Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Ajabu Shares a Personal Story

by WaterGirl|  July 6, 20228:00 pm| 98 Comments

This post is in: Civil Rights, Open Threads, Supreme Court, The War On Women, Women's Rights

Ajabu shares a very personal story.

In light of the SCOTUS decision, I want to share a very personal story of my own pre-Roe experience that I’ve never discussed publicly, but because you jackals are like family I want you to hear it.  I need you to hear it.   Considering that the other two principals (girlfriend and doctor) are both deceased, it’s become my story alone.

What the Extreme Court has just done is to recreate the horror I’m about to describe.  I realize as I contemplate writing this that all the minor details that I thought I’d for gotten over the decades are flooding back, so it’s clear that I was more affected by this than I thought I was.

I’m old now.  In 1967 I wasn’t.  In early 1967 I got my steady girlfriend – my first true love that I adored – pregnant.  At the time she was a 20 year old student, raised by a single mother and the first in her family to attend college.

I was a young musician struggling to establish myself as a professional.  I wasn’t upset that she was pregnant.  I had wanted to marry her anyway.  Her response, however, was she wan’t about to drop out of college and said, “If I marry you it will be in spite of, not because of, the pregnancy.”

So we were looking at the only other option.  Abortion.  A totally illegal and VERY expensive procedure.  It had to be right.  I loved her.  And I’d heard the stories of coat hangers and back alleys.  Time was of the essence.

I was terrified of the cost.  Not that I wouldn’t pay it.  I just didn’t have it!

I talked to everyone I knew, looking for a solution.

Days became weeks, and still no answer.  Fortunately for me, a pianist I was working with came from old money and his mother was a an M.D.with some sense and a connection!!

She wasn’t about to get directly involved, but passed on contact info to a Dr. Robert Spencer through her son.  Dr. Spencer was apparently already famous as an illegal abortionist.  Check his Wikipedia page.  He was!  And his price was $50!!!  Hallelujah!!

And that’s when the spy novel shit started for real.

I had to write to a P.O. box. “Dear Dr. Spencer: I have been told by a friend you may be able to help me.  Date of the last period was xx/xx.”  I mailed it and waited.  And the clock was ticking…

About a week later I received an envelope in the mail with no return address.  55 years later I can can still quote it verbatim: “On Monday at Noon and the following A.M.  Bring no luggage to the office.  Make no arrangements to stay until you have been examined.  Be careful.  This is the most difficult time.”

The letter arrived on a Saturday.  This was 1967.  No ATMs.  No access to money.  I had no credit cards and he was in Ashland, PA.  I had to fly there by Monday morning.  To see a (hopefully legitimate) stranger to perform surgery on my girlfriend on the basis of a cryptic, unsigned, typed note.

First things first.  I had to find some money, book a flight and explain to my girlfriend’s mother what was going on.  I was able to get the local grocer to let me cash a check for $100 so we could at least eat and get a room.

I then called the pianist whose mother arranged it and he advanced the plane fare and gave me more cash for me to return to him when the bank opened on Monday.

Then the hard part – her Mom.  I must have talked a hell of a game because once she recovered from the initial shock and rage she agreed to allow her daughter to get a 6:00 am flight to another state with me, to see a stranger for an illegal procedure.  She hoped to see her daughter alive again.

Monday morning we set out.  We flew to Reading, PA, rented a car and drove to Ashland.  We arrived about 10:00 am and went to the office.  Greeted by an elderly receptionist.  I looked at our surroundings.  A bunch of goofy signs like “We grow too soon old and too late smart.”   An equally elderly gentleman arrived and escorted my girlfriend back to the exam room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.  I’m in a nightmare scenario being tended to by Dementia patients posing as medical staff.

When she returned with some pills and an appointment for 9:00 the next morning, we went to check into our motel.  I was struck by the fact that Ashland is a small rural (white) town and the only apparent minorities were us (Black) and another young couple (Asian) while the locals were like “Oh, Dr, Spencer’s abortion patients, huh?”  We were like exhibits…

The night was bizarre.  After taking the medication, Girlfriend spent the night on the toilet trying to induce whatever while I tried to comfort her.  It was a nightmare.

