Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

No one could have predicted…

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

The revolution will be supervised.

Let me file that under fuck it.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

Giving up is unforgivable.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

RINO Sightings

The Big Cat Chronicles is hosting the current RINO Sightings.

I am too wrapped up watching the Hurricane coverage to be of much use to you all right now.

It looks like New Orleans had some small fortune in that thes storm weakened slighlty and turned eastward, but there are reports of levee’s failing. I have also heard that the Superdome roof has not necessarily failed, but part of a covering of the roof (not structural, but waterproofing and weatherproofing) has been peeled back.

Not Leaving

I just heard on the news that some people are refusing to evacuate New Orleans. This can’t be true, can it?

I understand some people can’t be evacuated. But refusing to leave?

BTW- In the aftermath of the hurricane, when Bush goes to Louisiana, who do you think will be the first to say ‘Bush will take time from his vacation to see these victims, but he won’t take time from his vacation to meet Cindy Sheehan, a victim of his policies?’

Your choices:

1.) Someone at the DU.
2.) Someone at dKos.
3.) A front pager at dKos.
4.) Some random blogger.
5.) Someone at the Camp Crawford circus.
6.) Cynthia McKinney.

After further thought, my guess is someone at the HuffPo.

*** Update ***

The natives are restless and cussing out Fox News.

*** Update ***

Who will be the first to blame this on the nation’s moral slide?

Tough Times for the Big Easy

Looks like New Orleans is going to get hit hard:

Emergency officials along the Gulf Coast urged residents to move to safer ground as powerful Hurricane Katrina churned toward shore with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said low-lying areas along the Gulf Coast could expect storm surges of up to 25 feet as the Category 5 storm makes landfall early Monday.

Florida- I couldn’t care less about. New Orleans, on the other hand, is a national treasure.

World’s Shortest Personality Test

For your entertainment.

You are dependable, popular, and observant.
Deep and thoughtful, you are prone to moodiness.
In fact, your emotions tend to influence everything you do.

You are unique, creative, and expressive.
You don’t mind waving your freak flag every once and a while.
And lucky for you, most people find your weird ways charming!

The World’s Shortest Personality Test

From the look of my results, I think we can all agree the test is hopelessly flawed.

The Perils of Flying

by John Cole|  August 26, 20054:30 pm| 18 Comments

This does not inspire confidence:

Illegal immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks damaged the rotor, the agency said.

Neither the pilot nor the Border Patrol observer was injured.

The A-Star helicopter was two miles west of the U.S. Port of Entry in Andrade, Calif., on Tuesday when a group of immigrants began throwing rocks at the aircraft.

I think helicopters are fascinating, and have flown in them numerous times, but I don’t think most people know how easy it is to bring them down. I know some people who swear that helicopters are the one machine out there that actively fights you when you use it as designed.

Monks Gone Wild

Seriously wild:

Cambodian Buddhist monk was in hospital and his colleague was under detention on Thursday at a pagoda after a drug and alcohol fuelled fight allegedly ended in one attacking the other with a machete.

Police chief of Kandaing district in the central province of Pursat, Pen Thun, said after a night spent binging on methamphetamines and rice wine, the pair had quarrelled over a 50 cent loan owed to Khieu Aen, 23, that fellow monk Van Chanthoeun, 19, said he would need time to repay.

“Khieu Aen became enraged, produced a machete and chopped Chanthoeun once in the shoulder, requiring him to be sent to hospital,” Thun said. “It is unseemly behaviour for monks and it gives the police a headache dealing with such cases.”

He said police were now waiting for the ministry of cults and religions to make a decision on the case as the police cannot arrest monks.

That is the weirdest story I have read in a while.
