Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

After roe, women are no longer free.

In my day, never was longer.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Let there be snark.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Stochastic Terrorism: Club Q Mass Shooting

This post is in: Gun Issues, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Open Threads

Another day, another tragic shooting. This time at a club that hosts weekend Drag shows.

No photo description available.

5 dead after shooting at Colorado Springs LGBTQ club late Saturday night

Five people are dead and 18 others are injured following a shooting at a nightclub in Colorado Springs late Saturday night.

One suspect is in police custody and is being treated for injuries at a local hospital.

The shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ club in northeast Colorado Springs, is under investigation, according to Lt. Pamela Castro, a spokeswoman with the Colorado Springs Police Department. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, the agency’s Denver office said on Twitter.

Club Q said it was devastated by the attack and called the incident a hate crime in a Facebook post Sunday morning.

“We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack,” the post read.

No photo description available.

Updates and live coverage here.

The suspect has been identified and is hospitalized after being subdued by heroic clubgoers.

NBCNews: “At least two heroic people inside the club confronted and fought with the suspect and were able to stop the suspect from continuing to kill and harm others,” Colorado Springs police say

Suspect  identified as 22 year old Anderson Lee Aldridge.

I’m sure we’ll learn he was mentally ill and it had nothing to do with guns or the right spewing hatred toward the LGBTQ community.

I’m angry.

Wednesday Evening Open Thread: The Respect for Marriage Act Moves Forward

by Anne Laurie|  November 16, 20228:30 pm| 46 Comments

This post is in: Civil Rights, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Racial Justice

Love is love and Americans should have the right to marry the person they love. Today’s bipartisan Senate vote gets us closer to protecting that right.

The Respect for Marriage Act protects all couples under law – I urge Congress to send the bill to my desk so I can make it law.

— President Biden (@POTUS) November 16, 2022

The right to marry who you love is a fundamental freedom. Today, I joined Republicans and Democrats in the Senate to advance the Respect for Marriage Act to protect that freedom. Tomorrow, we’ll vote to make it law.

— Senator Mark Kelly (@SenMarkKelly) November 16, 2022

As many people are pointing out, the bill is less than perfect — it doesn’t deny individual states the right to ban future same-sex or interracial marriages, just prevents those states from denying ‘marital benefits’ (employment-related services, dependent child adoption, health care, death benefits) to individuals already married. But it’s a step forward, and IMO an important one. I would probably injure myself in glee if the Equal Right Amendment were added to the Constitution, but I’m not gonna refuse (especially on other peoples’ behalf) all the improvements in gender-related civil liberties that have accrued to us since 1973…

Statement from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says Church doctrine on marriage "will remain unchanged" but bill is "the way forward" to respect religious freedom while "preserving the rights of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters" (2/2)

— Josh Lederman (@JoshNBCNews) November 15, 2022

My lightly informed opinion: The global LDS missionary outreach has expanded to the point where it doesn’t want a minority of revanchist bigots to make good Church members uncomfortable about living in Salt Lake City, no matter their skin color or that of their temple-sealed partners. Also, Mormon history is sufficiently honored that the men running the LDS know angry Heartland Americans(tm), once they’ve run out of ‘queers’ and ‘n*****-lovers’ to punish, will turn their (not always metaphorical) guns on ‘filthy sisterwives sex maniacs in funny underwear’ with a quickness.

And then there are the men who are complacently sure that the leopards would never eat *their* faces:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has voted NO to advancing the Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect his own interracial marriage to Elaine Chao under federal law. pic.twitter.com/UleHMxcHdp

— Pop Crave (@PopCrave) November 16, 2022

The Senate has now advanced the Respect for Marriage Act; a bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage from absurd attacks from Clarence Thomas.

37 Republicans voted against this. Another reminder of Republicans extremism.

— Ethan Wolf (@ethanmwolf) November 16, 2022

Today, the Respect for Marriage Act made significant progress in the Senate. This is an important step in the right direction when it comes to securing marriage equality for all.

— Reverend Raphael Warnock (@ReverendWarnock) November 16, 2022

Points to Sinema for voting in favor, but her early tweet makes it pretty damned clear she is not, shall we say, wedded to her present position…

most americans actually do agree on this, people against marriage equality are genuinely a minority who aren’t worth placating, and i am looking forward to you being obliterated in the 2024 primary https://t.co/4e2Q76WRS8

— GOLIKEHELLMACHINE (@golikehellmachi) November 16, 2022

Once Senator Warnock has secured his seat, I hear Monaco is without an American ambassador. Seems like a place where Ms. Sinema would really be able to explore her interests — wine, public wackiness, and sucking up to wealthy choads.

