Youngkin Is Shattering GOP Fundraising Records in Virginia – But We Are Fighting Back!

This post is in: Open Threads

In case we didn’t know before just how important the Virginia elections are, we only need to look at the nearly 7.5 million dollars Youngkin’s PAC raised in the past 3 months.  And that doesn’t even include the 2 million from a TikTok billionaire.

Republican mega-donors are out in force, and not just for the governor!  They are rescuing some of the R candidates for state Senate and the House of Delegates with their enormous donations.

Republican Megadonors Help Youngkin’s PAC Shatter fundraising records

TIME IS SHORT.  PEOPLE ARE VOTING.  LET’S DO THIS.

CAN WE GET TO our $20,000 goal today?

We are currently at $15,530.

That will be a big lift, but after what you guys did yesterday, I think we can do it!

Donate

And we have a new $500 Angel Match!  Big thanks to frosty, and to all the angels who got us to this p9oint!

Frosty will match up to $25 per person until we hit the $500 mark.

So let’s fight with what we’ve got here on Balloon Juice – our small dollar fundraising and political action, and our postcards.  Helping Virginia – one donation and one postcard at a time.

Good info from yesterday, in case you didn’t see it then:

I don’t know who Chaz Nuttycombe is, but Virginia peeps seem to listen to him.  This is the good news:

With 30 Days Until VA Election Day 2023, Chaz Nuttycombe’s Latest Ratings Have Dems with 71% Chance of Senate Majority, 57% Chance of HoD Majority

Three races have just been designated as toss-ups in this last leg of the race, and two of them are the races we are funding!

Update on the possible third candidate to support (not supporting for now)

The third race that Chaz Nuttycombe considers a toss-up is very well-funded, so we’re staying out of that one.

The other race I mentioned yesterday – that is “tilt” blue – looked at first glance like it might be a good one to support, but as of 3 weeks ago, the Dem had nearly 2x the money as the R, and the Dem has gotten at least $135,000 from a millionaire.  So if the Dem doesn’t win, it won’t be because he didn’t have enough money.

Date to mark on your calendars

The last date for Q3 fundraising reports is Monday – just 6 days from now.  But some reports arrive sooner, and we’re checking that site for updates every morning.

Look for us to make some big changes if the third quarter fundraising numbers tell a different story.  Since we are little (but mighty!) we can turn on a dime.

That’s part of our power. :-)

House Republicans brace for a drawn-out speaker fight, via @MariannaReports @maeganvaz https://t.co/kWvPIbC9lu

— Philip Rucker (@PhilipRucker) October 10, 2023

Per the Washington Post, “House Republicans brace for drawn-out speaker fight”:

House Republicans are settling in for what many expect to be a drawn-out and contentious fight for the speaker’s gavel this week, with simmering internal conflicts muddying the path forward for the two declared candidates.

Less than a week after an intraparty clash that saw Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) removed as speaker of the House, Republicans returned to the Capitol on Monday under increased pressure to coalesce around a leader so that the House can begin work to provide aid to Israel after Hamas-backed attacks left hundreds dead and prompted Israel to declare war. Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.) doesn’t have much authority to do anything besides oversee the election of a new speaker. But some Republicans also have begun back-channel talks with some Democrats to see if both parties could find a way to give McHenry more authority if Republicans cannot coalesce around a speaker this week.

House Republicans are now scrambling to figure out how to govern — and elect a speaker — with only their majority’s votes, while a small group could hold up any progress. The process of electing a speaker has again tested the ideologically fractious conference, with hard-right and moderate lawmakers pushing to ensure their political and electoral needs are represented.

