Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

The revolution will be supervised.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The lights are all blinking red.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

People are weird.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Peak wingnut was a lie.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Looks like the House Ethics Committee report on Matt Gaetz will be released.  Let’s hear from America’s biggest man baby, the subject of said report:

[some whining redacted] House Ethics will reportedly post a report online that I have no opportunity to debate or rebut as a former member of the body.

In my single days, I often sent funds to women I dated – even some I never dated but who asked. I dated several of these women for years. I NEVER had sexual contact with someone under 18. Any claim that I have would be destroyed in court – which is why no such claim was ever made in court.

My 30’s were an era of working very hard – and playing hard too. [some bullshit redacted]

I was expecting “she sure didn’t look 17” but I guess the tactic of never admitting anything is the hill he’s going to die on.

Since we’re on the subject of alleged and convicted molesters who don’t live in the basement of a pizza restaurant, let’s check in with the Diocese of New Orleans, where a 93-year-old priest was sentenced to life in prison for raping a 16 year-old boy in 1975.  The priest decided not to apologize to his victims after his guilty plea.  His attorney explained that “his client had expressed remorse for his actions through his guilty plea.”  I don’t know about you, but in my opinion, the Catholic Church is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican Party.

Moving to Texas, here’s a long Washington Post story about a small-town police chief who worked at 8 Texas police departments in 11 years and was repeatedly accused of sexual misconduct.

A Post investigation identified 47 heads of law enforcement agencies who were charged with crimes involving child sexual abuse from 2005 through 2022. Three-quarters of them worked in departments with less than 10 cops.

I would also wager a fair amount that every cop in these little Texas towns voted for Trump and every other Republican on the ballot.

None of them drag queens, not a single one.

Seems like this has worked in the past, let’s keep it going! Democrats’ playbook to beat Republicans in 2 years: work with them now:

Democrats, who are already planning their comeback after being swept out of power in Washington last month, have said they’ll oppose President-elect Donald Trump and his allies when their values collide but are open to cooperation on a range of issues, including immigration, federal spending and entitlements. […]

“This is how these battleground Democrats are anyway, but I think it will manifest itself in, ‘Take me up on this offer, let’s go.’ And if you don’t, then, ‘OK, I can work with that, too,'” said one Democratic strategist working on House races. “I think for a battleground Democrat, it’s a win-win approach. You have the possibility of working on a bill and a law which you can say, ‘I delivered,’ or you create receipts to bring back to voters to say, ‘I kept on trying.'” […]

“The opportunity to work in a bipartisan way, to increase your own bipartisan credentials becomes very important,” said Dan Sena, the executive director of House Democrats’ campaign arm in 2018. “I just think it’s important at large for the caucus to pay attention to the fact that ultimately, in two years from now, the Republican trifecta is going to get a thumb up or a thumb down from the country, and that’s ultimately going to dictate who has control of House.”

“If I were the Democrats at large,” Sena added, “I would be pretty aggressive in holding the Republicans and then the Trump administration accountable.”

How can you expect voters to interpret the whipsaw from claims that Republicans want fascist government, to “we’re going to aggressively work with these guys”? How do you hold them accountable when the bills you’re going to pass on a bipartisan basis are almost certain to have poison in them for the people that we’ve said we want to protect? I don’t get it. This is especially true in the face of news like Trump planning to go after progressive non-profits, ICE already feeling its oats by deporting a woman with newborn twins (born in the US), and Bobby Polio Jr ready to ban all vaccines.

Ro Khanna is again quoted in the piece, and the reason why he’s quoted is because there’s a lot of silence on the Democratic side and he’s ready to fill the media vacuum. For example, the only example of pushback on Bobby Polio that I’ve found is Elizabeth Warren. Good for her.

The great Aimee Mann again has some wisdom for Democrats mentioned in this piece: it’s not going to stop until you wise up.

Another noxious perennial — the GOP refusing to pay the country’s bills. Glass half full:

Congressional leaders have unveiled a stopgap spending bill that will keep the federal government funded through March 14 and provide more than $100 billion in emergency aid to help states and local communities recover from Hurricanes Helene and Milton and other natural disasters.

The measure would prevent a partial government shutdown set to begin after midnight Friday. It would kick final decisions on this budget year’s spending levels to a new Republican-led Congress and President-elect Donald Trump. The continuing resolution generally continues current spending levels for agencies.

Passage of the measure is one of the final actions that lawmakers will consider this week before adjourning for the holidays and making way for the next Congress. It’s the second short-term funding measure the lawmakers have taken up this fall as they struggled to pass the dozen annual appropriations bills before the new fiscal year began Oct. 1, as they typically do.

The bill will provide $100.4 billion in disaster relief, with an additional $10 billion in economic assistance for farmers struggling with low commodity prices and high input costs…

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the agreement was “free of cuts and poison pills,” and would provide money for Democratic priorities like child care, workforce training and job placement.

