Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

This really is a full service blog.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

This blog will pay for itself.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

T R E 4 5 O N

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Defenders of Democracy in Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin

On of our lurkers passed along a link to his friend Sara’s new short film: The Officials.

It’s non paywalled at Time.com, and it’s about the people in the trenches who organize and staff elections in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida.  It features people whose names you might not recall, but you will likely recall the stories about them.  Like Meagan Wolfe – remember the woman the Republicans tried to throw out of office in in Wisconsin?

Sara Archambault is a Sundance Documentary Lab fellow, and works at the Kennedy School of Govt. at Harvard. Here previous feature, No Time To Fail, was about election officials in Rhode Island in the 2020 election.

These people take their jobs, and the sanctity of elections, so seriously.  It must be exponentially painful when the lies are spread and they are attacked for their good work.

If you have time, take a few minutes and watch it for inspiration.

Republican activists in swing states say they have seen little sign of the teams tasked with knocking on doors and turning out infrequent voters on behalf of Donald Trump. https://t.co/XaXEq3bvts

Per the Associated Press, in Michigan — “Republicans in swing states say they see scant signs of groups door-knocking for Trump”:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican activists in swing states say they have seen little sign of the teams tasked with knocking on doors and turning out infrequent voters on behalf of Donald Trump, raising concerns about the party’s presidential nominee relying on outside groups for an important part of his campaign operations.

Trump and the Republican National Committee he controls opted to share get-out-the-vote duties in key parts of the most competitive states this year with groups such as America PAC, the organization supported by billionaire Elon Musk.

It is difficult to demonstrate that something is not happening. But with fewer than 50 days until the Nov. 5 election, dozens of Republican officials, activists and operatives in Michigan, North Carolina and other battleground states say they have rarely or never witnessed the group’s canvassers. In Arizona and Nevada, the Musk-backed political action committee replaced its door-knocking company just this past week.

“I haven’t seen anybody,” said Nate Wilkowski, field director for the Republican Party in vote-rich Oakland County, Michigan, which includes crucial Detroit suburbs. He was speaking specifically of America PAC. “Nobody’s given me a heads-up that they’re around in Oakland County areas.”

Trump has relied on the loyalty of his fervent base, in an election expected to pivot on turnout. The spotty evidence, however, of what was portrayed as a sophisticated operation has some party activists questioning the operation’s value. Trump’s campaign views the race with Vice President Kamala Harris as a toss-up among likely voters but believes it has the edge among people who stayed away in 2016 and 2020, making it even more essential to reach them.

The work is particularly important in Michigan, where Trump lost by fewer than 160,000 votes in 2020, and where the GOP began the year mired in debt and fighting an ugly contest over the rightful state party leader…

Harris’ outreach on the ground in the seven states is being led by campaign-paid staff, a number the campaign puts at nearly 2,200 in more than 328 offices. Campaign aides said groups affiliated with labor organizations were canvassing independent of the campaign.

The vast majority of what outside groups that support Harris are doing is advertising. Based on ad reservations for Harris and the leading super PAC supporting her, they are on track to spend nearly $175 million more than Trump’s campaign and the leading super PACs supporting him by Election Day. Harris’ campaign has outspent Trump’s on advertising by 2-to-1 since she entered the race on July 23, according to the media tracking firm AdImpact…

A neoconservative, a climate change denier and a Never Trumper walk into a bar.

The bartender says "hello again, Bret Stephens. What can I get ya?" https://t.co/TE94yE9TMx

— Ragnarok Lobster ?? (@eclecticbrotha) September 21, 2024

This is infuriatingly disingenuous. "We don't know her positions" is a straw man and Stephens knows it. I'm pretty sure I know what her administration will look like. I won't like some of it! But Harris must wade into an argument about Gaza or….
Or what? @SRuhle is right. /1 https://t.co/m5rIlit98r

