Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Everybody saw this coming.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

I really should read my own blog.

This really is a full service blog.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Consistently wrong since 2002

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

In my day, never was longer.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

This post is in: Don't Mourn, Organize, Gun nuts, Open Threads, Seriously

Like most, I’ve been stunned and shocked over the last few days.

The pattern is tragically clear. In the wake of the latest mass shooting, we have a conversation about mental illness (mostly, in ways to avoid talking about guns). Yes, there are always some who dare to suggest that it might be time to talk about new gun laws, but that conversation is quickly shut down out of political fear of the gun lobby–especially fear of the NRA.

What we do not do–ever–is talk about all the political organizations on the Right–like the NRA–that fuel paranoid delusion and the manufactured outrage 24/7 as their core reason for existence.  And yes, I said “Right” as I can not think of a single organization of the “Left” that uses delusion, lies and endless attacks on reality as their prime organizing tool and I can hardly think of an organization on the “Right” that doesn’t. This isn’t a both-side-do-it moment. Conservative thought in America is broken. They sell crazy talk, anger and fear. They have created a space where every paranoid sense of persecution is justified–and even honorable. They sell the idea that any extreme action taken in response to these political delusions is a virtue.

The relentless wingnut attack on reality–where every conspiracy theory is valid and all anger about your pet delusion is justified–is not harmless. Lives are damaged, blood is drawn and people die. It is a feature, not a bug of a War on Reality. From the NRA to Americans for Tax Reform to the Koch Brothers to the Heritage Foundation to Fox News to the Birthers to well, any of them, the modern conservative movement has mainstreamed paranoid fantasies and the manufactured anger required to support them. I am not at all surprised that media and cultural acceptance that the endless stream of political-based paranoid delusions should be treated as justifiable reason for rage and extreme actions would inspires some random nut case to act on his private iteration of rage and crazy.

Since Friday, the NRA has not posted anything on Twitter and their Facebook page has been taken down. They are re-grouping to figure out the best way to repackage their money-making paranoid conspiracy theories about the Second Amendment in light of this latest spasm of mass murder by a gun nut. Just before they went dark, the NRA celebrated that they had 1.7 million followers on Twitter. Overall, the NRA has about 4.3 million members. This is where their power comes from. Most of those members are simply folks who own guns as tools for sport or hunting and care about gun safety. OTOH, some–including all the NRA Leadership–are conservative wingnuts who worry about Black Helicopters and an endless stream of paranoid fantasies. Those sane members of the NRA need to take control away from the crazy wingnuts or split to form a new group focused on gun safety and sensible gun laws.

And there needs to be a counterweight to the NRA if this Nation is ever going to be able to talk about guns, gun violence and the paranoid delusions that fuel mass murder. The closest thing we have now is the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.  I think if their membership and donation base can grow, it will put real preassure on the NRA. It will put real preasure on our political leaders to deal with gun violence.

You can take action to support the Brady Campaign here.

You can make a donation to the Brady Campaign here. That is what I did this morning. In fact, I decided to make my support monthly. You can too. And you can support them on Twitter and on Facebook.

The best action that you can take if you’re disgusted by the endless waves of gun violence is to organize. The Brady Campaign has been fighting this fight for decades. With resources and support they will be able to do more. When politicians fear the Brady Campaign more than they fear the NRA then our gun laws will change. And when the paranoid wingnuts running the NRA are driven out, Reality will win another victory over the so-call Conservative movement.

If we organize, we will win. As The Doors said:

The old get old, and the young get stronger.
May take a week, and it may take longer.
They got the guns, but we got the numbers.
Gonna win yeah, we’re taking over.
Come on!

Yeah!

Cheers

Eric Cantor holds up VAWA to protect rapists from Tribal prosecution

This post is in: Open Threads, The War On Women, Women's Rights Are Human Rights, Assholes

As some may know, there are a number of other things that will expire at the end of the year besides items related to the very, very, very gradual incline of fiscal doom that is obsessing so many beltway potentates.

One of these is the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This landmark legislation will expire at the end of the year unless the House acts. The Senate strengthen the law to extend protections to undocumented immigrants, members of the LGBT community and Native Americans. Eric Cantor and the GOP might let the first two groups slide by, but he has a problem with the injuns.

