Gorgeous. I was born in Asheville, and grew up a five minute walk from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Makes me miss home.

Oooo! I’m honored!

@Mr Furious:
Beeeeautiful photo!

These photo threads are giving me some serious road-trip joneses. It’s been years since I’ve been on th’ Blue Ridge (got caught in an ice storm there several years back: beautiful; terrifying). The urban life is starting to wear on me again. (And that moonrise photo sure is something.)
Mr Furious
That shot was taken in the early morning hours on Father’s Day. I was low on gas so I was coasting back down towards town and I came up on a bear along the side of the road.
All in all, one of my best days with the camera.
Other landscape shots, plus the bear, here.

#1: beautiful.
#2: Oh, no, I’m back in R’lyeh! #claws out eyes# (neat)

Just for the record.

I took a flight out of DC, back when Clinton was President. Somehow I got bumped up to first class and found myself sitting next to Al Gore’s assistant. There was a big storm we had to divert around and the flight was late. Al Gore’s assistant was going to be late to a family function and started bitching at the Stewardess. The Stewardess was polite and professional.
After the flight, Al Gore’s assistant demanded to see the pilot, and mis-represented the behavior of the Stewardess. Straight out lies. It pleased me to correct the record. This made Al Gore’s assistant very angry.
Al Gore set to become Climate Billionaire.
So one more time, for old time’s sake: THE EARTH IS COOLING.

We were on the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Asheville recently. Snow had fallen above 3000 ft the day before. The mountain tops were frosty white, gorgeous.

@Mr Furious: Heh, you like bears? You should come up here around August. There’s a field of blueberries across from our outdoor rec centre, and on more than one occasions, I’ve seen bears laying back, fat and happy, shoveling berries into their mouths.
I’m damn envious of all of these great photos — I desperately need a better camera.

Anyone have hotel recommendations for Amsterdam? I’m looking for a nice, clean room (with a bathroom) within walking distance of the stuff you see and do in the city. Small, old, boutique hotels are fine, I don’t need a spa, business center or anything like that.

I see a lot of salmon recipes here. Anyone take note of TNR’s depressing article on overfishing? His point is not only that we are destroying our fishing stock and upsetting (permanently) the ecology of the ocean, but that we’re now eating ugly fish (the horror).
Our biological need for protein will eventually lead to soylent green.
Which, with the right spices, will be delicious.

YAY!!!! JACK IS BACK!!!!

Suggested Lexicon Entry: “I see what you did there.” (Urban dictionary’s top definition is as a positive endorsement, though here it’s definitely a snarky put down.)
And “camofare” (which I just saw in another thread).
And maybe the introduction of an “archaic” tag for terms that have fallen out of common use, automatically updated by robots; also, an edit button.

@inkadu: ISWYDT is a put down? I thought it was a nudge-nudge sort of thing (usually with puns).
Maybe it’s just normal people don’t think puns are funny.
@jeffreyw: That was me.
And now I can confess thought I thought of it because if I found him wandering around I’d be SO tempted to keep him. But the I WANNA KEEP HIM would be internal and … I guess the cats crapping every where would help me make up my mind quicker.
Glad he’s home.

“Our first commitment is to provide exceptional service to our clients. The best way to achieve this is to deliver superior long term performance.”
Al Gore states above that his first commitment is to his Clients. This is important to note, and explains why he refuses to debate, or even take questions on, climate science. This also explains why he cut the microphone on the Irish filmmaker who was asking critical questions in Madison, Wisconsin.
Now Al’s commitment to his ‘Clients’, his first commitment, is set to make him a billionaire.
In a world of True and healthy Rhetoric, Al’s first commitment would be to the Truth, and to the State, which has already been so good to him.
THE EARTH IS COOLING.

The wife and I stayed at the Bilderberg for our honeymoon five years back. It’s near the museum district and Leidesplein, which is for my money the place to be. (About 5 minutes’ walk to the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseums.)
Nice boutique; rooms are spare but elegant in the Scandinavian fashion. Friendly staff. Served our purposes well.
Unfortunately, since my visit they’ve switched to non-smoking, so keep in mind as you visit the coffee shops. . .

@jeffreyw: Oh, I’m so happy for you and Mrs. J.! I’m tearing up over here. I’m glad Jack’s home where he belongs.
Tim F., thank you very much for these photo open threads. I love to see how talented our BJers are. And, as Cole has been derelict in his duty of posting pictures of Tunch, these photo open threads help fill the empty Tunch-sized hole inside.

Anybody heard from DemoWoman today?

@IndyLib: She posted @139 on the insomniac thread at about eight this morning. Haven’t seen anything from her since.
I love the moonrise pic. Happy sigh.

Does anyone have any idea why I keep having to add to my pie filter? It’s like the Troll-B-Gone around here isn’t working.

Thanks, hope she’s doing ok, I’m sure we’ll hear from her later in the day.

totally hear you on the overfishing.
Pacific salmon are being essentially made extinct not only from overfishing, but loss of habitat. One of my passions is working to try to restore them, of course probably never to their old prevalence. The Orcas in Puget Sound are totally dependent on the salmon and are also imperiled. Key feeder fish such as the herring, are also diminishing, and they feed the salmon…
I totally believe that we should stop eating wild salmon AND the disease contributing farmed salmon until the wild stocks can replinish a little. Will that happen? I hope so, but given the lack of general interest from the public, chances are we will see our last wild Pacific salmon in the next decade.
On a more upbeat note, thanks to Mr Furious for these amazing photos. They make me believe on a day when I am filled with sadness about many things…
Thanks for that

Mrs J comes home to good news.
She thought he looked thin, weighed him, claims he lost 10 lbs. She fed him some wet food, he gobbled it right down.
I think we are gonna order one of these. h/t anne laurie
asiangrrlMN
@jeffreyw: Aw, love that pic of Mrs. J. and Jack. She could be right if he is dehydrated. It’s possible to lose up to five pounds after a rigorous workout, so ten pounds in three days seems like it could be true.
He’ll be fine in no time with some food, a lotta love, and his buddy, Buddy.
I can’t tell you how happy this makes me.

Hmmm, looks like Drudge has decided to go “Full Enquirer.” Come on, Matt, where’s the sickly member of Congress deathwatch?

I must have missed something over the weekend, because I remember BoB getting banninated last week (to my immense relief). Was he unbanned for some reason, or has he managed to creep back in through an unlocked window or unguarded postern gate?

@jeffreyw: Yay!!! That’s so great! I had such a sinking feeling when he was not turning up, and not turning up some more… happy happy happy.
The internet is a weird place — tearpricks of joy, over someone I’ve never met’s dog whom I’m ever met. ah well.
