Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Acts of Kindness: Franco Harris, RIP

by TaMara|  December 21, 20223:38 pm| 39 Comments

This post is in: Make The World A Better Place, Open Threads, We All Need A Little Kindness

As I said this morning to geg6, even this non-football fan knew who Franco was. The President weighs in:

Franco Harris

President Joe Biden
31m •
Say the name Franco Harris and most everyone talks about the catch, the Super Bowls, and the glory he brought to the game of football. But in the fifty years we bonded as friends, I always talked about his character and compassion.

Fifty years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers had just finished a dominant regular season with their first division title. They celebrated Christmas just days after beating the Oakland Raiders on one of the most famous plays in NFL history – the last-second Immaculate Reception by their rookie running back, Franco Harris. While the Steelers would barely lose the conference championship game to the undefeated Miami Dolphins, Franco went on to a Hall of Fame career that led the Steelers to four Super Bowl titles in six years as the dominant team of the 1970’s.

But that’s not why the Pittsburgh Steelers – and Franco – are close to my heart.

It was this week fifty years ago when my first wife and infant daughter were killed and my two young sons were badly injured in a car accident while they were out getting a Christmas tree. I had just been elected to the U.S. Senate and I was in Washington when I got the call and rushed home to Delaware.

I rarely left my boys’ bedside until they got better. But one day I did to go shopping for them. When I returned, they were smiling for the first time since the accident. Art Rooney, the generous and honorable owner of the Steelers, had flown out with a couple of players, including Franco, and the tough as nails Rocky Bleier. Busy with their own lives, they took the time to be with my boys, sign footballs, and then left with no publicity. A small act of kindness that meant the world to us.

Sports have a powerful way of bringing people together. As families gather for Christmas this weekend, there will be countless Pittsburgh Steeler and Penn State fans sharing stories of Franco with their children and grandchildren who will discover his greatness on the field. But I know there will also be countless families like mine that will remember him for all that he did to lift our spirits when we needed it – in the most quiet, personal, and American of ways. We don’t have to ask. We show up. We reach out. We share a compassion that is a source of our enduring strength as a nation.

The last few times I saw Franco were in September and November of 2020 on the campaign trail in Latrobe and Pittsburgh. This week of all weeks, my family remembers him and keeps him close to our hearts.
May God bless, Franco Harris – a dear friend, a good man, and a great American.
May God bless the love of his life Dana, their family, and all of Steeler Nation.

Words can’t begin to describe the pain I am feeling. Franco will always be a brother, mentor and my definition of greatness. He was a legend on the field and the personification of excellence off of the field– A true class act to look up to and aspire to be like. RIP #32 🙏🏿 pic.twitter.com/WOYU4qCZDP

Woke up this morning to the devastating news that my friend Franco Harris passed away during the night. One of the kindest, gentlest men I have ever known. He was a great person & great teammate. Hall of Fame player but so much more than that. A tremendous role model for me! pic.twitter.com/OswJ82x7I1

— Tony Dungy (@TonyDungy) December 21, 2022

And for his true fans, here’s his interview yesterday.

Can I just say, I did not realize that horrible car accident happened on the way to get a Christmas tree. I don’t know why but that makes it even more awful in my mind.

Happy Hanukkah: Light and Hope

A sweet story from Colorado on this third night of Hanukkah:

Because of that final comment about the world’s largest Dreidel, I had to find out more about that. Here’s that story:

Albatrossity sent this to me and it made me smile:

Happy Hanukkah: Light and Hope

And someone linked to this on FB – I tracked down the artist -Betty Matsumoto-Schuch – she does cat greeting cards, seems like that might be a hit here:

Happy Hanukkah: Light and Hope 1

It’s going to be in the sub-zero temps for the next few days (and you know what that means). It also means I might have time to post some holiday sweet treats tomorrow since my Solstice plans have been canceled. No promises.

What is getting you through these cold days? How are you coping with the holidays? I’ve been cooking and baking, as if folks around me haven’t been fed since summer. I also put together bags with cash, granola bars, and gloves for those out in the elements. I am going to try and distributed those today. All that has helped to keep the holiday blues at bay this year (as opposed to just cocooning last year). It does feel like the gloom of the last 18 months of constant death and bad news, is finally lifting. A reminder, as Solstice approaches, that the light does return.

This seems like a good resource for coping with holiday stress and depression if you or someone you know is finding it difficult this season.

Consider this a respite open thread

I had set this aside to use sometime this month when I felt like we needed a break. I didn’t realize it would be needed so soon. Here is just a little kindness to brighten a tough day.

This was too good not to share.

The letter:

This post is in: LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, We All Need A Little Kindness

The second of the three hero patrons who stopped the Club Q shooter has given a statement:

it2-thomas-james-photo-from-us-navy.jpg

Among the heroes identified by witnesses and officials in the Club Q shooting was U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas James, who reportedly charged the suspected shooter with Richard Fierro and possibly others at the bar.

James, through a Centura Heath spokesman, issued a statement Sunday for the first time since the shooting at the Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub.

