So Very Small (Self Aggrandizement Post)

by Tom Levenson|  April 22, 202512:55 pm| 122 Comments

This post is in: Authors In Our Midst, Books, Open Threads, Science & Technology

Hey, everyone…

You may have noticed that I’ve been conspicuous by my absence lately. (Narr: for “lately” read “the anthropocene.”) It’s been for a variety of reasons–some health stuff (now OK, thanks for asking); some mental health/self care as we confront the barbarism of the US today; and, more than anything else, seemingly inexhaustible deadline pressure.

Some part of that pressure is finally getting its release–which is the longwinded way of saying that the publication date for my new book So Very Small is upon us. One week from today (4/29) in the US; 5/1 in the UK. (UK info here.)

So Very Small (Self Aggrandizement Post
(Venice) Philosopher with book by Guercino

It’s good, I think. Early readers and reviewers seem to think so. Publishers Weekly and Kirkus both gave it starred notices, which is very comforting, and the blubbers  blurbers (I do love this autocorrect flub) wildly exceeded my imagination.* For example:

“So Very Small is very large and fascinating. Thomas Levenson expertly combines storytelling and big questions, most notably: Why not? Why wasn’t the germ theory of disease formulated 200 years earlier? Why, in general, are huge scientific discoveries delayed until they happen? This is exactly the sort of book that a literate citizen, keenly interested in science, reads for enlightenment, perspective, and fun.”—David Quammen, New York Timesbestselling author of Breathless

(Quammen is one of my writing heroes, so when he has something nice to say about my work, I kvell.)

One more:

“By peering through the lens of the modern germ theory, and our protracted battle with disease, Levenson has crafted a vivid, engaging, and timely reminder that we are not as omnipotent nor as clever as we often believe ourselves to be. So Very Small is a deeply researched and thoughtfully compelling exploration of our successes, failures, and precarious future with deadly pathogens.”—Timothy C. Winegard, New York Times bestselling author of The Mosquito and The Horse

I blush! There’s more like this at the Random House link. ;-)

As these two blurbs indicate, So Very Small is ostensibly a history of the discovery that microbes cause infectious disease. The story of the results that added up to germ theory is usually told as a tale of a compressed explosion of discoveries in the second half of the 19th century, but when I started on this project I found myself wondering about what happened to get to that moment. Microbes were first observed in the 1670s, after all–and yet it took almost exactly 200 years to get to the first conclusive demonstration that a particular bacterium lay behind a specific diseases (Robert Koch’s identification of B. anthracis as the pathogen causing anthrax, achieved in January 1877.)

As I tried to piece together why it took so long to get from point a to point b, I realized I was onto a bigger story–one that extended forward from the discovery years to the present day. I argue that the biggest obstacles to making the connection between microbes and disease wasn’t scientific. They were cultural, religious, and social. And those same roadblocks obtain (in different form but recognizably kin to the ideas that went before) still–and help explain why so much of the benefits humankind gained from the insights of germ theory are now at risk.

I have to say that when I started to work on this book (first discussion in 2012; work in earnest starting in ~2021) I had no idea it would be so timely. I wish it weren’t. But with RFK Jr., wreaking havoc on the US public health and biomedical research infrastructure, So Very Small definitely looks forward by looking back.

If y’all are interested, I’ll ask Watergirl if we can set up a post and/or Zoom book talk sometime after the pub date. In the meantime, if you’d like to hear more about it, the excellent Sean Carroll and I talked about it (at length, but what else would you expect from me? ;-) on his Mindscape podcast.

That’s enough. To make up for such naked self-promotion, I promise a good food/cooking post a bit later in the day (maybe tomorrow if the rest of the afternoon eats me alive.)

And with that…this thread is as open as a Hesgeth Signal chat.

*The question of blurbs and blurbing is a vexing one, and some publishers (and lots of authors) want to get away from the practice. Happy to talk about this issue in another post if there’s interest.

Image: Guercino, Philosopher with book, 1635

PS: one more thing. As is their wont, my US publisher, Random House, and my UK folks, Head of Zeus, chose radically different cover designs. Got a preference?

The World Is Burning, What Can We Do?