Eric Cantor holds up VAWA to protect rapists from Tribal prosecutionPost + Comments (113)

Laws concerning Tribal Sovereignty create some grey legal zones when crimes are committed on Native American lands–especially when those are violent crimes committed by outsiders. There is an epidemic of rapes of Native American women (many, many of them by white men). And way, way too often, these despicable pieces of shit use the grey area of Tribal jurisdiction as a loop hole to avoid any prosecution for their crimes. The re-authorization of VAWA corrects this problems by giving Tribal Courts expanded authority to prosecute these violent crimes–even if the accused is a white predator just visiting Tribal lands. Eric Cantor, the House GOP Leadership and the modern conservative movement seem to have a problem with Tribal Courts prosecuting non-Native men for the crimes they commit (like raping Native American women) and so they are blocking a vote on the VAWA:

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the author of the Senate VAWA bill, went to the Senate floor on Thursday and plainly announced that House Republican leaders are blocking his bill “because of their objections to [the] … tribal provision.”

Leahy explained the provision, probably the least understood of the three additions in the Senate bill: It gives tribal courts limited jurisdiction to oversee domestic violence offenses committed against Native American women by non-Native American men on tribal lands. Currently, federal and state law enforcement have jurisdiction over domestic violence on tribal lands, but in many cases, they are hours away and lack the resources to respond to those cases. Tribal courts, meanwhile, are on site and familiar with tribal laws, but lack the jurisdiction to address domestic violence on tribal lands when it is carried out by a non-Native American individual. That means non-Native American men who abuse Native American women on tribal lands are essentially “immune from the law, and they know it,” Leahy said. [snip]

Of the Native American women who are raped, 86 percent of them are raped by non-Native men, according to an Amnesty International report. That statistic is precisely what the Senate’s tribal provision targets. [snip]

Cantor’s insistence on keeping the tribal jurisdictional provision out of VAWA has infuriated some backers of the Senate bill and elicited vows to prevent any VAWA bill from advancing that doesn’t protect all victims of abuse. Terry O’Neill, the president of the National Organization for Women and someone who regularly talks to people directly involved in VAWA negotiations, called Cantor’s stance “completely outrageous.”

“Who is Eric Cantor to say that it’s okay for some women to get beaten and raped?” O’Neill said. “If they happen to be Native women who are attacked by a non-Native man, as far as Eric Cantor is concerned, those women are tossed.”

As always, Cantor operates with twisted logic. He seems to think that it is better to protect rapists from prosecution than it is to let Native American Tribal Courts prosecute crimes committed on their Territory. Protection of white men from Tribal Court–regardless of their crimes–seems to be the the driver here. Cantor’s concern seems to be that it is rape today, but that this slippy slope of justice could lead to Tribal Courts prosecuting white men (or even corporations) for other crimes like land theft and environmental destruction tomorrow. Rapists must go free to protect profits. It fills me with a bit of rage.

Good thing that the entire Conservative “War on Women” thing doesn’t exist…

Cheers

Oh, this site, will give you tools to contact Congress to support passage of the VAWA–with the protections for ALL women, including undocumented immigrants, members of the LGBT community and Native Americans.

This post is in: Fables Of The Reconstruction, Open Threads, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?, Good News For Conservatives

The Susan Rice hysteria of the nutters has reached the point where even the Washington Post Editorial page is calling it out:

The oddity of the Republican response to what happened in Benghazi is partly this focus on half-baked conspiracy theories rather than on the real evidence of failures by the State Department, Pentagon and CIA in protecting the Benghazi mission. What’s even stranger is the singling out of Ms. Rice, a Rhodes scholar and seasoned policymaker who, whatever her failings, is no one’s fool.

Could it be, as members of the Congressional Black Caucus are charging, that the signatories of the letter are targeting Ms. Rice because she is an African American woman? The signatories deny that, and we can’t know their hearts. What we do know is that more than 80 of the signatories are white males, and nearly half are from states of the former Confederacy. You’d think that before launching their broadside, members of Congress would have taken care not to propagate any falsehoods of their own.

Somehow all of this is good news for John McCain.

So how about another open thread.

Also, too: football.

Cheers

Be Thankful, eat, rest (and get ready for more crazy)

This post is in: Open Threads, The War On Women, Good News For Conservatives, Wingnut Event Horizon

I am still enjoying the great sense of relief I feel every time I’m reminded that President Obama has been re-elected. As Joe would say, it is a BFD. That relief has been enhanced by rain of wingnut tears as they realized how much of a beating they took in the 2012 election. I’m very thankful for all of that.

