We’re Not Dumb Enough to Listen to the Trash Talk, Right? Right?

by WaterGirl|  October 13, 202410:56 pm| 84 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads

Steady as she goes, BJ peeps. Steady as she goes.

Something like 3/4 of the polls that dropped this week are Republic trash polls, meant to direct the conversation, not to report accurately.  Ignore them.

Are we really going to let a bullshit article from Politico (but I repeat myself) make us worry or panic about the state of the race?  Ignore them.

Bullshit stories in the FTFNYT?  Ignore them.

We’re gonna get nervous because of something Saturday Night Live put in their Cold Open?  Ignore that.

It’s the political equivalent of trash talk, and we are idiots if we listen to it.  We’re even bigger idiots if we let it distract us from doing the work.  Because that’s their goal.

Fear is contagious.  Don’t spread it.

Have you voted?

Have you talked to all your friends and neighbors about voting?

Have you volunteered somewhere?

Written a postcard?  Phone banked?  Texted?  Donated?  Made food and brought it to a local campaign office?

Encouraged someone else?  Talked someone else off the ledge?  Offered someone a ride to the polls?

Just like in sports, don’t listen to the trash talk.  Play your game.

3 weeks out is not the time for hand-wringing.  It’s the time for working even harder.

We have 3 weeks to play our game.  Uncertainty sucks.  We just have to be smarter than they are, not get distracted, and do the work.

Where is Al Giordano when you need him?  He would kick our chicken-little-ing behinds.

And where is Steeplejack when we need him?  He would have found one of Al’s great rants for me in a heartbeat.

War for Ukraine Day 963: Russia Has Murdered 9 More Ukrainian POWs

by Adam L Silverman|  October 13, 202410:28 pm| 20 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

A painting by Ukrainian artis NEIVANMADE. The background is white. In the center, which is black with blood red bordering, is an hourglass. Inside the hourglass is a Ukrainian Azovstal POW painted in blood red. He is shirtless. His arms are upward along the outer edges of the upper half of the hourglass forming a saltire cross. He is chained with steel gray chains shackled to his wrists. Above his head, in grey, is written "Ruzzian Captivity." below his torso in the lower half of the hourglass, written in gray, is "Kills." To the left of the hourglass "He Saved Others" is painted in gray. To the right of the hourglass "But He Can't Save Himself" is painted in gray.

A quick housekeeping note: We are still safe and sound in the hotel. My friend was able to make it over and check out my house this morning. It is intact, no apparent damage inside or out. So that’s good. The power is still out and TECO is still indicating that the power will be restored on/by 17 OCT. That said, around 6 PM I checked the outage map and the neighborhoods immediately to my east and northeast were out. I just checked again and it is showing power is restored. Which is encouraging. But by all reports there’s very little gasoline, the grocery stores have been running off of generators to be open, but are running out of food, and far too many are channeling their internal Floriduh! man and woman. We’ll sit tight here until the power is back on. Especially as I can telework from here.

I’m still quite fried, so I’m just going to run down the basics so I can rack out.

Also, TaMara has informed me that a number of you indicated in the comments to the shower post for John and Joelle that you come to Balloon Juice for these war update posts. Thank you all for the kind words, you are all most welcome.

Russia murdered nine more Ukrainian POWs today.

russians executed nine Ukrainian fighters at once this time. They laugh at international law, at our very humanity and decency. Yet, some smart people keep restricting Ukrainians from fighting full force because we probably dont have enough horror coming from invaders already.

I’ve seen the pictures and the video. You DO NOT NEED to go and look for them or at them. Just note and remember that Russia has committed another war crime, has once again violated the Law of Armed Combat, and the Geneva Convention.

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine’s office has already opened an investigation. I’m not linking as the announcement includes one of the pictures I’ve told you you don’t need to see.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

We Need to Act Right Now to Prevent Russia and Its Accomplices from Adapting to Our Capabilities – Address by the President

