Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

No one could have predicted…

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Let there be snark.

In my day, never was longer.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

I really should read my own blog.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

“But what about the lurkers?”

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Republicans in disarray!

Booker Watch Party (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  April 1, 20252:50 pm| 198 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Open Threads, Politics

Update from the early morning thread: Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) is still talking! He’s held the floor since 7 PM yesterday. I tuned in at about 4 AM and have watched on and off all day.

What’s particularly impressive is that Booker and the Dem Senators who tag in to ask questions (and give Booker a short break) are talking about real issues, not reading children’s storybooks. They’re highlighting the damage the Trusk & Mump are doing to Americans.

If Booker makes it to 7:19 PM Eastern, he’ll break the previous single filibuster record set by South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond when he yapped for an entire day and change to block the Civil Rights Act of 1957. It would be particularly fitting if Booker broke that record.

Will Booker make it 24 hours and 18 minutes? He’s a fit guy, and he has a huge heart, but the strain of holding the floor for so long shows sometimes. Damn, he’s trying though. Maybe he’ll make it. Either way, thank you, Senator Cory Booker.

The Booker Filibuster (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  April 1, 20256:26 am| 190 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

Senator Cory Booker started a filibuster at 7 PM yesterday evening and is still holding the floor. USA Today:

“I’m heading to the Senate floor because Donald Trump and Elon Musk have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the needs of the American people,” Booker posted on X earlier in the day.

“I am not going to stop speaking, I am not going to stop standing,” he said. “I am going to go for as long as I’m physically able to go.”

Once he took the Senate floor, Booker said the president has “inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy.”

“I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis,” he said.

Right now, Booker is tag-teaming with Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who’s asking questions and introducing topics to give Booker a break. They’re discussing immigration and private prisons. Here’s a live stream:

BTW, some critics on social media, including former senate staffer Gabe Garbowit on Bluesky, say this is all performative. They claim that if Booker and other Democratic senators were serious, they’d vote no on everything, object to unanimous consent and demand quorum calls — and keep doing that as long as Trump keeps breaking the law, which is theoretically forever?

Are those critics wrong? I don’t know. The circumstances seem to warrant a maximalist stance to me, but from my seat in the peanut gallery, the ways of the Senate are a mystery. Also, performative resistance isn’t nothing, inside Congress and outside of it.

I was checking the headlines and saw that the stock market had its worst month in some ungodly amount of time, and continue to think that things are going to get a whole lot worse and we might very well see stagflation for the first time since the 70’s. The job numbers are going to be released soon and they will reflect not only the government layoffs but the uncertainty in the economy. Add to it all the tariff damage, the destruction of agriculture in the midwest that is so bad that they are talking about bribing those rugged individualist farmers with another bailout, the brain drain, and the boycotts on American goods, and we are going to be potentially seeing stagflation for the first time since the 70’s, all while the GOP carves up the social safety net for tax cuts.

At any rate, that made me think- this is going to be very tough on poor people, because this might be the closest we have been to an entire generation of poor kids raised on prepared and packaged foods, with no culinary skillsets at all. Not only that, things ain’t the way they used to be with grocery stores- all the little ones got run out, all the big ones don’t fuck with small towns, so it’s dollar general, gas stations and what not. If yer lucky a weekly walmart run. Depressing to think about.

Somewhat related, I think a lot of people overseason their food, especially things like chicken. Obviously unseasoned chicken is terrible to the point of being the butt of many a meme, but there are just as many people who layer on three lbs of lemon salt or whatever and then drown it in condiments. Chicken actually does have a flavor, especially if you eat something other than the breast, and sometimes there is absolutely nothing wrong with a seared chicken breast with butter, salt, and pepper. It’s ok to eat green beans with just salt and pepper. And broccoli. And so many other veggies. I guess maybe a lot of people are traumatized by canned vegetables or maybe their parents were bad cooks.

Another food thing- the European population is so small down here that it is a royal pain in the ass just to find basic ass pickles in the grocery. They have the bougie ones like grillo’s and other stuff, but you can’t find just a basic ass Mt. Oliver or Vlasic to save your life. I told Joelle I am canning a bunch of pickles this year and bringing them back. This is bullshit.

That’s all for me. Hope you all are well.

War for Ukraine Day 1,131: You Actually Have to Have a Deal to Have a Deal

Bucha was liberated three years ago today:

Three years ago, when Ukraine liberated Bucha, the world witnessed for the first time what Ukrainians had always known: we cannot stop resisting the Russian invasion, for to do so would mean they will murder us all.

🇺🇦 On the third anniversary of the liberation of Bucha, President Zelenskyy, together with the First Lady, Ukrainian and foreign politicians, honored the memory of those who died during the occupation of part of Kyiv region.

“Today, we are in Bucha, where three years ago the world began to grasp the scale of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.” – Zelensky at the Bucha Summit, dedicated to the anniversary of the city’s liberation from Russian occupation.

Here’s President Zelenskyy’s full remarks at the Bucha Summit:

Trump decided to make a new veiled threat against President Zelenskyy and Ukraine:

“Zelensky, by the way, I see he’s trying to back out of the rare earth deal — and if he does that, he’s got some problems, big, big problems”

What problems, Donald? You’re going to cut off military aid regardless. You’ve severed ties with Europe and lost the leverage you once had.