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) September 21, 2024

Bret Stephens asks Stephanie Ruhle why Kamala Harris has not done interviews and stated clearly what her policy positions are. Ruhle responds that ‘We don’t live in Nirvana’:
Bret Stephens: “I’m an undecided voter. I’m not sure I want to vote for Kamala. My fear is that she doesn’t really have a very good command of what she wants to do as president.
It would be great for her to sit down with you, or George Stephanopoulos, or you Stephanie.
It’s not too much to ask Kamala ‘Are you for a Palestinian state, if Hamas is going to run that state?'”
Stephanie Ruhle: “If you don’t like her answer, are you going to vote for Trump? Kamala Harris is not running for perfect, she is running against Trump.
We have two choices. There are some things that you might not know her answer too.
In 2024, we know exactly what Trump will do, who he is, and the kind of threat he is to democracy.”
Bret Stephens: “The problem that a lot of people have with Kamala is that we don’t know her answer to anything.”
Ruhle: “But you know his answer to everything.”
Stephens: “People also are expected to have some idea of what the program that you’re supposed to vote for.
I don’t think it’s a lot to ask for her to sit down for a real interview.”
Ruhle: “When you move to Nirvana, I’ll be your next door neighbor. We don’t live there.”

Stephanie Ruhle thinks it’s ‘utopian’ to demand Kamala Harris go through the process that every other candidate for president has gone through, a public vetting process.
Turns out, Stephanie Ruhle and her ilk are the true ‘threats to democracy’.

Saying it again: "Undecideds" who say "but I want to hear more about her policies" are not undecided. They want Harris to walk into an unwinnable policy debate with the media while Trump rants like a madman, so they can rationalize not voting for her. /2https://t.co/bOQFj4ab8U

There's no upside in explaining a policy that has no countervailing policy. You can't draw a distinction between "my policy" and "my opponent's policy" when your opponent is an old man gibbering about sharks. Trying to do so is a mug's game.

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) September 21, 2024

Tom Nichols, at the Atlantic (written in mid-June, before Biden dropped out):

… The Republican Party now has an entire subculture of Jimmy Clean Hands types, who claim to recognize that Trump is completely unfit for office and have said that they will not vote for him—yet will not vote to stop him.

Some Republicans have gone the full distance back to Trump, criticizing him but also now pledging to vote for him. Bill Barr comes to mind, as does Nikki Haley. Barr is a true believer, and Haley is a shallow opportunist, but both are pillars of courage next to Republicans such as Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, and John Bolton, the supposed guardians of the guardrails who have made the case against Trump but have also vowed not to vote for either Trump or Joe Biden. (Bolton has said that he will write in Dick Cheney.) Even former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a more moderate Republican now running for a Senate seat, has said that he will write in a “symbolic vote that states my dissatisfaction with where the party is.”…

In the end, the Clean Hands position encourages people to think that their vote really does not matter, other than as a solipsistic expression of personal dissatisfaction. It indulges the narcissistic fantasy that on Election Day, a town crier will say, “1 million votes for Biden, 1 million and one votes for Trump, and one admirable vote for Ronald Reagan. We all want to thank you for your deeply principled stand. And it’s not your fault that Trump won the state.”

Most of these ostensible Trump opponents, of course, will be happy no matter what happens in 2024. If Trump wins, they can push their Jimmy Clean Hands image, noting that no matter how much they hated Trump, they didn’t betray the party. If Trump loses, they can say that they warned their fellow Republicans. Either way, they can float above the fray. Because they care only about their own viability, both options work out: The Clean Hands Republicans believe that they will stay influential, moving and shaking, as if the Republican Party and the conservatism they once knew still existed.

I have sometimes been asked whether I would prefer that people vote for Trump or not vote at all. I think it is every American’s right not to vote, or to write in Marvin the Martian if they so choose. But I find it deeply mendacious for Republican leaders who know exactly how voting works—and especially how protest votes can affect the Electoral College—to make the simultaneous cases that Trump is completely unfit for office and that the election should not be regarded as a binary choice. The reality is that only one of two men will emerge with the codes to the U.S. nuclear arsenal. These prominent Republicans know better, which suggests to me that what they are really saying is that they hope Trump will win—but that they hope he wins with the votes of others, so that they themselves may avoid the moral stain of voting for a racist, misogynist felon who egged on rioting seditionists.

