Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Come on, man.

Let there be snark.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

This really is a full service blog.

Liberals, It’s Time to Stop Bitching and Start Organizing. Just Shut Up and Get to Work.

by Imani Gandy (ABL)|  March 10, 20116:31 pm| 501 Comments

This post is in: Election 2012, Kiss My Black Ass, Clap Louder!

We’re four Senators and one President away from Thunderdome. Still wanna primary Obama?

I’m doing one of those rare things where I repost another blogger’s work in full because I can’t say it any better, and I fear my head would explode were I to try.

I do want to draw attention to one thing in particular, and that is all the PRAISE ED bullshit on MSNBC this week. How dare he pretend like he’s some fucking working class hero when he was leading the FUCK OBAMA movement during the midterms?

I wrote extensively about how the left was shooting itself in the foot, not only by refusing to vote, but also by refusing to participate in any GOTV activities on behalf of Democrats because Democrats needed to be taught a lesson, that’s why!

Yeah, yeah, I’m an Obot. Do you know what being an Obot means? It means being fucking practical. It means not spending days on end looking for any way to attack Democrats and the Democratic leadership. It means not referring to Democrats as “house niggers.” It means not calling Obama a liar when he tries to get something done and is hamstrung by Congress (Gitmo). It means not expecting Obama to speak out for your little pet projects and stomping your foot when he doesn’t. It means stop looking to Obama to tell us what to do. It means stop trying to convince black people that Obama is fucking them over (I’m looking at you, Arianna.) It means stop expecting that your progressive utopia is going to shoot out of Obama’s ass. It means stop fucking lying and start fucking working.

We have to do it for ourselves. We need to organize at the community level.1

Sitting behind a keyboard typing about how many penises Obama took from you simply pushes the Teabilly/GOP takeover onward.

Seriously. We need to take this fight to the streets and to Fox News’s front door. Fox News is killing this country. It is brainwashing people into thinking that they should be attacking one another. They are dividing the middle class and then pitting the two sides against each other and they are doing it on behalf of the Tea Party and the GOP.

So enough already.

If you want to be a nihilist and talk about how we’re fucked and there’s nothing we can do about it, then go get your smelling salts and your fainting couch and get the fuck out of the way.

If you want to talk about “Well they got the leadership they voted for; you reap what you sow” then get the fuck out of the way.

We are 4 Senators and 1 President away from total fucking apocalyptic ruin. Let those of us who still give a shit go about trying to fix this mess.

The rest of you? GET OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY.

In Wisconsin. In Ohio. In Michigan. In Florida.

All across the country, the True Liberals’ efforts to teach Barack Obama a lesson are paying off in spades. Their plan could not have worked out more perfectly. After a year of shouting to the highest heavens about how much they were disappointed in President Obama and the Democrats, after a year promising to withhold their support during the 2010 Midterm campaign and, more importantly, at the ballot box, they got their wish: Democrats stayed home in droves. Huge numbers of Democrats across the country, many of whom had voted for the very first time in 2008, got up and went to the fridge instead of the polls that late Fall Tuesday.

Yesterday, in Wisconsin, the tea party Governor and his cadre of Republican Senators figured out a way to bypass Senate Democrats’ exploitation of a loophole that allowed them to put the brakes on a GOP effort to drive a stake into the heart of unions in their state. Most collective bargaining rights for teachers and public employees are now gone as if they were trash taken to the curb. Sure, Scott Walker’s favorables took a beating there for awhile. If it weren’t for that pesky quorum loophole, this would have all been taken care of weeks ago and his numbers wouldn’t have tanked so far. But that’s water under the bridge and now they are back on track. The unions have been squashed like bugs and they can go back to laughing at the protesters as they are frisked and searched and scanned just to enter a public building.

Barack Obama has really got to be smarting over that, eh? He’s really paid the price now, by golly.

In Michigan yesterday, the GOP-controlled Senate passed a bill that enhances the Republican Governor’s ability to declare financial emergencies in municipalities and appoint an Emergency Financial Manager (EFM). This EFM will have authority to do pretty much whatever they wish including suspending contracts with unions and other groups and even firing the existing elected officials. Rachel Maddow explained it very well the other night. There was a protest at the Capitol before the vote, of course. Over 700 people showed up, mostly union employees. Know what the Republican who introduced the bill said about the protest? “I don’t think it had an effect outside of the fact we had to talk a little bit louder today.” Ouch. They had to talk a little louder.