But even the desire to address aid to Israel has not moved the needle toward electing either Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) or Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). Many Republican lawmakers and aides said neither conservative can garner the 217 votes needed to wield the speaker’s gavel…

Dozens of Republicans, led by Reps. Chip Roy (Tex.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), have urged a change in the conference rules to elect a speaker, which say that whoever gets 51 percent of the vote, currently 111, would win the majority party’s support for the speakership. Those members would like to change the rule to raise the threshold to 217, the number needed to win on the House floor, so they can avoid repeated rounds of failed ballots that would display their disagreement to the public…

What, and give up show business?!?

every day the House Rs cannot pick a speaker and resort to long-debunked lies they confirm they and their irresponsible 4-time indicted, national security blabbing cult leader are unfit to serve. The whole world is watching.

Punchbowl‘s Jake Sherman is so excited, his colleagues had to hose him down before letting him back into the newsroom — “House Republicans are still a mess”:

House Republicans are entering a critical two-day stretch in their quest to elect a new speaker, and they’re mired in a state of total confusion.

Neither candidate — House Majority Leader Steve Scalise nor Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) — has anywhere near the requisite support to win a majority inside the Republican conference or on the House floor.

During a meeting Monday night in the basement of the Capitol, Republicans aired recriminations from last week’s vote to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker while scoffing down a pungent barbecue dinner…

At this point, less than half of House Republicans have committed publicly to Scalise or Jordan…

“The world is watching,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said. “They’re seeing a dysfunctional democracy. This is what the ayatollah wants. It’s what Chairman Xi, when he talks about … that democracy doesn’t work. We need to prove them wrong. And we need to get a speaker by Wednesday.”

Yet inside the House Republican meeting Monday, none of that urgency was evident. Neither Jordan nor Scalise said anything during the meeting, sitting patiently as their allies argued during the more than two-hour session…

Two figures played outsized roles in Monday’s session — McCarthy and his close ally Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, the current speaker pro tem.

McHenry was diplomatic during the gathering. He spoke briefly about the proposal to change the threshold for electing a speaker, noting that more than 100 Republicans supported the Fitzpatrick-Roy plan, according to members. McHenry and Scalise have had a rough relationship over the last few years. McHenry was once Scalise’s deputy, but he’s drifted toward the McCarthy camp in recent years.

Yet it’s exceedingly clear that the House GOP is getting anxious about being paralyzed once again…

.@timburchett says McCarthy’s name was brought up tonight but he won’t back him.

“There’s anger,” Burchett said about 8 who voted to oust McCarthy. “Some people were mad.”

Cold Grey Dawn Open Thread: Cornel West and RFK Jr, Independently Independent

Because of course he is https://t.co/S9n9qv2JfW

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) October 5, 2023

Per the Associated Press:

Progressive activist Cornel West said Thursday that he is no longer running for president under the Green Party banner. Instead, the high-profile African American thought leader will run as an independent.

“I’m running as an Independent candidate for President of the United States to end the iron grip of the ruling class and ensure true democracy!” West wrote on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

“People are hungry for change,” he added. “They want good policies over partisan politics. We need to break the grip of the duopoly and give power to the people.” …

It remains to be seen whether West can gather the tens of thousands of signatures required to qualify for the ballot in crucial states. Without the infrastructure of a formal party, such signature gathering will fall largely to grassroots volunteers.

“As Dr. West’s campaign for president grows, he believes the best way to challenge the entrenched system is by focusing 100% on the people, not on the intricacies of internal party dynamics,” West’s campaign said in a written statement. “Our Constitution provides for Independent candidates to gain ballot access in all states, and Dr. West has begun seeking ballot access as an Independent, unaffiliated with any political party.”

In the statement, West’s campaign also acknowledged continuing to share the Green Party’s “values and commitment to justice.” …

I’ll bet a vinyl copy of Vanessa Daou’s Zipless (which I have never owned but remember seeing in my college radio station) that this is an internal Green Party power struggle, that list gatekeepers & those who control ballot access didn’t want to play ball w Brothers West & Daou https://t.co/BAbJQMKGh7

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) October 5, 2023

(Daou, as of this writing, is still West’s campaign manager.)

