Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

One technique Repubs use to undermine government is to gain control of it by complaining about public spending since lots of people resent paying taxes. Then, they redirect tax dollars to rich and connected Repubs, starving public programs of funds. Then, they point out that those broke-ass programs suck since they don’t serve the public. Then, they use that twisted logic to justify further cuts that benefit themselves and their cronies.

This scam has been operating all my life in the county where I live, which went for Trump by around 75% in 2020 and 2024 and in which no Democrat holds any elective office and hasn’t for as long as I can remember. I’m currently experiencing how that plays out in real life in an incredibly annoying way.

Our property was flooded after the two hurricanes, and since our water is supplied by a well that was underwater for a few weeks, we don’t know if it’s safe to drink or not. We’ve been using bottled water ever since we got home, which is expensive and a pain in the ass.

I contacted the county health department to find out how to get our well water tested. A woman in environmental services there said the county used to test residents’ water samples but “the state took that away” several years ago. She said now testing is done through state-certified private labs and referred me to the closest one, which is more than 30 miles away.

When I called, the private lab folks told me to drive to their facility (60-mile roundtrip), pick up some testing bottles, go home and collect samples, return the bottles with samples to the facility and pay $50 bucks for the test. I will do it because I need to know if our water is safe.

Theoretically, I could get a commercial water service out here to test our well water, but that would be a pain in the ass because we’re so far out in the boonies that it’s hard to schedule such visits, and that type of company would have an incentive to sell me purification equipment I don’t necessarily need.

But hey, privatization leads to greater government efficiency, amiright? And Florida being Florida, I’ll eat my fucking shoe if the awarding of these state lab certifications is on the up-and-up. I guaran-damn-tee you someone is shoveling money at Repubs.

This is a single small example of how the scam works in a corrupt red state, which doesn’t allow counties to provide water testing services for residents but DOES allow donors to install a $45K golf simulator in the governor’s mansion. (I may have made this observation aloud at the county health department.)

But that’s small potatoes. This country is about to get a much more robust lesson in how Repub grifting screws taxpayers when the billionaire clowns in the Trump administration destroy public programs and funnel trillions into their own pockets. And lots of idiots who vote will conclude that the government sucks because it’s not working for them.

Tuesday Morning Open Thread: President Biden in Indian Country

President Biden has been the best president for Indian Country in my lifetime. He has shown us what true allyship looks like – unwavering, uncompromising, and unapologetic. @POTUS – from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. pic.twitter.com/YlvpvVUH5k

Biden creates Native American boarding school national monument to mark era of forced assimilation

— Associated Press 🤖 (@asssociatedpress.bsky.social) December 9, 2024 at 3:11 PM

Joe Biden’s Irish(-American) — we have a bone-deep commitment to preserving memories, even the most painful ones:

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — President Joe Biden designated a national monument at a former Native American boarding school in Pennsylvania on Monday to honor the resilience of Indigenous tribes whose children were forced to attend the school and hundreds of similar abusive institutions.

The creation of the Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School National Monument — announced during a tribal leaders summit at the White House — is intended to confront what Biden referred to as a “dark chapter” in the nation’s history.

“We’re not about erasing history. We’re about recognizing history — the good, the bad and the ugly,” Biden said. “I don’t want people forgetting 10, 20, 30, 50 years from now and pretend it didn’t happen.”

Thousands of Native children passed through the notorious Carlisle Indian Industrial School between 1879 and 1918, including Olympian Jim Thorpe. They came from dozens of tribes under forced assimilation policies that were meant to erase Native American traditions and “civilize” the children so they would better fit into white society.

It was the first school of its type and became a template for a network of government-backed Native American boarding schools that ultimately expanded to at least 37 states and territories.

“About 7,800 children from more than 140 tribes were sent to Carlisle — stolen from their families, their tribes and their homelands. It was wrong making the Carlisle Indian school a national model,” Biden told the White House summit…

During a dozen public listening sessions over the past several years hosted by the Interior Department, survivors of the schools recalled being beaten, forced to cut their hair and punished for using their native languages.