Personally, I vote as if my vote is the deciding ballot. I know it isn’t, of course, but it focuses my mind and makes me take the civic duty of voting seriously. People have given their lives for my right to stand in that booth, and when American democracy is facing a clear and existential threat, their sacrifice deserves something more than the selfish calculations of the Jimmy Clean Hands caucus.

Another former Republican stalwart:

A Trump loss would be good news for the MAGA grifters. Their target market will feel even more isolated and aggrieved- therefore, even readier to donate to scam PACs, subscribe to antisemitic podcasts, etc. etc. 1/x

— David Frum (@davidfrum) September 11, 2024

Unfortunately for the goal-oriented, they had no means to protect their goals from the MAGA grifters. JD Vance was chosen to serve the practical interests of some very rich people – but he could not break the habit of disparagement of women, cat owners, etc. etc. 3/x

BREAKING: Congressional leaders reach a deal to avert a shutdown and fund the government through Dec. 20. https://t.co/aH2Ou44KFM

— The Associated Press (@AP) September 22, 2024

Assuming, of course, the Repub Loose Cannon Caucus(es) don’t decide to shoot themselves in the groin, again… Per the Associated Press, “Spending deal averts a possible federal shutdown and funds the government into December”:

Congressional leaders announced an agreement Sunday on a short-term spending bill that will fund federal agencies for about three months, averting a possible partial government shutdown when the new budget year begins Oct. 1 and pushing final decisions until after the November election.

Temporary spending bills generally fund agencies at current levels, but an additional $231 million was included to bolster the Secret Service after the two assassination attempts against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, and additional money was added to aid with the presidential transition, among other things.

Lawmakers have struggled to get to this point as the current budget year winds to a close at month’s end. At the urging of the most conservative members of his conference, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had linked temporary funding with a mandate that would have compelled states to require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.

But Johnson abandoned that approach to reach an agreement, even as Trump insisted there should not be a stop-gap measure without the voting requirement.

Bipartisan negotiations began in earnest shortly after that, with leadership agreeing to extend funding into mid-December. That gives the current Congress the ability to fashion a full-year spending bill after the Nov. 5 election, rather than push that responsibility to the next Congress and president…

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats would evaluate the bill in its entirety before this week’s vote, but with the agreement, “Congress is now on a bipartisan path to avoid a government shutdown that would hurt everyday Americans.” …

Johnson’s earlier effort had no chance in the Democratic-controlled Senate and was opposed by the White House, but it did give the speaker a chance to show Trump and conservatives within his conference that he fought for their request.

The final result — government funding effectively on autopilot — was what many had predicted. With the election just weeks away, few lawmakers in either party had any appetite for the brinksmanship that often leads to a shutdown.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the same agreement could have been reached two weeks ago, but “Speaker Johnson chose to follow the MAGA way and wasted precious time.”…

War for Ukraine Day 942: The Butcher’s Bill in Kharkiv & Zaporizhzhia Under the Glide Bomb

A quick housekeeping note. Rosie is doing very well. Thank you all, again, for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Right now the air raid alert maps are mostly quiet.

Here’s the butcher’s bill from the overnight Russian strikes on Kharkiv:

Another painful dawn breaks over Kharkiv. Overnight, a russian bomb struck near a residential building, wounding 21 civilians. Among them, a 17-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman are fighting for their lives.

Last night, Russia struck Kharkiv again, this time with aerial bombs targeting an ordinary residential building. As a result, 21 people were injured, including an 8-year-old child and two 17-year-old teenagers. Sixty residents were evacuated from the building. All are receiving the necessary assistance.

Throughout the week, the enemy has used over 900 guided aerial bombs, around 400 “Shahed” drones, and nearly 30 missiles of various types.

We need to strengthen our capabilities to better protect lives and ensure safety. Ukraine needs full long-range capabilities, and we are working to convince our partners of this. We will continue these discussions next week.

