Open Thread (and wondering)

by WaterGirl|  December 7, 20232:00 pm| 192 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I am using this TOTALLY OPEN THREAD as an opportunity to also ask a question, but please treat it like an open thread!

Hoping you guys can help me out here.  We sold 284 Balloon Juice Pet Calendars in 2021, and we have sold 87 so far this year.

So i’m wondering…

  • Less enthusiasm this year because of the Cafe Press paper issue last year?
  • Current events leaving people less motivated about, maybe, everything?
  • Less enthusiasm because you’re less engaged this year b/c you didn’t send in photos this year?
  • Don’t care for the design?
  • We have put up fewer reminder posts?
  • Has the BJ pet calendar run its course?
  • Were you guys buying calendars before more as a way to support the pet charity, but we also have a thermometer now?
  • Have been planning to order, just haven’t gotten around to it yet?
  • Something else we haven’t thought of?

Anyway, it would help to understand what’s up so we know what to do next year.

If you’ve never bought BJ pet calendars in the past, no need to comment about the calendars, for you, this really is just an open thread.

FL Republicans phoning it in

by Betty Cracker|  December 7, 202312:05 pm| 78 Comments

This post is in: LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, Republican Venality

Moms for Liberty cofounder Bridget Ziegler used to seek the spotlight. She was behind Ron DeSantis when he signed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill she loudly championed (second adult blonde from the right). The bill’s statehouse sponsor, former Rep. Joe Harding, was also looking on (directly behind the governor).

DeSantis signing Don't Say Gay law

Harding, a squinty fascist who spent his short political career yapping about his Christian values, has since resigned and been sentenced to prison after the DOJ busted him for small business loan scams. And as everyone now knows, Ziegler’s husband, FL GOP Chair Christian Ziegler, is being investigated for rape, and both bible-thumping Zieglers told investigators they’d had three-way sex with the accuser in the past.

The Moms for Liberty extremist organization is trying to distance itself from Bridget Ziegler, but at least one out of state chapter has adopted a less embarrassing brand name due to the Ziegler scandal fallout. This week, Bridget Ziegler resigned her gig at the conservative Leadership Institute think-tank, where she was in charge of training other religious kooks to take over school boards.

But so far, she’s hanging onto her Sarasota County School Board seat. She’s also still a DeSantis-appointed member of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board, which the governor created to punish Disney for criticizing the Don’t Say Gay law.

The school board meets next week. The tourism board met yesterday. Since this scandal is getting wall-to-wall coverage in Florida, lots of people wondered if Bridget Ziegler would show up in person to the board meeting as usual. Nope — she chickened out.

Ziegler phoned in on Zoom, appearing as a disembodied “BZ” on a screen. The other DeSantis-aligned religious fanatics and grifters on the board were present and ignored the BZ elephant in the room.

Instead, they stuck to their talking points, yammering about Disney’s operational fuckups to provide cover for the governor’s blatant attacks on free speech. But in the public comments portion of the meeting, a hero emerged in the person of Celebration, Florida resident Debra McDonald.

After noting that the governor has called on accused rapist Christian Ziegler to resign as FL GOP chair, McDonald took up the issue the board ignored: (Daily Beast)

“Bridget should follow,” McDonald continued. “Mrs. Ziegler has not made Florida a better place. She is the face of the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ revolution, which brought this board to where it is, to this place today, and has caused untold harm in our classrooms and in our communities…”

“(Bridget Ziegler’s) role in demonizing members of the LGBTQ community is hurting the state, while she has apparently been a part of the letter B in that group,” McDonald wryly observed.

Then she addressed BZ directly.

“Bridget, you need to do what is best for the greater good,” McDonald said. “We live in a free Florida, not an autocratic pseudo-Christian dictatorship.”

McDonald again spoke to the board as a whole.

“What Mrs. Ziegler does privately with other consenting adults is no more our business than it is the behavior of the other consenting adults,” McDonald said. “It is the rank hypocrisy of attacking others for what she personally practices that should disqualify her for a position of public trust.”

