Let’s face it: the vast majority of Americans are wanna-be elitists, and they see no problem with the cops sticking it to some minority as long as they perceive that they won’t be hassled. From a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll:

In addition, about 69 percent of Americans said they wouldn’t mind if police officers stopped them to ask for proof of their citizenship or legal rights to be in the country; about 29 percent would mind, considering it a violation of their rights; and about 3 percent were unsure.

That poll is not an outlier. A Pew poll released yesterday found that 67% of people think it’s fine if police detain people who can’t prove they’re in the country legally (that includes 55% of Democrats).

We like to laugh at the mentality of Medicare-receiving teabaggers carrying signs decrying “socialism”, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. These polls show that two-thirds of Americans have the same “I’m so fucking special” attitude: “Nobody could possibly put me in jail for forgetting my driver’s license when I’m out on an evening stroll. That’s for the dirty brown people who live on the other side of town.”

A Modest Proposal

The Obama Administration’s plan to split the Minerals Management Service into two agencies — one to manage leases and one to regulate safety — is good as far as it goes. If they’re really serious, they’ll put the National Transportation Safety Board, or a similar new agency, in charge of investigating rig accidents and spills.

The NTSB already investigates pipeline accidents, so they have some expertise in a related technology. They have an established culture of independence, fairness and thoroughness. And the FAA/NTSB model of regulator/investigator is a proven one that could work for the MMS.

There are a couple “investigations” of the current spill mentioned in the press. I’ll bet they don’t approach the thoroughness and professionalism of an NTSB inquiry, which can run for dozens of pages, even for nonfatal incidents.

Some Democratic operative emailed me this USA Today piece, Tax Bills in 2009 at lowest level since 1950:

Federal, state and local taxes — including income, property, sales and other taxes — consumed 9.2% of all personal income in 2009, the lowest rate since 1950, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports. That rate is far below the historic average of 12% for the last half-century. The overall tax burden hit bottom in December at 8.8.% of income before rising slightly in the first three months of 2010.

“The idea that taxes are high right now is pretty much nuts,” says Michael Ettlinger, head of economic policy at the liberal Center for American Progress.

Also, too, USA Today says that the average income in the USA is $102,000. I think they mean “average income for a married-couple family“. Even so, I remember when $100K/year was big money.

Malicious Compliance

Texas has a new policy about what food schools can serve in their cafeterias. Based on that policy, an elementary school there gave a third-grader a week of detention for possessing a Jolly Rancher candy. Here’s the superintendent’s take:

“Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules,” he said.

Of course, the rules said that parents could send whatever shitty food they desired to school with their kids — the school just couldn’t sell it to them. This idiot clearly doesn’t agree with the guidelines, so he decided to make a 10 year-old girl miserable to prove his point.

I learned the term “malicious compliance” from a friend who worked in a Fortune 500 company. Mid-level managers who are butthurt over some new policy will often apply it in the most obtuse manner imaginable, with the aim of undermining the goals of company leadership. In the business world, malicious compliance gets managers fired. In the world of education and government, it gets you a Reason piece about creeping government intervention.