Russia is running up a new tab in Zaporizhzhia:

This Fall Will Determine What Comes Next in This War – Address by the President

22 September 2024 – 22:07

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

We are starting our visit to the United States – now we are flying to Pennsylvania. This visit is special. Then, we are heading to New York and Washington. This fall will determine what comes next in this war. Together with our partners, we can strengthen our positions as needed for our victory – our shared victory – for a truly just peace.

In the United States, Ukraine will present its Plan for Victory, and the U.S. President will be the first to see it in full. Of course, I will also present the Plan for Victory to all leaders of partner countries who, like President Biden, are world leaders and can become leaders of peace by helping us with the Plan for Victory. We will also present it to Congress – to both parties and both U.S. presidential candidates. America has all the necessary power to ensure what we need most together with Ukraine, our allies and partners. We need peace, exactly as envisioned by the Peace Formula. Exactly as envisioned by the UN Charter. We are doing everything for this.

Weapons to defend our independence and our people. Diplomacy to consolidate partners and force Russia into peace. And justice so that Russia is held accountable for this war and feels its consequences.

And gratitude – our gratitude to everyone who is helping. I thank every nation and every leader who has felt that this war, Russia’s war against Ukraine, is about much more than just the fate of our Ukrainian people. I thank the United States, our leading supporter, and every nation that has shown independence and leadership in helping us protect people and prevent Russia from expanding this war. When Ukraine succeeds in defending itself, every other democratic nation will benefit from this.

It is now being determined what the legacy of the current generation of state leaders, those in the highest offices, will be. In the coming days, we are going to meet with the leaders of the Global South, G7, Europe, and international organizations – with many people who help consolidate the world. There will be very important meetings with representatives of the United States. True peace and a true victory for Ukraine and international law is what we need.

Glory to Ukraine!

Relatives and friends of the fallen Defenders gather near the graves at the Lychakiv Military Cemetery in Lviv very often. Some of them come right after dawn to drink the first morning coffee in the company of their deceased husbands, sons or brothers.

They have found new friends, soul mates here, because they understand each other with a half-word.

“Those with whom I was friends before the tragedy do not understand me. And they won’t be able to understand me because they haven’t experienced what I have,” Olena, whose husband died at the front in 2023 says.

They are all united by indescribable pain. But found support, joy, and the desire to continue living and fighting.

Militarnyi has the details:

Ukraine has received a verbal agreement from its Western partners to fund the missile program developed by the Ministry of Defense.

Rustem Umierov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, announced this in an interview with the Rada TV channel.

According to him, Western partners have already verbally agreed to fund it, as this issue is one of the highest priorities.

Currently, the Ministry of Defense has assumed full responsibility for the development of products under this program to provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with long-range weapons.

“Since this year, the Ministry of Defense has been taking the lead in this issue, we have developed a missile program,” Umierov said.

The development of missile systems is a strategically important area for Ukraine, as products of this type should be independent, with minimal use of foreign components.

“It is quite powerful, we have already exchanged with our partners and we are waiting to see how much of the capacity we can build missiles and drones they will support. But they have already given us a verbal agreement that they will finance this,” the Defense Minister added.

In July 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the media that Ukraine had tested an Ukrainian-made ballistic missile.

Additionally, the Minister reported that Ukraine’s missile program will closely cooperate with the drone program being implemented in Ukraine.

The EU:

The EU’s new defence commissioner @KubiliusA has called for obligatory ammunition stockpiles, telling @FT that capitals should be forced to have permanent inventories similar to rules on emergency gas storage levels https://t.co/3deh7NYq8x

— Henry Foy (@HenryJFoy) September 22, 2024

From The Financial Times:

The EU’s first defence commissioner wants to force countries to stockpile minimum levels of ammunition and other supplies, saying it is the best way to scale up the bloc’s undersized arms industry to ready it for war.

Andrius Kubilius, who will take the job this year if the European parliament approves, said the EU must prepare for Russian attack within a few years.

He compared his plan to similar arrangements for natural gas, under which countries must keep reserves and share them with neighbours in need.

“Why do we not have some kind of criteria called military security to keep in storage such and such an amount of artillery shells and some other products . . . let’s say powder [explosives]?