If you want to blackmail people, you need to stop discarding your “card” so carelessly.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) March 30, 2025 at 10:34 PM

The real issue here is there is NO deal! All President Zelenskyy has done is agreed to negotiate a potential deal. What Trump and his team have done is continually up their demands on Ukraine. Regardless, nothing has been signed, nothing has been agreed to other than continuing negotiations. What we’ve got here is a pale underneath his burnt Thanksgiving turkey colored makeup, flabby, impotent old man flapping his gums.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

We Will Continue Working to Ensure That Russia Is Held Accountable for This War – And That This Accountability Is Tangible – Address by the President

31 March 2025 – 21:18

I wish you health!

I just spoke with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and thanked him for the support. We coordinated our steps – joint steps, our joint diplomacy, and the work of our teams to bring peace closer and guarantee security. We are preparing a meeting between our military representatives for the preparation of contingents. We appreciate the UK’s position regarding pressure on Russia – pressure must be strong enough to prevent the Russians from expanding this war. All the more so now, as Moscow blatantly makes a mockery of our partners’ efforts to advance a peace agenda – with constant new drone attacks and relentless, brutal shelling. Only through pressure can this be ended and Russia forced into peace.

Today, I also thanked Keir and all of the UK for the participation of a representative of the British Parliament – Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle – in the Bucha Summit, at the level of European parliamentary representatives. Partners came specifically today – on the anniversary of Bucha’s liberation from Russian occupiers. Today, together with the First Lady of Ukraine, the speakers of parliaments, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and the Prime Minister of Ukraine, we honored the memory of our people whose lives, tragically, were taken by the occupiers. Russian war criminals must absolutely be held accountable for all of this – and today, the summit participants were unequivocal on that: Europe will not forget the moral conclusions drawn from this war. It cannot be allowed for Putin, other Russian criminals, and the Russian state itself to be absolved of responsibility. It is simply impossible to normalize what they did in Bucha, in Mariupol, and in so many other cities and villages. We will continue working to ensure that Russia is held accountable for this war – and that this accountability is tangible. I thank everyone around the world who is helping.

Today, there’s a new defense package from Sweden – the largest since the start of this war – worth $1.6 billion. A significant portion will go toward weapons procurement and production. It also includes arms supplied from stockpiles. Thank you, Sweden! This will help.

And one more thing. We’ve planned our team’s diplomatic work for April – the Office, the Government – including negotiations with partners and meetings. Our priorities are clear – to protect our people and Ukraine’s positions as much as possible, to use all diplomatic opportunities to the fullest, and to work together with our partners – with the United States, with Europe, and with all others – constructively, so that peace can be achieved. And of course, to do everything possible to support our people, our state’s resilience, and to maintain all the necessary ties with the world.

I thank everyone who is helping! I’m grateful to all Ukrainians who are defending our country, fighting on the front lines, and working for Ukraine and its people.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also met with the heads and representatives of the parliaments of partner countries and the European Parliament:

As President Zourabichvili pointed out during her tonight’s address, the dictatorship stands on 3 pillars that our partners can help us shake:

3. Repressive resources.

Where people are at in Georgia (other than a rapidly escalating mix of Belarus and Chechnya):

1. The people are there – out in the streets, angry, fed up, confused, but stubborn and determined at the same time. After 4 months, nothing broke the protest, the spirit is as good as ever; 1/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

2. The portion of people who openly call for an outright revolution as opposed to any diplomatic language on new elections is increasing. However, what body of people could emerge as heading such a scenario is quite unclear and I’m not even sure if anyone’s actually preparing for it right now; 2/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

3. Tonight did not portray the democratic forces in a good shape. For many people, “well, we don’t have the opposition” is now a given, with varying degrees of how it affects the public mood. Some are somewhat disorientated by this, others just don’t care anymore and proceed stubbornly. 3/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

There were expectations that the President would announce something viable together with parties, which did not happen in public perception. 4/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

I am from the opposition myself and I cannot without permission comment on this in an effort to not harm the process, but there are two sure factors at play, which are universal, logical, and don’t imply any names: 5/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

One: If all other spheres of life are infiltrated by the regime, then of course so is the opposition – moreover, it’s likely that they would infiltrate the opposition earlier than all else; Two: Not everyone has the correct instinct or selflessness when it comes to countering a dictatorship; 6/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

In a good scenario, this is all a cleansing process that eliminates those who cause disruption or are otherwise weak. In a bad scenario… well; 7/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

4. I suppose that with the whole “prosecuting 🇬🇪 over 🇷🇺’s 2008 invasion,” the share of those who consider the Georgian Dream to be outright Russians is also increasing, because honestly the share of “neither Russians, nor Europeans” was disturbingly high lately for my taste & level of frustration. 8/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

This is good. If anything can end this dictatorship, it’s the anti-Kremlin DNA of Georgians. It’s always been the ambiguity and propaganda cover-up that helped them; 9/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

5. The regime has apparently learned not to get triggered by fireworks because violence mobilizes people more. In general, it seems like they did learn the Maidan lesson very well – there are limits to running over people too, which better not be crossed. 10/10.

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 7:30 PM

Meduza has the details:

President Vladimir Putin signed an order on Monday to draft 160,000 men as part of Russia’s biannual conscription drive.

According to the Moscow Times, this year’s spring draft marks Russia’s largest conscription campaign since spring 2011, when the Defense Ministry called up more than 200,000 men. It also marks an increase from last spring, when Russia drafted 150,000 men.

This year’s increase comes after Putin issued a decree in September 2024 to expand the Russian army by 180,000 soldiers, setting the total number of active servicemen at 1.5 million.

Russia holds conscription drives twice a year, in the spring and the fall. However, this is not to be confused with combat-service mobilization. Mandatory military service now applies to men between the ages of 18 and 30, in accordance with new legislation that came into effect last January.

This year’s spring conscription drive will run from April 1 to July 15.

That’s enough for tonight.