But that’s not all that is coming down the pipeline in Michigan. The Republican Governor’s budget taxes public and private pensions that helps the elderly. It eliminates the Earned Income Tax Credit that helps the poor. It eliminates a huge tax credit for filmmakers in Michigan, killing that job-creating baby in its crib. It eliminates tax credits for vehicle battery manufacturers, strangling a nascent industry before it even gets off the ground. It eliminates tax credits for redeveloping brownfield sites, ensuring that new industrial development will take place on undeveloped, pristine lands rather than on already-despoiled soil. Here’s one: there’s a union-busting bill in Congress to make Michigan a “Right to Work” state or, as the unions call it, a “Right to Work for LESS” state. All of this and businesses are getting billions of dollars in tax breaks, paid for by the elderly, the poor and whichever other down-trodden groups you can name.

“Eclectablog, what shall we do???!” I’m asked. “We can’t let this stand. We must protest. Where is OFA???”

What can we do? We can’t do ANYTHING! In Michigan, the Republicans control the House. The Republicans control the Senate. The Republicans control the Supreme Court. The Governor is a Republican. When we protest, they just talk a little louder. And after they get done redistricting our formerly solid-Democratic state this year, we’ll be lucky if our dog catchers are Democrats.

Protest at the Capitol? Sorry, I won’t waste my time.

But, I’ll tell you this: President Obama has surely learned his lesson. These union-busting, pro-business moves by the Michigan GOP have got to be chapping his britches something fierce.

It’s happening in Florida, too. Tea Party Governor Rick Scott is unstoppable. He’s solving his state’s multi-billion dollar deficit by cutting taxes on businesses by several billion dollars and he’s cutting teachers’ pay to do it. He’s rejecting federal funds to develop high-speed rail.

Take that, Obama!

How about Ohio? The Republican Governor there is assaulting the unions, too. And the only difference between Wisconsin and these other three states is that Wisconsin Democratic Senators had a quorum loophole they could use to stop a vote. Well, they could stop it for three weeks. Then the unions got their asses handed to them anyway.

Last night Rachel Maddow said her staff’s analysis shows there are Republican-sponsored union-busting bills in the Congresses of no less than SEVENTEEN states.

Ed Schultz has been on fire on MSNBC these past three weeks, hasn’t he? Nothing like pure, unadulterated union-busting by Republicans to get old Ed fired up and ready to go. A let’s not pretend Ed didn’t have a plan for this all along, right? Remember this from him last fall?

And I’m announcing today, I’m not going to vote in the midterms. I’m not going to do it. You can say it’s un-American. No, it’s rather revolutionary is what it is. I’m at that point. I’m checking out. I’m checking out of the Democrats because they are proving to me that they don’t know how to handle these big babies over on the right that say no. You know what you do? You get in the driver’s seat, you hit the throttle, and you run over them.

Un-American? Hell no, Ed! That’s as American as it gets. Hell, it’s practically Republican, it’s so American! Create a problem that you yourself can benefit from. Help make sure the GOP takes control by helping suppress the Democratic vote then watch your rating positively SOAR when you get to be on television almost non-stop when they start crushing unions like cockroaches.

Man, you sure showed them, Ed. Obama has really got to be feeling this now, what with all those union people getting crushed and taxes being cut on the backs of the poor and the elderly.

And, let’s make no mistake, it’s not just Ed who is teaching a lesson to Obama. Here’s part of an email I got recently from a friend, a liberal who is disappointed in the President. I had reached out to him to help us start organizing in our area so that we’re ready to really hit the ground hard for the 2012 elections. He was very active in 2008 so I had hoped that he and others in our area would be eager to help get Dems elected again in 2012 considering that they control everything in our state right now. Hah. Boy was I ever wrong:

Thank you and everyone for all the hard work you guys do and will be doing. I really enjoyed working with all of you a couple of years ago.