“With this agreement, we are now on our way to avoiding a government shutdown,” Schumer said…

show full post on front page

President Joe Biden has sought about $114 billion in disaster aid, submitting a $99 billion request in November, telling lawmakers the funding was “urgently needed.” The administration subsequently updated its request to include funding to repair federal facilities damaged due to natural disasters.

The largest share of the money, about $29 billion, will go to the main disaster relief fund at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The fund helps with debris removal, repairing public infrastructure and providing financial assistance to survivors. About $21 billion goes to help farmers who have experienced crop or livestock losses.

Another $8 billion will go to help rebuild and repair highways and bridges in more than 40 states and territories. And some $12 billion would go toward helping communities recover through block grants administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. About $2.2 billion would go to low-interest loans for businesses, nonprofits and homeowners trying to rebuild after a disaster.

“While this is not the legislation I would have written on my own, it is a strong, bipartisan package that provides the resources communities urgently need to recover,” said Sen. Patty Murray, the Democratic chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Congress is expected to pass the measure just before another shutdown deadline. House Republicans generally give lawmakers 72 hours to review text of the legislation, which would push a vote on final passage to Friday if they follow through on that rule. The Senate is not known for acting speedily, but many lawmakers are anxious to adjourn for the year and make way for the next Congress…

The GOP Tantrum Caucus, needless to say, has Big Feelings about this. Per the Hill, friend to all GOP tantrums, “House Republicans fume at Speaker Johnson over handling of CR: ‘A total dumpster fire’”

House Republicans are fuming at Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) handling of an end-of-year measure to extend government funding until March, saying it is more like a sprawling omnibus — which they abhor — than a simple temporary funding measure…

“It’s not a CR, which is a continuation of the budget. It’s turning into an omnibus,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said.

The final text of the measure has not yet been released, as congressional leaders work through the remaining hangups ahead of Friday’s funding deadline. But as the package begins to come into clear focus, Republicans of all stripes — including hard-line conservatives, committee chairs and moderates — are hammering away at Johnson for its contents, the process he followed to craft it, and how he plans to bring it to the floor for a vote.

“It’s a total dumpster fire. I think it’s garbage,” said Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus. “This is what Washington, D.C., has done. This is why I ran for Congress, to try to stop this. And sadly, this is happening again.”

“We get this negotiated crap, and we’re forced to eat this crap sandwich,” echoed Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), another Freedom Caucus member. “Why? Because freaking Christmas is right around the corner. It’s the same dang thing every year. Legislate by crisis, legislate by calendar. Not legislate because it’s the right thing to do.”…

The gripes are not just coming from hard-line conservatives. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), who represents a district won by President Biden in 2020 and Vice President Harris last month, stood up during the GOP conference meeting and told Johnson the government funding process has not been member-driven, according to a source in the room.

“Lawler just went to the microphone and he said, ‘This is no way to due process. … This is bulls‑‑‑,’” the source said. “He’s like, ‘Look, why are you telling me, if I want something I need to go talk to [Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer], and [House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries] hasn’t blessed this.’”

“He literally said, ‘because I’m not a f‑‑‑ing Democrat,’” the source added. “He said, you know, I should be able to go move the concerns and priorities for my district without having to go talk to these guys. He said it hasn’t been a member-driven process.”…

The broad frustration with the end-of-year package from across the conference is putting Johnson in a precarious position as he aims to remain Speaker next year with an even slimmer House GOP majority than what he has now. A key indicator that his Speakership is on the ropes would be if a majority of House Republicans oppose the CR.

Asked what the CR means for Johnson’s future — an implicit nod to the looming Speaker vote — Burlison, a Freedom Caucus member, told reporters, “Personally, I’m disappointed.”

“I think that he can do better,” he added. “He can communicate better. The fact that we haven’t seen the language today and we’re supposed to vote on it this week is unacceptable.”…

Coda: Everybody put on their suprised face!

At a time of heightened political division, Americans’ confidence in their country’s judicial system and courts dropped to a record low this year, according to a new Gallup poll. https://t.co/JxDhpOJVRO

War for Ukraine Day 1,028: Russian General Go Boom

Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, targeted and killed a Russian general in Moscow this morning.

Latest: A Ukrainian intelligence official with direct knowledge of the attack told me that the security service of Ukraine, the SBU, was behind the killing of Kirillov and his assistant. “Kirilov was a war criminal and a completely legitimate target,” the official said. www.ft.com/content/ccb1…

From The Financial Times:

A top Russian general accused of using chemical weapons in the invasion of Ukraine has died after a bomb went off at the entrance to his home in Moscow early on Tuesday, investigators said, killing him and his assistant.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, a major crimes unit, said Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the military’s nuclear, chemical and biological defence forces, had died in an explosion caused by a bomb placed on a scooter.

Kirillov is the most prominent military officer to be assassinated since Russia began its full-scale of invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Ukraine’s SBU security service had a day earlier put out a “notice of suspicion” — essentially a warrant — for Kirillov over alleged “war crimes committed” against Kyiv’s forces.