With that, McDonald returned to her seat in the audience.

Well done, Ms. McDonald!

I hope Sarasota residents will show up at next week’s school board meeting and follow McDonald’s example. Both Zieglers need to be hounded out of public life, and if the husband is found guilty of the crimes he’s accused of, he should go to jail for a long time. Enough with these spiteful fucking hypocrites.

Is it possible that this massive scandal implicating the state’s GOP establishment and its AstroTurf activists, combined with DeSantis’s humiliating flop on the national stage, will inspire Florida Republicans to rethink their approach? Not until they start losing elections, and they’ve been winning since the turn of the century.

That said, normies are getting an extremely unflattering close-up of the state’s culture warriors. And the hard-right state supreme court is expected to clear the way for the governor’s six-week abortion ban to take effect any day now.

It’s hard for a Democrat to be optimistic about Florida politics, so I’m a pessimist as a defense mechanism. But I will say it’s rare to see the stage set so completely for voter backlash to party overreach. We shall see.

Thursday Morning Open Thread: The Old Warrior Has One Last Battle In Him

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, President Biden, Proud to Be A Democrat

But none of those 50 thinks they can defeat Biden. So here we are. https://t.co/CM23TNl6bw

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) December 6, 2023

The President is right.

“I don’t think anyone doubts our democracy is even more at risk in 2024…Trump’s not even hiding the ball anymore. He’s telling us exactly what he wants to do. He’s making no bones about it.” –@JoeBiden

— Marc E. Elias (@marceelias) December 6, 2023

NBC News, “Biden says he’s ‘not the only one who can defeat’ Trump”

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he didn’t think he was the only Democrat who could prevail over former President Donald Trump next year but that “I will defeat him” — a day after he suggested he wouldn’t be running for re-election had Trump stayed out.

Biden was delivering remarks urging Congress to pass his national security package when he responded to a reporter’s question about whether he thought another Democrat could defeat Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner.

“Probably 50 of them,” Biden said.

“No, I’m not the only one who can defeat him, but I will defeat him,” he added.

On Tuesday, Biden said that his re-election campaign was prompted in part by Trump’s decision to run for president again and that it was an effort to block his predecessor from reclaiming the White House.

“If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running,” Biden said at a campaign event in Boston, adding that he “cannot let him win.”…

Politico adds:

…This comes after there has been a new focus on Trump’s authoritarian tendencies in the campaign. In a town hall with Fox News’ Sean Hannity earlier this week, Trump again indicated that he would use the levers of power to take revenge on his enemies if he is reelected.

“He says ‘you’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’” Trump said. “I said ‘no no no, other than day one.’”

The backstory, at Reuters:

… After considering the decision for weeks with family and close confidants, Biden announced his re-election bid in April, coming to the private belief that neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor any other Democratic hopeful could beat Trump in next year’s general election, according to a former White House official who requested anonymity to discuss the president’s thinking.

The president’s aides increasingly regard Trump’s frontrunner status for the Republican presidential nomination as insurmountable, according to two of those Democrats who also declined to be named.

Biden has repeatedly made comments about Trump during a fundraising blitz that started on Tuesday in Boston and is set to include at least nine events before the end of the month.

“I don’t think anyone doubts our democracy is at risk again,” Biden said earlier on Tuesday.

Looks like we could use an open thread.  Is anybody still up?

I am not often up in the wee hours of the night, but I got my flu shot on Wednesday and I was so tired that I went to bed at 7 pm!  That’s crazy early around here, so my little Henry just woke me up to go out, and here I am.

What a crazy time we are living in, with ups and downs coming so fast we can hardly recover from one before the next one comes. Not a fan of rollercoasters, but here we are.  It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, so we have to take care of ourselves along the way.

