Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Their freedom requires your slavery.

“woke” is the new caravan.

“They all knew.”

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Seattle Meetup: Aug 22, 2024!

Meetup report from Dan B!

We had a wonderful Meet-up for Seattle Jackals to extend our hospitality to Sister Golden Bear.  She’s touring western Washington and SW B.C.  Eight of us, counting my partner Mike and Mr. Opiejeanne, arrived via light rail and car to my house in mid Beacon Hill.  The plan was to watch Kamala Harris make history.  It didn’t seem possible to find a restaurant that would have a TV on the convention so I volunteered my house, risky considering the reputation of “Snarling Mass of Seething Jackals”  or some such description.

We had wine, bubbly, Dim Sum, super spicy Hit and Sour soup, and Opiejeanne’s incredible almond tart.  Everyone got to see the gardens in a very quiet phase and the Crazy amount of grading / earth moving / paving, etc.  And they observed Mikey’s (my partner) den, with antique dentist chair, baby fridge, huge plasma TV and more, plus his Clubhouse (formerly toolshed – sob).  One cat, of three, was sighted briefly.

Sister Golden Bear gave the three intrepid light rail riders a ride home to far north Seattle so they didn’t have to ride late at night.  On her way back to her hotel she was thrilled by the view of downtown south of Lake Union.  The high freeway bridge is a fantastic viewpoint.  We hope she has a great trip this coming week, better than her flight here from San Jose sandwiched between two hulking guys.

Dan B sent this to me awhile ago and I dropped the ball.  I suck.  But it looks like a great meetup!  If someone can remind me of the date, I’ll add that.

Good Signs Open Thread

Buried under client work all of a sudden, but I’ve got time to give you all some fresh thread. Also, my ballot arrived today. So did this nice bit of swag:

Americans abroad for Harris-Walz sign

As far as I know, Dems Abroad has never had signs to give out before. I’m so happy to have one! DA is more organized than I’ve ever known them to be. Maybe we ex-pats will crack 10% turnout this year. If you or someone you know lives abroad, time is running out to request a regular ballot. Go to Vote from Abroad ASAP and get started!

William is a Very Good Boy (except when he steals tuna) Open Thread

William isn’t just a good boy, he’s a very lucky one as well.

He’s living in his new house with eclare. with a room of his own, with his very own window seat that appears to have been painted for camouflage.  (Though I’m guessing that might not be the case.)

eclare tells me that this perch is in “his” room, and that William is very soft and fluffy.

If I recall correctly, William was the stray who was being fed – he must think he won the lottery!  Kudos to satby and eclare for William’s new life.

We Have Our Work Cut Out For Us!

On Wisconsin!

We have added our two North Carolina organizations!

Ballot Curing: identify, contact, and assist voters whose ballots are challenged as deficient.

They expect to need to “cure” 150,000 ballots in North Carolina, and they don’t have very many days to do it.  Our funding will allow them to keep their canvassers to contact voters whose ballots need to be cured.  I’m super excited about this.

If you notify someone about something that needs to be corrected, and help them understand the process, provide transportation, or whatever is needed to resolve the problem – that’s 1 more voter whose vote gets counted.  So the rewards are enormous!

Angel Matching

We have starting Angel matches of $1,000 for all 4 organizations.  Details will be in comment #1 below.

Four Directions – Native Vote in Montana (Jon Tester Boost)

Four Directions is expanding their work with multiple tribes, and more funding will allow them to reach more people.

Nebraska Senate Field Organizing (Dan Osborn)

We made arrangements with the Osborn campaign for our funds to be used solely for field organizing!

NC Black Alliance – Election Protection / Ballot Curing

Our North Carolina partners predict that there will be 150,000 ballots in November that need “curing” to correct minor things that must be fixed in order for a person’s vote to count.  Not a typo:  150,000 ballots!

There is so much work to be done post-election in order for people’s votes to count:  identify, contact, and assist voters whose ballots are challenged as deficient.

In an election likely to have razor-thin margins, these challenged votes could change the outcome!

NCAAT in Action – Election Protection / Ballot Curing (NC Asian Americans Together)

North Carolina – 3 Key Judicial Candidates

Allison Riggs – NC State Supreme Court Justice (KEEP)

The seven-justice NC Supreme Court has a 5-2 Republican majority.  The MAGA court threw out a voting rights case and allowed the legislature free reign to gerrymander the state.  Justice Riggs is a social justice attorney who was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper, and is up for partisan reelection against a Republican challenger who ruled that life begins at conception while on the Court of Appeal.  More about Judge Riggs here.

Carolyn Thompson – NC Court of Appeals  (KEEP)

Incumbent Judge Thompson is also up for partisan re-election.  She is African-American and focused on victims of domestic violence while in private practice.  As a state legislator, her opponent, Thomas Murry, tried to exempt NC from the ACA and pushed draconian voter ID laws.  More on Judge Thompson here.

Raymond Smith – Challenger, State Senate (FLIP!)

Raymond Smith is an African American Gulf War veteran and former NC state Assembly member.  Smith was drawn out of his district (total coincidence, I’m sure!)  so he is running to flip a Senate seat in the Goldsboro area and shatter the Republican super-majority.  Let’s hope the Republican power move backfires on them. More on Raymond Smith here.

ACOSTA: Did Trump lose the 2020 election? Can you answer that?

COREY LEWANDOWSKI: Jim, I think it's very simple — the American people have passed the 2020 election and are focused on an election that's five weeks away

ACOSTA: So what you're saying is that Trump didn't lose? pic.twitter.com/DlpRe5Gcp4

Let’s not forget:

1) Pence’s family was with him at the Capitol on J6.
2) Pence’s security detail were so worried for their safety they made goodbye calls to their families.

That day could have been much worse if the rioters had found Pence—and Trump couldn’t have cared less. https://t.co/BcLBsPnHwo
