Forced-Birth Militants

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Vagina Outrage, Assholes

Reporting on the homey domestic front of the War Against Women, the NYTimes discovers “Sabotage of Birth Control“:

Men who abuse women physically and emotionally may also sabotage their partners’ birth control, pressuring them to become pregnant against their will, new reports suggest.
__
Several small studies have described this kind of coercion among low-income teenagers and young adults with a history of violence by intimate partners. Now, a report being released Tuesday by the federally financed National Domestic Violence Hotline says 1 in 4 women who agreed to answer questions after calling the hot line said a partner had pressured them to become pregnant, told them not to use contraceptives, or forced them to have unprotected sex.
[…] __
The hot line’s report did not include a comparison group and did not gather information about the participants, who were questioned anonymously; nor was it published in a peer-reviewed journal. It was based on answers to four questions posed to 3,169 women around the country who contacted the domestic violence hot line between Aug. 16 and Sept. 26, 2010, who were not in immediate danger and who agreed to participate. About 6,800 callers refused to answer the questions.
__
Of those who did respond, about a quarter said yes to one or more of these three questions: “Has your partner or ex ever told you not to use any birth control?” “Has your partner or ex-partner ever tried to force or pressure you to become pregnant?” “Has your partner or ex ever made you have sex without a condom so that you would get pregnant?”
__
One in six answered yes to the question “Has your partner or ex-partner ever taken off the condom during sex so that you would get pregnant?”
__
The questions were devised by Dr. Elizabeth Miller, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis, whose earlier papers on reproductive coercion prompted interest in the subject.
__
“It’s really important to recognize reproductive coercion as another mechanism for control in an unhealthy relationship,” Dr. Miller said.
[…] __
Dr. Miller’s paper, published last year in the journal Contraception, reported that at five family planning clinics in Northern California, one-third of 683 female patients whose partners were physically abusive said the men had also pressured them to become pregnant or had sabotaged their birth control. Of 191 women who reported birth control sabotage, 79 percent also reported physical abuse, the study found…
__
Ms. James, of the Family Violence Prevention Fund, said that despite the new attention to reproductive coercion, she doubted it was a new phenomenon.
__
“I just think not enough people have been asking the question,” she said.

What’s the difference between the ignorant low-class thugs using forced pregnancy as a brutalizing tactic as effective as a fist to the face, and the pious legislators promoting “heartbeat laws” and telling hospitals to let women with ectopic pregnancies bleed to death? Just that the legislators don’t run even the slightest risk of going to jail when their victims die.

You Call it Murder, They Call it “Pro-Life”

This post is in: Vagina Outrage, Assholes, Both Sides Do It!, Fucked-up-edness

The war on women continues in South Dakota:

A law under consideration in South Dakota would expand the definition of “justifiable homicide” to include killings that are intended to prevent harm to a fetus—a move that could make it legal to kill doctors who perform abortions. The Republican-backed legislation, House Bill 1171, has passed out of committee on a nine-to-three party-line vote, and is expected to face a floor vote in the state’s GOP-dominated House of Representatives soon.

The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Phil Jensen, a committed foe of abortion rights, alters the state’s legal definition of justifiable homicide by adding language stating that a homicide is permissible if committed by a person “while resisting an attempt to harm” that person’s unborn child or the unborn child of that person’s spouse, partner, parent, or child. If the bill passes, it could in theory allow a woman’s father, mother, son, daughter, or husband to kill anyone who tried to provide that woman an abortion—even if she wanted one.

Jensen did not return calls to his home or his office requesting comment on the bill, which is cosponsored by 22 other state representatives and four state senators.

“The bill in South Dakota is an invitation to murder abortion providers,” says Vicki Saporta, the president of the National Abortion Federation, the professional association of abortion providers. Since 1993, eight doctors have been assassinated at the hands of anti-abortion extremists, and another 17 have been the victims of murder attempts. Some of the perpetrators of those crimes have tried to use the justifiable homicide defense at their trials. “This is not an abstract bill,” Saporta says. The measure could have major implications if a “misguided extremist invokes this ‘self-defense’ statute to justify the murder of a doctor, nurse or volunteer,” the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families warned in a message to supporters last week.

