Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Let there be snark.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Republicans in disarray!

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Infrastructure week. at last.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

We still have time to mess this up!

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

This blog will pay for itself.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Not all heroes wear capes.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Vote Like Your Life Depends On It

Never Stop Fighting Til the Fighting Is Done

Brian Schatz isn’t overconfident and we shouldn’t be, either.

But he’s also not pretending he knows the outcome, because he doesn’t.  Good or bad, no one knows.

No one knows the outcome.  It’s not possible to know the outcome because the outcome will be partially determined by people who haven’t even voted yet.  And by the people who don’t vote.

Our job is to get people out to vote – and not just the people who always vote – let’s try to get some folks who haven’t been paying attention.

Change your plans for today and do something to help.

Please think about volunteering somewhere today.  Just do it.

I don’t know if we are going to win or lose and I’m nervous as hell like the rest of you but understand that tactically speaking they want you to be despondent and not volunteer. So, be nervous, but don’t be frozen. Find a campaign, and help. Thanks. https://t.co/Ip3tDtu8an

— Brian Schatz (@brianschatz) November 4, 2022

Every time someone predicts gloom, other people get discouraged.  Maybe they don’t vote.  Or maybe they don’t volunteer.  Or maybe they pass on the gloom, and even more people get discouraged, become despondent.  Those people don’t vote and they don’t volunteer.

Look at the ideas in the post from yesterday.  Go to Pod Save America and pick up one of their opportunities.  Just do something to make a difference, please.

We have just 3 more days.  We only get one shot at this.  Just do something to help.

NEVER STOP FIGHTING TILL THE FIGHTING IS DONE https://t.co/ZIU7bnHhWp

Late Night Open Thread: I’m Hoping Hakeem Jeffries Is Our Next Majority Leader

Since Rep. Jeffries is considered Not A Fan of Performative Outrage, I checked his twitter feed. He’s also too busy doing his job to waste time on time-wasters, I guess…

Senate Republicans stole two Supreme Court seats from Democratic Presidents.

Then express fake outrage when the legitimacy of the Court’s extreme majority is questioned.

Get lost.

— Hakeem Jeffries (@RepJeffries) July 25, 2022

I’ve got my hopes for the future, though! (I am as big a Pelosi fangrrl as any, but when she’s ready to go, the lady deserves a long and happy retirement)

After Pelosi retires she’s going to be replaced with Hakeem Jeffries, and once you’re introduced to him you’re really going to miss Pelosi’s diplomacy and gentle touch when dealing with internal party divisions.

I truly believe that many don’t understand just how often Speaker Pelosi has willingly, and even cheerfully, taken the hits from both the left *and* the right to protect her caucus. Not to mention that she fundraises for the DCCC at something like twice the level of any Dem.??

Sensible, upbeat closer:

Opinion by Paul Waldman: Don’t get mad at ‘weak’ Democrats. Instead, get organized.https://t.co/FIBk1zy4j6

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) June 28, 2022

… But now liberals and progressives have to ask themselves: What are we going to do with our anger?

There’s a lot they can do. But the worst response — one that is common in some quarters of the left — is to say that because congressional Democrats are feckless and weak, there’s no point in voting for them.

This is a moment when the left has to look at the success the right just achieved, and learn some lessons from it.

Here’s the first lesson: You know who never stopped voting? Those antiabortion activists who are now celebrating, and planning new legislation to make abortion illegal nationally, to ruthlessly punish any woman (or girl) who tries to get one, and anyone who helps her.

That’s not because they had faith in Republican officeholders. They didn’t. They knew they had to push them and prod them and threaten them. And a lot of the time, those politicians held their movement at arm’s length. Until Donald Trump, a succession of Republican presidents refused to appear in person at the annual March for Life in Washington, because they worried about the optics of seeming too close to the antiabortion cause…

Yet the antiabortion base never stopped voting. These activists and voters knew it was the minimum they had to do — absolutely necessary, but not nearly sufficient…

It’s because of all this that Republicans achieved this extraordinary victory even though they never succeeded in persuading the public to agree with them. While they would certainly like to have most Americans on their side, their strategy was constructed such that it isn’t actually necessary.

Liberals have to learn from this history. When you lose, you have to ask why and how it happened. And if you’re angry at weak Democrats, figure out how to make them stronger. If a Democrat says, “Give us two more Senate seats and we can pass a bill codifying abortion rights nationally,” they’re not wrong — so make them do it.

