Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

“They all knew.”

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

“But what about the lurkers?”

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

It’s Been Nearly Four Years With No Ads on Balloon Juice!

by WaterGirl|  June 18, 20254:35 pm| 42 Comments

This post is in: Balloon Juice, Open Threads, Previous Site Maintenance, Site Maintenance

Balloon Juice went ad-free nearly 4 year ago, and I know that I am not the only one who is really happy we did that.

Can we take a quick trip down memory lane so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel?

2021

If you’re the guy whose name is on all the bills, ditching the ads and losing $1,000 a month would have to feel a bit like jumping off a cliff without a net.

So here’s what it will take for me to feel good about having asked John Cole to do just that:

– $6,000 in one-time donations now – that would sit in an account, unused, as a safety net, to take the uncertainty out of the equation for Cole.

– no subscriptions, just recurring donations every month from those who can afford it, to pay for hosting and subscriptions etc.

– we need about $1,000 in recurring donations every month for that.

Safety net

Having the safety net has already helpful, but it’s been a long time since we’ve had a site fundraiser and for various reasons we have been whittling away at the safety net rather than putting up a site fundraising post.

So it would be super helpful if we could put some money back into the safety net, with one-time donations.

You can donate to the safety net with Patreon, Venmo, Zelle, and paper check.  Even PayPal if that’s your preference, but please mark it as personal / gift and not payment for services.

Monthly expenses

We need about $1,000 in recurring monthly donations for the monthly expenses.   Same donation options –  Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, and paper check – except I think Patreon doesn’t allow one-time donations.  (Please mark it as personal / gift and not payment for services.)

Fine tuning!

Not everyone can afford even $5 or $10 a month, but this is a community and those of us who can afford that have been helping make the site better for everyone.

If you have signed up for a monthly donation but you’re in a different financial position than you were when you signed up, please feel free to cancel your monthly donation, with our sincere thanks for having supported the site for nearly a year!

If you keep thinking you’ll set up a monthly donation, but haven’t gotten around to it, or if the timing is right for increasing your donation, this would be a great time to do it.

If you want to support the site with a one-time check, send me an email message I will send you Cole’s address.  (P.O.box)

A New Conversation With Senator Chris Van Hollen (Video), More Bad Polling For Trump, Next Steps After No Kings Day by Simon Rosenberg

It was a great weekend all. It’s Monday, and we are back at it……

Simon Rosenberg asked Senator Chris Van Hollen:

How important are phone calls to Senators and House members?

It does make a difference.  Sometimes it’s the only thing that moves the needle.

Rs need to worry more about anger from their constituents than about angering TACO Don.

He talks about 3 Republican votes in 2017 related to the Affordable Care Act.

War for Ukraine Day 1,209: The Cost

by Adam L Silverman|  June 17, 20259:34 pm| 8 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

A painting by Ukrainian artist NEIVANMADE. The words "NEVER AGAIN" are repeated over and over, from left to right and top to bottom, in a faded, washed out black against a white background. Red, the color of blood, runs and drips down across 2/3rds of the painting. "WHILE YOU TOLERATE TYRANTS" is written/painted in the bottom white corner below the three rows of "NEVER AGAIN".

Just a quick note on the Iran stuff: I’ve now reviewed all of Trump’s social media posts, plus his off the cuff remarks to the press on Air Force one. My professional assessment is: 🤷🏻‍♂️ and 🤦🏻‍♂️. Based reviewing all the posts and statements we appear to be not at war and at war, not involved in operations against and involved operations against Iran all at the same time. Off the looking glass and through the map.

The cost:

Kyiv:

There are no words for this kind of grief.
A Ukrainian couple watches the ruins of their home in Kyiv — destroyed by a russian drone. Somewhere beneath the rubble lies their son.

It’s a quiet betrayal, dressed in loud words of concern. Speeches about peace. Promises to end the war in 24 hours or by next month. Glimpses of hope, dangled in front of us — only to be withdrawn, as if we were plagues to be avoided.

1. A relatively quicker victory where the regime’s physical violence is once again unhinged on a mass scale that leads to another round of sharp deterioration on the ground and quick desertion by regime pillars; 2/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) February 7, 2025 at 6:24 AM

2. A somewhat slower victory where the regime physical violence is relatively limited and the society goes through a complete cycle of biblical cleansing, with new social contract & paradigms consolidating before the regime is forced to concede, rather than simultaneously with/after our victory; 3/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) February 7, 2025 at 6:24 AM

3. A very slow victory with initially largely suppressed street protests that launches a prolonged guerilla societal protest and economic instability due to the regime’s oppressive and economic inability to stabilize itself as a dictatorship. 4/

Reuters has the details:

WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) – The Trump administration shelved in recent weeks an inter-agency working group it had set up to formulate strategies for pressuring Russia into speeding up peace talks with Ukraine, according to three U.S. officials.

