The Repub Who Cried SQUIRREL! (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  October 11, 20239:43 am| 122 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Republicans suck at every level of government. Whether a minority of U.S. citizens elect one as president, as happened in 2016, or whether a majority of the citizens of Florida’s 32nd most populous county elect Repubs as county commissioners, as happens in every local election where I live, GOP politicians at all levels spend their time in office ignoring real problems and grandstanding about fake ones.

Last week, I read that a member of our all-Repub county commission, Diana Finegan, was submitting a resolution to ask DeSantis to “call out the militia to suppress and repel the invasion of illegals entering Florida,” claiming that we are “under siege by invaders with the complicity of the current administration and the federal government, who have ordered all federal and military assets to stand down.”

This morning, I read a headline that said “Finegan pulls immigration issue off the agenda,” and for a moment I was relieved, thinking maybe she’d come to her senses and would go back to evaluating alligator mitigation plans or funding no-show county jobs for relatives instead of lying about U.S. border control. But no — the local paper explains that the commissioner “expressed her intention to rework the resolution and reintroduce it with more supportive language directed towards Gov. Ron DeSantis.”

Christ on a cracker. In this county, we’re always at least six months behind the trends in Florida, let alone the country, so this elected official doesn’t realize performance art to impress Ron DeSantis is no longer mandatory. The people who elected Finegan are performative dolts too, of course:

While the resolution was withdrawn from the agenda, some members of the public attended the meeting to express their opinions during the public comment period… Mary Seader urged the board to take action to “protect, guard, and shield” the county’s residents and shared reports of illegal immigrants breaking into homes in Michigan.

You can understand Seader’s concerns — our town is only about an 18 hour drive from Kalamazoo, so the thieves might be on their way right now with the intent to bust into her senior singles condo development and make off with her new air fryer and garden gnomes.

The truth is my county is “under siege.” Not by immigrant hordes but by scammy developers and rapacious insurance companies and corrupt GOP politicians. But as long as a majority keep barking their heads off every time some Repub fraud yells “SQUIRREL,” we’ll keep getting lied to and ripped off. It never ends.

Open thread.

PS: The newspaper articles on Finegan’s resolution cosplay note that she’s a member of the local Repub Executive Committee and that members of that organization asked her to bring forth the resolution. Our county DEC is more trauma support group than political organization, but I can imagine the response if word got out that an elected Dem (a species that went extinct here when Dixiecrats jumped ship) performed an official act at the behest of her executive committee. The screeching would rattle windows in Kalamazoo!

Tuesday Night Open Thread: Nancy Mace’s Scarlet Letter

It stands for Attention… seeker (in lieu of a coarser noun). Nancy Mace is GOING places, and she doesn’t care about collateral damage, just as long as she’s getting that sweet, intoxicating ATTENTION!

Per the estimable Charles P. Pierce, at Esquire, “Rep. Nancy Mace Is on a Tourist Visa to MAGAland”:

… In not quite two terms in the House, Mace already has amassed an impressive career as a flea on a griddle. In 2022, she didn’t vote to impeach the former president*, but she did criticize him on TV, which was enough to get him to endorse a primary challenge to Mace, which failed. Since then, Mace has exercised a kind of tourist visa to MAGAland. She endorsed a criminal referral against Steve Bannon. In January, she landed all over Gaetz when he agitated against McCarthy’s re-election as speaker. Then, over the last week, she’s joined with Gaetz in defenestrating McCarthy, and then she appeared with him on Steve Bannon’s podcast to celebrate the historic moment. This could be called playing both ends against the middle, except there is no middle to the Republican caucus in the House. This act has grown old to her colleagues. From Politico:

... McCarthy and Mace didn’t always see eye to eye, but the California Republican had helped Mace secure her seat in Congress by pumping millions of dollars into her once-struggling campaign. Mace’s move to aggressively fundraise off her vote to bounce McCarthy is only intensifying her colleagues’ anger toward her. “It’s disgraceful,” said Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.), a longtime McCarthy ally. “If the purpose is because it’s going to help me build my brand and gonna bring a little bit more money to my campaign,” Womack added of Mace, “then I think you need to question why you’re here.”

After whipsawing between distance from and embrace of former President Donald Trump, for example, she recently opened the door to backing his primary campaign. Within the Capitol, she’s known as an outspoken critic of party leadership and a frequent guest on cable news shows. “I’m not sure what the fallout will be. She has no coalition of support,” said one House GOP lawmaker, who was granted anonymity to discuss internal party dynamics. “I can’t stop her from going on the Sunday shows,” this lawmaker added. “But inside the conference, she is a running joke.”…

You won’t find a better encapsulation of Nancy Mace’s phoniness than her going on CBS today & claiming her big problem with McCarthy was he didn’t do enough for abuse survivors, then in the next breath endorsing Gym Jordan for speaker. She stands for nothing beyond getting on TV.

— Ron Filipkowski (@RonFilipkowski) October 5, 2023

Nancy Mace insisted that she voted to boot McCarthy due to anger over his not scheduling a vote on abortion pill access, and so the obvious solution is to endorse the most far-right Republican.

(Incidentally, her @SplitTicket_ Wins-Above-Replacement scores. 2020: D+4, 2022: D+5) https://t.co/mqxy22t4Kl

— Lakshya Jain (@lxeagle17) October 8, 2023

Mace is a classic example of how faux moderation is really, really dicey and doesn't necessarily work if you aren't actually authentic about it. Conservative and centrist Republicans alike easily and routinely put up more impressive electoral performances than she does.