To recap some of the morning headlines …

  • The market is discovering that Trump might be crazy.
  • Where is the Tuft’s student who was unlawfully grabbed off the streets of Massachusetts by masked strangers and flown to Louisiana where she has been held ever since.
  • The financial world is emerging as a powerful and perhaps unexpected player in our opposition movement.
  • The Dow is headed for the worst April since 1932.
  • Stopping Trump’s Sabotage
  • $3 billion yanked from schools to help pay for Trump’s tax cuts

A breath of fresh air …

My favorite line in the clip: I haven’t seen anybody with a rap sheet that looks like the President’s.

I’m glad SCOTUS stepped in & stopped that plane from taking off.

Deporting folks with no record & no due process isn’t justice—it’s cruelty.

Meanwhile, the Republicans follow a convicted felon like he’s the Second Coming.

You can’t scream “law & order” while breaking the law at every turn.

Yesterday evening, we turned on the A/C for the first time this year. We can usually hold out to mid-May. But Bill worked outside all day in unseasonably high temps and then came home and tended the garden (lovely little tomatoes are already forming — yay!).

Small green tomatoes

When Bill learned that I intended to bake a pizza for supper, he shut the windows and doors and flipped on the thermostat. Bill is usually far more heat tolerant than I am and less willing to endure a chill, even though he’s from Buffalo and I’m a Floridian. So it was surprising that he blinked first this year. (The pizza was fabulous, by the way.)

Before sunset, we saw deer crossing the river, which, after flooding us out for a month last fall, is currently at the lowest level we’ve ever seen. Here’s one of the deer:

Tuesday Morning Open Thread 24

Temperatures are still dropping to the mid-60s overnight, so I opened the doors and windows again at about 10 o’clock. Later, I was chilly while reading on the sofa, so I snuggled under a fleece throw and got so comfy that I nodded off.

Badger woke me up by stealing the blanket. He stood on a loose end of it and dug at it with his front paws until he’d gathered the whole damn thing up into a ball. Then he stomped around in a circle on it until he formed a fleece nest.

The little bastard! That was my cue to hit the sack, but the usual insomnia kicked in, and here I am, doom-scrolling before sunrise.

***

Speaking of doom-scrolling, The Wall Street Journal sounds kind of alarmed in this article (gift link):

Dow Headed for Worst April Since 1932 as Investors Send ‘No Confidence’ Signal

The Trump rout is taking on historic dimensions.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed almost 1,000 points on Monday and is headed for its worst April performance since 1932, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The S&P 500’s performance since Inauguration Day is now the worst for any president up to this point in data going back to 1928, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

Worries about trade restrictions and the prospect of President Trump firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell have investors bracing for greater losses ahead. Corporate earnings reports are rolling in, along with executives’ tariff-dented outlooks for the months ahead. Few think the administration’s negotiations with trade partners will yield results soon enough to ease the strain.

Meanwhile, counterweights that usually strengthen when stocks fall—such as government bonds and the U.S. dollar—are also under pressure, leaving investors with few havens to wait out the storm.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

***

In other news, this is so fucking cruel: (NYT gift link)

The Department of Homeland Security denied Mahmoud Khalil permission to attend the birth of his first child, who was delivered at a New York hospital on Monday, according to emails reviewed by The New York Times.

Instead, Mr. Khalil experienced the birth by telephone from Jena, La., more than 1,000 miles from the hospital where his wife, Dr. Noor Abdalla, gave birth to a son. It is unclear when he will be able to see the baby.

Mr. Khalil, a legal permanent resident who was a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on the Columbia University campus, has been detained in Louisiana for more than a month. On Sunday morning, shortly after Dr. Abdalla went into labor, Mr. Khalil’s lawyers requested a two-week furlough so that he could attend the birth.

This act of pointless malice to punish a man for constitutionally protected speech was signed off on by a Trump ICE lackey in Louisiana — a woman who was involved in the disgraceful family separation policy during the shitgoblin’s first term. But ultimately, it’s on Marco Rubio, who calls himself a Christian. Fuck him, and fuck every senator who voted to confirm him, which is all of them.

Overnight Open Thread: From Tea Party to Drone Party

by TaMara|  April 22, 202512:30 am| 20 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Welcome, night owls and early risers. My posts might be hit or miss this week, I am staring at a very, very busy week. I’ll do my best as your fill-in DJ.

Let’s get the party started:

Okay, that’s a pretty elaborate history lesson.

Apr 18, 2025

On the evening of April 18, 2025, Boston commemorated the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s legendary Midnight Ride, a pivotal moment in American history with spectacular Drone Show about the history of American Revolution..