13 October 2024 – 20:22

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Now we are already preparing for new negotiations that will take place this week. We will continue to present our strategy for forcing Russia into peace to our European partners. The teams of our state and the teams of leaders of our partners who have already been presented with the Victory Plan continue to work out the details – joint steps are needed, and these must be strong steps. There are some additional issues that need to be agreed upon with our partners. But our partners have all the necessary potential, and it is entirely realistic to strengthen our state’s positions, Ukraine’s positions, in the way necessary for a just peace. And we need to act right now to prevent Russia and its accomplices from adapting to our capabilities. We see an increasing alliance between Russia and regimes like North Korea. This is no longer just about transferring weapons. It is actually about transferring people from North Korea to the occupying military forces. Obviously, in such circumstances, our relations with partners need to develop further. The frontline needs more support. When we talk about giving Ukraine greater long-range capabilities and more decisive supplies for our forces, it’s not just a list of military equipment. It’s about increasing the pressure on the aggressor – pressure that will be stronger than what Russia can handle. And it’s about preventing an even larger war. True peace can only be achieved through strength, and the entire next week will be dedicated to working with our partners for the sake of such strength, for the sake of true peace. The teams will be working. There will also be work with the leaders. We are counting heavily on timely decision-making. Our Ukrainian warriors, our entire nation, have proven that Ukraine is capable of achieving things that some people deemed impossible. We have already changed the course of this war for the better multiple times. Ukrainians know how to fight and how to secure a future for their country, for their people, for all of us. We must do that now as well. I am proud of our people. And our people deserve sufficient support and a just peace.

I would like to thank our combat brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine that have shown exceptional performance this week. The Pokrovsk direction – the 38th separate marine brigade. The Kurakhove direction – the 79th air assault brigade. The Vremivka direction – the 425th separate assault battalion. The Prydniprovskyi direction – the 35th separate marine brigade. And also the Orikhiv direction – the 65th and 118th separate mechanized brigades, as well as the 128th separate mountain assault brigade. Thank you to all of you! I also want to recognize our border guards, who, along with other Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine, are bravely defending our country. The Luhansk border guard detachment – the Revenge brigade – Soldier Vitaliy Bahinskyi, Junior Sergeant Oleksandr Baluyev, Staff Sergeant Oleksandr Olifirenko, Captain Vitaliy Kobal. The Hart brigade – these guys are fighting in the Kharkiv region – Soldiers Andriy Demydov and Oleksandr Borysenko. Thank you to you and all your brothers-in-arms! The Kharkiv border guard detachment – Chief Sergeant Oleksandr Vasylets and Senior Sergeant Vladyslav Kuznichenko. The Sumy border guard detachment – Senior Sergeant Mykola Trokhymenko and Major Ihor Kraplych. Thank you! I also want to recognize all the warriors from the DOZOR unit of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Glory to all who stand with us, with our people, with Ukraine! Thank you to everyone who is helping!

Glory to Ukraine!

The Ramstein summit is not being rescheduled as a result of President Biden’s unavailability last week, due to the hurricanes. The next one will go on as planned after the election. President Biden has also cancelled the high level meetings in Germany. Instead he’ll be participating in a quiet meeting with Scholz.

No worries, not like the Ukrainians aren’t trying to fight off a genocidal re-invasion or anything.

No wonder Washington is direly worried about escalation with Russia, since it imagines continuing to oppose the Soviet mirage. The Western collective subconscious is colonized by the Soviet (Wim Wenders stated that the European subconscious is being colonized by US pop culture).

In addition, the director of the Institute for Socioeconomic Studies, Alexey Zubets, believes that a normal family should have at least two children. So, the parents of one child may also fall under this new tax.

The only problem is that some Russians’ salaries are less than the proposed tax.

Dems Abroad UK Day of Action Report: The Speaker Emerita

by Rose Judson|  October 13, 20243:31 pm| 35 Comments

This post is in: 2024 Activism, Open Threads, Reports from the Field, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome

Today was the Democrats Abroad UK Day of Action. All DA chapters across the country met for fellowship or for GOTV activities. My local chapter held a ballot-request event a few weeks ago, so for us this was mostly about connecting in person. We huddled around phones in a pub to watch the national Zoom rally. It was broadcast from the London campaign office—we’ve never had a campaign office before—and the VIP speaking from London was Nancy Pelosi.

DA UK Announcement flyer

The pub was just busy enough that it was hard for us to hear her. She didn’t quite know where to look—her instinct was to address the staffers in the office, but she eventually found the camera and spoke to those of us in the virtual cheap seats. She focused on the practical: you, voters abroad, could be the margin of victory in many swing states; please make sure that your ballot is received, not just sent; try to get two friends to send in their ballots, too, even if they have to vote provisionally.

She was very positive and energetic and warm, pulling out that now-famous line, “You have to be willing to throw a punch, for the children.” There happened to be a lull in the background noise when she spoke about January 6, so we were able to hear her clearly.

One of the people at our table said, “They would have killed her if they’d found her.”

There were a lot of empty beer glasses on our table, but we were very sober for a moment after that. Most of us plan to go back to the US someday, and we want to make sure there is a country to go home to.

Turnout for voters abroad is abysmal, but this year I think it will be better than it has ever been before.

Someone here has to have an American friend abroad. There’s a real good chance she hasn’t voted. Only 8% of voters overseas did in 2020.

