Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Republicans in disarray!

Let there be snark.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

California Fire Check-in and Update – UncleEb and BigJimSlade

by WaterGirl|  January 10, 20254:30 pm| 63 Comments

This post is in: Balloon Juice, Climate Change, Wildfires

We hadn’t heard from BigJimSlade since the first night when he learned his home was gone, so I wrote to him.  (His mom lost her home, too.) They owned their homes and insurance claims have been filed, but who knows what kind of clusterfuck that will be.  I’m still waiting to hear back from BigJimSlade to see what we can do to help.

UncleEb lost their rental home and all their belongings in the fire.  Since they were renting, their loss is all belongings.  They have a GoFundMe set up.  So let’s see what we can do to help UncleEb, but maybe don’t blow your whole wad until we know what kind of help BigJimSlade could use?

How about the rest of you BJ peeps in California?  Everybody okay?  Is the fire a bit less crazy?  I’m sure more people are still losing their homes.

My nephew had to evacuate and they were staying with friends.  Then yesterday they got an evacuation order at the friend’s place.   And there’s looting in their own neighborhood.  Everyone’s ability to cope is surely stretched to the limit.

The horror of these fires knows no bounds.   Love to all our California peeps.

Been getting a lot of people asking about LA geography concerned that the images they see means the entire county is on fire. That's understandable.
But LA is a big place. So, to give an idea of scale it's time to cart this out again. It's a map of LA with other cities superimposed on it.

Ok. This one is a good complement so you can see the neighborhoods and surrounding cities.

We’ve been watching the Watch Duty team do absolutely *unbelievable* technical work all week (they’re members of our Fast Forward open source program), handling a surge of millions of people trying to see where the fires are in real time. There are still people who do such good on the internet.

This is also a good time to remind everyone, update your pets microchip information. We found pets after fires and were unable to reunite them with owners because information was out of date

Most succinct fact-check I've read of how LA Fire Dept's budget wasn't recently cut — in fact, the opposite — from @politico.com. But that misinformation spread anyway. www.politico.com/news/2025/01…

I have found great uplift by dwelling on the model of decency, compassion and love of country Jimmy Carter provided us, but can I also say: It was uplifting to see all the surviving presidents give the felon the cold shoulder and Obama, generously, taking one for the team.

And the actuaries shall inherit the Earth

The insurance industry believes in climate change no matter what the MAGA says to their cult.

These BlueSky posts are about State Farm pulling out from parts of the Southern California property insurance market over the summer.

I am betting State Farm’s actuaries and risk management teams looked at their numbers and basically said that no matter the premium level charged, losses would be greater than premiums and overhead in these areas do to increased wildfire risk so the best option for the company was to get the hell out of the region with substantial notice to their former policy holders.

That is just my bet.

Actuaries rule the world over a long enough time horizon and as the world’s climate changes due to very predictable mechanisms, actuaries will be making very unpopular decisions as they attempt to balance future premiums to future obligations. Their choices are to cover less, charge more or run like hell.

Fire Check-in for Our California Peeps, Day 2

by WaterGirl|  January 9, 202510:09 am| 57 Comments

This post is in: Climate Change, Open Threads, Wildfires

So far, it looks like our California peeps were physically safe at the end of yesterday, but some are facing terrible losses.

It looks like UncleEb and BigJimSlade have lost their homes.  Please let us know what we can do to help.  With so many homes being lost, how do you find a place to stay?

What’s the expectation for today?  Have the crazy winds died down?

Hoping our California peeps can stay safe and will check in with us!

Fire Check-in for Our California Peeps

Edit: I keep hoping against hope that one or both of those houses miraculously didn’t burn after all.
Never would I be so happy to be wrong.

Coffee Is Good (Open Thread)

Cup of coffee with a swamp as background

It’s all relative, but the weather sucks here this week. Highs are in the 50s and lows in the 30s. That might sound balmy if you’re in Rochester.

But I have to jump in the water Friday, so I’m kinda miffed about it. At least the springs will be warm and the manatees plentiful. I’ll try to get pics. In the meantime, coffee and lots of it.

***

The eagle pair returned this morning. They wheeled over the river, their dark bodies and contrasting white heads and tails stark against the blue sky.

One eagle carried vegetation to the other in a tall tree on the bank opposite our place, where they’re apparently building a nest.

Eagle in a tree.

Above is one of the crappy pics I took yesterday. I’m so hoping they stick around and raise some eaglets. The tree is distant, but I have a pretty good spotting scope.

***

I’ve been occupying myself with lots of small projects. So far, I re-tiled a backsplash, re-caulked two sinks, touched up paint and organized two closets.

Bill is working much harder than I am downstairs, where he is replacing the drywall that he ripped out after the flood. (In the Mildew State, ya gotta take care of demo right away or mold will engulf the building and its inhabitants.)

I think we deserve an evening at the pub after all this. I hope y’all are having a peaceful day and staying safe. If you’re a Californian, consider checking in below in the thread for that purpose.

I now know that my nephew is safely evacuated, along with his fiancée and their dog.  And my cousin is good for now.

I suck at geography (along with time zones) so I don’t know who’s at risk and who isn’t.

Hoping our California peeps can stay safe and will check in with us!

Stay safe everyone.

[Optional soundtrack for the post]

So 2024 has completely changed my relationship with the weather. I used to believe I would make a good Seattle resident because I love rain so much. Gray, cloudy days don’t depress me at all. As long as I can loll around indoors, they make me feel snug and cozy.

Now, after the biblical deluge that temporarily flooded us out of our home, I look askance at clouds. We’ve had mostly bright, sunny days during our displacement, but today was cloudy, and it rained a little bit.

I was pissed at the rain! Fuck off, clouds!