The forced assimilation policy officially ended with the enactment of the Indian Child Welfare Act in 1978. But the government never fully investigated the boarding school system until the Biden administration.

Biden in October apologized on behalf of the U.S. government for the schools and the policies that supported them…

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, whose grandparents were taken to boarding schools against their families’ will, said no single action would adequately address the harms caused by the schools. But she said the administration’s efforts have made a difference and the new monument would allow the American people to learn more about the government’s harmful policies.

“This trauma is not new to Indigenous people, but it is new for many people in our nation,” Haaland said in a statement…

The stories of federal Indian boarding school survivors are living history that must be preserved. Today, I announced new agreements and funding commitments to preserve these survivor stories and experiences and share them with the world. https://t.co/Xq9WGkaDXS

Today, we released our 10-Year National Plan on Native Language Revitalization. Our languages embody our indigeneity and our connection to the world around us. Together, we are charting a path forward to restore what assimilation attempted to steal. https://t.co/E4xi8TmxE2

— Secretary Deb Haaland (@SecDebHaaland) December 9, 2024

Important, and exciting:

At the 2024 White House Tribal Nations Summit today, Departments of the Interior, Education and Health and Human Services (HHS) released a 10-year National Plan on Native Language Revitalization, which outlines a comprehensive, government-wide strategy to support the revitalization, protection, preservation and reclamation of Native languages. The plan, a joint effort of the agencies, charts a path to help address the United States government’s role in the loss of Native languages across the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaiʻi…

“Indigenous languages are central to our cultures, our life ways, and who we are as people. They connect us to our ancestors, to our homelands, and to our place in the world,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. “This ambitious plan represents the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to address the wrongs of the past and restore what has been taken from us.”

“I always say: multilingualism is a superpower—and that includes Native American languages. During my time as Secretary of Education, I’ve been fortunate to travel through Indian Country and learn beautiful words in Oneida, Dakota, and Nakota languages. One thing was crystal clear: when young people reclaim their native languages, they reconnect deeply with who they are and where they come from,” said Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “But Native peoples have suffered from shameful policies that aimed to eradicate these languages and cultures for too long. I am hopeful that this national plan is a start to the federal government’s remediation of its participation in those policies. And I am hopeful we can all choose to keep fighting for a future where Native communities have the tools and support to keep their languages alive and their cultures thriving.”

“We use language to write history, share knowledge, map the future, and pass down traditions,” said Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra. “Investing in language revitalization strengthens communities and contributes to their resiliency. HHS is a proud and critical contributor to this coordinated effort and the benefits it will deliver.” …

Additionally, today the Interior Department is announcing a cooperative agreement with the National Fund for Excellence in American Indian Education. This partnership will provide $7.5 million in existing grant funding to BIE schools supporting the launch or expansion of immersion programs and create a network of educators and school leaders committed to Native language revitalization. This funding will help build a network of BIE schools committed to integrating Native language immersion and cultural education into their curricula, offering students the tools to connect with their language and heritage. Together with the National Plan for Native Language Revitalization, these efforts create a comprehensive strategy to protect, preserve and reclaim Indigenous languages across the United States…

War for Ukraine Day 1,020: War Without End

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is doing great. She had her one month post chemo appointment with her oncologist this morning and the vet was thrilled with how she looked, the bloodwork, the information about the walks.

Second, my sinus infection seems to be improving, though I’m still going to just run the basics tonight.

During his trip to Paris, President Zelenskyy told President Macron and the President-elect that Putin does not want the war to end.

From Ukrainska Pravda:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that in a conversation with his counterparts, French President Emmanuel Macron and US President-elect Donald Trump, in Paris, he emphasised that Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not want the war against Ukraine to end and must be forced to do so.

Source: Zelenskyy on Telegram

Quote: “I told both President Macron and President Trump: first and foremost, you will see – Putin does not want this war to end. Therefore, he must be forced. He can only be forced if Ukraine is strong. A strong Ukraine, in the context of any diplomacy, means a strong military on the battlefield. It means a strong army, weapons packages, long-range systems, including, of course, ATACMS, Taurus, Storm Shadow, and SCALP missiles.