Well, Brother West *does* have a habit of burning bridges with every single academic institution that hires him…

— Kerr Avon 🇺🇲🇺🇦🇹🇼 (@KerrAvon4) October 5, 2023

The view from Electoral Vote (10/6 edition):

… [P]residential candidate Cornel West and the Green Party have decided they do not see eye-to-eye, and so he announced yesterday that he will go it on his own as an independent candidate.

West is famously… prickly, let’s say, so it’s entirely possible that he and the people who run the Green Party just couldn’t get along. On the other hand, running for president for over a year is hard work, particularly if you know you cannot possibly win. He’s also more than clever enough to realize that “a pox on both your houses” rhetoric is all good and well, but that on the issues West cares about, Donald Trump would be a giant step backward as compared to any Democrat. So, it’s possible that this is a way for West to back out of running for president while saving face.

Whatever the case may be, this is certainly good news for the Democrats. There are some people who are going to vote Green no matter who the candidate is. West’s exit from the ticket will have no impact on those people. There are also some people who would vote for West in particular. Now, that will be impossible for some of those folks, because there is virtually no chance an independent can get on the ballot in all 50 states. So, some disaffected liberals will be left without that protest option, and some of those folks will undoubtedly return to the Democratic tent.

Indeed, if West really wanted to make a statement while not aiding Trump, then the correct play would be to get on the ballot in deep blue states and to stay off in swing states. We’ll have to watch to see where, exactly, he ends up qualifying. (Z)

Per NBC:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appears headed for a breakup with the party his family defined for generations, teasing that he’s preparing to ditch the Democrats in a “historic” announcement Monday in which he is expected to launch an independent presidential campaign against President Joe Biden.

The split is mutual, though hardly amicable.

His campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, which started in April, evolved from an annoyance for party leaders to a full-frontal assault on them; he now claims Democratic officials are conspiring to “rig” the primaries against him, citing his familiar blend of half-truths and outright fabrications.

Kennedy’s conspiracy theorizing and association with fringe figures like Alex Jones have long made him something of a black sheep in his family, which otherwise remains true blue. And his impending self-exile puts him less in Camelot than in the camp of former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who left the Democratic Party after she claimed nefarious forces stunted her own presidential bid in 2020. (Kennedy has suggested she could be his secretary of state.)

“He is taking a dive among Democrats,” said Tim Malloy, an analyst with the nonpartisan Quinnipiac University poll. “A lot of Americans would entertain somebody from another party, and he’s pretty popular with a lot of Republicans.”…

Meanwhile, Democrats — a sizable minority of whom seemed initially willing to overlook his baggage in their search for an alternative to Biden — have grown to increasingly dislike Kennedy…

RFK Jr.’s days of avoiding Trump’s wrath might be numbered.

— Jake Lahut (@JakeLahut) October 5, 2023

When Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was roaming New Hampshire earlier this year, Donald Trump’s campaign saw him as “pure upside,” as one source close to the campaign put it…

Now that he is moving to run as an independent in the 2024 general election, putting him in direct competition with Trump for similarly inclined voters, Kennedy’s days of evading MAGA wrath may be numbered…

A FiveThirtyEight analysis from August found that Kennedy does appeal more to Republicans than those in his own party by a wide margin, with his approval rating among Republicans consistently in 20 to 30 points positive territory. Meanwhile, Democrats tend to have an overwhelmingly negative opinion of him in primary polls thus far.

“RFK Jr. appeals to crazies, and particularly Trump crazies,” a former Democratic presidential campaign adviser told The Daily Beast, requesting anonymity to speak candidly about the things some Democrats won’t say out loud about the controversial heir to one of America’s major political dynasties…

— Christopher, Esq. 🇺🇦 (@ChrisAlbertoLaw) October 5, 2023

This long read — imagine a wannabe Hunter S. Thompson as one of the politicians HST skewered, but with no sense of humor — came out in August. It’s worth reading, if only to understand just how much RFK Jr has turned into a standard right-wing paranoid, an aging crank with enough money and celebrity that he gets attention beyond his long-suffering ever-shrinking social circle:

On an overcast afternoon in mid-August, I find myself on a ferry to Nantucket with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—son of Bobby, nephew of John, Democratic candidate for president of the United States. Trapped between Kennedy on my left and a window facing the Atlantic Ocean to my right, it is no exaggeration to say this is the low point of my summer—a supposedly fun thing I wish I’d never done.

