Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

When we show up, we win.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Everybody saw this coming.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Proud Halloween Parent Thread

I did hear from Bookdragon, so we’re in the process of getting her cookbook to her. And the proud mama couldn’t help but brag on her son’s Halloween costume: Boy Scout of the Living Dead. “Not that many 12 yr olds could do this themselves with latex, fake blood and their older sister’s makeup kit,” she wrote before giving me proactive :-) permission to post.

So here it is! It’s suitably, err, effective, so I’m putting it below the fold. (Horror susceptibles – you’ve been warned!)

If any other proud parents (of kids of any species!) wants to brag on their kids’ costume, post the link in the comments, and…

….open thread.

Happy Almost-Halloween, Juicers!

I present, in all his dark majesty, the Vegan Black Metal Chef:

I love this guy! And I love his cookbook because he explains exactly what to do AND what not to do AND why. It’s a great cookbook for anyone, but especially newbie cooks.

Like any good seitanist, the VBMC craves the harvest of innocent souls. And so he’s gifting a cookbook to one lucky Juicer. Simply leave a comment and I’ll use a random number generator to select the lucky sacrif—winner.

Only comment once or you’ll be disqualified. OT posters will be damned to ride the It’s a Small World boat for eternity. If you win, I’ll notify you at the email address attached to your comment name.

Edit: You can comment any time through till midnight tonight (Eastern time).

Meanwhile, in North Dakota…

While the seven armed occupiers go scot free in Oregon, peaceful demonstrators seeking to preserve clean water and their tribal rights against encroachment by the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) are being arrested by the hundreds by militarized police in North Dakota.

dapl-police

Attack dogs, pepper spray, water cannons, tanks, LRADs—no defense is too excessive when it comes to oil companies’ inalienable right to despoil and plunder.

Who needs drinking water, anyway?

Energy Transfer Partners claims DAPL is safe as safe can be—which is why it’s so perplexing that Bismarck, ND nuked the original plan for it to pass within ten miles of their city.

Irony, thy name is Bismarck:

This route was rejected in the Corps’ environmental assessment due to its close proximity to source water protection areas, multiple conservation easements and residential areas — the North Dakota Public Service Commission has a 500-foot residential buffer requirement. [bolding mine – HR]

No problem! said ETP. We’ve got some indigenous peoples here we don’t mind further disenfranchising.

Please spread the word – this conflict, and the excesses of the corporate-owned (figuratively and literally) police forces haven’t gotten nearly enough play.

More Things in Heaven and Earth

This post is in: Authors In Our Midst

So the most shocking news of the year may turn out (for me, at least) to have nothing to do with the election. It’s that Christopher Marlowe has been officially credited as coauthor of some of Shakespeare’s plays:

Shakespeare may have had a little more help than previously suspected.

The New Oxford Shakespeare edition of the playwright’s works — which will be published by Oxford University Press online ahead of a worldwide print release — lists Christopher Marlowe as Shakespeare’s co-author on the three “Henry VI” plays, parts 1, 2 and 3.

It’s the first time that a major edition of Shakespeare’s works has listed Shakespeare’s colleague and rival as a co-author on these works, the volume’s general editor, Gary Taylor, said in a phone interview.

There’s been literally centuries of dispute on this, with the Shakespeareans accusing the Marlovians of all kinds of bad faith. But it was Big Data that validated Marlow’s authorship:

For the New Oxford Shakespeare scholars ran tests to determine whether authors like Marlowe could be reliably identified by the ways they used language — like frequent use of certain articles, and certain words commonly occurring in a row, or being close to each other in the text. Once this was determined, researchers applied these patterns back to texts, to see if they suggested an author other than Shakespeare. If results came out positive, further tests were run.

Mr. Taylor said that the exact nature of the playwrights’ collaboration cannot be certain, but that they did not necessarily work together in person. Scriptwriting at Shakespeare’s time was often structured similarly to how movie writing happens now: One author would earn an advance for writing a plot outline, and theaters would hire other authors to write other scenes, according to their strengths.

It’s possible that this is how the “Henry” plays were written, Mr. Taylor said, noting that some playwrights also collaborated by hashing through ideas in pubs.

Personally, I find the Big Data angle a bit creepy. I’m happy Marlowe is finally getting his due, and am all for the use of scientific techniques in the humanities. But if Shakespeare’s not “safe,” no one is. What other time-travel toppling of literary and historical edifices awaits us?

PS – someone at Wikipedia needs to get cracking:

The Shakespeare authorship question is the argument that someone other than William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon wrote the works attributed to him….Although the idea has attracted much public interest, all but a few Shakespeare scholars and literary historians consider it a fringe belief and for the most part acknowledge it only to rebut or disparage the claims.

Also, PPS – for those who are interested, a reminder. I know some Juicers are planning to participate in NaNoWriMo or AcWriMo, so here’s my resource center for those. Also my SavvyAuthors online class starts Monday (10/31) and will provide great support for all writers in November, and there’s a $5 discount for Juicers. (Happy to answer questions on any of these; email me.)

Puffball Envy

Check out the puffball on this guy!

14691075_10157560020995640_6338255742817524147_n

I’m feeling, I don’t know, kinda inadequate.

Also found in Michigan, btw. (As I mentioned, we’ve had a megaton of rain.) And the comment thread is filled with people showing off their puffballs. The clever ones have kids holding them up (their tiny bods increasing the apparent size of the ball), but there are also puffballs measured against beer cans and dogs.

Also, puffs wearing hats, and one (that I saw) Puffball-O-Lantern.

So we—and when I’m talking about cooking, you should always assume the royal we—cut up the puffball into slices and fried them. Then we crumbled it up, ate some, and froze the rest. It has a simple, okay flavor–not fantastic, but not bad–and is kind of the texture of a very light crumbly cheese. We’ll probably use it in soups and as a side dish and some other stuff.

Open thread to talk about puffballs, the election, or anything else.

Writing Productivity Class and Meet Ups (NY & NJ) Comin’ Atcha!

by Hillary Rettig|  October 18, 201611:38 am| 27 Comments

This post is in: Artists In Our Midst, Authors In Our Midst

Hey Everyone – I’m going to bigfoot myself to announce that I’m teaching an online writing-productivity class starting 10/31. It’s great for any writer (creative, academic, business, etc.) trying to boost his or her output, overcome procrastination and perfectionism, and/or finish a project. (Actually for anyone with those goals, in any crazed-turquoise-bowl-6afield, but the examples and discussions will all be writing-focused.) The classes are four weeks long, and the format is bloggish, so you can be located anywhere. Normally $50, but the host, SavvyAuthors, is offering a discount of $5 just for Juicers—so $45. Click here to register. (Note: the class dates are wrong on that link but rest assured you will be registering for my class.)

More info below the fold. Another perk, btw, is that we typically get many romance writers in the class, and they are interesting people who tend to occupy the sweet spot at the intersection of “kind and supportive” and “publication focused.” (Oh, and in case you’re interested, here’s a piece I did a few years back on romance fiction and social justice.)

In other news, JT and I are hitting the road again and I’d love to meet up with any Juicers in either New York City (Nov 21 – 23) or Montclair, NJ (Nov 25-26). (Pre- and post-Thanksgiving.) Please email me at [email protected]. (Also email me if questions about the class.)

Per Wikipedia: “Kintsugi (“golden joinery”), also known as Kintsukuroi (“golden repair”), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum… As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.” Hillary’s note: in other words, Kinsugi exemplifies the virtues of nonperfectionism, one of the main topics we’ll discuss in class.
