Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Everybody saw this coming.

Fight them, without becoming them!

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

American Revelations

by John Cole|  August 15, 20056:25 pm| 5 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I don’t know where it came from, but last week I received a complimentary copy of American Revelations, a book that reviews ten great cornerstones of the American experience and American ideals.

I was pleasantly surprised that this was not, as I had feared, simply another in a series of jingoistic agitprop pieces that show up at my doorstep every 3-4 months, but rather an interesting examination of some of the ideas that made this country what it is. My personal favorite was the section on George C. Marshall and the Marshall Plan, as anything involving WWII immediately catches my eye, but there is something in here for everyone.

Just in case you need somethign to read. Up next for me is Orr Kelly’s Meeting the Fox, about the WWII campaign in Africa.

I am proud to bring you this weeks RINO Sightings, the other weekly Carnival. Unlike previous offerings, I don’t have a creative bone in my body, so there will be no poetry or song lyrics.

RINOS Foreign:

Meanwhile, Chris Tiberius takes the foreign press to task.

The Armies of Liberation looks at media manipulation by the Yemeni President.

RINOS Domestic:

The Louisiana Libertarian discusses the new FEC hire, Penny Nance, and what the future might hold.

Mark Coffey, in his brand new digs at Decision ’08, takes some time to use Chris Lehane as a punching bag.

The Big Cat Chrnicles examines Hillary Clinton, show-stopper.

The Searchlight Crusades looks at border control.

Classical Values takes people to task for careless rhetoric, notably James Wolcott.

The Heartless Libertarian provides a book review of The Fair Tax Book.

Pigilito examines an Intelligent Design article, while the Idiom looks at Bush’s ID comments.

Resistance is Futile is planning to enroll his children in Hogwarts. Seriously.

My Pet Jawa looks at the press infatuation with DKos.

Dean Esmay defends Roosevelt and Truman from war criminal charges.

Don Surber chronicles the wholesale slaughter caused by the WV DNR.

Some think Paul Hackett deserves a refund.

I honestly don’t know how to describe this offering from Orac Knows.

Say Uncle discusses ‘What is a Right?’

Restless Mania looks at recent IAEA proclamations regarding Iran.

Richard Bennett examines an autism study.

Michael Demmons discusses the ‘myth of public property.’

A.J. Strata looks at the Democrats and Cindy Sheehan.

That’s all folks. If I missed anyone, let me know. Next Week, RINO sightings will be hosted by the World According to Nick.

Watching A Train Wreck

by John Cole|  August 15, 20051:03 am| 9 Comments

I just watched Courtney Love on Comedy Central’s Friars Roast of Pamela anderson, and she was a a train wreck.

This Roast was, by far, the filthiest thing I have ever seen on television, and I hope Brent Bozell is in bed.

For that matter, I wish I was in bed, as the insomnia reaches day 5 or 6.

No. I didn’t like Halo. Discuss.

How Does This Happen?

by John Cole|  August 14, 20051:21 pm| 10 Comments

Apparently, they just discovered a giant 400-foot waterfall. In California:

Dick McDermott knows these parts as well as any man can. But McDermott says he’s never laid eyes on the nearly 400-foot waterfall that park officials recently discovered in a remote corner of the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, 43,000 acres of wilderness in northern California.

The 92-year-old used to earn a meager living mining the creeks that meander through the deeply wooded hills. He has slogged through the brush and hiked overgrown logging roads, hunting deer and gathering wood for his homemade fiddles.

“Sure, I was surprised,” he said from his home in the park, where he’s lived for more than 70 years. “I’ve been all around that place, I never seen ’em.”

Until recently, very few had seen the roaring water that tumbles three tiers before pouring neatly into Crystal Creek. That such a spectacle should evade even park officials for nearly 40 years is remarkable, said park superintendent Jim Milestone.

Interesting.

Wired

If you haven’t already, check out this month’s Wired magazine, which has two fun stories, one about milbloggers by one of my favorite reporters, John Hockenberry (who is great on NPR’s The Infinite Mind), and this piece on how much the internet has changed things over the past ten years. The story about Banksy is worth a read, as well.
