I am so busy I forgot to put up a post, and I don’t have time to write anything because the new episode of a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms drops in 15 minutes and we are HOOKED to this show it really is as good as the best seasons of GoT. Just the pacing, the story, ending every episode on the right note. Plus with all the big Game of Thrones feel and sound. Just great.
So here is a place if you do not want to talk about the misery going on in Ukraine. It’s so fucking depressing to think about.

War for Ukraine Day 1,452: Ukraine Faces Another Long Deadly Night
TheOtherHank
I’m waiting for all the episodes to drop so I can subscribe to HBO, watch them all, and cancel the HBO subscription.

Lunar new year Tuesday. Clean house, straighten things up.
Archon
It is a fun show that you can watch very casually because the stakes are MUCH lower than usual Game of Thrones.
Doug R
Isn’t it wonderful to have a GOT show that’s not all self serious at least to start?
TheOtherHank
Though, when I think about this show I almost always hear in my head Maester Aemon saying “Egg, I dreamed I was old.”
Gloria DryGarden
There was a spot of good news in the comments on the Ukraine page; I feel happy to know 95% of Kiev has power. That’s pretty wonderful.
Rich Gardner
I’d seen bits and pieces of it and just watched the first full episode. Yeah, good stuff!
Eric S.
I’m a huge GoT nerd. I’ve read all the books, uhm, too many times. I hosted a dinner party for the entire GoT HBO run.
The Hedge Knight, the short story this series is based on is fantastic. I haven’t starter watching yet but very much looking forward to binging it when they are all available.
Gin & Tonic
I was in Dubrovnik and Split last fall, and they’re busy flogging that GoT stuff for every Euro they can.

On a slightly after dark Olympics topic, how can Olympic village run out of condoms?
On the other hand, surely the folks who know they’ll be celebrating in this way, know enough to plan ahead and bring what they might need? How hard is it to estimate how busy you might be, what you might get up to to blow off steam, and celebrate after your events?
One of my friends made comments elsewhere about finding people at your elite athletic level to be a good match ( in the sack), and that they would not wait until after their competition, but would consider it just a workout. I’ve never competed, I don’t know, I’d just want all my strength mustered for my events.
any thoughts?
Gin & Tonic
@Gloria DryGarden: Kyiv, not Kiev, please.
Archon
@Gloria DryGarden: 10,000 condoms running out in 3 days sounds like a lot but then I found out 300,000 condoms were provided for in the Olympics in Paris.
Jive Turkin
@Gloria DryGarden: i remember reading some olympic diary from a volleyball player. He basically said his roommate was either playing volleyball or screwing, with some sleep and meals squeezed in. At the Athens olympics the organizers supplied 130,000 condoms for 16,000 athletes and officials.
Trivia Man
@Gloria DryGarden: as coach stressed to rocky, “women weaken legs, kid”
Jay
@Trivia Man:
What about “Heated Rivalry?”.

I’ve found Hedge Knight boring, drawn out, and exposition heavy. But maybe that’s just me.

@TheOtherHank
Or wait until Netflix brings HBO into the fold.
;)

