Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Second rate reporter says what?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Republicans in disarray!

After roe, women are no longer free.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

In my day, never was longer.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Rush: Still Losing

by $8 blue check mistermix|  March 4, 20128:48 am| 100 Comments

This post is in: The War On Women

The latest ad by Rush Limbaugh's new ad agency.

I saw this in a local coffee shop yesterday–it’s for a couple of third-tier religious/talk-radio stations, one of which headlines Michael Savage. This is where Rush is headed if he keeps it up. The scorecard on his advertisers is brutal. He’s lost six, including Carbonite backup, who dropped him last night after his lame apology and did it with a tough statement from the CEO:

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

People have been boycotting Rush forever, and obviously Carbonite didn’t give a shit about civilized public discourse then, which makes the politics of this very interesting. First, Obama’s call had to be a tipping point, and it was a pitch perfect way to criticize Rush without getting down in the muck with him. Second, with the current state of the Republican party, there’s no need to worry about them meeting us halfway on any issue. Here’s a bit of claim chowder from Amanda Marcotte that’s still fresh:

“Some women aren’t even taking the birth control pill for contraception! They need it for cramps/endometriosis/etc.”
Every time you say this, a right winger wanting to imply that women who have sex for pleasure are sluts gets his wings. This statement and all variations on it feeds into the right wing claim that a) contraception is not health care and b) that women who have sex for pleasure are so indefensible that you have to lean on off-label uses for a contraceptive drug to justify its existence. It also does absolutely nothing to defend the non-pill contraception that’s covered by the health care act, such as IUDs or sterilization. Plus, that gives them an easy out, which is to say that they’re fine with insurance covering pills that are prescribed for non-contraception use, but just object to prescriptions for women who use them to prevent pregnancy.

I don’t disagree with the ideology of that post, but in hindsight the politics are wrong. Fluke’s testimony, as John pointed out, was all about the use of the pill for ovarian cysts. It didn’t matter, she was still called a slut, but the extreme reasonableness of Fluke’s position made Rush look even more unreasonable. Marcotte’s critique is sort of the flip side of Obama’s attempt to draw the Republicans into compromise over healthcare reform or deficit reduction. In each case, the underlying wrong assumption is that Republicans will make a politically smart compromise to advance their agenda. Any argument that makes that assumption in the 2012 campaign should be immediately suspect.

Ed Morrissey is a Shameless Liar

Special Ed:

I think Rush did the right thing in apologizing to Fluke. However, let’s keep in mind that it was Fluke who made her sexual activity a matter of national political debate by insisting that the government pass laws and regulations forcing employers and insurers to provide her free contraception, and apparently as much as she and others demand. It’s Republicans who believe that contraception should remain a private affair, and that employers and insurers should be free to decide whether to cover contraception for their employees and customers or not. Democrats used Fluke to demand that those choices be stripped from private enterprises and instead be forced by the executive branch to entirely subsidize contraception.

Ed Morrissey is simply lying. There is no other word for it. This is a bald-faced lie. Miss Fluke did not once make any mention of her sexual activity, and, in fact, listed cases in which birth control was necessary for non-sexual medical conditions. There was no mention of her sex life, sexual preferences, or sexual activity. Every single thing she said was about women’s health issues. She no more opened a debate on her sex life than someone testifying for blood pressure medicine being part of health insurance coverage opened a national debate on their eating habits and exercise regimen. Ed is lying. Here is her testimony:

For those of you who can not watch videos, here is a .pdf of the transcript. At no point anywhere in her testimony did Sandra Fluke make any mention of her sexual activity. Never.

I challenge Ed right now- show me where she talked about her sex life in that testimony, and I will write a check for $1,000.00 to the RNC. She simply didn’t make her sex life the topic of discussion, and Ed is lying out his ass. You could watch that video or read the transcript, and as far as you could tell, Miss Fluke might very well be a virgin.

Ed is lying. The people who made this issue, which was about medical health, into an issue about Sandra Fluke’s sex life are Rush Limbaugh and all the amoral cretins like Ed who decided that just like Graeme Frost, anyone who goes against what the right wants RIGHT NOW, is a target who needs to be destroyed.

So take the challenge, or apologize for lying, Ed. $1000.00 to the RNC the moment you can show me where she discussed her sex life, you lying sack of shit.