And then there is Elle Cordova, who is a genius wordsmith, and I could lose an entire day watching her short videos. Always clever and thought-provoking. Here she is with her take on Hank Green’s thoughts on the Big Bang.

Jul 15, 2023

A stitch with Hank Green (‪@hankschannel‬), turned into a nursery rhyme like poem about the Big Bang, the origins of the universe, and other cosmic questions.

Blue flower in a vase: Struggling doesn't mean you are failing

I should be in bed, but the AVS and the Nuggets are playing. Crazy. AVS in OT and Nuggets down by 2…

Wide open thread…

I wonder how many scaramucci’s Hegseth’s term will be, or if it will even reach a Friedman Unit:

The White House has begun the process of looking for a new leader at the Pentagon to replace Pete Hegseth, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly. This comes as Hegseth is again mired in controversy over sharing military operational details in a group chat.

The defense secretary is under fire after revelations that he shared classified information in a group chat with his wife, brother and lawyer, according to the official.

It’s hard to imagine they will find someone worse, but they can and probably will. Maybe Eddie Gallagher.

I should note that reliable sources have informed me Hegseth is going nowhere this is just a purge of staffers who do not agree with Pete, hence the smearing and return leaking about leaks.

Meanwhile, Mississippi is leaning into the new confederacy with… a celebration of the old confederacy:

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has declared April 2025 as Confederate Heritage Month in Mississippi, keeping alive a 32-year-old tradition that began in 1993.

A member of the Rankin Greys, a Sons of Confederate Veterans camp based in Florence, Mississippi, announced the proclamation in a post in the organization’s Facebook group on April 18.

A reminder that the confederacy lasted only five years or so. May the new one last four or under.

This made me laugh out loud:

There was something else I was going to talk about but in the background Joelle is watching American Idol while on the phone with her friend Buzz (who is basically her Tammy, if that makes sense- they’ve been thick as thieves for thirty years.) and this woman belted out the most excellent rendition of I’m Every Woman” and I kinda forgot what I was thinking about. Which is pretty clearly a solid sign it was not going to cure cancer or end world hunger. At any rate, she just got home at six, we had dinner, and now she is just relaxing and since she hasn’t had a moment to herself all day, I have fucked off in here to give her some space to get right in the head and chat you all up.

At any rate, tomorrow is another day. Soldier on.

War for Ukraine Day 1,152: Russia Unloads on Civilian Targets in Odesa

A painting by NEIVANMADE> In the center of the painting is a green swing set. It is over a targeting reticle with the red dot dirctly under the swing. Behind it on both the left and right are residential apartment buildings and trees. Above the swing set is an incoming Russian missile. It is red with a yellow "Z" symbol on it. To it's left if the caption "Russian "Ceasefire" in red. Below the reticle, in black, is Stop Child Killers!

It’s been a long, but good day, so I’m just going to run through the basics tonight.

Before we start, I do want to briefly touch on the death of Pope Francis. I checked the current make up of the College of Cardinals this AM, Pope Francis was able to create clear majority of left to progressive Cardinals during his tenure. Hopefully they’ll be able to fend off what we know will be an attempt to go full scale revanchist reactionary by the usual suspects. I don’t really have anything in this fight other than I am Catholic educated and don’t want to see the revanchist reactionaries get their way, but I think that Cardinal Pizzaballa, the Archbishop of Jerusalem, would be a good choice. There’s video at this link of an interview that Noga Tarnopolsky did with him over the weekend.

Russia unloaded on civilian targets in Odesa earlier today:

Russia attacked Odesa with drones, injuring at least three people. Civilian infrastructure, houses, and an educational facility were damaged.

Russia, of course, is assessing their own genocidal campaign of bombing, droning, and civilian bombing campaign:

Putin says Russia will “analyze” moratorium on bombing civilians. Translation: stall, lie, kill more. Russia isn’t seeking peace—it’s buying time to keep slaughtering.

