Booker Watch Party (Open Thread)

Update from the early morning thread: Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) is still talking! He’s held the floor since 7 PM yesterday. I tuned in at about 4 AM and have watched on and off all day.

What’s particularly impressive is that Booker and the Dem Senators who tag in to ask questions (and give Booker a short break) are talking about real issues, not reading children’s storybooks. They’re highlighting the damage the Trusk & Mump are doing to Americans.

If Booker makes it to 7:19 PM Eastern, he’ll break the previous single filibuster record set by South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond when he yapped for an entire day and change to block the Civil Rights Act of 1957. It would be particularly fitting if Booker broke that record.

Will Booker make it 24 hours and 18 minutes? He’s a fit guy, and he has a huge heart, but the strain of holding the floor for so long shows sometimes. Damn, he’s trying though. Maybe he’ll make it. Either way, thank you, Senator Cory Booker.

The Booker Filibuster (Open Thread)

Senator Cory Booker started a filibuster at 7 PM yesterday evening and is still holding the floor. USA Today:

“I’m heading to the Senate floor because Donald Trump and Elon Musk have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the needs of the American people,” Booker posted on X earlier in the day.

“I am not going to stop speaking, I am not going to stop standing,” he said. “I am going to go for as long as I’m physically able to go.”

Once he took the Senate floor, Booker said the president has “inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy.”

“I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis,” he said.

Right now, Booker is tag-teaming with Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who’s asking questions and introducing topics to give Booker a break. They’re discussing immigration and private prisons. Here’s a live stream:

BTW, some critics on social media, including former senate staffer Gabe Garbowit on Bluesky, say this is all performative. They claim that if Booker and other Democratic senators were serious, they’d vote no on everything, object to unanimous consent and demand quorum calls — and keep doing that as long as Trump keeps breaking the law, which is theoretically forever?

Are those critics wrong? I don’t know. The circumstances seem to warrant a maximalist stance to me, but from my seat in the peanut gallery, the ways of the Senate are a mystery. Also, performative resistance isn’t nothing, inside Congress and outside of it.

Monday Night Open Thread

I was checking the headlines and saw that the stock market had its worst month in some ungodly amount of time, and continue to think that things are going to get a whole lot worse and we might very well see stagflation for the first time since the 70’s. The job numbers are going to be released soon and they will reflect not only the government layoffs but the uncertainty in the economy. Add to it all the tariff damage, the destruction of agriculture in the midwest that is so bad that they are talking about bribing those rugged individualist farmers with another bailout, the brain drain, and the boycotts on American goods, and we are going to be potentially seeing stagflation for the first time since the 70’s, all while the GOP carves up the social safety net for tax cuts.

At any rate, that made me think- this is going to be very tough on poor people, because this might be the closest we have been to an entire generation of poor kids raised on prepared and packaged foods, with no culinary skillsets at all. Not only that, things ain’t the way they used to be with grocery stores- all the little ones got run out, all the big ones don’t fuck with small towns, so it’s dollar general, gas stations and what not. If yer lucky a weekly walmart run. Depressing to think about.

Somewhat related, I think a lot of people overseason their food, especially things like chicken. Obviously unseasoned chicken is terrible to the point of being the butt of many a meme, but there are just as many people who layer on three lbs of lemon salt or whatever and then drown it in condiments. Chicken actually does have a flavor, especially if you eat something other than the breast, and sometimes there is absolutely nothing wrong with a seared chicken breast with butter, salt, and pepper. It’s ok to eat green beans with just salt and pepper. And broccoli. And so many other veggies. I guess maybe a lot of people are traumatized by canned vegetables or maybe their parents were bad cooks.

Another food thing- the European population is so small down here that it is a royal pain in the ass just to find basic ass pickles in the grocery. They have the bougie ones like grillo’s and other stuff, but you can’t find just a basic ass Mt. Oliver or Vlasic to save your life. I told Joelle I am canning a bunch of pickles this year and bringing them back. This is bullshit.

The real issue here is there is NO deal! All President Zelenskyy has done is agreed to negotiate a potential deal. What Trump and his team have done is continually up their demands on Ukraine. Regardless, nothing has been signed, nothing has been agreed to other than continuing negotiations. What we’ve got here is a pale underneath his burnt Thanksgiving turkey colored makeup, flabby, impotent old man flapping his gums.