The effort, which was established earlier in the spring, lost steam in May as it became increasingly clear to participants that U.S. President Donald Trump was not interested in adopting a more confrontational stance toward Moscow, said the officials.

Despite pledging during his campaign to end the war in Ukraine on the first day of his presidency, Trump in recent months has grown increasingly frustrated that his push has yielded no breakthroughs. He has begun saying that the United States may abandon its efforts to broker peace altogether.

In light of that threat, the working group’s task seemed increasingly irrelevant, added those officials, who requested anonymity to describe sensitive internal discussions.

“It lost steam toward the end because the president wasn’t there. Instead of doing more, maybe he wanted to do less,” one of the officials said.

The death of the working group, the existence of which has not been previously reported, is likely to deepen European allies’ concerns over Trump’s at-times conciliatory tone toward Russia and his reluctance to express full-throated support for Ukraine ahead of a pivotal summit of NATO allies later this month.

ALL CLEAR!!!!

Russia’s air strikes ramped up in past weeks, each attack bigger and lasting longer than in previous months. Russia used to launch 100+ Iran-designed drones at Ukraine but now it’s launching 300+ and 400+ as production increases. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia fired 472 missiles + drones overnight.

— Christopher Miller (@christopherjm.ft.com) June 17, 2025 at 8:42 AM

Russia’s military is also employing new tactics, flying its drones higher than much of Ukraine’s small air defenses can reach, stretching Kyiv’s more limited resources and forcing difficult decisions over which drones and missiles to try to shoot down.

— Christopher Miller (@christopherjm.ft.com) June 17, 2025 at 8:47 AM

Then, once the drones reach their target area, many of them plunge downward at a steep angle that makes it difficult to shoot them down. They used to fly low and slow. Upgrades have allowed them to fly faster, at greater altitudes, and carry larger warheads.

Three Tech Questions Open Thread

I have 3 Mac questions / problems / issues that have come up this week and I haven’t had luck with quick searches.

You may have your own questions, too!  Or maybe you have more time than I do at the moment?

One.
I got a notice on Sunday that a new iPhone had been added to my account.  (Actually, I got that notice on all my laptops, iPads, etc.)  Except I didn’t add a phone and I didn’t turn on either of my old phones.  Any thoughts?

Two.
Yesterday, less than a day later, my MacBook Air suddenly started chiming on the quarter hours.  I did not install anything or change anything.

*solved by Another Scott! “Thanks, I think I found the culprit. It’s an e-card with a Christmas theme containing a solitaire game I like to play. I don’t know why the chimes suddenly started after months of using the app, but quitting it and restarting seems to have fixed it. Thanks for your help!”

Three.
I think I must make some unconscious movement on my laptop with my left hand – that causes a list of emojis to come up.  But I have tried all sorts of shit, FN, cal, option and command combinations, and I can’t bring it up on demand.  A quick google makes it sound like it’s something that just happens, for no reason?  But that makes no sense, and it’s always when I’m moving my thumb or something, probably soothing myself while reading all the bad news. :-)   A colleague that I was on a bunch of University committees with one day told me that he knew I wasn’t impressed by the candidate we were interviewing because I was rubbing my hand on the soft scarf I was wearing – he said it was the same self-soothing that his baby did with his blankie when he got tired.

*solved by Earl!  “oh, and cmd-ctrl-space makes the emoji picker come up if your cursor is in any type of textbox.”

If you weren’t marching, it was celebratory defiance. Big crowd.

If you were marching, it was all Palestine-all-the-time. Same person at every Denver rally other than the AOC/Sanders rally is basically hijacked by the pro-Palestine crowd. Heh heh, I talked with people on the march who all were saying the same thing. We’re all there for a shit load of reasons but you’d never know it when marching.

Diverse crowd in terms of white and Hispanic on the Capitol grounds and the parcel across the street. Lots of groups with tents, lots of people, again, very celebratory in 96 degree heat and full sun.

Anyway, here’s my photos if you want em. I’ll admit, that last one, carried by a woman, makes no damn sense.
