This post is in: Election 2020, I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Sanders Campaign, Open Threads, Warren for President 2020

Omg Bernie was so shook when they booed his stupid ass. ??

— chris evans (@notcapnamerica) February 26, 2020

The consensus I’m seeing is that, whatever might be said about the other candidates, Bernie Sanders did not have a good debate. Buttigieg, Biden, and Bloomberg all did well attacking him — and Warren, praise Murphy the Trickster God, finally got around to pointing out that while her ‘friend’ had some excellent ideas, she had those same ideas plus an actual record of implementing hers.

Oh, so THIS is what Thanksgiving dinners at white people's houses are like

— Elliot Williams (@elliotcwilliams) February 26, 2020

On the other hand, the South Carolina audience did not preserve the decorum suddenly considered desirable by the out-of-their-depth (un)moderators, which at least gave the Bernistas a chance to unleash their second favorite pastime, insisting that the seating had been ‘rigged’. (It was not rigged; people just disagreed with Sanders, unthinkable as that seemed to his supporters.)

This is like if there’d been a big fight scene in Cocoon

— Rebecca Traister (@rtraister) February 26, 2020

Is it me or is everyone trying to be like Warren last week so it’s um chaotic?

— Nelini Stamp ???? (@NelStamp) February 26, 2020

Vince McMahon. https://t.co/GIIrXm6Mnj

— Greg Pinelo (@gregpinelo) February 26, 2020

so everyone complains that the debates are boring when the candidates go back and forth on substance and then everyone complains that it's chaos when the candidates go after each other

— Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) February 26, 2020

Josh Marshall, at TPM:

… Especially on the first hour it felt like all the contenders finally understood the true terms of the contest and had been given one last two hour chance to level the attacks they wished they’d starting leveling three months ago. The mix of antic questions and desperate attacks made it feel like two hours packed with chaos and bad energy.

Debates only matter inasmuch as they affect the outcome of the race. The rest is just theater criticism about canned answers and yelling. The big question in this primary battle is whether Bernie Sanders builds on his momentum coming out of the first three contests and goes on to a string of victories in Super Tuesday which make it hard for any other candidate to overtake him….

We can talk about who did well, who had what strategy, who should get votes. But this seems like the one operative question, which of these two scenarios happens: Sanders building on his momentum and moving into a dominating lead or Biden using a South Carolina win to check Sanders’ drive and shift the contest to something like a two or three person race.

On those terms I think Biden had about as good a night as he could have hoped for. He himself had a strong debate. But it was more the other things that happened – mainly, Elizabeth Warren continuing to savage Mike Bloomberg; everyone else beating up on Sanders; and Tom Steyer giving a mainly anemic performance. (Steyer may seem like an irrelevancy but he’s actually Biden’s biggest problem in South Carolina.)

Even though it’s usually hyperbole, the next seven days do seem critical for the whole contest.

Things are unlikely to change much before Saturday’s South Carolina primary… although I personally think the Social-Security-eligible candidates should take this opportunity to announce their VP picks, because if Goddess forbid something should happen between now and November (worse: January), I for one would like to know whether it would be Kamala Harris, Julian Castro, or Tulsi Gabbard picking up the fallen torch.

Election Year Open Thread: The Vast Mystery of Elizabeth Warren

To win, you moron. https://t.co/TkcgVQHBKg

— Julia Rosen (@juliarosen) February 24, 2020

I clicked the link, so you don’t have to. She’s picking on Mike Bloomberg! Doesn’t she know how much money he has?!?

… Beginning five days ago at the ninth presidential debate — this one in Las Vegas ahead of the state’s caucuses last Saturday — Warren has made it her mission to savage the billionaire businessman (and former mayor of New York City) at every turn.

“I’d like to talk about who we’re running against,” she said in that debate. “A billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians, and no I’m not talking about Donald Trump, I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg.”

Which is a sick burn! And made some sense for Warren to do, because Bloomberg was surging in national polling and there was a concerted effort at that debate to slow him down! Except that Warren has kept it up, even in the wake of Sanders’ crushing victory in Nevada, a win that has made plain that he is now the favorite be the Democratic standard-bearer against President Donald Trump this fall.

Asked directly by reporters Sunday night whether Sanders is a risky nominee for the Democratic Party, Warren said this: “I think Michael Bloomberg is the riskiest candidate.” Interrupted by another reporter to note that the question was about Sanders, not Bloomberg, Warren replied “I heard you,” before continuing on in her attack against the former New York City mayor…

Why ignore a chance to attack the front-runner in favor of hitting someone who won’t even appear on the ballot until March 3? Especially what that front-runner is harvesting the very voting bloc — liberals — that Warren needs to start reclaiming if she wants to have a chance at relevance after finishing third, fourth and fourth in the first three votes of 2020?…

Because Cillizza is a sexist as well as a professional moron, he has two possible answers: Either Warren’s just out to destroy Bloomberg personally, because she hates rich people, like the nutty elitist Harvard professor lady-person she is; or else she’s “angling” to be Bernie Sanders’ vice president, because it’s her only chance of getting on the ballot. Hey, it’s not like she’s running a real campaign, is it?

Watching Chris ‘Mad Bitcher’ Cillizza swallow his own tongue, live & on camera, would absolutely make the celebration of Warren’s nomination even more joyful.