Unless there are some drastic changes in his policies over the next few months which I doubt I simply cannot bring myself to put forth my time and money to help this President. I thought we were electing someone who would fight for our ideals and yet he has managed to compromise on just about every campaign issue he was for. From health care which no public option was even fought for, to tax cuts for the top 2% that he instantly gave, Gitmo, etc. And the major issue is the fact we are bombing even more than the Bush administration in Pakistan killing innocent people. The economic and other issue I may be able to get past but this I can’t. Along with Rendition still going on.

President Obama will probably still get my vote as from what I see the other side will probably have someone even worse but that will be to the extent of my support for him.

It’s not just him. I’m hearing this from lots of Democrats. Hell, I see it on the progressive blogs like Daily Kos on a daily, even hourly, basis. They are going to teach Obama a lesson for not delivering everything they want by handing the keys to the kingdom back to the people who are most likely to screw them over.

So, I hope you like watching the unions getting squashed. I hope you enjoy watching business taxes being cut while taxes are raised on the poor and the elderly. I hope you enjoy watching environmental regulations done away with and health insurance reform rolled back. I hope you will enjoy it when even the modest regulatory reforms on Wall Street are sent to the dustbin of history and the improvements in our food regulatory system are done away with. I hope you will enjoy it when the reproductive rights of women are taken away and the rights of minorities are degraded; when same sex couples see their dream marriage sent down the garbage disposal and members of the LGBT community are put back in the military closet. We all need to start getting used to these things.

Why? Because all that stands between us and all of these things and more happening is four Senators and one President.

We have a choice to make and we better start getting on that because the first debates of the 2012 election are next month.

If Democrats stay home in droves next year, we’ll lose the Senate and the Oval Office, too, and what you’re seeing in Michigan will just be a microcosm of what will happen nationally.

But, hey, at least Obama will have learned a lesson.

Sometimes, I don’t even know why I care anymore. I have a J.D.; I make a tidy sum of money. When the shit goes down, I’m ready — plane ticket to New Zealand in hand. I’ll go work in my friend’s restaurant and watch the good ol’ US of A burn via remote satellite in sleepy Queenstown, New Zealand. Hell, if I don’t want to leave the country just yet, I could hide in my apartment and eat arugula salads and spicy mustard all day. But for some dumb fucking reason, I actually care about other people, even when they are too stupid to care for themselves. I’M NOT DONE YET!

Are you?

1 If you want to know how the Tea Party took over Wisconsin, you must read Abe Sauer’s Article A Blueprint for a Takeover: Wisconsin Republicans Lied While the Kochs Schemed posted over at The Awl. It is long, but at the end, you’re going to realize that we are being outsmarted by a bunch of fucking Teabilly idiots because we are wasting time arguing with each other.2

2 No, the irony is not lost on me.

JON STEWART OPENING : In the battle over abortion and women’s productive rights, pro-life groups have opened up a new front.

RICK SANTORUM (1/24/2011): For the first, well, more than 100 years in this country, when we denied personhood to human life, in the form of black people in America… now, the Supreme Court, 100 years later in 1973… they’re going to say that this group of people, human life in the womb, is going to be denied personhood.

JON STEWART OPENING: Yes, oddly enough, the pro-life movement is using the black community to make their point, equating abortion with slavery. And… throwing in a little bit of the genocide for good measure. Eh, you gotta watch it.

SEAN HANNITY: They say black women abort their children at 5 times the rate of whites in America.

RICK SANTORUM: The black population should be almost double what it is today.

JON STEWART OPENING: It’s what they’ve always wanted. For more, I’m joined by Senior Women’s Affairs Correspondent Kristen Schaal and Senior Black Correspondent Larry Wilmore. Guys, thanks so much for being here, appreciate it.

JON STEWART: The new pro-life campaign touches on both of your areas of expertise obviously, so I wanted to get both your spins on this. Larry, why don’t you start?

LARRY WILMORE: Sure, Jon. Oh, white people, I am so sorry. I had no idea that black people get 5 times more abortions than white people. I mean, I know we already kick your ass in sports and music, but… we’re dominating in that area as well? Hey, you can have abortion back, we’ll get good at math. Watch your back, Asians!

STEWART: I’m sorry, Kristen, you… are you OK? You seem upset. Are you upset by this?