Republicans in South Dakota are attempting to pass legislation to legalize what happened to George Tiller. It’s so crazy I can’t even bring myself to comment.

Although I will note that at one time, a pro-choice advocate may have said “fuck,” so both sides are responsible for this crazy climate.

Pepsi Max: Hide Your White Women

This post is in: Kiss My Black Ass, Vagina Outrage

It just had to be a young white girl, didn’t it?

Aside from that fact that it is utterly ridiculous that whoever squeezed out this turd thinks diet soda has to be called “MAX” or “EXXXTREME” lest guys feel too “gay” drinking it, this ad is lazy, stupid, and ultimately offensive. I get that companies market to black people, so fine: I don’t care about the angry black harpy stereotype about black women, or the “my woman thinks i can’t do anything right” stereotype about black men (all men, really). It was the “black man’s carnal lust for the white girl” stereotype that carried this commercial from stupid to downright offensive. I mean, would it have been so hard to pick a girl of any other race?

Good thing I prefer Coke.

Georgia Republican Bobby Franklin: You say you’re a rape victim? Uh-uh — not so fast. Prove it!

by Imani Gandy (ABL)|  February 4, 20118:12 pm| 116 Comments

This post is in: Vagina Outrage, Assholes

Fuck these people. Seriously.

Fresh off the heels of the Republican effort to redefine rape, Georgia Republicans have begun their latest assault on women1: Representative Bobby Franklin (R-GA) has introduced a bill to change the state’s criminal and civil codes so that victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence can no longer be called “victims” but must be called “accusers” until the defendant has been convicted.

Let that sink in for a minute. If your brain hasn’t exploded already, proceed with caution. I make no guarantees about the intacted-ness of your grey matter upon reading the rest of this post.

The downgrading of “victim” to mere “accuser” applies only to rape, as far as I can tell. If you’ve been mugged, or robbed, or defrauded, you’re still a victim. (And poor you, by the way.) If some person has violated you sexually without your consent, however, you’re just an accuser: we don’t quite believe you yet; we need to know how much you had to drink; we need to determine whether you were wearing slutty boots, fuck me heels, or booty shorts; we also need to know whether or not you’re just saying you were raped because he didn’t call you the next day.

According to the language of the bill, its purpose is:

show full post on front page

To amend Titles 16 and 17 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to criminal law and criminal procedure, respectively, so as to change the term ‘victim’ to the term ‘accuser’ in the context of a number of statutes making reference to circumstances where there has not yet been a criminal conviction; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

The proposed bill screeches short of decriminalizing rape altogether:

“When evidence relating to an allegation of rape is collected in the course of a medical examination of the person who is the victim accuser of the alleged crime perpetrator, the law enforcement agency investigating the alleged crime shall be responsible for the cost of the medical examination to the extent that expense is incurred for the limited purpose of collecting evidence.”

So there you have it. Another offensive strike in the battle over the right of women to decide for themselves what may reside in their uterus, whether it be a baby or an unwanted penis. Republicans (and a handful of Democrats) don’t think women should be able to decide whether or not they should be forced to rent space in their body for nine months, whether they want to or not, and don’t have the wherewithal to determine whether or not they’ve been fucking raped. The proposed bill forces victims of rape to undergo the painful process of pursuing criminal conviction even though they may not want to just so they have the fucking RIGHT to be called a victim.

Should such a bill pass, it would be the most shameless form of publicly-sanctioned victim-blaming in recent history. It would also pave the way to further reduce women’s access to abortion, which is, in my view, the whole fucking point.

Let’s take another look at that stated purpose of the bill:

To amend Titles 16 and 17 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to criminal law and criminal procedure, respectively, so as to change the term ‘victim’ to the term ‘accuser’ in the context of a number of statutes making reference to circumstances where there has not yet been a criminal conviction; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

I wonder what those “other purposes” are, hmm? Well, given the Republicans latest assault on abortion rights, and their attempt to redefine rape to include the term “forcible,” their goal must be to make sure that only Real Rape Victims have access to abortion.