Warren, in a line that is probably also directed at Bernie Sanders:

"I am not in this fight to talk about change. I am in this fight to make change."

— Molly Hensley-Clancy (@mollyhc) February 23, 2020

FWIW I think Warren has cracked this code, if people would follow her lead. Her issue is *corruption* and the anti-corruption measures that have to go into effect to get things like health care/climate action.

That's agenda, but also a referendum. https://t.co/SLhsHiIO3b

— Mike Caulfield (@holden) February 23, 2020

Another heartwarmer (from a virology-related twitter feed, in case you’re wondering who science people stan):

This is one of the most heartwarming, real, sincere and fantastic personal endorsements of @ewarren I’ve read. — Sarah Lerner (@SarahLerner) February 20, 2020

She gave an absolutely bravura performance, and she’s earned all the media she’s getting. But I swear, some of the Media Village Idiots’ new improved attitude is just that they needed a new “star”. Crazy Bernie didn’t do anything he hasn’t been doing since forever, Uncle Joe was low-energy, they can’t bear to waste their highly-compensated talents on ‘no-hopers’ like Buttigieg and Klobuchar if the best those two deliver is a vinegary version of Midwestern ‘Nice’.

And I suspect, in their heart of hearts, they resent Mike Bloomberg’s Here’s a check, make it rain, peasants attitude. Sure, he lays out a nice buffet at his press avails… and there’s always the chance of winning some of those sweet Bloomberg bucks… but they can tell he doesn’t actually respect them. He won’t even pretend he loves them, and it’s not like he didn’t get his chances up there. Making Bernie wag his finger and yell is too easy to be ‘news’!

Warren keeps it up post-debate on CNN. The Guardian‘s liveblog summary, which pretty well encapsulated what I’m seeing elsewhere:

  • Elizabeth Warren made a strong showing, criticizing rivals with well-prepared remarks. Her campaign reported record fundraising during the debate.
  • Facing his opponents for the first time on the debate stage, Mike Bloomberg found himself fending off attacks from every angle. The candidates questioned his record on race and policing, as well allegations that he encouraged a hostile work environment for women.
  • Bernie Sanders, who is leading in polls, cruised through. He briefly faced criticism over his supporters’ online attacks and said he disapproved of such behavior and disowned those who acted inappropriately.
  • Moderates Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar were at each other’s throats vyying to lead the middle lane.
  • Joe Biden generally failed to breakthrough.
  • Warren & Biden were fighting for their political lives & showed it. Strong performances. Bloomberg will have to up his spending to make up for a v-bad night. Reversal on Klobuchar/Buttigieg: She beat him in NH; he beat her tonight. Bernie took some blows but rolled on.#DemDebate

    — Axios (@axios) February 19, 2020

#PresidentWarren is trending because despite her being 3rd in delegates, 3rd in most national polls and 2nd in endorsements, the media acts as if she doesn't exist. So her supporters are dealing with this blackout by making sure voters know she's still here and still kicking ass.

Suggested EW opening line tomorrow night:
“Gracias to Univision for hosting tonight’s debate and thanks to NBC for including me in something.”

    — Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) February 18, 2020

    The Washington Post:

… Warren’s campaign has avoided the sort of leaks, backbiting and recrimination that bedeviled other campaigns during their slumps. Its venting is very public, with the candidate talking more about whether female candidates get underrated and the campaign running ads about the media erasure.

“The night of the Iowa caucuses, CNN didn’t air Elizabeth’s full speech, but they aired the speeches of other candidates she beat,” reads one Warren ad now running on Facebook. “We can’t count on the media to cover our campaign fairly, so we’re taking our case directly to voters.”…

It’s been suggested I should be doing pro-Warren posts every day. I don’t want to overtax the patience of anyone who prefers a different candidate, but here’s a general plea: If you see something about your favorite, send me a link, so I can share it with everybody!

It's one poll question. But the thing that is very clear from this is how much of a flashpoint it was for Warren's supporters, who were furious at what they said was a stark example of how the media has erased her candidacy.https://t.co/Elue4tFR0k

My only sure bet is that one or both of them will wag a finger at Elizabeth Warren, probably at the encouragement of the moderators. Fortunately, I have faith in my favorite Senator…

Hate to disagree with @DrJasonJohnson, but if Warren goes at Bloomberg tomorrow night, it’s not a “suicide mission.” It’s a return to her fundamental political identity and the most basic theme of her career. It’s not Christie v. Rubio at all.

Something to watch for tomorrow night: Bloomberg’s mental sharpness. Like Sanders, he’s 78 years old (Biden is 77), so it’s a legit concern w all three

If Hillary Clinton had a heart attack 4 years ago and said this, CNN would have run non stop panels featuring Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Oz and a magic wall that only showed various searches of WebMD. https://t.co/kbg5Ps8HKl

Most unpopular qualities for a prez candidate in the new NBC/WSJ poll (combined reservations + very uncomfortable):

    Socialist: 67%
Heart attack in past year: 57%
    75+: 53%
    Self-funder: 41%
    Under 40: 40%
    Gay/lesbian: 27%
    Woman: 14%

    Feb 14-17, RVs, MOE +/- 3.3%

There are still so many candidates and SO MANY PRIMARIES LEFT. 2 of the whitest states in the union have voted and we’re ready to call it for either of the guys that won(?) or the guy buying all the ads?

If we claim we want to “save democracy” we have to let it actually happen??‍♀️