KRISTEN SCHAAL: I… I don’t want to be a slaveowner. I didn’t realize that being pro-choice meant perpetrating slavery. I mean, forget about abortion, I mean, what about pregnancy? That’s keeping a fetus captive for 9 months in our middle passage, sloshing back and forth in the 100-degree heat, chained to an umbilical cord like an animal! It’s so inhumane!

STEWART: But… I don’t know if they mean it metaphorically, women obviously are not slave ships. I mean, don’t we have to balance the competing interests of the mother and the fetus? Is that…?

SCHAAL: Well, all I know is that on the next Census, I’m declaring all 300,000 of my eggs as whole people. And I’m going to give them reparations!

WILMORE: Great, even your ovaries get reparations before I do. Look, listen, I know these guys want to make a point, but you don’t do it by appropriating the worst thing that happened to other people. Equating anything you don’t like to slavery trivializes centuries of suffering. It’s like the Holocaust of analogies.

STEWART: (stunned pause) This campaign isn’t really just about slavery, it also reaches out to African-Americans in other controversial ways. Take a look at this.

AP (2/24/2011): This massive billboard standing tall over a busy street reads, “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.”

WILMORE: Come on, Jon, the womb is the most dangerous place for black people? At the most, it’s 17th, behind the Magic Johnson Theater at the premiere of a Big Momma movie.

STEWART: Wow. 17th?

SCHAAL: Yeah, Jon, 17th. We did the research, didn’t we Larry?, for a new show we just filmed for the Discovery Channel.

STEWART: What’s….? Can I ask, and again, I’m not an ad executive, but why is there a fishing boat in the promo?

SCHAAL: Oh, you’d rather if it was a giant picture of a gaping vagina?

STEWART: OK, OK, OK.

SCHAAL: I fought for that.

STEWART: Fair point, fair point. Um, is this new anti-abortion campaign an effective message for the black community?

WILMORE: Well, Jon, if politicians are so concerned about what’s killing black people, how about curing diabetes or sickle cell? Or ban something that kills us on the inside: Tyler Perry’s House of Pain.

SCHAAL: And speaking for women, those politicians should stay the hell out of our wombs.

STEWART: Oh, is that because for you, abortion is a private matter?

SCHAAL: No, because it’s not safe in there! Weren’t you listening? Deadliest Snatch!

STEWART: Please don’t… please don’t show the poster again, if that’s…. But isn’t there a valid point though to be made about, shouldn’t we work to reduce the number of abortions? Especially in the black community, or really, any community.

WILMORE: Yeah, I get their point, Jon. We need to make more black babies. And if black women’s vaginas are as dangerous as they say, I know what we have to do now.

STEWART: (confused look) Reduce rates through education and…?

WILMORE: No, Jon, we need to make black babies in a safer, cleaner alternative: white women’s vaginas!

SCHAAL: You know, if it’s interracial, it counts as black!

WILMORE: That’s true. C’mon Kristen, let’s make a black baby. (starts to take off jacket) That’s right, we’re going to start it right now, Jon.

SCHAAL: I thought… well, I thought this was just a bit.

WILMORE: Kristen, no, remember? We were in the Deadliest Snatch, I said if we ever get out, you would owe me one.

SCHAAL: One black baby?

WILMORE: Yeah!

STEWART: Larry, I really don’t think….

WILMORE: Jon, not now, not now. C’mon Kristen, think how adorable they are.

SCHAAL: Aww, and their little Timberland boots?

WILMORE: Yeah! (fist bump)

(online video cuts off here, what follows did air on TV)

SCHAAL: OK, let’s do this!

STEWART: We’re going to go.

WILMORE: Jon, can we use this right here? (points at desk)

STEWART: No, you can use that, that’s fine. We’re going to go. We’re going to be right back. Kristen Schaal and Larry Wilmore, everybody. We’ll be right back.

Mike Huckabee is Talking Shit About Natalie Portman

This post is in: Kiss My Black Ass, Religion, Vagina Outrage, Assholes

Derp.

Every time I look at this picture, my stomach turns. Why should I have to suffer alone?

Mike Huckabee — who is concerned that Barack Obama is, like, totally blackity blackity black black,y’all, was born in Kenya, and wasn’t a “traditional” American with the Rotary Clubs and the Kiwanis Clubs and the other stuff — is now downright concerned that Natalie Portman’s crotchfruit will be born a bastard, because apparently people still give a shit about that sort of nonsense:

Appearing on the Michael Medved Show, Huckabee had this to say Portman:

You know Michael, one of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.