My reaction to Rush Limbaugh’s apology, like my reaction to Komen’s shit-canning of Karen Handel, is two words: Uh. Winning.

Rush Limbaugh and Nancy Brinker backed down because they were scared, mostly of losing sponsors. They didn’t see the error of their ways, they saw their careers flash before their eyes.

There are those of you (though I’d like to think I’ve alienated most of the hard-core totebaggers at this point) who think that everything would be fine in American politics if Mark Shields could just make the most thoughtful, incisive possible argument to David Brooks. You know I ain’t down with that shit, Lieutenant. Human beings are greedy, fearful, irrational beings, and most (maybe all) of what makes conservativism ascendant right now is its ability to scare — xenophobes into voting against their own economic interests, “journalists” into deference, elected officials into toeing the teahad line, liberals into keeping their mouth shuts — and bribe (do I even need to give you examples?).

Andrew Breitbart’s so-called success is a testimony to the power of intimidation. Anne-Laurie’s post gives a perfect example.

Never forget that. When liberals cower in fear of the awesome moral and political power of right-wing Bishops and talk show hosts, we lose. When we say “I wish a motherfucker would try to ban contraceptives”, we win.

After getting hit in the wallet, Rush backs down, sort of:

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.

No one is talking about recreational sex except for you perverts. You were the ones talking about it, debating how much sex young coeds were having, and begging for videos, you jackass. We’re talking about that women being able to have medical treatment covered under their health care insurance that is part of their compensation from their employers.

He’s just such an asshole.

“Slut” is the New “Liberal”

Proving that Rush runs the conversation in the Republican Party, the California Republicans’ Communications Director has rolled out her new strategy–if you disagree with Rush, then you’re a slut.

Let’s remember that the whole slut thing started with Darrell Issa, who was supposed to be the ball of fire House Oversight chair who would make Democrats pee their pants and cry for their mothers. It was his genius strategy to bring a bunch of old, white, male clerics to testify about how their precious religious fee-fees were harmed by insurance covering contraception. Sandra Fluke was the Democrats’ response to that sausage fest. As soon as she appeared on the scene, Issa’s bullshit religious freedom talking point got turned into a full-on slut shaming exercise:

Beating up on a college student is not good optics, and refocusing on her argument that this is about contraception instead of getting the focused squarely on the Obama Administration’s disdain for religious liberty and the First Amendment….is simply not very helpful to the cause.

That’s a DC Republican strategist, who, like Issa, thought the Republicans could play with fire and enjoy its gentle glow from a civilized distance. Any moron can see that a half dozen old white bishops and rabbis aren’t upset about the First Amendment–they’re pissed that they don’t control when, where and how women have sex. To think that the current Republican base would be content with a hint in that direction, rather than a full-throated roar, just shows that establishment Republicans like Issa and this unnamed strategist are completely out of touch with the monster that’s eating their party alive.

The phrase War On Women is starting to crop up on some of the internets. I recommend using the phrase as much as possible. I’ve made it a tag.

We’ll know we’re winning when Politifact rates it as “false”.

The shape we’re in

This post is in: The War On Women, Peak Wingnut Was a Lie!

A good summary from Steve M.:

For those who are still in denial about the extremism of modern-day Republicans, the past week — hell, the past 24 hours — should have been a cold slap in the face, a big jolt of reality. Rush Limbaugh, praised for years by Republicans, declared an honorary member of the House freshman class in the Contract with America year of 1994, pal to Dick Cheney all through his time as vice president, attacks an advocate of contraceptive coverage as a slut and a prostitute and, after being criticized, doubles down, demanding that the woman “post [sex] videos online” in return for contraceptive coverage. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, honorary Arizona co-chair of Mitt Romney’s 2008 campaign, backer of Rick Perry last fall until he dropped out of the race, object of the entreaties of Rick Santorum, holds a press conference today to reassert that the long-form Obama birth certificate is a fake. (Santorum, when he met with Arpaio last week, was briefed on Arpaio’s birther “investigation” and didn’t immediately distance himself from the sheriff.) Oh, and what else? Nearly every Republican senator  voted for the Blunt amendment? Andrew Breitbart died and much of the right concluded that President Obama murdered him? And, five days ago, Rick Santorum declared that anyone who wants more Americans to have access to college is a “snob”?

And only a few months til we’re told that we’re a right-center nation who should respect Mitt Romney’s Hayekian modesty.
