Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

The End of Innocence

by WaterGirl|  June 27, 20259:30 am| 142 Comments

This post is in: Breathtaking Criminality and Lawlessness, Grieving for Our Country, Open Threads

Not the usual morning fare, but nothing else is happening in the back room, and this has kind of been haunting me for a couple of days.

Thanks to the heads up from Scout211 a week or two ago, I set my Tivo to record all the episodes of Cold Case that TNT is running this summer.  One of the episodes was The End of Innocence, and they played this song.

The words of the song reverberated with me (for me?  in me?) on so many levels.

The one I’ll share with you guys is that the age of innocence for many of us in America ended with the election in November.  So many things that seemed like they would always be part of America – or would or never be part of America – it seems they went up in a puff of smoke.

Lyrics

Remember when the days were long
And rolled beneath a deep blue sky
Didn’t have a care in the world
With mommy and daddy standin’ by
But “happily ever after” fails
And we’ve been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers dwell on small details
Since daddy had to fly

But I know a place where we can go
That’s still untouched by men
We’ll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass waves in the wind
You can lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

O’ beautiful, for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They’re beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we’ve been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie

But I know a place where we can go
And wash away this sin
We’ll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass waves in the wind
Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair spill all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

Who knows how long this will last
Now we’ve come so far, so fast
But, somewhere back there in the dust
That same small town in each of us
I need to remember this
So baby give me just one kiss
And let me take a long last look
Before we say goodbye

Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

This post is in: Open Threads, Thank You For Your Attention To This Matter

I’ve transited through four countries since June 19th and I am not quite certain what time or day it is, but sources converge on it being Friday morning UK time.

Just going to throw up an open thread featuring this very amusing post by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA):

Speaking His Language

I am almost through my work backlog and will have more to say later about my first, very brief, visit to the US during Trump II. Meanwhile, good morning or whatever; talk amongst yourselves.

Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" is absolutely bombing with the American public
It's quite spectacular just how unpopular the President's flagship bill is
usapolling.substack.com/p/trumps-big…

— Polling USA (@usapolling.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 4:35 PM

As Trump tries to push his One Big Beautiful Bill through Congress, the American people don’t seem particularly thrilled about what it entails. Polling from several firms reveals that Americans are broadly opposed to the bill, as even the most favorable poll still shows strong opposition.

Late Night Open Thread 23

A Fox News poll conducted by Beacon and Shaw found that 38% of Americans support the bill, while 59% oppose it. Support only declines from there, as YouGov reports 35% in favor, while Quinnipiac and Pew Research both found just 29% support.

Three of the four polls show opposition to the bill above 50%, except for Pew, which still finds 49% opposed to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act…

What’s especially notable is that Republicans aren’t uniformly in support of the bill, as one might expect. Support among Republicans ranges from a high of 73% to a low of 56%, suggesting many on the right aren’t sold on the bill’s contents.

Independents are firmly against it, with opposition ranging from 51% to 73%. Among Democrats, support never climbs above 10%…

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 11:53 AM

With the President’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” there’s been a general assumption. It’s super, super unpopular. And, also, it doesn’t matter. It’s going to pass anyway. That assumption is very likely true. Perhaps they’ll hit some speed bumps that prevent the bill from passing in time for July 4th, as Trump wants and has demanded. But these kinds of bills tend to be “failure is not an option” type affairs. You have obstacles but they get crumpled like things that go under a steam roller or mashed up in an industrial trash compactor. That’s particularly the case in Trump’s second term, where hints of the old ungovernable GOP caucus get flattened when word comes from Trump that it’s over. But here we see again the central tension point of the Trump presidency: he owns, dominates and controls everything but public opinion.

That much of it is almost conventional wisdom at this point. The bill thing is really, really unpopular. Even the inside-DC sheets say as much. So Republicans are starting to do something we’re used to seeing Democrats do with some of their more aspirational policies. Which is basically this: You think it’s unpopular. But that’s just because you’re not polling it right.

Famous last words….

… There are things in the bill that actually do have some public support: no taxes on tip income, a small but real tax cut for average earners (more on this in a moment), an increase in the child tax credit. But these are generally small, ancillary parts of the bill and the bill has already been defined as a mix of massive tax cuts for the very rich, draconian cuts to Obamacare and Medicaid and exploding deficits. That’s sticking because it’s the simple numerical reality of the bill. But it’s also sticking for an equally important reason: Even more than the first, the second Trump presidency has overflowed with the atmospherics of ultra-wealth and communicated clearly that it is government, to paraphrase Lincoln, of, by and for the ultra-rich.

You see it in the Cabinet, in the trooping of billionaires at the front seats of Trump’s inaugural, the world’s richest man given two or three months to actually run the government by himself. Trump critics get lost in the doomerist plasma of “Nothing matters.” But these things do matter. The public is getting the impression that the Trump BBB is taking things from average families to give things to the ultra-wealthy not only because that’s what it does but because Trump’s been communicating in imagery for months that that’s what this White House is about.