“You bring added value to the security of member states but in addition, you are creating permanent demand for production, which is the biggest issue for the defence industry. They lack stable long-term orders for production.”

The EU has tried to boost weapons output after Ukraine was forced to ration shells and missiles in its effort to push back Russian offensives.

Finland, Russia’s neighbour, is one of the few member states with large reserves of weaponry while media reports in Germany in 2022 said its army would run out of ammunition after two days of fighting.

Kubilius said he had no wish to duplicate the role of Nato. Officials at the US-dominated alliance have criticised the EU’s alternative set of equipment standards and procurement efforts.

In March, the EU allocated €500mn under the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) to boost output capacity to 2mn shells annually by the end of 2025.

Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister, said that was an improvement on the 300,000 annual limit when Russia attacked Kyiv in 2022. But more is needed, he said. “If I’m correct, we’re still behind the Russians.”

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said the bloc needs to spend €500bn to make up the shortfall in defence spending since the end of the cold war in the 1990s.

She has given Kubilius 100 days after taking office to produce a white paper on defence strategy. It should include a European air shield, which would cost hundreds of billions of euros, and a cyber defence system, she said.

Kubilius wants EU member states to borrow the money for this jointly, an idea opposed for now by net budget contributors Germany and the Netherlands.

He will also sketch out other projects of common interest that would be eligible for EU funding, including ways of incentivising defence industry companies to work together across borders.

The tendency of various European governments to favour their own national champions has led to a proliferation of different models of tanks, artillery pieces and fighting vehicles, denting efficiency.

The Kerch straits:

The answer is yes, of course Ukraine will drop that bridge…when they are ready and when it gets the greatest effect as part of on-going operations.

As Russia’s war escalates, will Ukraine down the Kerch Bridge in Crimea? https://t.co/LRRPa7KMgF via @AJEnglish

— Ben Hodges (@general_ben) September 22, 2024

LTG (ret) Hodges as quoted in al Jazeera:

A United States general told Al Jazeera that Ukraine is likely to launch a major new campaign to win back Crimea this year and says Washington should fully support it.

“We could be 100 percent clear to the Ukrainians and the Russians that we are 100 percent in favour of them retaking Crimea however they do it,” General Ben Hodges said.

He added: “Crimea … is sovereign Ukraine, and there will be no US tapping the brakes if they take down that Kerch Bridge – which I do predict is going to happen this year.”

Hodges commanded US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and was head of US forces in Europe before retiring.

Russia recently sank ships on either side of the bridge’s main span to protect its stanchions against Ukraine’s naval drones. Hodges believes Ukraine is now coming in for the final kill.

“The Russians know how vulnerable that bridge is, so they’ve put a lot of effort into air defence. They’ve sunk ferries along both sides to protect against these unmanned systems,” Hodges said.

“You’re not going to take it out with two or three Storm Shadows or ATACMS or something like that,” he said, referring to the British missiles with a 250km (155-mile) range and the US Army Tactical Missile Systems with a 300km (185-mile) range, which Ukraine has.

“You’re going to need an enormous amount of explosives, so this is going to be an operation with several different phases and aspects.

“It’s not going to be, ‘We didn’t get it this week. Let’s try again next week’. It’s going to be quite an operation,” Hodges added.

Politics may determine the timing.

“I think they’ll do it at a time when it gets literally the biggest bang but also contributes the most to whatever else is going on,” Hodges said.

Not everyone agrees that a Ukrainian operation against the Kerch Bridge is imminent.

“One of the reasons they’re leaving it is … they need to leave a path for the Russians to evacuate. They’re positioning themselves for that,” said Colonel Demetries Andrew Grimes, a special forces commander who was one of the first US officers to go to Ukraine after Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea.

He told Al Jazeera the timing of a Kerch Bridge operation would depend on whether Kyiv believes a majority of the population in Crimea would support a return of Ukrainian control.

“If [Ukraine’s armed forces] make the move and masses of Russians start leaving, then that’s a psychological victory. It’ll demonstrate that the Russian civilians don’t have faith in the Russian military protecting them and maintaining control of Crimea,” Grimes said.