I am liking the story arc of Sir Duncan, but the 30m episodes are too short. I just want a bit more each week.
MagdaInBlack
I got nuthin, because I don’t watch stuff.
But, it was a lovely 60 degree day in Chicago-land. False spring, of course, but I’ll take it.
Old School
@Gloria DryGarden: I would guess a fair number of condoms return home with the athletes as souvenirs.
NotMax
@MagdaInBlack
Never watched GoT but from what I’ve heard about it and gleaned from multiple posts about it here when it first ran it’s too violence prone for my tastes.
MagdaInBlack
@NotMax: I have watched enough clips, out of curiosity, to know that it there is too much casual and deliberate cruelty for my taste.
I mean, we’re watching it in real time in this country, so…ya know, I feel I don’t need more.
and that’s just me.
geg6
@MagdaInBlack:
I tried to watch GoT and got three episodes in and noped out. I had a similar reaction to Breaking Bad. The violence is bad enough but when there are no likeable characters at all??? Nope. Nope. Nope.
Fair Economist
@geg6: Game of Thrones had some likeable characters. They almost all die, though.
16 years and still no Winds of Winter book. Going for the record, woohoo!
Gloria DryGarden
@Gin & Tonic: thank you, I wasn’t sure. I’ll have to teach my auto correct. Kyiv.
if there’s a front pager around, could you kindly please correct my misspelling of Kyiv? Comment #6
Gloria DryGarden
@Jive Turkin: um, that’s not even 10 per person. It’s more than two weeks, and there’s a lot of youthful high energy going on. Your volleyball player might have run through his 10 in little time…
different-church-lady
@Gloria DryGarden: When do they do the actual sports things?
Jay
@different-church-lady:
Olympic Sex is it’s own “sport”.
Has it’s own scoring system, it’s own categories, it’s just not, for the most part, televised
They don’t even publicly rate the dismount.
different-church-lady
@Jay: Right. So considering it only happens every four years, I suppose they’re all trying to make the most of it.
Jay
@different-church-lady:
Kinda think of it, like the “Provincials”. A bunch of athletes , 2 chaperones per sport team, 2 to a room, maybe an hour of actual competition over the weekend, a few hours of warm up and practice.
The BC High School Swim Team competition was “epic”.
Did it two years in a row.
NotMax
@Gloria DryGarden
Not a biggie. it took months to break some here of the habit of typing “the Ukraine.”
;)
Gloria DryGarden
@different-church-lady: thank you! You have got me roaring with laughter!
Gloria DryGarden
@Jay: so, um, how many condoms per day, would you suggest? It sounds like you might have a fair estimate, having been to one of these epic events
Gloria DryGarden
@NotMax: thanks.
I still feel it’s important, out of respect for a country standing up to a super power in a war that intends genocide and is full of war crimes. Ukraine deserves as much respect and assistance as we can give it. And I respect the Ukrainian people for the stand they are making, under profoundly difficult conditions.
Jay
@different-church-lady:
P.S, I never “got some”. Too clueless.
My team’s Chaperones did though.
After my teams practices, I had an open hour, before my first class.
The pool had an “open hour”.
So. on request, I would “teach” our B team swimmers, on things like proper kicking, tilt breathing, head submersion rules, etc.
Funny thing, that I did not notice until The MVP banquet.
Coach noted that I spent the hour after practice with the B team swimmers, and they were all female.
He brought it up.
There were two things with the B team swimmers,
They did not kick hard enough. So I would hold them up against the pool edge, chest and hips, to get them to kick harder and better.
The second thing, was they would lift their heads out of the water to breathe.
In completion swimming, you just tilt your head, into the slipstream, and breathe.
So I had this thing, where we would wrap our bodies together, explain the exhale through the nose thing, then submerge in a safe space, where a tap on the shoulder, got them back up to the surface.
Boy, was I dumb.
Jay
@Gloria DryGarden:
BC Provincials, Olympic Team Qualifiers, dumb as a post.
I do know that my Chaperones “got some”.
Tony Jay
God Bless those over-stimulated little Lycra-clad bunnies. I bet they keep their ear pods in and helmets on, but wearing your medals is considered gauche.

I’m loving Season 4 of Lincoln Lawyer. It took some self-control to just turn it off rather than stay up all night and watch the rest of it.
And I’m furious at the unsigned op-ed in the Washington Post saying people are retiring too early, old people really love their jobs so why are they quitting and doing nothing when they could be productive. No clue that you can be productive without a paid job.
And Bezos somehow squares firing a bunch of people with complaining that people should be working longer. How does that work, Jeff? And they wonder why people are referencing the French Revolution and pitchforks.

If there’s anybody still up who’s watched the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episodes, I wonder: is there as much gratuitous sex (and misogyny) as there was in GoT? I started watching the first season, and pretty quick I concluded that it was softcore porn (with, yeah, a ton of violence too). I’m a red-blooded guy and all, but not such a fan of watching softcore porn when I was looking for, y’know, regular entertainment.
So, uh, is KotSK the same?

Current recommendation: The Lowdown on Apple. Sterlin Harjo’s new show, set in Tulsa and starting Ethan Hawke.

@prostratedragon: Yeah, there’s a reason that one guy at whatever Masters Of The Universe retreat it was, when asked what he saw in the future for the attending MOTU’s, responded “guillotines”.
Betty Cracker
@Expletive Deleted: Seconded! The seedy yet idealistic lead role is perfect for Hawke, and Tim Blake Nelson is fantastic as a sort of twangy Banquo’s ghost.

@Gretchen: We don’t even get to choose that! I was 62 and senior in my role, but when clients demanded cost cuts, 17 business analysts, all senior and with prior credentials, got dropped.
Health insurance costs saved reportedly ram into the millions, management cut entire groups. Voila! Cheaper prices.
I would still be working if I could find a professional job. Maybe it shouldn’t be so easy to fire people.

Some things are just too much to think about every day unless you have no choice. I religiously read AL’s excellent Plagues and Pandemics weekly summary, but there’s no way I could read a daily post on RFK Jr & Co.’s demolishment of our public health system. And if I wasn’t reading it daily, I’d probably stop reading it altogether, because one day’s developments out of context wouldn’t mean much. And I’d be much less informed about those things than I am now.

@Gloria DryGarden: I knew someone once who could have used up ten or more in 24 hours. He’s old now.

Episode 5 of the Hedge Night was a pretty amazing bit of TV, although I expect the violence was not to everyone’s taste.