This post is in: Biden Administration in Action, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Open Threads, Proud To Be A Democrat!

We all have our skill sets…

Heading into the midterms, the media misjudged the electorate—and underestimated President Joe Biden.

“Just about everything the media suggested voters didn’t care about, they cared about passionately,” writes @MollyJongFast. https://t.co/kdBTC5Xevc

— VANITY FAIR (@VanityFair) November 14, 2022

Worth the read, and not just for the rare mea culpa:

… Not only did the media misjudge the electorate, they also underestimated President Joe Biden. Look, I’ve been there myself. Almost three years ago, I wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post where I obnoxiously wrote, “Not to get too technical about it, but I would like to postulate that the Democratic front-runner should be, you know, in front.” Biden went on to win South Carolina, Florida, Illinois, and Arizona shortly after my piece ran. In the end, Biden won 2,687 delegates in the Democratic primary, crushing the rest of the field. Biden then went on to beat Trump 306 to 232 in the Electoral College (and by more than 7 million in the popular vote). Biden won critical swing states Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia…

I asked White House chief of staff Ron Klain about this chronic case of underestimating Biden. Klain wrote, “He has been underestimated as a candidate, as a president, and as a party leader—and he has delivered historical results in all three roles. As a candidate, he beat the previously unvanquished Donald Trump; as a president, he delivered critical legislation with the narrowest of margins on Capitol Hill; and now, as party leader, he has achieved a midterm result unmatched since FDR’s time. He does it by laying out what he stands for, fighting hard to get it done, and speaking earnestly from the heart. He has kept together the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party, built an administration that looks like the country, and pursued policies that inspire young voters, middle-aged voters, and older voters. President Biden is underestimated because his triumphs are the triumph of wisdom, decency, and determination: values underappreciated in today’s media and political culture.”…

I don’t regret my fervent early advocacy, but I’ll agree with Senator Warren that President Biden is the man for this moment:

“This electoral success belongs to Mr. Biden, who ignored ivory-tower economists and out-of-touch pundits claiming that bold action to help families was bad politics,” writes @ewarren in a guest essay. https://t.co/C62kDHhVbA

— Hemry, Local Bartender (@BartenderHemry) November 14, 2022

its important to say this election is all the result of five justices in their black robes who were sooooo certain that they could get away with rolling back the rights of American citizens. they thought they were untouchable. they unleashed a miraculous midterm victory

— Reconstructionist (@un_a_valeable) November 13, 2022

And the good work continues:

I need to see the exact language, but if this summary is accurate, the Senate should pass the bill immediately. None of these "concessions" will change its core requirement: That the federal government and all 50 states must recognize same-sex marriages. https://t.co/wvWw6SkXeN

— Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_DC) November 14, 2022

The Senate bill operates exactly like the House version, forcing every state to grant full faith and credit to a marriage that’s valid in the jurisdiction that licensed it, and to respect rights arising from that marriage. I explained all this here: https://t.co/zA9vU9bdbX

…. PopSugar: Besides voting, what can people do if they want to support abortion rights in this moment, and I wonder, on your end, what is the administration doing on this issue?

Kamala Harris: Well, I do want to stress that if we are going to be able to stop . . . so many states from doing what they’re doing, which is passing these abortion bans, passing bans with no exceptions for rape or incest, criminalizing healthcare providers — I mean, criminalizing doctors, nurses, healthcare providers. If we’re going to stop that, we’re going to have to have a national law that says we will protect and defend a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. And the only way that’s going to happen is to have the people in the United States Congress who will support that and have it in the numbers that we need, which is about two more United States senators and holding onto the House. So I have to really stress that.

But also, why do elections matter on this issue? Because in those states that have criminalized healthcare providers, it matters who your county prosecutor is. So take a look at those races. It matters who your governor is, because if you’re in a state where the legislature is maybe trying to pass a ban on reproductive healthcare but your governor is prepared to veto it, right, or if you have a governor who says, “I protect the woman’s right to make decisions about her own body,” that’s going to be important. So there’s that.

