When it was just called disfranchised:
In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding Florida and Michigan, their non-binding primaries, and their convention delegates, the word “disenfranchise” has been thrown around quite a bit. Probably, a little too much.
***But there is a way to take this disenfranchisement talk a little too far. Consider this message, distributed by the Clinton campaign yesterday, describing the Obama campaign’s pre-convention strategy:
First, disenfranchise voters — Prevent new votes in Florida and Michigan. Stop voting in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, Kentucky, South Dakota, Montana, West Virginia and Indiana.
The meaning of “disenfranchise” has grown a little fluid of late, but this isn’t it. As Inigo Montoya told us years ago, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
This Wiki definition seems as good as any: “Disenfranchisement or disfranchisement is the revocation of the right of suffrage (the right to vote) to a person or group of people, or rendering a person’s vote less effective, or ineffective, through processes such as gerrymandering.”
Now, how this applies to Florida and Michigan is open to plenty of debate, but for the Clinton campaign to argue that Obama want to “disenfranchise voters” in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, Kentucky, South Dakota, Montana, West Virginia, and Indiana is pretty ridiculous. Obama wants the nomination fight to end, Clinton doesn’t. But that doesn’t mean he wants to “disenfranchise” voters in the remaining states. That’s just how things go for states at the end of the nominating calendar. Indeed, the states know that, and have a choice about moving their contests up.
Steve, of course, is right, and this is just more silly and insidious dribble from the Clinton camp designed to propel Hillary from her large deficits to the nomination, but instead pissing off voters so they are less inclined to vote for Obama, the person who will actually win the nomination.
But more importantly, when did it become disenfranchise? I always thought it was disfranchise? Or did this become acceptable around the same time that “snuck” and “dove” became acceptable replacements for sneaked and dived? Or am I just confused?
El Cid
I live in Georgia. I demand that our state be able to vote next week for the 2024 Democratic primaries. If you try to stop us in any way, it will mean you are disenfranchising me and I will have no choice but to vote Republican or sit at home forever. Nyaa nyaah.
dslak
Doesn’t this mean that both parties in a number of have been disenfranchising their own voters for quite some time now?
ThymeZone
Thanks to the Electoral College and the fact that I live in Arizona, my vote is discarded in November. Arizona will be in the McCain column almost no matter what.

