Rushenfreude

Just for kicks, I listened to a few minutes of El Rushbo yesterday. His first call after a long tirade about how “no legislation is permanent in DC” was from a serious young dittohead who asked how, exactly, repeal was going to work if Obama still has a veto and Republicans don’t have a veto-proof majority. I really don’t think the guy was trolling: he was expecting Rush to have an answer.

Rush blathered on for a few minutes on that one, saying that a real revolution could occur and get veto-proof Republican majorities in the House and Senate. But even he seemed to admit that was magical thinking. Of course, left unsaid was the fact that getting a veto-proof majority in the Senate is impossible, and entitlements like Social Security and Medicare have not been, and will never be, repealed.

I really think that it’s hard to understate how stupid and ineffective the “repeal the bill” strategy will be as an election message. I still think Democrats are going to lose some seats this Fall, but jobs and the economy will do the work, not the horseshit that the de-facto leader of the GOP is trotting out.

Both DougJ and I have been posting on the brick throwing in Rochester, where Congresswoman Louise Slaughter’s office and the local Democratic headquarters had windows broken. Here’s the note that was attached to the brick that went through the Democrats’ window.

Now local TV station 13-WHAM reports that Slaughter received a death threat: “Assassinate is the word they used…toward the children of lawmakers who voted yes.”

The morans who threw the brick are responding to posts on a teabagger blog called “Sipsey Street Irregulars”. The guy who runs the blog is on Social Security disability, of course, and he’s really a peacemaker:

Now I did not call for the vandalization of the windows of congresscritters, only local Demoncrat party HQs. But I can certainly understand why someone would.

I am trying to prevent civil war and communal killing, not start it, by warning those who do not understand the unintended consequences of THEIR actions.

A Simple Message

Think about some common parental fears:

  1. My child will be gay and/or want to marry someone of a different race.
  2. My child will get pregnant, or make someone pregnant, and an abortion will be needed.
  3. My child will have a childhood illness like Juvenile Diabetes or Epilepsy, or have a traumatic injury, that they will carry into their adult life.

Of these three fears, voting for a world where (1) and (2) are no big deal can be easily rationalized away:

  1. I will raise my child the right way and they won’t be gay, or marry someone from a different race. So, I’m free to vote for racist homophobes because this issue doesn’t affect me.
  2. If a pregnancy does happen, I know there will never be enough votes to overturn the right to an abortion, and I know I’ll always have enough money to buy one, so my pro-life vote doesn’t matter.

But it’s pretty hard to wish away (3). You can’t control whether your child is going to fall from a swingset and hit his head, or be run over by a car, or have a pancreas that doesn’t work right. If health insurance is denied for people with pre-existing conditions, anyone’s child runs the risk of losing healthcare, long after the parent has passed from the scene.

The minute Obama signs the bill, the Democrats can say that health insurance cannot be denied for a pre-existing condition, and that they had to fight every single Republican for this right. That message is simple, it hits people where they live, and it addresses a universal concern.

The commercials cutting from a kid with diabetes to John Boehner yelling “Hell No You Can’t” are probably already being made. They will be the Willie Horton ads of the 2010 election.

The DC press corps’ candle in the wind, Mark Halperin, bows in the direction of perceived power :

The President, however, may be indifferent to the acrid fussing of his Republican foes. He will be able to bask once again in the glow of positive press coverage (accented by a momentous signing ceremony), which will focus on four areas helpful to the Democrats’ prospects in November: the masterful display of White House patience and competence that got the job done; the elements of the legislation that are in fact consistently popular with large numbers of Americans, such as its insurance company crackdowns; the return of the meme that Republicans are the party of “no”; and the accompanying rising poll numbers for the administration and the new law.

This is a guy who turned in columns titled Obama is Making the Same Mistakes as Bush and Can Obama Fend Off Failure Attacks in the last few weeks, not to mention What Obama Can Learn from Reagan.

One’s On the Way

If you’re a House junkie, which I must admit shamefully that I am, seeing your favorite drama queens on the House floor, and watching them all jockey for a few more minutes on the Tee Vee outside the chamber, is part of the fun of today’s proceedings.

Though there’s a lot of competition for this title, I’d say that the biggest prima donna in the House is Loretta Sanchez, who represents the D+4 district CA-47. Loretta was always a pretty safe “Yes” vote, but she stirred up some excitement today when it appeared for a short moment that she might hang out at a Florida fundraiser instead of coming back to DC to vote.

Of course that was bullshit. Would someone who sends out Christmas cards like these miss the most important vote she’ll ever take?

(By the way, trivia fans, Loretta’s the only House member in history to serve with her sister, the more progressive and less dramatic Linda (CA-39).)