All of this is critically important for us. And yes, it is exclusively for strikes on military targets, and we emphasise this.”

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Personnel Changes Have Been Made Specifically to Reboot the System of Training for Our Warriors – Address by the President

9 December 2024 – 19:36

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today, I held a meeting of the Staff. One of the key issues was the quality of training of our warriors. This is an area that requires significant changes. Personnel changes have been made specifically to reboot the system of training for our warriors. Oleh Apostol and Mykhailo Drapatyi will be responsible for this. Today marked the beginning of the relevant discussions at our Staff meeting. I gave instructions to prepare a detailed report for the next meeting of the Staff. Right now, a review must be conducted to identify what needs immediate change, what must be corrected, what should be added, and who else needs to be replaced. Everything necessary can be provided – both at the organizational level and in terms of funding. It is the quality of training that largely determines the effectiveness of our warriors in battles, and of course, the preservation of the lives of our men.

Today, there was a report from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi about the frontlines, the defense of our positions, all key directions, and the Kursk operation. My gratitude goes to all our warriors who are destroying the occupiers. There was also a separate report from Pavlo Palisa regarding the amount of direct funds allocated to brigades specifically for the additional procurement of drones.

A decision was recently made on the sum of these direct funds, but it’s now clear that the amount is still insufficient. I have instructed the Prime Minister to increase funding for the brigades significantly in the coming days.

Important international meetings took place today. Estonia’s new Prime Minister, Kristen Michal, paid his very first visit specifically to Ukraine. We are grateful for all forms of support – defensive, political, and humanitarian. Thank you to Estonia and to all the Baltic states. We discussed how to achieve greater results in defending our land and people from Russia – in defending our Europe. One of the key topics was equipping the brigades. Ukraine is grateful to France and President Macron for training one brigade, and we will now hold discussions with the French side about training a second brigade. Additionally, in Europe – specifically in Germany – the U.S. is now training a Ukrainian brigade. This is important. And we also talked to our partners, the Nordics, the countries of Northern Europe, that they, together with the Baltic states, could also prepare one more brigade. This will be a very tangible contribution to the defense of Europe. Of course, we also discussed upcoming events with the Estonian Prime Minister.

Today, Friedrich Merz, the leader of the German opposition, also visited Ukraine. We are thankful to Germany for leadership in Europe in the scale of the support and, in particular, its contributions to developing our air defense. Thousands of lives have already been saved thanks to the air defense systems and other weapons Germany has provided. We can do much more, and we are raising this issue at all levels. Today, several important topics were discussed. The first was an invitation to NATO. The second point is that I appreciate Merz’s position – it is both truthful and fair – that it is unjust and ineffective for Ukraine to fight with one hand tied behind its back. We need Taurus missiles, as well as other long-range missiles, to strike the necessary military – strictly military – targets in Russia. This is how we can end the war as quickly as possible. The weaker Russia’s military potential becomes, the sooner peace will be achieved.

Ukraine has presented the points of the Victory Plan to its partners, and all partners are well aware of them. Everyone knows the points, both geopolitical and military ones. And we believe that the countries whose decisions determine the issues of NATO and long-range weapons for our defense, as well as all those countries that finance the production of weapons in Ukraine must have a common stance and full coordination. Europe, America, and other parts of the world must stand united for security because there is no such thing as partial security. If there is Russia, which destroys the lives of others, it will always affect everyone. We must stand together. And we have been discussing exactly this kind of coordination, such a group for Europe, and we have been preparing it, and in the near future we will organize such a meeting of a coordination group for Europe. It is important that everything happens in unity. Our approach to this group includes, at a minimum, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland. We also hope Denmark and other partners will join. Political coordination that matters. Unity, which gives success. We all need real peace. I am grateful to everyone who helps!

Glory to Ukraine!