And yet, I also know that it is far from over. The wingnuts can and will continue to do damage to the world, the Nation and people from all walks of life. They are at war with reality. Get ready for more crazy. The Wingularity is a long way off.

You could dip a teaspoon into the news stream and come up with dozens of fresh examples everyday. I came across this one this morning:

Republican lawmakers in Michigan, a state which eliminated tax credits for children last year, have proposed a tax credit for unborn foetuses of 12 weeks gestation

So, when the nutters took control of Michigan, one of their first actions was to take away tax credits for families with children (those moochers needed to be punished). Now they want to give tax credits to zygotes and the unborn. Typical. Their fantasies must be feed and they get extra satisfaction if they can flip the bird to reality while they do it. Extreme, crazy and dangerous, they are doing wonders for the Republican brand. I’m thankful for that even as I know the fight will go on for years.

Now I’m off to get the bird out of the brine and into the oven.

How about an open thread.

Cheers

This post is in: Election 2014, Lindsey Graham's Fee Fees, Open Threads, Assholes, DC Press Corpse, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?, Good News For Conservatives

Poor Lindsey Graham. In less than eighteen months he’ll be defeated in South Carolina’s 2014 GOP primary. He is the number one target of the Club for Growth. He is talking tough about the UN Ambassador and yelling “Benghaz!” over and over again as if it is a magic word that will save him from doom. It won’t help. Count Chocola wants his blood.

And this–more than anything else–explains every action Lindsey will take in the coming days, weeks and months.

And it helps to explain John McCain’s bitter panic as well. Lindsey will be his last sycophant standing when the 113th Congress comes to town. Lindsey will be the last Senator left who will automatically treat everything McCain does as “awesome”. McCain will do what he can to save his fanboy, but it will not matter. Even if they both went full Ni-CLANG on President Obama 24/7 (and they’re both almost there), they will not be able to save poor old Lindsey from the wrath of the wingnuts.

Any journalist who treats either of these doddering old fools as relevant will prove themselves to be hacks. As there are so many hacks in the media, we can expect a lot of fluffing and tire swinging as McCain and his sidekick sink into oblivion. This is known.

Cheers

“Nobody died in Iran-Contra”

by Dennis G.|  November 15, 20122:36 pm| 45 Comments

This post is in: War, Assholes, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?, Mainstream Media's McCain Mancrush

<a href=”http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8186301309/” title=”Iran-Contra-begins by dengre.bj, on Flickr”><img src=”http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8206/8186301309_39c3140df1.jpg” width=”485″ height=”500″ alt=”Iran-Contra-begins”></a>

That quote in the headline is something that John McCain actually said this week. Really.

We all know that McCain is a bitter, angry old man and perhaps the sorest loser in the history of American politics, but that does not obscure the fact that at his center he is an ignorant, lying asshole.

At least 30,000 folks died as a result a direct result of the Contras and their war in Nicaragua. The Iran-Contra funded covert project spilled over into El Salvador where another 75,000 people lost their lives and to Guatemala where CIA funded death squads helped helped to push the body count to over 200,000. The Iraq-Iran war that Team Reagan was funding with the scandal added another 450,000 to the count. And then there was the death of the guy who disclosed Reagan’s partnership with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards.

I think it would be fair to add the death tolls from some of the other covert wars or the Reagan era as well. Angola is a good example of one them. To help prop up Apartheid South Africa, Reagan funded a civil war there where over 500,000 people were killed (and where hidden US funded land mines are still killing people every day).

Then there are the legacy/blowback body counts of the Iran-Contra scandal. It allowed Iran to promote the rise of Hezbollah in Lebanon: which led to the bombing of a US Marine barracks in 1983 and other acts of terror throughout the 1980s that the Reagan Administration responded to with gross negligence and weakness.  Then there was the covert funding of Afghan rebels which led to the creation of al-Qaeda, the attacks on 9-11, the decade of the Bush Wars and the attack on Benghazi that John McCain is pretending to care about.

I can’t think of any American politician who disgusts me more than John McCain (including Tom DeLay).

Let me fix his quote for him: “Nobody who was white that I need to pretend to care about died in Iran-Contra.”

Cheers