With very little sleep we headed to our morning appointment.  Everything went smoothly (although I was still concerned that we were dealing with geriatric medical staff).  This was a blind contact, after all.  They took her to the operating room, and I spent an endless agonizing time alone waiting for the conclusion and hoping for the best.

At last, the assistant, a man in his 80’s I’d guess, came out to tell me that the procedure went well, no complications – however – she was still unconscious and needed to be moved to the recovery room.  Neither of these elderly men were physically able to pick up an unconscious young woman, they had no rolling equipment, and I was invited into the operating room to remove her from the table and carry her to recovery.

I then spent the next hour holding her hand waiting for her to regain consciousness.  She finally did, I left her to dress and paid the $50 bill.  FIFTY DOLLARS!  For saving this young girl’s future…

Dr. Robert Spencer had been performing these procedures illegally since 1921 simply because because he was a good, righteous and moral man doing the right thing and, in my eyes, a Saint!

We left, drove back to Reading and stopped to eat before going to the airport.  I found a pay phone and called her Mom.  She answered with fear in her voice.  I said, “I’m bringing you back a carefree college girl.”

From that day forward till the day she died, I was Mom’s favorite person.  We took our flight home and resumed our lives, already in progress.*  Relieved, but emotionally exhausted.  It shouldn’t have been so fucking complicated!

Addendum:

*I don’t want to give the impression that this was easy.  Quite the contrary.  That’s why I’ve included so much detail.  The experience had a profound impact both emotionally and psychologically on both of us.   It changed the trajectory of our lives.

We reluctantly participated in a felony (that never should have been a criminal act to begin with) and, because of the nature of the situation and secrecy surrounding it, kept us in a state of confusion and random terror all the way through.  And we were kids at the time.

Six years later I could have driven her to a local facility where she’d have been prepared and nurtured throughout.

Now?  FUCK SCOTUS!!

* Dr. Spencer died in 1969 having done extraordinary good for nearly 50 years.  Rest In Power!

* Girlfriend and I never could quite get past this experience, never married but never completely let go.  We remained close friends (and frequently lovers) for another 20 years. She never married.  I did.  We remained friends till she died.

I know the cruelty is the point, but how the hell could ‘thoughtfully bitchy’ Libby Emmons be damaged enough to tweet out something this depraved?

As a factual description of political cause and effect this is nonsense, but as a would-be performance of virtue it's also incredibly depraved: sorry, libs, you wouldn't bend the knee, so we decided to punish a 10-year-old rape victim to set an example https://t.co/caqQaNM6e6

… Due to its connection to social programs provided by the government, which assigns benefits based on agricultural and non-agricultural residency status (often referred to as rural and urban), the hukou system is sometimes likened to a form of caste system. It has been the source of much inequality over the decades since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, as urban residents received benefits that ranged from retirement pension to education to health care, while rural citizens were often left to fend for themselves. In recent years, the central government has begun to reform the system in response to protests and a changing economic system, while some Western experts question whether these changes have been of substance…

Staying Safe While Protesting Redux

I have been informed that a number of you all were asking if we could repost my suggestions for staying safe while protesting. Watergirl was good enough to proactively go and dig at least one of the versions/reposts of the original post from December 2018. We’ll resume our war updates tomorrow night.

I’ve made an addition or two to the original list, but if you’ve decided you need to go to a march or a rally, the list below is for you.

I want to remind everyone that we’ve seen a number of acts of violence, by both domestic right wing extremists like the Proud Boys or Patriot Front and from law enforcement, directed at people attending both Pride events and marches and rallies in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs. We have also seen at least one individual decide to drive around oncoming traffic in an attempt to murder marchers by driving over them in his truck. Given that a number of states have passed laws allowing drivers to treat marchers and rally goers in the street as threats and because they’re threats drive over them, please check your state laws to see whether that might be something you need to worry about.