And there’s one additional point that doesn’t figure into most of these conversations. People assume that there are massive tax cuts. They may go mostly to the super rich. But, people assume, they’re there.

Only they’re kinda not there…

Meanwhile, the rumours about Giorgi Gakharia’s exile seem to be increasingly credible.

His senior party member Dimitri Tskitishvili commented on the issue of Gakharia’s potential return from a lengthy trip abroad that “politicians aren’t very productive in jail.” 1/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 3:03 PM

Gakharia could face up to 15 years in prison since the Georgian Dream is forging a high treason case against him – Gakharia seems to have erected a guardpost near the Russian occupation line against Russian demands, and the regime now says that his actions led to the loss of 1 sq. km. territory. 2/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 3:03 PM

(To be precise, they say 1,000,000 sq. meters to make it sound massive).

Ironic, since the Georgian Dream has perpetually downgraded Russia’s creeping occupation of Georgia as “what do you expect, this is what Saakashvili lost, Russia’s just demarcating it now, this isn’t about us at all.” 3/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 3:03 PM

It should be noted that Tskitishvili’s remark about loss of productivity from jail is inconsiderate at best to the majority of democratic leaders in Georgia who chose to be jailed instead. 4/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 3:03 PM

I am not commenting on anyone’s choices, but some people in Georgia wrongfully assume that other politicians get months while Gakharia would be getting more than a decade in prison. 5/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 3:03 PM

In truth, all democratic politicians will have further cases launched against them, as it’s already happening against Gvaramia, Khazaradze, Melia, etc. 6/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 3:03 PM

As for the general public impact of Gakharia’s exile, I suppose it’s minimal: his supporters would mostly say that he’s making the right choice, while most opponents never really considered him fully against the regime to begin with. 7/7.

Meloni tells Trump US must show ‘same determination’ on Ukraine as with Iran #Ukraine

— AmplifyUkraine 🔱🇺🇦 (@amplifyukraine.eu) June 26, 2025 at 2:31 AM

From The Kyiv Independent:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told U.S. President Donald Trump that the determination shown by the U.S. toward Iran should also be applied to ending Russia’s war against Ukraine, she said on June 25 on the sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague.

Meloni, a close Trump ally and the only European leader invited to his 2025 inauguration, welcomed the recently announced ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

She emphasized that sustained commitment is also needed in Ukraine, where Russian President Vladimir Putin last week declared “all of Ukraine is ours.”

“I spoke about this with President of the United States Donald Trump, to whom I said the same determination is needed to achieve two other important ceasefires,” Meloni said. “One in Ukraine, where Russia seems unwilling to take any steps forward, and one in Gaza.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Trump during the summit, held amid concerns over waning U.S. support for Kyiv. Unlike in 2024, this year’s communique did not directly condemn Russia’s invasion, a shift that underscores changing political dynamics within the Alliance.

The leaders reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s defense, saying national contributions toward Ukraine’s military-industrial capacity will count toward NATO’s new defense spending goal.

All 32 NATO member states agreed to a new benchmark, committing to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. Meloni praised the decision as a sign of unity.

“I believe the unity of the alliance and its willingness to strengthen itself is more important, especially in the context we are in, and is clearly a very important element,” she said.

Lithuania:

Lithuanian President Nausėda expressed doubt about a near-term end to the war in Ukraine, saying Russia is faking peace efforts.

“There’s no light at the end of the tunnel,” he warned, calling for a firm response through the 18th sanctions package at the European Council meeting in Brussels.

Pokrovsk:

You might find this picture morbid or eerie- odd in its own way, with unsettling details. Why is there a body on a door? Why is there no casket? And why is this happening in a lawn? It’s a short story – one that makes the distant, abstract feeling of war suddenly tangible:

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

2/ Another summer in the Shakhtarskyi District of Pokrovsk. But things have changed. The air…

The heavy, putrid air of decomposing flesh punches you right in your nose, says Yana – a young Ukrainian volunteer who is trying to help those in city. Pure Nightmare – she adds

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

3/ “You feel it in many apartment blocks the moment you step into the stairwell,” she adds

That day, a small portable drone scanner kept alerting to the presence of Russian drones, ominously circling above the town. It didn’t take long before a dull thud echoed on the streets

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

4/ That moment, a husband and wife were hiding in their apartment. They made the decision to shelter in separate rooms. The coin of fate – flipped by the fingers of a Russian soldier who launched the projectile – landed on the room where the husband chose to stay

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

5/ A human tragedy for his loved ones and family. Another episode of horror for the residents. A brief post on a Telegram channel for fellow citizens. And just another faceless number in the civilian casualty count for the rest of the world.. and not the last one