You know, right now, 75 percent of black kids in this country are born out of wedlock. 61 percent of Hispanic kids — across the board, 41 percent of all live births in America are out of wedlock births. And the cost of that is simply staggering.

So let me get this straight. The Huckster is concerned about the colored kids born out of wedlock, but at the same time wants to force all women to have babies should they become pregnant through rape, contraception failure, a mistake, or rampant sluttery, and then he has the temerity to lament the poor uneducated and unemployed status of the zombie babymakers single moms while at the same time preaching abstinence only.

How has his head not exploded from cognitive dissonance?

Here are some choice quotes from Huckster. Gather round, kids! Ladies, protect your vadge because Huck wants to get all up in it and regulate:

show full post on front page

On the Christian culture war:

Despite all our prosperity, pomp, and power, the vaunted American experiment in liberty seems to be disintegrating before our very eyes. …

Abortion, environmentalism, AIDS, pornography, drug abuse, and homosexual activism have fragmented and polarized our communities. …

It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations – from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia.

On prayer in schools and the moral decline of society:

How did we move in one generation from a society with a shared, confident sense of right to a society of relativism and moral decay? The first step to answering that question is to admit there isn’t just one answer. I’ve heard that it all started when we took prayer out of schools. That’s a simplistic answer. It wasn’t just prayer in schools; it wasn’t just TV; it wasn’t just Watergate; it wasn’t just welfare.

If any force is going to overcome a free, prosperous country like America, it won’t happen all at once. America has a solid foundation of liberty, personal dignity, and opportunity.

The only way to destroy something with that kind of foundation is to chip away at it, one value at a time. Take away its heart and essence. Bring doubt to what used to be confidence, denial to what used to be faith, death to what was life. I think that is what has happened.

On rape babies and forced birth:

Q: South Dakota had some proposed legislation to outlaw all abortion except saving the life of a mother, no exceptions for rape or incest. You said you’d sign that. Why?

HUCKABEE: I always am going to err on the side of life. I believe life is precious. I have been in the pro-life camp since I was a teenager. It’s because of my view that God is the creator and instigator of life. But those of us in the pro-life movement have to do also some expanding.

On states’ rights and forced birth:

Well, it’s the logic of the Civil War. If morality is the point here, and if it’s right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can’t have 50 different versions of what’s right and what’s wrong. Again, that’s what the whole Civil War was about. Can you have states saying slavery is OK, other states saying it’s not? If abortion is a moral issue–and for many of us it is, and I know for others it’s not. So if you decide that it’s just a political issue, then that’s a perfectly acceptable, logical conclusion. But for those of us for whom this is a moral question, you can’t simply have 50 different versions of what’s right.

On abstinence and slutty kids:

Abstinence education provides a valuable counterweight to peer pressure and the message young people get from the popular culture encouraging casual relationships and separating sex from love, commitment and marriage. I do not believe in teaching about sex or contraception in public schools. That is the responsibility of parents.

I am disappointed that funding for abstinence education is not likely to be renewed by the Democrat Congress. This reversal only emphasizes how important it is for Republicans to take back Congress and win the White House with an authentic conservative in 2008. I miss the America I grew up in where the Gideons gave Bibles to fifth graders instead of school nurses giving condoms to eighth graders. With so much at stake, it’s important that we return to the core values and guiding principles which have made our country great.

Don’t fuck with the Portman, Huckabee. She’ll cut you.

Pepsi Max: Hide Your White Women

It just had to be a young white girl, didn’t it?

Aside from that fact that it is utterly ridiculous that whoever squeezed out this turd thinks diet soda has to be called “MAX” or “EXXXTREME” lest guys feel too “gay” drinking it, this ad is lazy, stupid, and ultimately offensive. I get that companies market to black people, so fine: I don’t care about the angry black harpy stereotype about black women, or the “my woman thinks i can’t do anything right” stereotype about black men (all men, really). It was the “black man’s carnal lust for the white girl” stereotype that carried this commercial from stupid to downright offensive. I mean, would it have been so hard to pick a girl of any other race?

