Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

“They all knew.”

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Blast From The Past

Jessica Lynch will be attending WVU this fall:

Former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch will begin on-campus classes this fall at West Virginia University, the school said yesterday.

Lynch announced in March that she was beginning online courses at WVU and that she hoped to become an elementary school teacher.

“WVU is very pleased to be able to assist her in that pursuit,” school spokeswoman Becky Lofstead said yesterday, “and proud to call Jessica Lynch a Mountaineer.”

Lynch, a native of Palestine, West Virginia, is enrolled in the College of Human Resources and Education.

Former Gov. Bob Wise promised Lynch that the state would pay for her education at any West Virginia public college or university after her April 1, 2003, rescue from an Iraqi hospital.

Lynch, a former Army supply clerk, became one of the most visible faces of the Iraq war when she was rescued from an Iraqi hospital on April 1, 2003. Her convoy was attacked after taking a wrong turn in the Iraqi town of Nasiriyah. Eleven American soldiers were killed and six, including Lynch, were captured.

Is it just me, or does it feel like the whole Jessica Lynch saga took place decades ago? At any rate, Lynch looks good:

In other West Virginia news, Don Surber has an update on the Byrd commercials we discussed yesterday. Don thinks Byrd is ‘running scared,’ but I think it is a little too early to make such claims.

Patrick Ruffini has unveiled the SCOTUS Wire, which will function much like his always useful 2008 Presidential Wire.

Check it out.

Excellent news. One of my favorite bloggers, Matt Stinson, is back in action with swanky new digs.

I forgot to submit something this week, but the RINO festival is up at All Things Jennifer. I haven’t had time to check it out yet, but I am sure there is something interesting there for everyone.

Almost forgot- The Bills suck, Jennifer. Go Steelers!

*** Update ***

Don’t miss the Robert C. Byrd* Carnival of the Hillbillies, either.

*Byrd, as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, funnelled so much money the state that virtually everything is named after him. Thus, it is only fitting that we name the weekly WV blogger digest after him.

I need a new set of knives, as I almost lopped my finger off with a semi-dull knife. What do you all think of these?

What knive sets would you recommend?

Aso, which is better. The Ionic Breeze, or the Blue Air?

*** Update ***

OK. Unless George Soros and Donald Trump read this website, and decide to hit the tip jar to the tune of $1800.00, I think we can rule out the speculation about me purchasing a set of CutCo knives.

AIN’T… GONNA… HAPPEN…

The Daily Flame Thread

by John Cole|  July 30, 200510:08 am| 59 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Rather than search the web for new Plame stories, I offer you this from yesterday’s Cleland thread:

Democrats just can’t take their own medicine. For 5 years they have called Bush Hitler, Chimp, Shrub and who knows what else. NAACP ads depicted Bush as responsible for an African American being chained and dragged from a pick-up truck. Condoleeza Rice is Aunt Jemima, Colen Powell is Uncle Tom and the Vice President…you don’t want to know. Howard Dean “hates” Republicans, and John Edwards proclaimed that if Kerry is elected Christopher Reeves would’nt have had to die. They, and their enablers in the media, publish false douments about Bush’s National Guard service (a story CBS admitted to be working on for five years!), call Bush a liar for over a year by correctly stating that Saddam was pursuing the purchase of Yellowcake in Africa and carried the story of Abu Gharaib on the front page of the NY Times for ever and ever.

Oh, wait, I forgot HALLIBURTN, HALLIBURTON and HALLIBURTON.

Then they suddenly take up righteous indignation over a Georgia Senatorial Campaign?

Have at each other.

*** Update ***

I should probably add, the reason I do this is so you have a place to unload on each other. I have received several complaints (and I am not singling people out, as I don’t read all the comments- I try, really) about personal attacks and unnecessary harshness in the comments, and I don’t want to be in the habit of policing the comments section, yet I don’t want to drive people away.

So, from now on, flame away in the designated zones, but try to keep it polite and somewhat pleasant in the other comments sections. If you are in another thread, and want to be rude or find it impossible to control yourselves, come to the designated zone, write your piece, and then link to it in the other thread. People can then ignore it and still participate in the comments.

Cats on the Web

The NY Times discusses the dominance of cats on the web.

Probably the easiest way to get a thousand bloggers to link to a Times story is to talk about cats on the web.

Or call bloggers salivating morons. Either way.

Speaking of cats on the web, don’t forget this week’s Ark. Alas, no dinosaurs.