Here in sunny California the general election is a matter of D’s taking our money and then taking us for granted. The R’s simply ignore us.
dslak
They don’t stop there. The California Republicans are also keen on completely ignoring reality, particularly the electoral one.
joel hanes
You are confused. “Snuck” is not a word.
dslak
‘Snuck’ as mentioned as a past tense of ‘sneak’ in both Merriem-Webster and the OED (the OED notes that it’s a variant found only in the U.S.). While M-W recognizes ‘dove’ as a possible past tense varient of ‘dive,’ no such word exists in the OED.
cleek
this is the caliber of thinking Hillary supporters are fighting for.
p.lukasiak
its an attempt at disenfranchisement, John.
The “process” by which Obama wants to “render a peron’s vote less effective” isn’t gerrymandering here — nor does the definition state that it has to be gerrymandering.
The ‘process’ that Obama wants is to be coronated as the “inevitable’ candidate before any of the late states vote, not merely making the votes of people in PA, WV, KY, NC and the other late states “less effective”, but entirely meaningless.
It ain’t over until we, the voters in the late states, say its over — or Obama gets 2025 pledged delegates from the primary/caucus process. We have something to say — and what we have to say is that Obama doesn’t have what it takes to win in November if he can’t win primaries in our states. That’s a message that you don’t want to hear, so you want to disenfranchise us.
Its so typically Republican of you — so reminiscent of the arguments made by the GOP in Florida in 2000 (‘we won, who needs to count all the votes?”) that it would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic.
FearItself
I have never heard “disfranchise”; as long as I can remember, people have used “disenfranchise.” I’m guessing that word is in common use because it typically refers to taking the away votes of people who were previously “enfranchised” via the 15th or 19th amendments, or during the early 19th-century elimination of property qualifications for voting. The term typically has not been used to refer to denying votes to those who had the franchise all along. So we use it for the same reason we use “disempower” instead of “dispower.”
Maybe I should google it and text you the answer.
Oh, and joel hanes is right; “snuck” ain’t a word. The correct verb tense progression is: sneak, sneaked, and done snuck. As in, “The right wing wackos have done snuck into the White House and ruined everything!”
ThymeZone
Um, no, even the interns at the cable tv outlets can tell you that it’s over, in this cycle, when the superdelegates decide how they’ll vote.
That is as obvious as it can be, and anybody who says otherwise, including you, is either out of the loop, or lying.
You are too smart to be out of the loop, so …..
tBone
With that much projection going on, you must be going through lightbulbs at a phenomenal rate.
I’m sure if things had gone according to plan and Hillary was leading, you’d be fighting just as hard to be sure that the late states were heard. Right?
Your hackery would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic.
ThymeZone
Yeah, people who aren’t trying to look like horse’s asses would say “crowned” but hey, whatever.
p.lukasiak
superdelegates can (and have) change their minds. And I remember those reports right before Ohio and Texas of 50 previously undecided superdelegates that Obama had in his pocket… who seem to have vanished into thin air. I mean, given the huge push that Obama has been making to convince super-delegates that he deserves his coronation, you’d think those 50 superdelegates would have announced by now.
But they haven’t. Now I don’t think that the reports were wrong — I think that there were 50 superdelegates ready to put an end to this race based on polls showing Obama winning Texas, and coming close, if not winning, in Ohio.
But when the actual election results came out, they changed their minds. Obama didn’t make the sale — he lost in both Texas (and please don’t tell me about delegate counts; the SDs look at who won the votes) and lost big in Ohio — and demonstrated that he wasn’t as strong a candidate as he claimed.
ThymeZone
Well, you better hope they aren’t reading your posts, then.
Right now you are a giant neon billboard for getting Clinton off the stage with a hook.
p.lukasiak
If things had gone according to plan, this race would be over… Obama would be the Democratic version of Huckabee after ST.
But your real question isn’t about things “going according to plan”, its what I’d do if the current situation was reversed. And what I’d be saying is that my candidate is good enough to continue to consistently build upon her lead, and that the late states will just reinforce the fact that my candidate deserves the nomination.
I wouldn’t be saying “its over, and everything else is a waste of time”, I’d be saying “its over, because my candidate is going to continue to build upon her lead, and beat your candidate consistently.”
Or at least that is what I’d be saying if I had confidence in my candidate. If I was afraid that my candidate was actually weaker than yours, I’d probably be doing exactly what the Obama camp is doing now — trying to end it before my weaknesses are even more fully exposed.
BH Buck
TZ, you absolutely crack me up!
hehehe
p.a.
merriam-webster online has disfranchise without a definition, has disenfranchise with definition (deprive of a right esp. voting rights). enter disfranchise in wikipedia and it redirects one to the disenfranchise page, saying either is correct. i’m 48, and i know i have heard disenfranchise used far more that the other.
p.lukasiak
If I was a superdelegate, reading all the MUPpery here, I’d be very reluctant to nominate Obama, because it appears that most of his support is coming from people who are either currently insitutionalized, or will be by November.

Or who went through elaborate contortions to pretend that Obama hadn’t won any “big” states.
Who went on a prolonged screaming tirade in a recent thread because people had the temerity to disagree with him.
What was that you were saying again about being “institutionalized”?
PaulB
Or, getting back to the topic of this thread, who claimed that he was being “disenfranchised”, despite the fact that nobody was telling him not to vote or doing anything to prevent him from doing just that.

Sigh. Let’s review, shall we?
1. pluk spends months summarily dismissing the voices of people in states that don’t meet his constantly-shifting criteria for Importance, and larding his “impartial” analysis with glaringly transparent pro-Clinton spin.
2. When things aren’t going his way, pluk has the temerity to come on here and whine about being “disenfranchised” and how incredibly biased we all are.
3. When he is met with a less than sympathetic response, pluk (displaying a truly stunning lack of self-awareness) dismisses Obama supporters as institution-bound crazies, less than 24 hours after having a full-on, foot-stamping, spittle-flecked, profanity-laced ALL CAPS hissy fit.
Yes, I’m sure SDs would be very impressed with your work here.

