Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

“woke” is the new caravan.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

“They all knew.”

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

When we show up, we win.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Atlanta, Tomorrow

by Michael D.|  November 14, 20081:34 pm| 69 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

For any of you straight allies out there from Atlanta, we’ll be attending a peaceful protest tomorrow at the State Capitol at 1:30pm, and then at 5:00 at the corner of Piedmont and 10th, we’ll be holding a candlelight vigil. Come out and join us, if you’re so inclined. I’ve never been one to attend protests like this, but the passage of Proposition 8 has motivated me like I’ve never been motivated. More information on the events here. If you’re not in Georgia and want to attend one of the hundreds of events around the country, go here and look up your state.

I’ll be the gay guy with the big sign! It’s also my birthday tomorrow (39). And since I am broke, I am going to just pretend that this is a group of people who turned out to celebrate it with me.

Update: If you are in Miami, here’s the information.

Update II: Suggestions for what I should put on my sign would be welcome. I have three. One of them will say, “When do I get to vote on YOUR marriage?”

What She Said

This is win on so many levels. Can I be an honorary “Jane Hamsher of the left?”

By the way, I am exceptionally cranky this afternoon. In case you missed it.

And while we are at it, what he said. Nothing infuriates me more than reading the syrupy odes to our vets from the wankosphere, when they couldn’t give a shit about them and any time they get in their way, they viciously attack them.

*** Update ***

This, on the other hand, is just too damned funny:

How quickly Palin forgets who brought her to the nation’s attention. It was a conservative blogger who lived in his parents’ basement.

University of Colorado-Colorado Springs student and right wing blogger Adam Brickley was given credit for being the first to envision Palin as a Republican vice-presidential candidate via his website: http://www.palinforvp.blogspot.com/.

Sarah and Todd Palin personally called to thank Brickley after she was selected as McCain’s running mate. Brickley gained national media attention for his successful Palin VP lobbying and here is his appearance on the Colbert Report. The interview starts around 6:00 minute mark of the video.

That deserves two “Heh, indeedy’s” with a twisting dismount.

Veterans’ Day (aka Rememberance Day)

by Michael D.|  November 11, 20089:34 am| 39 Comments

For those who are interested, a poem. One that every Canadian kid probably read and memorized in grade school:

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

show full post on front page

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

– Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
– Canadian Army

Physics

A physics game. Use the objects on the screen to get the solid green box inside the green box outline. Fun. Aggravating, but fun. If I gave you this link duriug the week, you’d never get any work done. Think “paper plane.”

A Farewell To Arms

Word has it that Rush Limbaugh has joined Erick Erickson in chasing down any fool rightwingers who stand in Sarah Palin’s way. Embarrassing the McCain campaign with her stupidity was not enough. Dragging down the entire GOP ticket and defrauding the party was not enough. It still won’t stop. The mere memory of Palin (who, sensibly, retreated quietly to Alaska) still has the GOP punching itself in the face while Democrats plan and build.

Do not plan on the entertainment ending any time soon. Those still defending Palin are the types who think the rest of the party’s blinkers are not screwed on tight enough. They will not, can not, admit that that they are wrong. The limb won’t heal, it will get stinkier the longer it stays on there, but good luck with the amputation. Politics is a boxing match.

Also: heh.

The site is running like Jonah Goldberg in a 10k turkey trot and yet you guys rack up 400 comments in two posts. Try not to fill this one so fast.

***

10:59 pm: Virginia goes to Obama. Snoopy dance.

10:50 pm (Tim) – I’ve ragged on Goldberg a few times lately, so I owe it to him to point out that this is a classy concession speech, notwithstanding the financial incentive that the author of Liberal Fascism!!1one1eleven! has to paint every Democratic move as proof of America-hating totalitarian evil.

10:48 pm- BTW- I just finished another beer, and wanted to throw this out there- Larry Johnson and the PUMA’s can go die in a fire.

10:47 pm (John) I want to get this in one last time- Everything you have heard so far is good news for John McCain.

10:42 pm (Tim) – FOX predicts that Obama walks away with Virginia. Will McCain even deliver a concession speech, or will he just go to bed?

10:40 pm (John)- Any word on Murtha? Would love to see him lose. How about Bachman Traitor Overdrive? Any word on that cyst?

10:34 pm (John) – In a just universe, there would be a channel where Jeffrey Toobin, David Gergen, Eugene Robinson, and Chuck Todd would all be together, and the rest of these folks could be thrown into a woodchipper.

Also, in case I gloat too much, my mother reminded me I once thought Ryan Leaf was a franchise pick. Hell, I voted twice for Bush. That beats the Leaf bust hands down. John +9 or something. I see Parliament of Funk and a cigar in the short-term future.

10:22 pm (Tim) – Johnny Mac win Texas. That should revive the party at McCain HQ.
