Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

No one could have predicted…

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

This blog will pay for itself.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Rainy and cruddy all day. Just a wasted day.

On the other hand, the newly planted garden needs the rain. One thing that never ceases to amaze me about plants is that even when you do your best to plant them, they sometimes look a little cock-eyed and tilted when you are done, but within 48 hours, they are growing straight as an arrow. I’ve sort of just given up on the aesthetics of the garden for this year, and am just piling tons of hay and grass clippings as needed on the lot.

I’ve also decided that I enjoy this enough that I am going to get some grow lights and put a little grow table in the basement so I can do my own seedlings this winter and really kick it up a notch. I figure the initial outlay will run me a couple hundred bucks, but if I have success with it I will save a ton of money in the long run on plants.

Finally had the garden plowed. Our tiller is broken, so a neighbor did it and it looks like the soil is pretty rich underneath, so I’m excited about that. Had a good dirt color, no sand and clay, and lots of worms. I hope to spend some time getting the big clumps of sod and any roots and rocks out tomorrow, and get everything planted on Friday. That will be an effort because there were two forsythia bushes there and the roots for those are unbelievable.

Since this is the first time this area has been used as a garden, my plan is to plant everything and then either mulch it with grass clippings to keep the weeds down or drop some landscape fabric before planting. I’ll have to think about it. Eventually I want to frame this plot and build it up so that it is a raised plot. Decisions.

BTW- learned quite a bit about Ginny and Guesly while dogsitting the last 48 hours. For one, I learned that EVERYTHING is a crisis. The slightest sound and the dogs go racing outside to ward off any potential intruder. Second, they watch television. Not only do they bark at any animal on tv, but they get confused by things that look at animals. There is one commercial for Bush’s baked beans with a dog wearing sunglasses and a mustache, and they look at it quizzically, because they are not sure what it is. I guess the disguise works.

Finally, Ginny watched Wheel of Fortune. And I’m not kidding. I’m going to video tape it for you all some time. As soon as she hears the “beep beep beep beep” as the words is presented, she runs into the room and sits down in front of the tv. Her head then turns from side to side, and if someone calls out a letter that is not there and the buzzer goes off, she barks like a lunatic. I’m not making this up.

The good news is that Jack Russell terriers are only this energetic for the first ten years or so.

Another content free day from me. Sorry.

We went to the greenhouse, was doing some work work that had to be done by tomorrow, and then cleaning.

Was so happy with my Fiskars Weeder /Dandelion Implement of Destruction that I went ahead and picked up a Fiskars Edger today.

BTW- do you have any idea how hard it is to find a decent wheelbarrow? All the big box stores seem to have an exclusive contract with True-Temper, and their wheelbarrows are crap.

Take it away, Bad Horse’s Filly…

We had snow two days in a row and today was still 20 degrees below normal temps. My tomatoes have been living under black plastic and have their own hot water bottle. So far, so good. Despite that, this weekend looks great for grilling in my neighborhood, so here is something just a bit different to spice up traditional hamburgers. As usual, this is a quick and tasty dinner, don’t want to spend what nice weather I have stuck cooking. I’d probably add chips to the menu – have to balance out those green beans. Also, I’d love to know how your garden is growing this spring and summer and if you’re growing anything unusual.

On the board tonight:

1. Italian Hamburgers
__
2. Crusty Sandwich Rolls
__
3. Green Beans
__
4. 3-Layer Bars

As ever, recipes and shopping list at the link.

__

P.S. from Anne Laurie: First of two shipments of tomato plants arrived in the mail today: Rose de Berne, Oxheart, Pineapple, Black Cherry, Juliet (all of which we’ve grown before and loved); Chocolate Stripes, Black Krim, Carmello, Vintage Wine, and Opalka (which are new to us). Of course, after an unusually warm April & May, our area north of Boston has been under a frost advisory ever since the plants were shipped from Alabama Monday… but at least we haven’t had to worry about snow!

Sorry for the lack of posts, but the others have you all covered nicely. Had some work work to do today, then I had some stuff to do in the yard that was irritating me.

Off my back porch, where I have hung the feeders, is a large white pine that had the bottom six feet of the side facing my house with nothing but dead branches and bramble. The only living thing that might have found that attractive would be turkeys, and the only turkey around these here parts got himself stuck on the roof the other day. So I hacked that all down and hauled it away, cleaned up about ten years of pine needles, repositioned the feeders, and then went and bought a couple trays of pachysandra, which is a nice ground cover, works really well in acidic soil, and is native to the SE United States (although not the kind I bought). I figure I will plant that there and it will serve as attractive cover, and I won’t have to spend the rest of my adult live trying to grow grass under a pine tree. I also transplanted a bunch of wild spearmint to some flower boxes to contain it until I can figure out where I want to put it.

How was your day?

Volunteers Wanted in the Gulf States

by Anne Laurie|  May 3, 20104:37 pm| 42 Comments

The National Wildlife Federation is soliciting donations and volunteers to fight the oil spill through the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana:

… We do not know the location or the extent of impact to birds, wildlife, and habitat at this time. What we do know is that we need to be ready with on-call volunteers in the event that they are needed. National Wildlife Federation, National Audubon Society, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana are building a list of volunteers prepared to help with this response.
__
Volunteers can fill a variety of needs, from oiled wildlife recovery, to monitoring and photographing oil movement, to providing a boat and driver for response activities. No specific training or experience is necessary, although you must be at least 18 years old to volunteer. Some tasks, such as food preparation, may require no training. Other tasks, such as washing oiled birds, may require specific certifications or skills. We encourage pre-veterinary students, veterinary technicians, and anyone with HAZWOPER training to volunteer. Anyone with experience in dealing with wildlife handling, rehabilitation, or hazardous materials clean up is also strongly encouraged to register…
[…] Once you have registered, we will contact you as soon as opportunities arise. The severity of this spill may require a long-term and ongoing response, so if you don’t hear from us immediately, it doesn’t mean you won’t be contacted or that your efforts won’t be needed. With your help, we can meet this challenge and reduce the impacts of this spill to habitat and wildlife.
__
Note: If you encounter oiled wildlife, please call 1 (800) 557-1401. Please do not touch or disturb oiled wildlife, for your safety and theirs.

I have no prior experience with CRCL, but would be most interested in hearing from those who do.

The Silence of the Dandelions

Day two of the anti-dandelion counter-insurgency at the Cole household has ended with me sunburnt, exhausted, and with only half the yard done. I put down 12 bags of mulch and got the second herb planter done, hung some wind chimes, and mowed and de-dandelioned half the yard before the shoulder started to ache. I’ll finish the rest tomorrow. I’ve also decided that I need a compost heap.

Also, still no songbirds, but with me outside raising a stink, cackling while throwing dandelion carcasses all over the place, I can’t say I blame them. Some of you wanted to know what kind of feed I picked up, and i looked at the bag and it was Kaytee Ultimate Songbird. Having run a blog for a decade, I am fully aware that this is when you all are supposed to leave 100 comments about why my choice in birdseed sucks/is bad for birds/hazardous to other animals/bad for the environment/all of the above.

I’ll be back in approximately 1/2 bottle of wine to fight back.