Make sure she sees THIS: www.votefromabroad.org

October is peak Democratic panic time. It felt good this year to be able to do more than fret from afar, even if it’s not as much as many of you have been doing. (I have been telling people at home for years about the fundraising efforts WaterGirl arranges here at the Beej, and how donating to ground-game organizations or down-ballot candidates gets you more bang for the buck.)

If you are a US expat abroad, visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program webpage or Vote from Abroad ASAP to request your ballot if you haven’t. You may still be able to vote a provisional ballot. If you can afford to, pay for expedited posting from your country of residence to ensure your ballot arrives before your state’s postal deadline. (I always send mine signed delivery.)

That’s what I’ve got for this evening. I swear I do have my follow-up post about the Google ad tech trial in the drafts folder, and I’ve been pestering my parents for details about the haunted B&B. In the meantime, tell us how your weekend has gone so far.

===========

Hat tip to commentor VeniceRiley for this tidbit, which warmed my left-the-Church-long-ago heart. Per USAToday, “What to know about the Al Smith dinner: Harris plans to skip, Trump plans to attend”:

Vice President Kamala Harris plans to skip a historic charity dinner while former President Donald Trump said Monday he will attend.

The annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a white-tie charity event in New York City, is known for prominent political figures poking fun at one another and the issues of the moment.

The Harris campaign confirmed with USA TODAY that the Democratic presidential nominee will not attend the dinner scheduled for Oct. 17, as they want to focus on the battleground states so close to the election.

The campaign noted her commitment to engaging Catholic voters and said Harris would attend as president if elected…

In 2017, Archbishop of New York Timothy Dolan came under fire for his relationship with Trump, according to CNN, and he gave the invocation at Trump’s inauguration…

As far as I can tell, Cardinal Dolan has never been accused of personally raping a young congregant, bullying an LGBTQ+ individual, or even stealing Church funds for his own benefit. He’s just used his considerable education & institutional power to enable others who did all those things and worse, while meeping sadly about ‘secularism’ destroying ‘the roots of Catholic tradition.’

The parochial school nuns back in the 1960s/70s taught us that such institutional hypocrisy was at least as sinful in the eyes of Jesus as more overt crimes, but of course they held no authority over the men in charge, then or now. VeniceRiley linked to the National Catholic Reporter, “Cardinal Dolan’s ‘Al Smith dinner’ disappointment is misdirected”:

show full post on front page

One could almost imagine the tears welling up in his eyes as New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan lamented the rejection he received from Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for president, of his invitation to the annual Al Smith charity dinner.

He said he was “doubly disappointed” at her refusal to attend. The cardinal has tried to convince the world that she is receiving bad advice. Others have tried to convince her that a change of mind would allow her to show civility, to elevate political discourse, to show she doesn’t have anything against Catholics and so on.

Perhaps it would be best to stop here to collect our breath and spend a moment or two reflecting on just who should be placed on the spot for engaging in less-than-civil behavior, as well as contributing to the diminishment of Catholic identity and credibility in the public square.

Even in this era of the endless gush of stuff coming at us on every manner of device, it is possible to cull reality from it all. In the case of Trump, the material almost outruns social media’s ability to keep up.

But first, a quick look back at the cardinal’s role in all of this, which extends to a well-reported recording of a phone call he made to Trump with other Catholic leaders in 2020. The two exhibited a kind of unctuous, ecclesial-political bromance, the former president declaring the cardinal a “great gentleman” and a “great friend of mine.” He also gave a nod to an implicit quid pro quo to paying attention to what his eminence “asks for.”

He also hailed the then-president for his support for Catholic schools, saying, “We need you more than ever.” Trump, in turn, declared himself the “best [president] in the history of the Catholic Church.”…

The sin here is not that Kamala Harris had the good sense to reply, “No thank you, I’m previously engaged.” The real scandal is that the good Catholic cardinal of the great city of New York would not have the courage to say, this year, that the current Republican candidate is a walking example of so much the Catholic Church finds repugnant in today’s politics that he would suspend the normal invitations.

The real controversy is that an event that touts its history of raising funds for society’s most needy is going to host someone who is one of the culture’s greatest threats to that kind of caring. The real outrage is that Trump, given the public nature and extent of his repulsive record, should be invited to a fundraiser for an organization, Catholic Charities, that has long worked in the trenches to save and transform lives on society’s farthest margins. It is tragic that the guest of honor this year will be someone whose personal example and policy wishes are in a collision course with the principles of Catholic social teaching.

We are triply disappointed, Cardinal Dolan, that in the name of the church and its witness to the wider culture, you did not suspend the norm this year and invite someone worthy of the event’s cause. We are disappointed you didn’t have the courage to stand up to Trump, a looming threat to the democratic ideals that allow the church to host such a high-profile public gathering.