Damn Obama for winning so much that Hillary can say that he is disenfranchising voters in the last states. What a nefarious plan he has; get in and win in as many states as he can so the later state primaries are too little, too late.
Interesting way to spin your opponent winning, I have to give them that. Hillary and her gang are redefining all kinds of stuff this year; when your opponent is winning, it really means that he is losing and you are winning. The logic is inescapable!
Big states matter, but only if Hillary wins them, otherwise they are no better than the little states. Texas is a win, except that she lost. Caucuses don’t matter, but primary votes count. Votes matter, but delegates don’t.
And if she wins the GE, she will go on redefining everything to fit her narrative. Why change?
tBone
Quiet, you. Bloody peasant.

Well, about a year ago the Burger King two blocks from me closed, so I guess I was disfranchised.

Tim – no, because Grammar Nazis are supported to have the facts to reinforce their dudgeon. John is wrong. If you Google “disinfranchise”, the very first thing you see is Google politely asking you whether you actually mean “disenfranchise”. The former has ~2440 hits and no definition provided; the latter, 331,000 hits and a definition provided.
Note, however, that the Dictionary Google links to is Answers, com, and they immediately ask if you mean “disinfranchisement (politics)”. But, again, Google disdains “disinfranchisement” in favor of “disenfranchisement” by a 250:1 ratio.

Maybe I’m in a time warp but I’ve NEVER heard of “disfranchisement”. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not a word. It’s always been “disenfranchisement”.
And what the hell is “sneaked” and “dived”. Again, unless the illiterate are now the language police, the past tense for such strong verbs remains “snuck” and “dove”.
However, there is this insidious tendency to turn ALL verbs into weak verbs, in the past tense (just add “-ed”).
Perhaps I am just old.

Except that John didn’t refer to “disinfranchise”. He referred to “disfranchise”. And if you Google that, it has nearly 100,000 hits, the first of which has a definition provided.

My guess? Michigan and Florida are going to have their delegations seated as is. At this point, running the math, I don’t think it’s going to make a difference. The Michigan proposal was insidious. It was going to be paid for by Clinton cronies and it was going to eliminate Dems who’d voted in the Republican primary in January. Therefore, Edwards and Obama supporters who crossed over because they couldn’t vote for their candidates in a primary that all candidates and the DNC had said wouldn’t count would then not be allowed to vote for their candidate in a primary that did count. Based on the fact that they voted for someone in a primary in another party that only counted for half. And Clinton supporters would get to vote twice, in January, and then again.

neither obama nor clinton can win at this point — unless we are playing by Obama rules, where winning doesn’t mean ‘getting 2025 pledged delegates from the primary/caucus process’ but only means — ‘we win because we say so.’
There is a finish line. Its 2025 delegates. And until you get to that number, there is no winner. period.
SO go off and have your little hissy fit, but remember, Obama hasn’t won. Neither has Hillary.
Indeed, it would probably help you to return to the rational universe if you were to keep repeating “Obama hasn’t won” over and over again until you believe it — because once you do believe it, its a sign you are on your way back from MUPville.
p.lukasiak
yup. had that strategy worked, she would have done what McCain did when Huckabee refused to concede… not pitch a hissy fit, demanding that the party elders coronate him becuase he was ahead, but continuing to rack up delegates until he reached the magic number.
See, Hillary would never have said to Obama “stop running, you’re hurting the party” if she was confident that the nomination was hers. So either Obama isn’t as confident as he seems, or he’s just being a spoiled brat.

Then again, you may live someplace where the 15th century is considered modern.

And we all know now how they went on to win it all for a period of time in the first half against WVU. IN P’s rational world they are the champs! Congrats UofA and congrats P and congrats Hillary and hell congrats to the Patriots cause in the rational world when you are losing you win.