The US:

“We have made clear is that if (Ukraine) produces additional forces to join the fight, we and our allies will be ready to acquit those forces and train those forces to enter battle,” U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Dec. 9.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) December 9, 2024 at 4:55 PM

From The Kyiv Independent:

The United States is ready to take over the training of new Ukrainian soldiers and provide them with the necessary weapons if Ukraine changes its mobilization policy, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said during a meeting with journalists on Dec. 9.

“We have had conversations with the government of Ukraine about the security situation it faces in the East,” Miller said.

“Ultimately, the decisions about the composition of its military force are those are decisions that the Ukrainians have to make for themselves. What we have made clear is that if they produce additional forces to join the fight, we and our allies will be ready to acquit those forces and train those forces to enter battle.”

His comments come as part of a broader wave of statements from senior U.S. officials, amid reports that Western allies are urging Ukraine to reduce its minimum mobilization age from 25 to 18 in order to replenish its military forces.

Earlier on Dec. 4, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Ukraine faces “hard decisions” regarding further mobilization in its fight against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“These are necessary decisions,” Blinken noted during a press conference in Brussels. He emphasized that mobilization is critical for Ukraine, adding that while the country has the necessary funds and ammunition, it also requires more people to effectively repel Russian aggression.

Blinken also reiterated that every soldier that Ukraine mobilizes would have “the training and the equipment they need to effectively defend the country.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky has so far refuted Washington’s appeals. According to the president, partners have only provided enough aid to fully equip 2.5 out of the 10 Ukrainian brigades that Ukraine had requested support for.

The Baltic Sea:

⚡️NATO jets intercept Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea.

The F-35s, deployed under NATO’s eastern airspace monitoring mission, intercepted a Russian An-72 transport aircraft and an SU-24 reconnaissance aircraft.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) December 9, 2024 at 12:13 PM

The Kyiv Independent has the details:

Two Dutch F-35 fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Dec. 6, the Netherlands Defense Ministry announced on Dec. 9.

The F-35s, deployed under NATO’s eastern airspace monitoring mission, intercepted a Russian An-72 transport aircraft and an SU-24 reconnaissance aircraft.

Later, they were scrambled again to intercept a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft.

The Dutch F-35s escorted the Russian planes over international waters to the boundary of NATO’s airspace. “That is why our people are there: to protect our common airspace from Russian threats,” Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans wrote on X.

Russian aircraft frequently operate over the Baltic Sea without transponders or flight plans, actions often seen as testing NATO’s response capabilities.

In September, the Latvian Air Force reported that NATO jets intercepted six such Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea.

That same month, Latvia confirmed that a Russian Shahed-type drone equipped with explosives had crashed on its territory.

The drone, reportedly heading to Ukraine, entered Latvia from Belarus before crashing near Gaigalava parish in the Rezekne district, approximately 85 kilometers (52 miles) from the Belarusian border.

Germany:

German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, during a visit to Kyiv, confirmed his readiness to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles if he heads the German government after the elections in February 2025.

The Biden administration needs to bestir itself and get sanctions in place on Georgian Dream, its leaders, and the oligarch underwriting the party, the politicians, and the apparatchiks as soon as possible. Yesterday would have been a good day to do this.

Here’s a breakdown of the Russian butcher’s bill for September through November 2024:

Russia has quadrupled its missile and drone attacks on Ukraine this fall, according to WSJ

Between September and November 2024, Russia launched over 6,000 missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, a threefold increase from the previous quarter and a fourfold increase compared to the same period in 2022

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) December 9, 2024 at 8:14 AM

Russian glide bomb use down: Most probably due to the threat of ATACMS and Storm Shadow, Russian fighter/bombers have had to relocate to bases further away, resulting in longer flight times and fewer bombing sorties. Many lives could have been saved had US permitted ATACMS use in Russia earlier.

— Euan MacDonald (@euanmacdonald.bsky.social) December 9, 2024 at 5:33 AM

Note how the peak of the use by fascist Russia of glide bombs on targets in Ukraine coincides with the US giving permission to Ukraine to use Western weapons on targets in Russia. It drops off, peaks again, then drops off sharply. There is no such correlation with the imposition of sanctions, AFAIK.