A Ukrainian intelligence official with direct knowledge of the attack told the Financial Times that the SBU was behind the killing.

“Kirillov was a war criminal and a completely legitimate target, as he gave orders to use banned chemical weapons against the Ukrainian military,” the official said. “Such an inglorious end awaits all who kill Ukrainians. Retribution for war crimes is inevitable.”

The official said the scooter carrying the explosives had been detonated when Kirillov and his assistant, identified in Russian media as Ilya P, were near the entrance of a house on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow where the driver had come to take the general to work.

The bomb on the scooter contained between 100 and 300 grammes of TNT, according to Russian news outlets, citing sources in the investigation.

The SBU’s statement on Monday said Kirillov was “responsible for the mass use of banned chemical weapons by the Russians against the defence forces on the eastern and southern fronts of Ukraine”.

It blamed him for “more than 4,800 cases of the enemy’s use of chemical munitions [that] have been recorded since the beginning of the full-scale war”.

Justin, There's No Answer 1
This is a real picture of Claudia Sheinbaum addressing a military academy graduation.  Maybe Trump’s jealous?

Well, things aren’t going so great for Justin Trudeau.  Yesterday, his deputy PM and finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned.  This is a big deal — she was a key advisor and member of his cabinet.  She wrote him a letter.

“For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada,” said Freeland in a letter to the prime minister.

“Our country today faces a grave challenge. The incoming administration in the United States is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including a threat of 25% tariffs.

“We need to take that threat extremely seriously.”

Freeland wrote that Canada needs to keep its “fiscal powder dry today” so they have the reserves for a “coming tariff war”.

She warned Trudeau that “costly political gimmicks” need to be done away with as they can make Canadians doubt whether the government understands the “gravity of the moment”.

“That means pushing back against ‘America First’ economic nationalism with a determined effort to fight for capital and investment and the jobs they bring. That means working in good faith and humility with the Premiers of the provinces and territories of our great and diverse country, and building a true Team Canada response.”

Trudeau apparently wanted to replace her with Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada, and she didn’t want to roll over and give someone else her job.

Anyway, Trump decided to double-down on shitting on Canada when he heard the latest:

“The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau,” Trump posted on his site, Truth Social.

“Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!”

Ever since Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago, kissed up, and had his picture taken with Trump, Trump has been making dominance displays, proposing to annex Canada and make it our 51st state.

Tellingly, Trump has not gone after Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico.  She did not go to Mar-a-Lago, and as far as I know, has only had one phone call with Trump since the election.  Here’s what she said about Trump calling Mexico a state:

Asked on Monday about Trump’s suggestion that Mexico should become a state of the United States due to the trade imbalance between the two countries, Sheinbaum expressed her desire to cease “dialogue” with the former and future U.S. president “through the media.”

On Tuesday, she explained that what she meant was that her government won’t respond to every “declaration” made by Trump with a public statement of its own. […]

Sheinbaum said Tuesday that her government will “always” defend Mexico as a “free, sovereign and independent country” in the face of insults, accusations and attacks, but emphasized that “everyone has a different way of communicating.”

“This question of entering into permanent dialogue … [by responding to] every statement that is made [by Trump], I don’t think that helps us in the bilateral relationship, right?” she said.

She’s also been quite vocal about the US role in Mexican cartel violence in Sinaloa.

I post on this a fair amount, but I think Claudia is playing it a lot smarter than Justin.  She’ll probably have her time in the barrel, but not capitulating and flying to Mar-a-Lago was the smart move, and picking and choosing which bullshit provocations merit a response is also wise.

(Oddly enough, the President of Mexico does not have an airplane.  AMLO sold the 787 that Enrique Peña Nieto bought when he was in office.  Claudia flew economy to the G20 meeting in Rio last month.)

It’s Cosplay All the Way Down

First, this guy (state senator from Pennsylvania) is dumb and funny:

It's Cosplay All the Way Down 2

He now says this was a “joke” which is what all unfunny Republicans say when they’re caught saying something dumb, racist, sexist, abusive or (fill in the blank with a bad thing).

Second, MTG and the real point of this post:

It's Cosplay All the Way Down 3

This be the verse:

  1. I have a shiny toy, it kills and destroys.
  2. There aren’t many uses for my shiny toy, so I have to dream some up.
  3. To dream those up, I need to imagine a world where I, a privileged member of one of the most privileged groups on earth, is threatened.
  4. Then I can talk about using my shiny toy to attack imaginary threats.  It makes me feel better about my investment and bothers other people because my shiny toy is really fucking dangerous, especially in my incompetent/crazy hands.

One of the rentals where we stayed in the Denver area last year overlooked the garage of a serious StarWars cosplayer.  It was just wall-to-wall stormtrooper regalia —  the very definition of a harmless hobby.  Unfortunately, the cosplay that the MTGs of this country have chosen uses killing machines instead of replicas of blasters, so now we have to give a shit about it.