Good thing I prefer Coke.

Reanimating the Horse and then Beating It Again

by Imani Gandy (ABL)|  January 20, 20113:16 pm| 361 Comments

This post is in: Kiss My Black Ass

I’m going to repost a comment I just wrote in John’s thread because — well — because I am.

I’ve written multiple posts about the racism among the diarists and commenters at FDL (before I started posting over here). Other commenters in this and yesterday’s thread have mentioned that they are offended by the language and dogwhistles at FDL. This is not an isolated incident. I’ve directed my criticism directly at Jane. She has been nonresponsive (while calling me one of John’s lackeys, of course, because heaven forbid I have any independent thought). Moreover, that type of language continues to appear on FDL.

At what point is one required to take responsibility for the offensive language that permeates one’s blog? It doesn’t matter to me that, like Kos, FDL is a teeming mass of personal diaries. They are still FDL diaries and are held to some sort of standard (as linked by Moderator Rayne) but not to the standard of “don’t use the word nigger” (THAT WORD) despite proclaiming that FDL doesn’t “use THAT word.” They do use that word; they just try to lessen the blow by slapping some asterisks in there.

Why is it my job to prove that the use of racially offensive language is pervasive enough to deem FDL racist? Why isn’t it her job to keep her diarists and commenters in line or, at the very least, fire her moderators and open up the blog to real debate?

Why is it that those who read FDL come over here to defend the use of that language, or to debate it? Because they don’t get that sort of debate over there because of the moderation of all contrary views. I imagine when they are confronted with someone who doesn’t agree with them (like the one commenter who got shouted down and called a member of the Word Police), it must be like a slap in the face to them.

It’s really not that hard to understand: Don’t say nigger. There are plenty of other word choices.

And to those who say “Well, don’t read FDL if you don’t like it,” I say “No. I will read it and I will call it out.” FDL isn’t some insignificant blog. And when the overlord of that blog continually appears on MSNBC and is one-note in her criticism of All Things Obama, while continuing to allow racially charged language and posts to appear on her blog, she is fomenting racism—not supporting or condoning—fomenting. She may not be racist, but at best, she doesn’t care that the use of that language is offensive. That, in and of itself, is offensive.

If I ever used the word “cunt” or even worse “white cunts” to describe white women, do you think John wouldn’t send me an email telling me to watch my mouth? Do you think John wouldn’t take down the post or change the language—change it, not just asterisk it? And if he didn’t, do you think that women and/or white women juicers would be wrong in their outrage?

The diarist told me to ask John whether or not John thought the diarist is racist. That is patently absurd. First, I didn’t call him racist (I said he used racist language) and second, WTF? “Go ask that white guy whether or not I’m racist. He’ll be the decider.” Really?

I’m ashamed at and embarrassed for some of you. We’re supposed to be liberals, goddamnit. What is so hard about not using the fucking term “house nigger”? I can’t believe some of you don’t see a problem with the language, and I’m shocked that some of you are actually defending it.

It truly is shameful.

Rick Santorum Amazed that Black People are Pro-Choice

Ricky? Lose That Number.1

Why is Rick Santorum breathing air that could best be used by someone with a brain?

In eyebrow raising comments, possible presidential hopeful Rick Santorum is questioning how President Barack Obama — as an African-American — can support abortion rights.

Santorum, a former Republican senator from Pennsylvania who is seriously considering a run for his party’s 2012 presidential nomination, argued in an interview that a fetus is a person and said he considers it “almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.’”

Discussing Obama’s views on abortion during a two-hour sit-down with CNS News on Thursday, Santorum said the president’s pro-choice position meant he was valuing some lives over others.

“The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn’t want to answer — is that human life a person under the Constitution?” he said.

“And Barack Obama says no. Well, if that human life is not a person, then I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.’”

Who are we to decide who are or are not people? We’re barely people ourselves!

I mean… WHAT!?

1 I don’t know what this means. Just go with it.

Firedoglake: With All Due Civility, Go F**k Yourself

This post is in: Kiss My Black Ass, Assholes

Repeatedly and with prejudice.