Olenivka prison, near occupied eastern Donetsk, was a place of nightmares. Russian officials and their Ukrainian collaborators like Yevsyukov starved, tortured and murdered Ukrainian POWs in the facility, according to testimony from those who survived it.

That’ll buff right out.

From The Kyiv Independent:

A car exploded in Russian-occupied Donetsk on Dec. 9, seriously injuring two people inside, Russian state media reported.

The Russian Telegram channel Mash claimed that Serhii Yevsiukov, the former head of Russia‘s notorious Olenivka prisoner of war (POW) camp in the occupied part of Donetsk Oblast, was killed in the blast.

The claims could not be independently verified as there has been no official confirmation that Yevsiukov was killed in the bombing. Ukraine did not comment on the incident.

Yevsiukov was wanted by Ukraine on murder, torture, and war crime charges. The Olenivka camp, notorious for the torture and abuse of Ukrainian captives, was hit by an explosion in June 2022, killing over 50 Ukrainian POWs and injuring more than 150. Kyiv called this a deliberate Russian war crime.

Russian state news agencies reported that a Toyota SUV exploded in central Donetsk, seriously injuring two people inside the vehicle who were also family members. The man’s leg was torn off by the blast, RIA Novosti reported, without revealing his identity.

The explosion occurred on the side of the driver, the state news agency TASS reported.

The Mash Telegram channel later claimed that the man in question was Yevsiukov and that he was killed as a result. The second victim was said to be his wife, who is in a hospital in serious condition, Mash claimed.

Russia’s Investigative Committee launched a criminal investigation into the explosion.

Yevsiukov was one of the key figures in the Kyiv Independent’s investigation into the torture of captives in the Olenivka prison. He and his deputy, Dmytro Neiolov, were charged by Ukrainian prosecutors in July for violating laws of war.

Ukrainian authorities said that days before the explosion in the Olevnika prison, Russian occupation authorities singled out Ukrainian members of the Azov Regiment, who were captured in Mariupol and were awaiting a prisoner exchange, to a separate part of the prison building—the one that was destroyed.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said that Russia likely used a thermobaric munition to strike the prison. Russia rejected the accusations and instead blamed the explosion on a Ukrainian HIMARS strike, an assertion rejected by the U.N.

Velyka Novosilka, Donetsk Oblast:

Russian soldiers reached proper Ukrainian fortifications in the area of Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk Oblast and were shocked by the conditions.

“They’re really living it up here! Look at this bunker! Unbelievable! Trenches three meters deep. All kinds of food here, damn it!”

Part of the reason I’m so focused on the Democratic response to Trump is due to something Seth Moulton said in his interview with Jon Lovett on Pod Save America a few days ago:

This [slandering trans folk without rebuttal] was exactly what the Republicans were able to do with immigration.  I remember being on the House floor last year, and there were some people / colleagues running for the this position of Democratic Messaging like Committee Chair, so supposedly in charge of Democratic messaging for the House, and I asked one of the candidates how she thought we should deal with immigration.  She said we should not talk about immigration.  I said, well, I actually think a lot of people are concerned about it because it does seem there’s a real problem with the southern border.  She said, nope, it’s dangerous to talk about it because it’s used against immigrants.

The whole Moulton interview starts around 1:42 on this YouTube recording.  Now, is Moulton lying?  I doubt it.  He did a terrible job talking about trans people in his NYT interview the other day, and he takes some lumps from Lovett on that regard, but he does make the point that Democrats not responding on major issues where Republicans are making a lot of noise (like trans rights) is not good for the party.  His anecdote raises an important question about the Democratic leadership’s attitude towards messaging.

Now, when I write that the Democratic leadership has not responded to Trump’s interview, I mean almost the whole of the Democratic leadership has been silent.  I covered what was said on Sunday shows yesterday, and none of it was a response to Trump’s comments.  Jim Clyburn, who didn’t cover himself in glory yesterday with his talk of pardoning Trump, went on CNN today and compared Trump’s desire to jail the January 6 committee to the time when Jim Crow became the law of the land.  Adam Schiff stood up to Trump on X earlier today.  That’s two.  Are there others?  I’ve been looking pretty hard and can’t find any.