The work that can be done also includes supporting providers. But also it includes supporting women. You know, there’s so much about this issue that I think has been designed and meant to make women feel ashamed or embarrassed or make them feel alone. One of the things I can’t stress enough is to remind people they are not alone, they’re not alone. And they’re not being judged. That’s very important. And it’s also really important to use your voice in a way that provides clarity around what a person’s rights are, so that people won’t be alone and confused about where to go for help…

Vice President @KamalaHarris gave an incredibly personal and heartfelt story about her childhood memories of Diwali. I did not capture all of it, but I look forward to her re-telling the story in future Diwalis, maybe even in the Oval Office. ?? pic.twitter.com/EY9IwwllAK

Federalist Goes Fascist

by Betty Cracker|  October 21, 202210:12 am| 188 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Open Threads, Politics

The Federalist, a rightwing media outlet cofounded by the serial-plagiarist spouse of John McCain’s Daughter™️, published a screed yesterday that pushes the “saying the quiet parts out loud” cliché to a new level. Titled “We Need To Stop Calling Ourselves Conservatives,” the content suggests that they should start calling themselves “fascists” instead and rechristen their media outlet The Fascist.

The wind-up to the author’s ardent embrace of fascism is a declaration of defeat for the conservative movement. The author claims there’s nothing left to “conserve” because godless liberals have already transformed America into a “woke dystopia.” He says conservatives and “classical liberals” alike recognize this, so props to the left-of-center “cancel culture” hysterics.*

Admitting defeat in the culture war, the author opines that conservatives must now seize power and use government as a “blunt instrument” to impose their worldview on the rest of us. Small government? No-fault divorce? Public education? Reproductive healthcare? Nope, nope, nope and nope:

The left will only stop when conservatives stop them, which means conservatives will have to discard outdated and irrelevant notions about “small government.” The government will have to become, in the hands of conservatives, an instrument of renewal in American life — and in some cases, a blunt instrument indeed.

To stop Big Tech, for example, will require using antitrust powers to break up the largest Silicon Valley firms. To stop universities from spreading poisonous ideologies will require state legislatures to starve them of public funds. To stop the disintegration of the family might require reversing the travesty of no-fault divorce, combined with generous subsidies for families with small children. Conservatives need not shy away from making these arguments because they betray some cherished libertarian fantasy about free markets and small government. It is time to clear our minds of cant.

In other contexts, wielding government power will mean a dramatic expansion of the criminal code. It will not be enough, for example, to reach an accommodation with the abortion regime, to agree on “reasonable limits” on when unborn human life can be snuffed out with impunity. As Abraham Lincoln once said of slavery, we must become all one thing or all the other. The Dobbs decision was in a sense the end of the beginning of the pro-life cause. Now comes the real fight, in state houses across the country, to outlaw completely the barbaric practice of killing the unborn.

Seemingly using The Handmaid’s Tale as an instruction manual, the author goes full eliminationist on what he chillingly calls “the transgender question,” berating right-wingers who hold live-and-let-live views and proposing that a conservative government arrest parents, doctors and teachers for wrong-think:

On the transgender question, conservatives will have to repudiate utterly the cowardly position of people like David French, in whose malformed worldview Drag Queen Story Hour at a taxpayer-funded library is a “blessing of liberty.” Conservatives need to get comfortable saying in reply to people like French that Drag Queen Story Hour should be outlawed; that parents who take their kids to drag shows should be arrested and charged with child abuse; that doctors who perform so-called “gender-affirming” interventions should be thrown in prison and have their medical licenses revoked; and that teachers who expose their students to sexually explicit material should not just be fired but be criminally prosecuted.

I’d love to dismiss this person as a kook, but my governor (and others!) has already passed a law that’s a precursor to enacting the broadly anti-LGBTQ and specifically anti-trans agenda outlined above. DeSantis used a taxpayer-funded communications shop to smear anyone who opposes him as a “groomer,” a label eagerly taken up by the hard-right nationwide. And he’s likely to be reelected in a few weeks and has a decent chance of becoming the GOP nominee for president in 2024.

I’d also love to dismiss The Federalist as an unprofitable mouthpiece for the lunatic fringe of the hard-right, a bonfire onto which reactionary plutocrats like Dick Uihlein throw stacks of cash. But what was once the hard-right fringe is now the mainstream Republican Party.

What passes for today’s Republican Party’s intelligentsia is sharing their unpopular schemes now because they aren’t concerned the Beltway press will warn their intended victims — all of us — and why should they fear that, after Trump? They’re telling us who they are, and we damn well better believe them.

Open thread.

*The so-called “classical liberals” who ginned up the “cancel culture” hysteria are the invasive cane toads of political discourse. Great job, everyone!
