other data that it captured. He was so horrified by how much was being sent to google he threw it away.
i think about that now that “AI” is wrapped into a lot of platforms automatically, scraping data. I can turn off seeing AI output but I don’t think I can turn off AI scraping. For instance, with Gmail.

I feel embarrassed that I put a link to an article about that Ring thing into the newsletter I edit. I obviously did not spend enough time thinking about it. Won’t make *that* mistake again!
HopefullyNotCassandra
@bluefoot: I hadn’t thought of AI scraping, another intrusion to dedicate my time to attempting to stop.
These bros scraping for every picayune detail on us, while claiming ICE/CBP agents need to go around masked, what a dismal world they are trying to create

I recall seeing that Ring ad in the Super Bowl, and it was immediately obvious how poorly it worked at finding dogs. Thanks for this, TaMara.

@ArchTeryx: I’m on Facebook primarily for the friends and family aspect, but the political stuff I share is all stuff everyone here would agree with. (Sometimes it comes from here.)
Today there was right-wing crap all over my page, “sponsored”. Breitbart and other groups I never even heard of. I had to mark at least seven posts as “never show me this again”. If that happened to me, who post nothing that would make me an audience for that, what must a normal Facebook user be seeing?
NutmegAgain
Well done Mr We Rate Dogs. Good boy!! You get an extra delish treat for that.
Also, as always, those Danes are just so wonderful to see. Thanks for sharing.

@bluefoot: There is supposedly settings you can turn off to avoid the scraping. I don’t recall them offhand but you can look them up easily. I made a point to do it as soon as they introduced the scraping. You might prevent anything new this way, but its probably to late for all your old emails.
JBWoodford
@mardam422: I saw a comment on Bluesky that Ring cameras or similar make more sense when you have valuable items delivered to your porch when you’re not home. There are better solutions to that particular problem, though.
Miss Bianca
@dnfree: make your life on FB way less irritating by looking up and installing “FB Purity.” If you absolutely have to be on FB for some reason (and I do, alas), it will turn it back into a semi-functional site and save your sanity at the same time.

I chose to use a Eufy doorbell camera because it’s only linked to my account, no web link and I don’t store anything on the cloud. Part of my reason was cheapness. I didn’t want monthly fees. I try to not allow any web scraping etc but it is hard. I do feel Congress should be passing standardized protective laws that prevent companies from even gathering too much info, let alone selling it, even to other companies that have the same owners.
I did get the camera to find a lost cat, I wanted to know if he found my front door when I wasn’t there or was asleep. I did the standard things of putting his litter box out so he could smell his way home etc but I did not find him. Neighbors on Nextdoor and Facebook also tried. I was not one of the lucky ones. So now I know we have a lot of strays in the neighborhood and I ended up feeding a bunch more besides my own. My camera tells me when there is another one and if it’s a new one. It’s not supposed to film small animals but it does. I delete after viewing.

I don’t have a Ring doorbell camera. Most my neighbors do. The terms of having one are such that you lose all rights to privacy on your front yard. Ring is able to watch and resend your footage to groups that buy the feeds. Yea, no. Not on my land at least.

Out of Minneapolis they tell us to disconnect our doorbell things. We here in Ohio have ADT and the front cameras show us nothing useful at all except how much traffic our street has. Three years on the contract but I am happy to unplug the front at once.

@ArchTeryx: they are even showing up in the crafting groups on Facebook (mostly the knitting, embroidery, and cross-stitch groups which is why I asked about how to do nasty insults in Russian so that I can speak to them in their native language)