A month ago, I wrote a post about the racism which is festering and beginning to ooze out of the open sore known as Firedoglake. Essentially, my point was that if FDL continues to ban opposing viewpoints in its comment section, it owns the racism contained therein. Soon after that post, I stopped reading FDL because it was doing nothing but raising my blood pressure.

Well, last night I took a break from not reading FDL and, like a dumbass, I read FDL. Here’s what I found in a post about restoring the unions and strengthening the labor movement [I’m not linking to that sewer, but you can Google “The Liberal Blogosphere Is A Neoliberal Blogosphere, Unfortunately” and find it your ownself]:

The basic problem is that the Rich ate all the pie. What do you intend to do about it? Snuggle up to their Democratic Party incarnation some more in the hope of getting some crumbs? There used to be a term for that, on the plantations. House N****r.

My jaw dropped when I read that line. My jaw dropped further when I realized it was more than 50 comments later before a commenter decried the use of the term as offensive. My jaw eventually fell right off my face when other commenters began to defend the diarist’s use of the language as “appropriate” and a matter about which the parties could “agree to disagree.” Eventually the diarist chimed in to defend himself:

Contrary to “oldgold” I would have used exactly the same analogy and word choice if Obama were not president. He can either choose to believe me or not, as he sees fit.

Being of Scottish birth and upbringing I care not a whit whether someone is black, white, yellow, purple polkadotted or striped…as long as he isn’t English (jk!).

There were other phrases I considered but none had the immediate impact and accessibility of the one I chose, denoting what should be fellow-travellers in poverty who have sold out for the crumbs from the Rich man’s table. “Lumpenproletariat” was too old-fashioned and inpenetrable while not conveying the betrayal involved; “Judenrat” would, I think, have been even more contraversial [sic].

But I’d much rather the conversation wasn’t bogged down in my word choice. I apologise for any offense caused, however inadvertently. Substitute “class traitors” or some other phrase mentally if you wish and concentrate on the rest of the post.

Regards, Steve

The anti-Semitic language is a nice touch, I think. As is the “mistakes were made/I apologize if you were offended but it was inadvertent anyway”-style apology. Classic GOP, innit? Oh, and did I mention that this post was published on MLK Day? So there’s that, too.

But let’s not get bogged down in his racist and offensive language. Just substitute some other non-race-based word and let’s focus on the rest of the post, shall we? Because as a later commenter informs us, “only fucking whites would make a stink about it.” It’s silly to make a stink out of referring to Democrats as House niggers and who wants to hear you PC Police tut-tutting about it? No one, that’s who.

After I rettached my jaw to my face with a rusty butter knife and some glue, I re-read the first comment; it appears to have been posted by a moderator:

Editor’s note: Thank you for your post. Please see the site’s rules at http://my.firedoglake.com/aboutus. The first excerpt used has been edited to three grafs; the site of origin does not have a clear copyright notice, but it’s also not clear that reprinting nearly 700 words here was with the original author’s permission.

Please also note we do not use THAT word here.

And the response from the diarist:

Thanks for the edit-job, Rayne, and keeping me straight on the site rules.

Thanks for the kind words, szielinski!

Regards, Steve

Now I may be reading this incorrectly, but it seems to me that Moderator Rayne, after pointing out that “we” (FDL) do not use “THAT word,” went into the diary and did a little editing — by changing THAT word (nigger) to THIS word (n****r).

::blank stare::

So it appears to be FDL’s policy not to use racist words, but to use racist word-markers. Neither permutation of the racist and offensive word removes the racism or the offensiveness of the word. Besides, “n****r” isn’t a word; it’s an asterisk sandwich.

Normally, I would post my favorite Louis C.K. clip on “The N Word” and how it’s just a way for white people to get away with saying the word “nigger.” Instead, in the spirit of the dawning of the Age of Civility, I’m going to post this Richard Pryor clip:

Also, I would normally start finger ranting right about now, but I’m not going to do that. There’s no need. I’ve already ranted about the racism at FDL. These people are as irrelevant as Sarah Palin and are not to be taken seriously anymore.

I’m simply going to file this new bit of information in my lockbox of “Shit That Is Bananas” and keep it moving.

Check out the screenshots, and if you’re inclined to rant, go right ahead. I’m remaining fucking civil goddamnit:

The inmates are running the asylum over there.