With that not-so-deep thought, I am headed back to bed to get some sleep.  But I will leave you with a picture of my sweet Willow.  Miss Willow is her name most of the time.  Before I named the two kitties (siblings) for a few days they were “Miss Girl” and “Mr. Boy”.  Then they became Willow and Little Bear.  Then they became Miss Willow and Mr. Bear.

P.S.  I cannot believe that Christmas is just over two weeks away.  How did that happen?

The United States announced a new package of weapons and equipment for Ukraine valued at up to $175 million.

We are grateful for your unwavering support. This is a great congratulation to our warriors on Armed Forces Day.

Capabilities provided in today’s package include air defense munitions, additional ammunition for HIMARS, artillery ammunition, High-speed Anti-Radiation Missiles, anti-armor missiles, small arms ammunition, demolition munitions for obstacle clearing, equipment to protect critical national infrastructure, and spare parts, ancillary equipment, services, training, and transportation.

Together, we are stronger!
🇺🇦🤝🇺🇸

Unless the Biden administration and the Democratic caucuses in both chambers of Congress can make something happen in the next week or so, this is going to be one of the last packages of US aid to Ukraine:

New US aid package for Ukraine with $175 million of arms and equipment.

Ukraine will fight for its own interests and for the fair interests of every free nation – address by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

6 December 2023 – 22:09

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today was a long and very meaningful day. The Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. My congratulations, warriors! Thank you for your strength and courage. I thank everyone who defends Ukraine, our national interests and the interests of our society. All of us in Ukraine are grateful.

I honored our warriors with state awards. The day before, I signed several decrees on the occasion of the Day of the Armed Forces – in total, more than 700 warriors were honored. All of them are worthy.

I visited a military hospital to thank the doctors and support the guys recovering from wounds. And I am grateful and proud of all the military doctors of Ukraine, all our combat medics, all the nurses who save the lives of the wounded warriors and bring them back to life after heavy attacks by the occupier.

Today I also visited Okhmatdyt – on the occasion of St. Nicholas Day. And it is symbolic that according to the updated calendar, two holidays now coincide – the Day of our Armed Forces, the basis of defense, and St. Nicholas Day. Life itself shows that the dreams of our children, the security of Ukrainian families, and the culture of the Ukrainian people are possible only on the foundation of the mighty and respected Armed Forces of Ukraine, and their results – together with all the Defense and Security Forces of our country. It is important that the strength of our warriors truly returns security to our people, our children, and Ukrainian cities.

Today, the First Lady of Ukraine and her team visited two special schools in Zhytomyr region – the Superhero Schools. In total, there are 11 such schools already. These are state institutions under the patronage of Olena, which are established at children’s hospitals. Sometimes children need to be treated in a hospital for months, undergo long rehabilitation. And for them not to lose out on education, there are schools and special teachers in hospitals that allow children to undergo treatment and study at the same time. It is important for this initiative to expand, for new educational institutions to be opened in the regions. I am grateful to everyone who helps with the work of the Superhero Schools and who, on days like today, helps create a real holiday for all children of Ukraine – no matter where they are.

Today we also had a lot of international work. We managed to return to Ukraine eight more Ukrainian children who were deported to Russia from our temporarily occupied territory. I am grateful to the State of Qatar for its effective mediation and to Dmytro Lubinets, the Ombudsman, and the entire team that is working on this issue.

Our Ukrainian delegation, including Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Head of the Office Andriy Yermak, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, is actively working in Washington. There were important meetings, particularly in the U.S. Congress, and with representatives of President Biden’s administration. Secretary of Defense Austin, Secretary of State Blinken. The work is highly active, and as a result, we have good, necessary signals for Ukraine. And also a new package of American assistance, military support. I am grateful to the United States for their support!