Congress shall make no law… abridging…the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. — Amendment 1, Bill of Rights, US Constitution

One of our readers/commenters emailed me about a week ago and asked if I would put up a post about personal security for those going to peaceably assemble to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. I put a list together and ran it past a select group of our Balloon Juice legal eagles (those I’ve corresponded with before/have corresponded with me, so if you didn’t get asked, don’t be insulted I didn’t want to just impose on you with a cold request) – thank you all for getting back to me. Here’s my list of what I think anyone going to peacefully assemble should do to enhance their personal security.

  1. Go with a buddy, that way you have at least one person looking out for you/watching your back and vice versa.
  2. Carry cash and make sure to carry a valid picture ID!
  3. Bring a pocket flashlight.
  4. Get and wear a go pro that is automatically updating to the cloud.
  5. Bring a pocket charger for your cell phone and go pro regardless of whether it is supposed to be a long day.
  6. I you’re bringing them with you, make sure your personal electronic devices – phones, tablets, and wearables like smart watches – all have sufficient password protection and encryption on them. And have them set to upload to the cloud at a regular interval.
  7. Turn off fingerprint, face, or other biometric access to unlock your phone and delete your finger prints, face scans, and/or other biometris from the memory. Some jurisdictions allow law enforcement to compel you to unlock your phone if it has finger print or face scan based access. Or get a disposable phone just for this occasion.
  8. Turn off your phone and other personal electronic devices option to connect to known WiFi as it can be used as a way to fail your encryption. Also, turn off the GPS locators and tracking on them as well!
  9. Bring a bandana or neck gaiter and water so you can make a make shift gas mask in case things get out of hand and tear gas or pepper spray is deployed.
  10. Bring a couple of bottles of saline eye rinse in case you need to rinse your eyes out if tear gas or pepper spray is deployed.
  11. Bring plenty of water and some snacks to make sure you’re properly hydrated and you’ve got enough fuel in your system to get through the day.
  12. Dress in layers so you are prepared for the weather and make sure you have good shoes/boots and a change of socks in case they should get wet. A set of silk base layer undersocks is a good idea regardless of the weather. They’ll help keep your feet warm or cool as needed and they’ll provide some protection in case your shoes/boots and socks get wet. And something to keep the back of your neck and your ears warm if you’re going to be someplace cold.
  13. Bring/wear a hat to keep the sun off your head or to keep it warm depending on the weather.
  14. Bring/wear eye protection. Specifically sunglasses that are impact rated. (You should be able to pick up military surplus ones pretty cheap).
  15. Sunscreen, skin moisturizer, and lip balm. Even if its cold you’ll need these.
  16. If you need to take regular/routine prescription medication: bring it in its original container, with the prescription details on the label. If its a gel based application and comes in a packet, make sure you’ve got a hard copy of the prescription with you.
  17. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. You don’t have to be paranoid, but have a sufficient level of situational awareness. If something looks and/or feels hinky or the hair on the back of your neck stands up, head on home or go get a drink and something or go back to your hotel. Know who and what is around you, keep your valuables in front pockets or in secure/securable purses/bags, and keep those where they can’t be easily snatched or accessed.
  18. Have a contact plan for both linking up and communicating in case one gets separated from anyone you’re with.
  19. Have a contact plan to stay in touch with someone who isn’t at the march, but knows that you’re there and a regular set of contact times.
  20. Have a lawyer you can contact if necessary and that your outside contact could contact if you don’t check in. Make sure you have all of your contact’s phone numbers memorized in case your phone is damaged or taken by law enforcement should the worst happen and you’re arrested. Write them on your arm in sharpie if you want double redundancy.
  21. Bring a sharpie to take down badge numbers if necessary. And if necessary write them on your hand.
  22. This is a new one: Put together a first aid kit and buy a velcro attaching red cross patch to place on it. The minimum basics should be: saline solution, at least two tourniquets, at least two Israeli bandages, and quick clot – both the gauze pads and the granule applicator system – in addition to the basics like band aids, regular gauze, both cloth coaches tape and paper tape, antibac gel, anti-burn/sunburn spray or gel, anti-itch gel, etc. We have unfortunately reached the point where everyone should have tourniquets and quickclot with them all the time.