To repeat, voting is the absolute minimum liberals have to do, and they absolutely must. Not only that, a huge number of races up and down the ballot bear directly on abortion rights: governors, attorneys general, state representatives, prosecutors, judges, county councils, referendums — almost too many to mention.

So yes, you have to keep voting if you want to restore abortion rights. And if you don’t think Democratic leaders are getting the job done? Just remember, it’s not up to them alone. It’s up to you, too.

Harris’ appearance comes at a time when our freedom is in the balance. Black women have long been an integral part of the backbone of the Democratic Party, & mobilizing the resources of this network will play no small part in confronting the challenges we face in midterms &beyond

— Denise Oliver-Velez ?? (@Deoliver47) July 16, 2022

Grudging pundit credit is still credit:

… Harris has a difficult task before her, trying to organize and satisfy a demanding coalition of elected officials and activists facing steep odds of restoring abortion rights nationwide. And there are questions about whether an administration led by a president she once criticized as behind the times on abortion rights — a Catholic who once described his views on the issue as “middle of the road” — will be willing to go far enough for the mission to succeed.

“Every crisis gives leaders a chance to be known in another context,” said Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat. “And overturning Roe is the crisis of the past half century. Many people will get to know Kamala again through this fight. And I’m glad of that — I think she has a lot to say.”

Harris has a deep history with abortion rights, dating back to her time in California as a prosecutor and the state attorney general. Her focus has intensified since a draft of the opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked in May showing the court’s conservative majority was poised to overturn Roe. In fact, the day before the final court decision was released in June, Harris hosted seven Democratic state attorneys general at the White House to discuss ways they could use their authority to mitigate the impact of such a ruling.

Since late last year, Harris has held more than 10 meetings, calls, or events with different figures in the abortion rights movement, including state lawmakers, attorneys general, activist groups, medical providers, faith leaders, and privacy experts. Her staff has been included in most White House meetings on the issue. She’s taken the administration’s message to four states already, with significantly more travel expected. People who have attended those meetings said Harris has done a lot of listening and asked others to share what they’re experiencing on the ground, as well as prodding them for ideas about what to do next…

Harris’s staff says she is looking into all avenues to produce results, but that most significant change is going to require voters exerting their power in elections.

“She looks at it as the various levers you can pull,” said Josh Hsu, counsel to the vice president. “The focus on the states is not by accident; it’s where you can get something concrete done in the moment.”…

”I think that people are ready and honestly in need for her to be the leader that we all know that she can be,” said Amanda Brown Lierman, executive director of Supermajority, a progressive women’s advocacy and political organization. “[It’s] a tremendous opportunity for her, but also for women across the country to … give her the backing and the confidence to get this over the finish line.”

In times like this, people often hate hearing “go vote”. But really what we mean by “vote” is “build political power”, and yes, that is still the answer. 1/x

— Tayhlor Coleman (@tayhlorcoleman) June 24, 2022

The district attorney who will decide whether or not to prosecute doctors who provide abortions. The school board member whose oversight of curriculum will shape our children’s worldview and thus our future. The county executive who’ll determine what health funding to prioritize.

The judges who will hear cases brought against women and their doctors. The sheriffs who will investigate the reports against women and their providers. The state legislators who will craft the law now that the decision has been sent back to the states.

The controllers, comptrollers, & treasurers with leeway to decide exactly how soon they’ll reimburse a woman’s health clinic surviving month to month on a shoestring budget. All positions of immense political power. All positions elected with, OR WITHOUT, your vote.

But building political power is about more than voting. We must vote AND show up and hold the leaders we elect accountable. We must vote AND never shut up about the stakes in each election with those in our own concentric circles.

We should be pragmatic about our political reality and remain clear eyed that WE are still our own best shot at building a more equitable and more just country for our children and future generations. Each election is about much more than just us.

The fall of Roe didn’t start today. It started in the midterms many of us sat out. It started in the elections we just couldn’t find the motivation to vote in because the candidates didn’t “inspire” us.

Our opponents found the time and the motivation. And now we see the result.

Many of us look to the struggles of earlier generations and wonder if we would have been brave enough to risk everything they were willing to put on the line for progress. That is impossible to know. But history will judge what we do in this moment.

So yes. Vote and build political power. Vote and build political power. Vote and build political power.

Because if we don’t, they will. /end