“I simply wanted to save the family I found,” James said. “If I had my way, I would shield everyone I could from the nonsensical acts of hate in the world, but I am only one person.”

“Thankfully, we are family, and family looks after one another,” James continued. “We came a long way from Stonewall. Bullies aren’t invincible. I want to support everyone who has known the pain and loss that have been all too common these past few years. My thoughts are with those we lost on Nov. 19, and those who are still recovering from their injuries. To the youth, I say be brave. Your family is out there. You are loved and valued. So when you come out of the closet, come out swinging.”

We also know there are more unnamed heroes, those who shielded folks from the shooter, those who led people to safety, and those who rendered aid to the injured. A reminder that one evil person with a gun, despite all the damage done, is outnumbered by good, caring, brave people.

And let’s not forget those we lost that night; here is a link to photos and stories on each of them: Derrick Rump, Daniel Aston, Ashley Paugh, Kelly Loving, and Raymond Green Vance

In our last post on the Club Q shooting, I expressed a desire to learn how to be a better ally. It seemed to strike a chord with others, so here we are. I’ve asked Sister Golden Bear and Dan B, who offered to help on this topic, to hang out with us and get things started. Dan B has a lot going on today but is going to try and stop by. So post your questions and offer any advice or resources you have. I know we have a diverse community here and can learn a lot from each other.

And we don’t need to limit this to LGBTQ+ issues. There are many folks out there who need allies – and this would be a great place to discuss, as well.

It really comes down to, how can we be better citizens and kinder humans, to our neighbors. Discuss. Please be kind.

Acts of Kindness: Dance A Little Each Day

This post is in: We All Need A Little Kindness

I’m really needing this today. We are coming up on the year anniversary of my mom’s passing this week and I thought I was doing okay. I was wrong. I am not. Everything makes me teary, including this trailer for Tom Hanks latest film, which I had to watch several times. And don’t get me started on Queer Eye on Netflix. Ugly cry. But in a good way. So much kindness and feel good in that show. And if you need daily food for your brain/heart, I recommend the vlogbrothers on  youtube. Short videos sure to make you think and feel good.

Okay, on to our regular scheduled acts of kindness:

From a couple of years ago, but still adorable:

I follow Chris and his flock for daily happy videos (you can follow on twitter, IG or youtube). He has morning and evening “rush hour” when the animals are released and then gathered for bed.  Lots of ducks, geese, emus and a variety of mammals. It’s a sanctuary.  I will say, this one was a surprise. LOL

We are already in lockdown here and have been since October 15th, when Avian Flu was found in not just the wild bird population, but several backyard flocks. It kills almost immediately. No bird feeders or water are available for our wild populations on our property, and my neighbors and I no longer exchange eggs.

As we start gearing up for the holidays, here’s a reminder that there are good people in the world:

I love this portrait:

That’s probably plenty for today. How about we finish with some Nick and Nora:

Be kind, especially to yourself, and try to take some time each day to give yourself a break from all the chaos.

Acts of Kindness: A Little Joy All Around

by TaMara|  October 27, 20227:44 pm| 33 Comments

This post is in: We All Need A Little Kindness

Last night seemed a little jammed here on the blog, so decided to wait a day for this. I was running around today, but still wanted to post this, so I didn’t go too deep into the archives, just pulled some of the most recent items.

From prolific Steeplejack, this touching photo. And don’t be surprised if we have a full-jack kindness post sometime soon so I can clean out his wonderful backlog. So much good stuff.

I’ve thought a lot today about my grandfather, who worked underground in the mine. I’ve also had the privilege to go underground with miners in KY and a comment stuck out to me: “We go down together and we come up together.”

They work for each other. The ultimate teammates!!

— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) October 24, 2022

 ETA:

Michael McGuire’s wife, Mollie, said he is an employee of Excel mining and was at work until after 5 p.m. which gave him less than an hour to make the 6 p.m. game.

“My husband chose the job he has to support our family so that I could be home to raise our wonderful children, there are many times he misses out on these events due to work. So any chance he can be there he is, no matter how tired or dirty,” she wrote on Facebook.

Remember our favorite, “I just like corn,” young man? This is the person who is responsible for that.

What is on the minds of kids ages 2-8? Armed with a microphone, Julian Shapiro Barnum finds out in his viral online series “Recess Therapy,” in which children discuss such weighty issues as climate change, money, and peeing in your pants. Correspondent Nancy Giles talks with Shapiro Barnum about why kids still say the darndest things.

===============================

From Quaker in the Basement, a lovely story about lost luggage and a destination wedding saved by kindness:

Paul and AmandaIMAGE SOURCE,WWW.LOVESKYEPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK
Paul and Amanda Riesel were close to giving up on their long-planned wedding on Skye

Islanders rallied to save an American couple’s wedding after their luggage – including the bride’s dress – was lost on their trouble-hit trip to Skye.

Amanda and Paul Riesel arrived the night before their big day with only their wedding rings and flowers after their flight was diverted and delayed.

Skye wedding photographer Rosie Woodhouse took to social media to ask islanders for help.

By the next morning they had provided a dress and a kilt.

