Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Not all heroes wear capes.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

Doug Bandow and Friends

Interesting piece up by Tacitus on Doug Bandow and the implications of his being a paid shill and how this impacts blogs.

I agree with much of what he says and observes, but the part about Kos/Dean/Teachout I think is not even relevant. The rest, more so, in so far as it discusses where all this is going, and the lines between advocacy and simply being a paid hack.

Cory Maye, the War on Drugs, and Your Eroding Civil Rights

by John Cole|  December 14, 20051:19 pm| 9 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Excellent Links, Politics, The War on Your Neighbor, aka the War on Drugs

If I were smarter and more articulate, I would have written this Sebastian Holsclaw post over at ObWi:

The latest compilation of research on the Maye case can be found at this post on TheAgitator. This case solidifies my dissatisfaction with the drug war and how it has peeled away our civil rights. A number of things really bug me about this case. I’m not going to discuss it purely as a matter of law, but rather as a matter of justice. I’m going to attempt to examine how it fits it to our understanding of the interaction between citizens and the US government.

The War on Terror still appears to be a piker when it comes to diminishing our rights when compared to the hideous and unwinnable War on Your Neighbor War on Drugs.

Also, check the Agitator for some news updates in the Cory Mayes case, in particular this post (but really, just go to the top of the page and start scrolling).

Holiday Goodness

Just took my Thanksgiving turkey carcass out of the freezer this afternoon and made some delicious turkey rice soup. Ingredients:

1 lb carrots
1 lb celery
2 onions
1 bag frozen peas
1 lb mushrooms
turkey carcass
2 cups wild rice

I assume you all know how to make soup, so I will not waste time giving you specific instructions. Iwill say this, though- yuou need very little salt and pepper to make a grreat soup. After you boil the carcass for a while, pull it out of the pot, let it cool, and you will have a great broth for your soup already. Pick the meat off the carcass, throw it in the put with the other ingredients, and that is really it. Super simple, and I will be able to eat it for over a week. Just warm, tasty goodness for cold days. For dessert I am making baked apples stuffed with cinnamon and raisins.

For some good Holiday Cheer, I recommend visiting this website, F**k Christmas, which takes on the chowderheads pushing this tedious ‘War on Christmas’ crap. I can’t figure out who annoys me more- the folks who try to remove every manger from a public place, or the folks who are fighting this mythical ‘War on Christmas.’

Personally, I just want some nog with rum.

Worst Quotes of the Year

by John Cole|  December 12, 20053:25 pm| 44 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I was perusing the 40 most obnoxious quotes of 2005 (Right Wing Edition– someone send me the left-wing edition if someone has done one), and I saw this quote:

Absolutely (I had sex with animals). I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule.”

First off, BLECH!.

Second, that is batshit-insane anti-abortion advocate Neil Horsley on Hannity and Colmes:

Colmes: “You had sex with animals?”

Horsley: “Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule.”

Colmes: “I’m not so sure that is so.”

Horsley: “You didn’t grow up on a farm in Georgia, did you?”

Colmes: “Are you suggesting that everybody who grows up on a farm in Georgia has a mule as a girlfriend?”

Horsley: It has historically been the case. You people are so far removed from the reality…Welcome to domestic life on the farm…”

Horsley is the guy who looks like a mildly retarded Abe Lincoln in the HBO documentary Soldiers in the Army of God, which follows the lunatics around as they plot their anti-abortion schemes and debate the relative merits of Eric Rudolph and bombing abortion clinics. I didn’t think there was anything out there that could make these creeps any ickier, and I was wrong.

I’m not appealing for sympathy or anything, by my prep for a conference (for which I leave this friday) has reached full panic mode, I have 100 exams to grade by thursday and I got no sleep because last night I mixed up Dayquil with Nyquil. Expect light blogging from me. About the conference, if any San Fran readers know who makes the best beer you can be sure that I’ll follow up on your tips.

A couple of links to tide you over:

Open Pants Thread

I picked up a pair of hemp jeans, Patagonia brand, the other day. I know that you guys care about everything I wear, but hemp is especially awesome. They’re my favorite pair of pants now. It wears lighter than denim, has a cool dress-casual look and the material is practically unbreakable. Of course it’s expensive since hemp, which will kill you from smoke inhalation before you get a buzz, is for some stupid reason ILLEGAL to grow in the United States. I got mine for half off and I’m not telling you where [actually I don’t remember]. I’m just sad that society (and my wife) has rules against wearing the same pair of pants every day.

So, when will America do the sensible thing and legalize the best clothing material since silkworm poop? I’ll start the bidding at never, or as soon as the cotton lobby collectively resigns to take up a career in the musical theater. Whichever comes first.

Consider this an open thread.