Should the worst happen and you get caught up in a peaceable assembly that suddenly turns not so peaceable or that law enforcement decides to declare an unlawful assembly so they can brake things up:

  1. Do not resist law enforcement. Just do what they say, let your arms go limp, and do what you can to avoid a reflex response to resist – that can get you charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.
  2. Be respectful and polite when dealing with the authorities – law enforcement, the National Park Service, whoever.
  3. If you are arrested, ask for a lawyer and then shut up. Do not say anything else or answer any other questions until your lawyer arrives. In fact let the lawyer do the talking.
  4. And make sure you have the name and phone number of the attorney you want, if you have a preference, ready to go. Memorize it and write it on your arm in sharpie!

One last item: some of you probably carry a pocket knife or multi-tool everywhere. Or everywhere that you’re normally allowed. I would recommend not carrying anything on your possession that could be construed as a concealed weapon or even an openly carried one. Even if you’re in a state/jurisdiction that allows for concealed or open carry of knives and/or other weapons – don’t. Being part of a march or peaceful assembly that turns ugly is not a good time to attempt firearms (or knife) normalization.

Stay Frosty!

Vanita Gupta on Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade: “The decision is absolutely devastating…We are going to look at every available tool using all of the tools that we have…But the reality is…our tools are not the same as Congress’s and Congress’s ability to pass the law.” pic.twitter.com/xvmV83lHbD

… In a Dear Colleague letter released on Monday, Pelosi writes that she intends to bring several abortion measures to the floor. First, she will bring legislation that “protects women’s most intimate and personal data stored in reproductive health apps” to address fears that such information “could be used against women by a sinister prosecutor in a state that criminalizes abortion.” Pelosi is certainly right that Americans are worried about the government or big business accumulating data on them. Will Republicans allow the government to seize such personal information?

Second, Pelosi will bring forward legislation that makes clear “Americans have the Constitutional right to travel freely and voluntarily throughout the United States.” The targets here, of course, are red states where antiabortion zealots aim to reach beyond their borders by punishing women who seek abortions in other states.

Third, Pelosi will once more force a vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, which she describes as the “landmark legislation to enshrine Roe v. Wade into the law of the land.” She might also consider bringing up legislation to correct some of the most egregious results of Republicans’ agenda. For example, how about a bill that ensures minors who are victims of rape and incest are guaranteed access to abortion? Or that allows a woman to end a pregnancy if it poses “serious health consequences”?

Pelosi is not stopping there. She writes: “In his disturbing concurrence, Justice Clarence Thomas confirmed many of our deepest fears about where this decision might lead: taking aim at additional long-standing precedent and cherished privacy rights, from access to contraception and in-vitro fertilization to marriage equality. Legislation is being introduced to further codify freedoms which Americans currently enjoy.”…

We should resurrect a mantra from the early 1970s: A government that can force you to give birth is a government that can force you to have an abortion.

Some good news, while (if) it lasts:

Abortions can resume in Texas after a judge blocked officials from enforcing a nearly century-old ban that was back in effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to the procedure across America https://t.co/BKyJWPH2dc pic.twitter.com/f8YddvWXi5

The clinic started calling patients as soon as they learned the TX pre-Roe ban had been blocked.

“Can you get here today?” an administrator asked each woman.

“Come as soon as you can,” she said, aware that the state could file an appeal at any moment.https://t.co/Bjo2pdI1lO

Creepy Grifters Open Thread: WE WILL ADOPT YOUR BABY

Seriously: they’re professional, globe-trotting CHUZ LYFE! grifters. They could certainly afford to adopt a baby, individually or as a couple — and they could probably find a suitable infant in their home countries, if they really cared — but they’re standing outside the Supreme Court, taunting American women whose personal autonomy has just been stolen, because it’s good for their brand.

I haven’t checked for a ‘Christian’ GoFundMe clone page, because ugh. But the real dollar value for these two is showing this photo, and its million social-media repeats, to deep-pocket donors looking for professional representation in the anti-autonomy sphere.

(that was a rhetorical question – the couple outside the supreme court with the “we will adopt your baby” sign is sebastian schuff and neydy casillas. they cannot actually adopt your baby because neither of them are US citizens) pic.twitter.com/NUC7yvH1M8