Amanda, who had been ready to give up and go home, said Rosie and the community of Skye saved the day.

She said: “Our perfectly imperfect wedding was only a possibility because of Rosie and the wonderful folks in Skye.

“Fate had a hand in our happy day because local Broadford Primary dinner lady, Theresa, was the owner of my dress and I’m also a dinner lady back home.

“Wearing it meant even more to me knowing it came from someone who loves and feeds her students just like I do.”

Lots of photos and more to the story at the link

That’s enough for tonight. I probably owe you critter pics, I’ll get right on that, LOL.
Be kind. Especially to yourself. And please, give yourself a break from current events/politics/pundits for at least a little bit each day.

Acts of Kindness: A Trowel and Some Baseball

by TaMara|  October 19, 20227:22 pm| 46 Comments

This post is in: We All Need A Little Kindness

This is going to be brief tonight, as I pretty sure I only have one, maybe two, brain cells that are currently not suffering jetlag.

From Steeplejack – who made my morning with this sweet story:

My partner pulled off the most wholesome, archaeologically adjacent, bamboozling act of kindness and I had to share it. 🧵

When I was in Rome this summer, somehow my trowel ended up in my carry-on. I was mortified when it was discovered in the TSA line, because I knew (1/?)

— new liver, same eagles 🦅 (@abigail_staub) October 18, 2022

show full post on front page

what came next. I was forced to toss it despite pleading with the agent, because the lines were so long I would’ve missed my flights had I tried to go all the way back through the checked luggage and security lines, which had taken me almost four hours to traverse (2/?)

at that point.

This meant that I was forced to part with my very first trowel, the trowel I had been gifted by my mentor John Dobbins during my very first field season, atop the Temple of Jupiter in Pompeii. It held an endless amount of personal significance to me and (3/?)

I was absolutely heartbroken and devestated.

So my partner started plotting to buy me a new trowel as a surprise for our anniversary. Because he’s a medical doctor and not an archaeologist, he didn’t know where to start, and, unbeknownst to me, tracked down and emailed (4/?)

John Dobbins to ask him what brand of trowel archaeologists use. But John had something else in mind. The two of them, with me still completely unknowing, schemed amongst themselves and met for coffee together to pull off the most clandestine operation ever. (5/?)
When I arrived in Charlottesville, my partner and I went downtown for dinner, and as I rounded the corner I found John there. I exclaimed, “Oh look, it’s John Dobbins!”, having not seen him in two years. I thought it was a coincidence and introduced him to Ty. Confusingly, (6/?)

he told me, “I already know Ty.” I was so confused, thinking maybe they knew each other through the hospital or some other community event in Charlottesville.

Instead, I found out that John was there to meet us for dinner. John sat down for soup with us (7/?)

and gifted me the most special gift I have ever received: the first trowel he got on his first excavation ever, at UMich. He told me that right as Ty had emailed him with his query, he had been thinking about how to rehome it, and the two of them had met to arrange a way (8/?)
to secretly surprise me. I didn’t want to take it at first b/c it felt like too much.
I was/am so utterly shocked and emotional. I am the luckiest person to have such a loving partner and I am so lucky to have such a kind, supportive and generous mentor like John Dobbins. (9/?)
The trowel in question 💓 I’m honestly too scared to use it right now because I want to treasure it forever but I am so grateful and shocked and wow. The two best people I know.
Image
As a final note— this happened in FCO, not the states! I erroneously wrote TSA vs the European equivalent when I wrote this and they did not seem to have a shipping option & forced me to make a split second choice that I immediately regretted 😭

==============================

From Albatrossy, a story in two parts:

A young Jays fan was overcome with emotion as he got to meet Marcus Stroman who returned to Toronto this week with the Cubs pic.twitter.com/cVZqmTV7AG

— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) August 29, 2022

Come down to field level before the game today. Tweet me when you’re there and I’ll come out! https://t.co/t8yVQjfpgQ

— Marcus Stroman (@STR0) August 29, 2022

======================

I don’t have an attribution to this one, if it’s you claim it in the comments. Meanwhile, I’m gonna get the tissues again.

Clayton Kershaw thought his press conference was over when he was surprised by a 10-year-old.

The child’s grandfather made a bucket list. On that list: meet Clayton Kershaw. That never happened. He died of cancer. But today Blake Grice met Kershaw. He feels his pappy with him. pic.twitter.com/K5KGcd5ozO

— Steve Saldivar (@stevesaldivar) July 20, 2022

==========================

And finally, from Albatrossy again, this just makes me smile every time I watch it. I don’t know if Adam already posted it, but it’s worth another watch:

that's all great but did you ever liberate your own mama's village pic.twitter.com/wnZK97Mr72

— jabuttee – luxurious memes and takes (@jabuttee) September 13, 2022

And a little Great Dane love for you. I swear they missed me…just not right in this moment. LOL

May be an image of dog and indoor

And yes, before you ask, there is room for people on the couch, they know they have to move and tend to make a puppy pile to leave room for the bipeds.

Hoping this brightens your evening and gives you a bit of a reprieve.  I have to go apologize to the cats again….