“[A]nd for other purposes” must mean “for purposes of deciding who we deem worthy of the choice to decide whether or not to carry a baby to term.” If abortions are available only to rape victims (whether “rape rape” victims or “rapish” victims), and in order to be deemed a rape victim, one’s rapist must be convicted, then you might as well just go ahead and decide to have that rape baby right now because chasing that Rape Victim status is probably more fucking trouble than it’s worth.

Think about it — once you’ve been raped, it becomes a race again the clock! You gotta pick yourself up, shrug your shoulders — “Damn! Raped again!” — head over to the hospital to get checked out, talk to the police, help them find your rapist (er… “alleged perpetrator”), then keep the pressure on the police detectives and the D.A. to prosecute the motherfucker just so you can get your “I Got Raped And All I Got Was This Stupid Rape Certificate” certificate.

Only when you’ve accomplished all of these goals — chop chop! You only have three to four months because you don’t want to have to deal with a late-term abortion, do ya? — can you even think about getting an abortion. And what of the appeals process? Can you be a rape victim only after the “alleged perpetrator” has exhausted his appellate rights? What about a mistrial? A hung jury? Do any of these impediments to a final judgment delay your ability to achieve meritorious Rape Victim status?

What the fuck?

I hate people.

To send this asshole Bobby Franklin a hearty “fuck you!” visit his Facebook page.

1 I say women because most rape victims (at least reported victims) are women.

I Need To Convene a Blogger Ethics Panel

I’m curious if Conor F. will call me shrill or over the top or accuse me of using vile rhetoric if I point out that this makes the GOP objectively pro-rape, to borrow some warblogger terminology from years gone by. That’s right, ladies- the only way you are allowed any say in a pregnancy resulting from rape is if the rapist roughed you up a bit. Otherwise, the fetus rules.

… “this time”, I should add. From Jodi Jacobsen at RH Reality Check, “‘Sex Traffickers’ Target Planned Parenthood in Possible Live Action Films Hoax“:

In what is perhaps one of the most craven actions of a deeply craven movement, anti-choice scam artists apparently affiliated with Live Action Films and Lila Rose of undercover “gotcha film-fame” appear to have attempted an “ACORN-like” hoax on Planned Parenthood Federation of America by sending people into Planned Parenthood health centers in six states posing as sex traffickers seeking health care for young girls who were “part” of their supposed sex trafficking rings.
__
In response, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder describing the visits and asking for an investigation. In a statement, PPFA said:
__
Last week, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) alerted federal authorities to a potential multistate sex trafficking ring. Over a five day period, visitors to Planned Parenthood health centers in six states said they were seeking information from Planned Parenthood about health services Planned Parenthood could provide to underage girls who were part of a sex trafficking ring. Subsequent to alerting U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Planned Parenthood learned the identify of one of those involved and believes these visits are likely a hoax by opponents of legal abortion seeking to discredit Planned Parenthood, which delivers preventive health care and abortion services to three million women each year.
__
PPFA reports that men, sometimes accompanied by a woman, “visited at least 11 Planned Parenthood health centers in six states within a one-week time frame.” The visits were made between January 11th and January 15th to health centers in Virginia, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Arizona. “Among them was a clinic in Tucson, Ariz., which Planned Parenthood said was visited on the 15th, a week after [emphasis added] the shooting rampage in that city that critically injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords…

Jacobsen links to an AP article, “Planned Parenthood seeks FBI probe“:

Lila Rose began infiltrating abortion clinics in 2006. One of her early collaborators was James O’Keefe, who later became famous for wearing a pimp costume in a video that embarrassed the community organizing group ACORN.

show full post on front page

__
After forming Live Action, Rose gained prominence with a series of undercover videos in which she posed as a girl in her early teens who’d been impregnated by an older man. The aim was to portray Planned Parenthood staff as willing to ignore laws that required the reporting of cases of suspected statutory rape. In Indiana, one clinic employee was fired and another resigned after Live Action videos were released.
__
In December, Live Action announced that it was preparing to launch several major new investigations during 2011 and said it had received a $125,000 gift to finance the operations. It did not identify the source of that gift.
__
Rose has said her goal is to unnerve Planned Parenthood employees and eventually put them out of business.
__
“We will work to de-fund them in every state wherever it is possible, to de-license them and to expose them,” she told the conservative Value Voters Summit in October.
__
“The other part of it, too, is to create controversy within the organization, keep them on their toes,” she said. “We need to help them feel that fear.”