A Ceasefire – Real and Lasting – Must Be the First Step Toward a Secure and Enduring Peace – Address by the President

21 April 2025 – 21:35

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today has been almost entirely devoted to working with partners – in various formats. We are preparing for meetings on Wednesday with partners from Europe – the United Kingdom, France, Germany – and from the United States. Meetings that could bring us closer to a ceasefire and a real, lasting peace. Now, after Easter, the whole world can clearly see the real issue – the real reason why the hostilities continue. Russia is the source of this war. It is from Moscow that a real order must come for the Russian army to cease fire. And if there is no such firm Russian order for ceasefire – then there is no ceasefire. Indeed, there were no air raid alerts on Easter, and some sectors of the frontline remained quiet. This proves it is possible – it’s possible when Russia chooses to reduce the killing. But even so, this Easter, there were still Russian assaults, strikes, and shelling, there were losses, including among civilians. Today, there have been even more Russian strikes. By just the middle of the day – by 1:00 p.m. – there have already been nearly three thousand instances of shelling, assaults, and other strikes. There were Russian missile launches, Shaheds, nearly ninety aerial bombs, the use of heavy weaponry, and drones. Russian attacks continue across the entire frontline. In the evening, I expect a new report from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi. That means Russia has rejected not only the U.S. proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire, which was made more than a month ago during the talks in Jeddah, but also yesterday’s proposal – the proposal to continue doing everything possible to maintain the ceasefire after Easter. All of this once again shows what Moscow truly wants. Nevertheless, Ukraine stands by its offer — at the very least, not to strike civilian infrastructure. And we expect a clear answer from Moscow. We are ready for any conversation on how to ensure this. There is an obvious, simplest, and most reliable way: stop missile and long-range drone attacks. That alone would automatically ensure the safety of all civilian infrastructure. A ceasefire – real and lasting – must be the first step toward a secure and enduring peace. Ukrainian representatives – both at the meetings held in Paris and at the meetings scheduled this week in London – will have a primary task regarding an unconditional ceasefire. That must be the starting point. Peace begins in silence. And only when there is genuine silence, and when people trust the entire negotiation process, can the fundamental issues begin to be resolved.

And one more thing.

I thank all our warriors who are defending Ukraine, who are holding the lines, who are making diplomacy possible. Strong diplomacy is the diplomacy of a strong state and a strong nation. To all our people who are standing in defense of Ukraine, to everyone helping, to everyone supporting Ukraine – thank you! Thank you! I am proud of our people.

Glory to Ukraine!

From UNITED24 Media:

A group of Russian nationals in Washington is planning to hold the first Immortal Regiment March in several years on May 3, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the “Great Patriotic War,” Ukrinform reported on April 21.

According to a flyer distributed by organizers among Russian-speaking communities in the US, obtained by the news agency, the event is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. local time in Lafayette Square, adjacent to the White House complex. From there, participants are expected to march down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the World War II Memorial in downtown Washington.

“We will march with an orchestra, songs, and portraits of our heroes,” the organizers stated in a flyer adorned with Soviet symbols and the black-and-orange St. George’s ribbon—a symbol that, since 2014, has become associated with Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

The event will also feature a “small concert” near the World War II Memorial in central Washington, according to the flyer.

According to the outlet, the organizers claim they have already received official permission. The press office of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, did not immediately respond to Ukrinform’s request for comment.

In December, 2024, the European Court of Human Rights deemed Ukraine’s ban on the St. George’s Ribbon lawful in its ruling on the case Borzych v. Ukraine. The case concerned the public ban on wearing the St. George’s ribbon in Ukraine, which came into effect in 2016.

I’ve written before about the Immortal Regiment and the cult that Putin and other Russian leaders have built around them over the past fifteen to twenty years or so. I’ll have more about this later in the week.

Back to Ukraine.

A rare Russian reconnaissance-strike UAV “Forpost” (worth approximately $7 million) was taken down by a Ukrainian FPV drone ($6,000) at an altitude of 4 km. The UAV, carrying two KAB-20 bombs, was targeting during the “Easter truce.” After being hit, it descended into Russian territory.

It is a drop on the sea for a city of over a million people. Normalcy in education will only be possible when Russia stops its attacks.

Yet every effort counts, and this is a start.

Pokrovsk:

Pokrovsk. Once a lively town of 60,000 now lies in ruins, with only 2,000 people still living there.

Toretsk:

Russian troops are using Chinese-made Type 56-1 rifles, which are copies of the Soviet AKM with a folding stock. One of these rifles was captured by Ukrainian forces near Toretsk — it was brand new and oiled.

Good evening!
The well attended protest in Denver this afternoon.  After the rally we marched from the state capitol through the heart of downtown, looping back to finish at the capitol again.  An excellent and engaged crowd!
Anyone else who went have any thoughts?