That would place Russia in a dilemma – whether to force more military supplies in or allow waves of Russian speakers to leave.

“If you have a massive wave of people that are trying to leave, it’s going to be difficult for the Russians to try to bring in more supplies of weaponry.”

All of the Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants:

According to the head of the Estonian Defence Forces intelligence centre, Colonel Ants Kiviselg, the ammunition, which had not yet been stored indoors, was delivered to the depot by train just before the attack was launched. After it, the ammunition in the yard detonated along with the bunkers and depots.

‘There were 30,000 tonnes of explosive objects or 750,000 rounds of ammunition that were detonated. On average, the RF released 10,000 shells a week. So this ammunition supply was intended for two or three months. Russia has suffered ammunition losses as a result of this attack, and we will see the impact of these losses on the front in the coming weeks,’ said Kiviselg (https://news.err.ee/1609466482/edf-colonel-russia-s-naval-training-exercise-was-smaller-than-announced).

Here’s the full text of the first quoted tweet:

My thanks to @MT_Anderson for providing this Planet Labs imagery and allowing me to publish it with comments.

As is readily apparent, the RS-28 Sarmat test was a complete failure. The missile detonated in the silo leaving a massive crater and destroying the test site. The Sarmat is a liquid fueled missile so this accident could have occurred separate from the actual launch activity.

If this occurred as part of the fueling process, it could explain the lack of Cobra Ball activity on the day of the incident. This first, and last successful test of the Sarmat was April 20th, 2022.

With these events now official, this is at least the 4th failed test attempt of the “combat operational” Sarmat Heavy ICBM.

Note the 4 fire trucks responding to the forest fire.

Our featured writer today is our very own Jennifer Schiff.  (Her nym is J.)  Two books in one year!  Let’s give her a warm welcome!  (Running this one again because it was rudely interrupted a week ago by the golf course incident.)

If you would like your talent featured in Authors in Our Midst or Artists in Our Midst, send me an email message.  Don’t be shy!  I have no more Artists or Authors posts in the queue, so please don’t hesitate to  get in touch if you would like to be featured.

A MOCKTAIL FOR MURDER post for Balloon Juice (September 2024)

Hello again, fellow Balloon Juicers!

First of all, a big THANK YOU to every one of you who has purchased one or more of my books – and my Sanibel calendars — over the last seven (!) years. My book sales and sanity took big hits from Covid and then Hurricane Ian. And it’s been the support of my readers—and communities like Balloon Juice, which I have been reading since 2007—that has kept me going.  So, thank you. Now onto business!

As I wrote in my last post, I’ve had a busy year, writing and publishing TWO books, the second of which just came out. It’s called A Mocktail for Murder. And as the title suggests, it’s a murder mystery.

The book features the amateur sleuth from my Sanibel books, reporter Guin Jones. However, I wrote it as a standalone/sequel to those books, which you don’t have to have read to enjoy. You just need to like a good mystery or books that take place in New York City, where this one takes place.

In this book, Guin’s new husband is accused of killing his ex-wife, the founder of a new mocktail business (think Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel), but he swears he didn’t do it. Unfortunately, the police and a lot of other people don’t believe him. So investigative reporter Guin, who is now a business reporter for the FTFNYT, takes it upon herself to find the real killer and put him or her on ice.

With a cast of questionable characters (and some cute cats and dogs) and several twists and turns, A Mocktail for Murder will have you guessing whodunit until the end! (Or I hope it will!)

You can find Mocktail and my 13 other books on Amazon* (in paperback and for the Kindle), B&N Online, BAM, Bookshop, and in select bookstores. And if your bookstore or library doesn’t carry my books, they can order them for you via Ingram Distribution.

For more info about my books and me, visit Shovel & Pail Press and follow the Sanibel Island Mysteries page on Facebook.

*I know a lot of people hate Amazon, but they pay me the biggest royalty. (Ingram, the company that prints and distributes books to bookstores, is run by a bunch of TN Republicans who pay indie authors like me a pittance. But they are the only way I can get my books into bookstores and libraries.)