I feel certain the ethics committee run by the Rs will immediately ask him to step down from any committees.  If he is even on any?  And surely they will boot Santos and Gaetz out of the R caucus!?!!!

War for Ukraine Day 594: Russia’s Genocidal Re-Invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine’s Resilient Defense, & Hamas’s Attack on Israel Start to Converge

by Adam L Silverman|  October 10, 20234:47 pm| 40 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Connections are being made between Bibi’s cozying up to Putin, Putin’s reliance on Iranian weaponry, Iran’s state sponsorship of Hamas, and Hamas’s attack on Israel.

Here is Israeli journalist Amit Segal’s assessment of the connections:

I suspect that history will remember this war, among other things, as another global scene of the conflict between the West-Ukraine axis and the Russia-Iran axis of evil. I don’t understand much about it, but in my opinion, after the evil Russian announcements, it’s time to take action and officially and definitively stand by Ukraine, which stands by us now. It is both right and wise.

While it is unclear which Russian remarks Segal is referring to, here’s Putin’s most recent statement, which, of course, blames the US for the attacks:

Putin finally makes his first comments on the Israel-Palestine war.

He says it's "a clear example of the failure of US policy in the Middle East" for not "taking the core interests of the Palestinian people into account" and working to create an independent Palestinian state. pic.twitter.com/oJQjs6ax0I

So Putin just plainly conned Netanyahu.
The tactics of staying neutral regarding Ukraine in exchange for Russian deterrence of Iran and its proxies in the region have failed miserably.
It's now Russia that depends on Tehran – the dirty magic of Putin’s failure in Ukraine.

Strategic relations between Ukraine and Romania are a new force for the entire Black Sea region – address by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

10 October 2023 – 20:48

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

A really good visit to Romania. A fruitful one.

Meetings with President Iohannis, the heads of the chambers of the Romanian parliament, MPs, and the Prime Minister of Romania.

What have we achieved?

First, there are good agreements on weapons. I can’t disclose everything now, but shells – affirmative, bolstering air defense – affirmative. We are still preparing some things. They will be powerful. A training center for F-16 pilots is being set up in Romania, and Ukrainian pilots will be among the first to be trained.

Secondly, we stated that we are moving to the level of strategic partnership.

There is a very clear meaning behind this political wording. As President Iohannis told me, we can rely on Romania. Romania can definitely rely on Ukraine.

Together, we will significantly strengthen our region. We are already making a critical contribution to global food security through cooperation in the Danube ports and in the western part of the Black Sea. There will be more cooperation.

We are expanding our transport corridors, there will be more jobs and economic opportunities. Today we signed a joint statement of the presidents that outlines our plans for the future.

Third, we will soon open a new railroad line through Moldova, which will become a new transport corridor.

Together with Moldova, we are moving towards the start of negotiations on EU membership – with Romania’s full support. I am grateful for this.

The majority in the Romanian parliament supports us.

The Romanian government – in the coming weeks, we are preparing a joint meeting of Ukrainian and Romanian government officials.

I am grateful to Mr. President Iohannis, the entire Romanian political class and society.

Our strategic relations are a new force for the entire Black Sea region.

If we succeed in implementing everything we have planned now and which our teams will be working on, this part of Europe will get a new source of economic and security development.

Thank you to everyone who supports us! It is good that today we managed to bolster our defense!

Glory to Ukraine!

Ukraine’s anti-corruption efforts are moving forward:

Zelensky signed the Ukrainian parliament's amended law on the restoration of public access to electronic asset declarations of government officials, which are to be made available immediately. The e-system, suspended in Feb '22, is an anticorruption tool. https://t.co/T6pPqZgOZu https://t.co/ramdNJyOqu

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) October 10, 2023

4/ Further examination shows that the facility is approximately 150 meters from the railroad station, facilitating swift logistical operations. What's more, it is situated a mere 300 meters away from a residential area, presenting a significant safety concern for local residents. pic.twitter.com/vnYhuH2lrL

6/ Regrettably, this is not an isolated case, but rather a pervasive strategy used by russian forces in Ukraine since 2014. They often blend active civilian facilities with military ones, either to evade targeting or to exploit civilian casualties for propaganda purposes.

Difficult to say how much truth is in his words, but Oleg Tsaryov (traitor, former Ukrainian politician) says the operation to cut off Avdiivka was being prepared for a long time and it is a serious attempt to displace Ukrainians who have been there for a long time. Avdiivka is right next to Donetsk and is causing a lot of problems for the occupiers. So far, they haven’t been able to move the Ukrainians.

He also says the operation caught Ukrainians off guard but Ukrainians denied this.

I am really impressed by how VoteVets has stepped forward this cycle.  Not surprising since the Republicans have made it clear that they give not two shits about our national security, about the role that the military serves, or the actual human beings who put everything on the line. I guess we have Tommy Tubberville and Rs in the House and Senate to thank for something.

This isn’t an either/or situation. As in Israel, innocent civilians have been murdered by invading thugs in Ukraine. Despite Josh Hawley’s wish, America will NEVER abandon a democracy and ally in its time of need. Period. pic.twitter.com/KQi8VIUSIA

I have been talking about this strategy for days. Let’s hope the wording that makes it sounds like whether they should try to do link Ukraine funding and Israel funding is the result of piss poor reporting.  I cannot think of a single reason not to do that.

The Biden admin. and key lawmakers in Congress are actively discussing whether aid to Israel could be linked to more funding for Ukraine as a strategy to pass both spending priorities, according to an administration official and two Republican lawmakers. https://t.co/72lk8exu6T