Jacobsen updated her original post: “As of 12:14 pm, January 25th, 2011, Jill Stanek has stated on her website that Lila Rose did indeed send pseudo “sex traffickers” into PPFA clinics (“They’ve been stung again by Lila Rose….”) and also warns of “explosive evidence,” of which they of course present… none. They appear to have no credible response to exposure of their efforts to perpetrate a hoax on Planned Parenthood.”

Hat tip to commentor Southern Beale for the link.

The difference between Planned Parenthood and ACORN, of course, is that PP has been dealing with armed zealots and terrorists bent on murder for its entire existence — but especially since the rise of the “Moral Majority” whose entire morality seems to consist of abusing other people’s autonomy, health, and safety.

Even Randall Terry’s Given Up on the Repubs

by Anne Laurie|  January 21, 20116:39 am| 40 Comments

This post is in: C.R.E.A.M., Election 2012, Vagina Outrage, Assholes, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell, I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own

No doubt jealous of all the high-visibility media Fred Phelps has been hogging with threats to picket the funeral of a murdered nine-year-old, “anti-abortion noisemaker” and professional terrorist enabler Randall Terry is making a show of running for President:

… [A]t a press conference held outside the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington today, Terry outlined loftier goals for his run for president, including freeing the tea party movement from leaders he says are intent on shying away from social issues and the humiliation of President Obama in Iowa, the state where his unlikely journey to the White House began in earnest back in 2008.
__
“We will focus on a theocentric libertarian platform,” Terry told the crowd of maybe a couple dozen supporters and press.

I’m sure Ross Doubthat already has his credit card out, looking to make the maximum possible donation. If anything could make me feel sorry for libertarians, having Randall Terry claim their kinship would be it.

… Terry is mounting his theocratic political crusade from a Democratic ballot line, challenging Obama for the party’s nomination. As one reporter pointed out at the presser, Terry has described himself as a Republican in the past, and his theocentric libertarian message certainly sounds like it would appeal to Republican voters more than it would Democratic ones. But Terry said running as a Democrat effectively allows him to cut out the middle man when it comes to casting votes against Obama.
__
“I don’t want to quarrel with Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee,” Terry said. “I want to focus on the madman, Obama. Obama is the central figure of voter rage. There are people, myself included, who loathe this presidency. By going against him in a Democratic primary, I can focus on him like a laser beam and I will.”
__
In the past, Terry has thrown his support behind Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), who many social conservatives view as their 2012 choice. It’s not clear that Pence will run for the Republican nomination but if he does, Terry can steer clear of tangling with him by running on the Democratic side.

Translation: Sideshow Randy doesn’t want to threaten his permanent meal ticket by drawing untoward comparisons with the burgeoning Repub crop of fools, goons, carnie geeks and professional grifters currently jostling for media attention. As he very well knows, those folks’ supporters have hair-trigger tempers, and the hair triggers to match. (Whoops, uncivil!)

show full post on front page

…”What you have is you have people like Dick Armey and Newt Gingrich trying to steal — literally buy and steal — the tea party movement,” Terry told me in an interview after the press conference. “And they’re corrupting a few select people to say, ‘Oh, stay away from the social issues, they’re too controversial, we want to focus on money.’ Baloney. Human rights, the right to life, civil liberty — those are the foundations of this republic.”

Shorter Terry: How dare these soft-handed K Street johnnys-come-lately try to poach my simple flock! I’ve been milking these earnest morans since long before Jeb Bush and Tom DeLay could dry-hump Terri Shiavo’s memory in the public legislatures!

This is good news for the Democrats (seriously). In a decent society, Randall Terry would be serving multiple life sentences for fraud, extortion, and terrorism — and the most “dedicated” of his supporters would have access to the mental health services they so desperately need. But if this monster is sniffing around the Democratic caucuses, it’s evidence that even a bottom-feeding sociopath has stopped taking the current crop of Republican “contenders” seriously.