Of course, Liz Cheney was out with a tough statement.  That’s because she’s a Republican who understands what the fight is.

People got upset in the last comments about me posting Will Bunch’s crack  about sending the Democratic leadership to space, but if you’re not responding to at least one of the dozen bad things Trump said, and voicing the Democrat’s position opposing it, you might as well be orbiting the fucking planet for all the good that you’re doing.  If the person who was running for chair of messaging had the attitude that Moulton relayed, then we have a big problem to even have that person be considered for the position.  Messaging means relaying your message, not sitting in silence.

I’ll close with some good news.  Ken Martin, one of three candidates for DNC chair (the others are Ben Wickler and Martin O’Malley), understands the assignment:

Martin, the Minnesota state chair, says the party must invest “significant resources” in a comprehensive, granular mapping out of how different political demographics get electoral information, including via non-news sources. Martin also sees the information problem as directly linked to a Democratic brand problem, in which “the majority of Americans now believe the Republican Party best represents the interests of the working class and the poor.” As Martin notes, Republicans have been allowed to keep up a “constant drumbeat hammering away at our brand.”

“Because we’re not in these information spaces, we’ve allowed the Republican Party to define us,” Martin said. “We’re not defining them. We have to be present in every channel.” Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg has aptly termed this the “loudness gap.”

To counter it, Democrats must enlist an army of “trusted messengers and validators” in those spaces, Martin said, to “remind people who we are and what we’re fighting for.” Martin noted that during the campaign, Trump reached deep into various nonpolitical markets (as Ilyse Hogue details, Trump worked male-heavy audiences particularly hard). Democrats must find their own large niche audiences as a means to giving “people a sense that you’re one of them,” Martin said, adding: “It can’t be inauthentic.”

Importantly, Martin argues that the Democratic consultant class still remains too wedded to traditional paid advertising. During the campaign, some Democrats criticized the leading Super PAC, Future Forward, for spending too much on overly tested ads on network television. Martin declined to fault the group directly but said the party must reorient generally away from broadcast ads made by Democratic admakers.

This is the kind of attitude we need in our leadership, not the notion that we need to shut up about important issues where the Republicans are killing us in the media.

This is the latest on the hunt for the killer of the UHC CEO:

Police are reportedly questioning a man in Pennsylvania in connection with the New York City shooting death of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson.

NBC New York reported that the man being questioned on Monday was in or around Altoona, Pennsylvania – and had been found with a gun similar the one used in Thompson’s killing.

A separate report from CNN said the person being questioned was traveling by bus and had a firearm suppressor as well as a number of false identifications. Citing a senior law enforcement source, the New York Times reported that the man being questioned was confronted at a McDonald’s – and showed the same fake New Jersey identification that police believe Thompson’s killer presented when he checked into a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on 24 November.

This whole manhunt has re-surfaced a lot of hatred towards the police.  It begins with the disproportionate response to this killing versus the killing of others.  It continues into the lackadaisical search of Central Park that was on the news yesterday and roundly mocked on the social media I saw.  (The social media I saw also included this report that NJ State Police essentially stopped enforcing traffic laws after racial bias was found.)

Some of this is pretty unfair, of course — the killer took enough precautions that this wasn’t going to be an easy case to crack.  But when years of copaganda about how massive police budgets will help keep us safe bump up against the ugly truth of police incompetence, anger and resentment ensue.

JFC how broken does your brain need to be to say shit like this on the “liberal” TV network:

After convincing President Biden to pardon his son Hunter, South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn is now calling for clemency for Donald Trump. “If we keep digging at things in the past, I’m not too sure the country will not lose its way,” Clyburn tells MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart.

Clyburn is one of Biden’s most trusted advisors in Congress. I sure as hell hope Biden isn’t listening to him on this one.

I couldn’t find much Democratic pushback to what Trump said on MTP yesterday, by the way.  I guess the leadership of the Democratic Party in DC (until recently, Clyburn was Assistant Democratic Leader in the House) is too busy trotting out nonsense like this.