I took part in a meeting of the Group of Seven leaders. It is already a tradition that Ukraine is represented at such summits. I thanked Japan and Mr. Prime Minister Kishida for the productive and principled Japanese presidency of the Group of Seven. Next year Italy will be holding the presidency, and we are already discussing with Giorgia, Mrs. Prime Minister of Italy, the priorities of the Italian presidency. It was important for me to thank each of the G7 leaders for their personal leadership. There is a new powerful statement of the Group of Seven, in particular, in support of Ukraine. Many important things for our country, for our people, are included in the statement.

Today I also addressed the participants of the conference in Washington, DC, dedicated to our joint work with America on defense production. It is very important that our agreements with President Biden are gradually being implemented. Minister for Strategic Industries Kamyshin has had a lot of meetings in Washington these days. But that’s not all… I would also like to recognize the work of Ukrainian law enforcers and Prosecutor General Kostin with their partners in America. These are important steps – the United States has indicted four Russian military personnel suspected of committing a war crime – torturing a U.S. citizen. For Ukraine, it is crucial that every crime committed by the Russian occupiers is thoroughly investigated and given a lawful and fair legal process, leading to an appropriate verdict. And our institutions, together with our partners, are actively working on this.

One more thing. I held a meeting with international relations officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office. We are preparing a vigorous continuation of December and an active beginning of the next year. Ukraine will fight for its own interests, for the fair interests of every free nation. Because when we can defend ourselves, it strengthens everyone else in the world who, like us in Ukraine, values freedom and the international order.

I thank everyone who is fighting and working for Ukraine! Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine! And may the memory of all Ukrainian heroes of different times who fought and gave their lives to keep Ukraine alive remain bright.

Glory to Ukraine!

Together with my colleagues, met with @SpeakerJohnson. We discussed the situation on the frontlines and urgent needs of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Advent Calendar: Day 6.

Today, we would like to say «Vielen Dank» to our German friends @BMVg_Bundeswehr for their unwavering support in our fight for freedom. We are grateful for Marder IFVs and all the military support provided to Ukraine.

Marder is one of the best IFVs in service with our defense forces. This machine both saves the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and forces enemies from their positions.

More weapons of victory are coming soon. Stay tuned!

Ukrainian special forces killed former lawmaker near Moscow, officials say https://t.co/LwVTlzcu9t

— Financial Times (@FT) December 6, 2023

Here’s the details from The Financial Times:

A former Ukraine lawmaker who had been charged with treason was assassinated on Wednesday near Moscow in an operation carried out by Ukrainian security service agents, according to officials.

Ilya Kiva, 46, a proponent of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and longtime opponent of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, fled to Russia last year after facing treason charges and being stripped of his mandate as a member of the Ukrainian parliament.

When Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine on February 24 2022, Kiva wrote on social media that “the Ukrainian people need liberation” and that “Ukrainians, Belarusians [and] Russians are one people”.

Two Ukrainian officials with direct knowledge of the killing told the Financial Times that the SBU security service had carried out the operation.

“The liquidation of a top traitor, collaborator and propagandist Ilya Kiva is a special operation of the SBU,” one of the officials said. Kiva had been killed with “small arms”, the official added.

The killing is the latest in a series of assassinations against Ukrainian defectors and Russians involved in Moscow’s invasion, and come at the same time as attacks deep inside Russia believed to have been carried out by the SBU.

While the agency’s policy is not to take credit for the strikes, it has on some occasions claimed responsibility, as it did with the October attack on Russia’s illegally built bridge connecting the country to occupied Crimea.

Kiva, a political chameleon known for his gruff voice and quarrelsome demeanour, started as a member of the Ukrainian far-right, moved on to being a police official and unsuccessfully ran for president in 2019 as a member of the Socialist Party of Ukraine.

An avid social media user noted for his violent and graphic posts, he frequently published anti-Ukrainian propaganda, calling Kyiv’s leadership “Nazis” and demanding Zelenskyy resign.

In an interview with Russian television prior to the invasion, he alleged that his country was “enslaved and brought to its knees by the west, permeated by Nazism, and it has no future. Ukraine needs help. The Ukrainian people need liberation.”

That’s enough for tonight.