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

6/ There’s no way to move the body to the cemetery without turning those who agree to help into more dead bodies – the Russians hit any car headed there. There’s no time for ceremonies or words. Large gatherings aren’t safe. He must be buried elsewhere, before another strike

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

7/ A wooden door instead of a coffin. There are no services left in the city to do this job. Risking their lives, the neighbours do what they can and bury him near the road. Too dangerous, too risky – a grim, cruel, yet undeniable truth of war, brought to Pokrovsk by Russia

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

8/ After this summer day, there will be another. But with each one, the graves will grow, as the ghostly winds of Mariupol and Avdiivka spread through every part of the town, preparing the soil for new settlers from deep inside Russia to move into new homes – built on bones

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) June 26, 2025 at 8:42 AM

Axios:

House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday threw her weight behind a rapidly accelerating effort by Democratic lawmakers to limit Trump’s power to unilaterally strike Iran.

Why it matters
: Democrats are infuriated that the Trump administration postponed briefings on the Middle East that were planned for Tuesday, and that rage is helping to fuel what was initially a fringe effort.

– “Yesterday, the Administration decided to withhold intelligence … in a slap in the face to the Congress,” Pelosi said in a statement.
– “That is why I am supporting War Powers Resolutions which reassert the Article One powers of the Congress and ensure the Administration does not keep the American people and their Representatives in the dark.”

we went through like twenty years of people not realizing that Pelosi was the progressive wing’s representative in House leadership

Nancy Pelosi passed a universal public option in the House.
In related news, fuck Joe Lieberman.

She also passed the For the People Act twice in the House.
Thanks, Manchin and Sinema.

3 years ago, Congress voted to honor the officers who defended our democracy on January 6th with a memorial plaque in the Capitol.
Yet Republicans are ignoring the law and refusing to install it.
In its absence, we are hanging replicas—because heroism deserves more than silence.

Trump Orders Israel to “Pardon” Netanyahu

Trump is enraged about the leaked classified report that interrupted his victory dance over the “complete and total obliteration” of Iran’s nuclear program. [NYT]

A preliminary classified U.S. report says the American bombing of three nuclear sites in Iran set back the country’s nuclear program by only a few months, according to officials familiar with the findings.

The strikes sealed off the entrances to two of the facilities but did not collapse their underground buildings, the officials said the early findings concluded.

So, all that huffing and puffing, and it’s entrances blocked? Sad. Like Laura Loomer handcuffing herself to half of a double door at Twitter’s NYC office building sad.

This morning, Trump sent Kegsbreath out to insist that actually, it was TOO a total and complete obliteration, and if you don’t think so, that’s because you hate the troops. Also, wave more flags.

“How about we talk about how special America is?” — Secretary of Defense Hegseth castigates the press for “cheering against Trump” (he even mentions Fox!) and urges them to do unthinking propaganda stories about how awesome the troops are

Okay, that was weird and creepy and North Korea-like, but it was also ineffective because the smelly overgrown toddler was still throwing toys out of his gilded playpen this morning — after the scoldy Pentagon press conference:

Trump on truth social: "FAKE NEWS REPORTERS FROM CNN & THE NEW YORK TIMES SHOULD BE FIRED, IMMEDIATELY!!! BAD PEOPLE WITH EVIL INTENTIONS!!!"

But the tantrum was even weirder last night if you scroll down. Trump orders the judiciary of another sovereign nation to cancel an upcoming trial:

BREAKING NEWS…I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel, which has just had one of its Greatest Moments in History, and is strongly led by Bibi Netanyahu, is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great War Time Prime Minister! Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land. Anybody else would have suffered losses, embarrassment, and chaos! Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel, and the result was something that nobody thought was possible, a complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World, and it was going to happen, SOON! We were fighting, literally, for the Survival of Israel, and there is nobody in Israel’s History that fought harder or more competently than Bibi Netanyahu. Despite all of this, I just learned that Bibi has been summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long running, (He has been going through this “Horror Show” since May of 2020 – Unheard of! This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial.), politically motivated case, “concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges” in order to do him great harm. Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me. He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel. Bibi Netanyahu’s trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State. Perhaps there is no one that I know who could have worked in better harmony with the President of the United States, ME, than Bibi Netanyahu. It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu. THIS TRAVESTY OF “JUSTICE” CAN NOT BE ALLOWED!

Emphasis mine. What the fucking fuck?

Trump held a grudge against Netanyahu after the PM congratulated Biden on his win in 2020. But since Netanyahu let Trump in on his glorious victory over Iran (i.e., played Trump to obtain U.S. pilots to deliver costly U.S. ordnance), all is forgiven and Netanyahu is “a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel.” (More proof Trump has never read a bible in his life.)

Anyway, this is all so fucking weird. I don’t know what to make of it.

Open thread.
