Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

In after Baud. Damn.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Tragedy At Balloon Juice

by John Cole|  February 10, 200612:17 pm| 50 Comments

This is an absolute disaster:

Cindy Sheehan, the anti- Iraq war activist whose son was killed in the conflict there, put an end to speculation on Thursday that she would launch a long-shot bid to become a U.S. senator from California.

Sheehan, speaking in front of San Francisco City Hall, said she would not run for the office.

Damnit. Those campaign soundbites were going to be comedy GOLD, and I was really looking forward to the militant wing of the California Democrats forcing an actual debate between DiFi and Sheehan.

Who Is That Strange Voice You Hear?

Via Kevin Drum, this story in the WaPO in which you can hear and vote (I will tell you who I voted for in the comments section so I don’t sway your vote)on the finalists to be the voice of the DC Metro train.

Why do I tell you this?

Because right now, my sister is the voice of the tram at SEA-TAC Airport. If you have ever been on one of those trams, you have been instructed to do something by my sister.

I am cruising around the ‘sphere trying to nail down what really happened with Sheehan last night, and I came across Rep. Lynn Woolsey’s website.

This may be the most attractive political website I have ever seen. I really like the colors and the cleanness. It feels like a breezy room with open windows and linen curtains and hardwood floors on a nice cool spring afternoon.

Or maybe that is just me.

My sources tell me that Cindy Sheehan managed to get herself arrested before the speech started.

Atta girl! I can’t wait for the fawning paeans to the ‘Grief Mom’ at DU and DKOS.

I really am not watching- I am on a diet and can’t drink, and I need beverages when Bush speaks for extended periods. Place your SOTU commentary her, and I will check up on it later.

An Alternative to Legalization

by John Cole|  January 31, 20064:23 pm| 25 Comments

This post is in: Excellent Links, The War on Your Neighbor, aka the War on Drugs

Mark Kleiman has a decent proposal:

Today’s laws criminalize millions of otherwise law-abiding individuals and create a multi-billion-dollar illicit market. Commercializtion would give the marketing geniuses who have done such a fine job persuading children to smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, and supersize themselves with junk food the opportunity to show what they could do with marijuana. Neither choice appeals to me.

My proposed law: It would be illegal to sell cannabis or to exchange it for anything of value, but not to grow it, possess it, use it, or give it away. I don’t imagine that the law would effectively prevent sales, any more than anti-gambling laws suppress private poker games. The goal would be to prevent marketing.

Read the whole thing.

More Medicare

It’s possible that the rollout of Medicare Part D is one of the worst policy initiatives in American history. When Hilzoy at Obsidian Wings, who’s been on this story like suck on Cleveland, is eating, spleeping sleeping or at work you can get your dose of outrage at TPM Cafe’s new Medicare blog. Read, weep, adjust your voting habits accordingly.