A couple weeks before, Kennedy had responded to an interview request by calling and expressing exasperation at various hatchet jobs in mainstream media and skepticism that a correspondent for Vanity Fair, a card-carrying member of the legacy media, might be fair to him. “Your editor won’t let you write anything positive,” he promised.

Kennedy had had a rough ride since the summer started (he was virtually set ablaze by New York magazine) and so I proposed that instead of raking over his many controversial ideas—like his belief that the media has been infiltrated by the CIA, as he told the right-wing provocateur James O’Keefe in an interview this year; or his claim that pesticides in drinking water are causing “sexual dysphoria” in boys, as evidenced by a frog study—we meet up at the Kennedy compound and talk about his family history. Lean into his Kennedyness, have a little fun. I was scheduled to be on Cape Cod for vacation anyway and figured I’d go take the cut of his jib…

When I arrive at the Hyannis Port compound, I’m told Kennedy is on a boat somewhere and running late. And so I idle in the dining room of his house, a white colonial with soccer balls on the lawn and bicycles piled against the siding. I peruse books on his shelf: Best American Crime Writing 2004; How Al-Anon Works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics; Anything for a Vote: Dirty Tricks, Cheap Shots, and October Surprises in U.S. Presidential Campaigns. There’s a photograph of Kennedy with a falcon on his arm and a picture of him and his brothers as young men, posing shirtless in an outdoor bathtub together. Near the front door are two iconic photos, one of the late Bobby Sr., holding his son; the other of John and Jackie Kennedy on a boat, Jackie’s scarf blowing in the wind…

Three days before my arrival, Peter Baker of The New York Times had published a story on the Kennedy family’s unhappy feelings about Robert’s campaign; his taking on their friend and ally Joe Biden; his claim that John, and possibly Bobby Kennedy, were assassinated by the CIA. “That’s the third story the Times has done,” Kennedy says grimly. “The same story, three times.”

“Well, I have a big family,” he says. “Some of them agree with me, some of them don’t agree with me. I think it’s like everybody’s family. People are entitled to their opinions. I can love people who disagree with me about the Ukraine war or about censorship, whatever.”…

He crunches some numbers. “I think there’s 105 cousins now,” he explains. “So I think four or five of them made statements against me. And then a lot of other ones showed up for my announcement.”…

… Kennedy insists he won’t run as an independent (“Even if I was going to run as a third-party candidate, which I’m not, I would probably take more votes from Trump than I would from Democrats”), but feeling unloved by the press, he has embraced people like Joe Rogan, to whom he can fire off his theories without being fact-checked in real time, and Fox News, where Sean Hannity has given him free rein to espouse what Kennedy calls his “malinformation” (supposedly factually accurate information that Democrats don’t want you to hear)…

By now it’s clear that Kennedy sees himself as the lone truth teller in a world of lies and deceit, crusading against a vast conspiracy of interlocking powers involving the Biden and Trump administrations, the tech companies, the pharmaceutical industry, the CIA, the FDA, and the mainstream media, who have coordinated to stifle the truth of a “three-year experiment performed on the American people.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., like his father and uncle before him, was born to slay dragons. “From my youngest days I always had the feeling that we were all involved in some great crusade,” he writes in his memoir, “that the world was a battleground for good and evil…It would be my good fortune if I could play an important or heroic role.”….

Old proverb: When God wants to punish you, He answers your prayers.

Primaries 2024 Open Thread: Iowa Surrenders, New Hampshire… Hesitates

by Anne Laurie|  October 9, 202311:06 pm| 46 Comments

This post is in: 2024 Primaries, Open Threads

Iowa Democrats finally bent to demands by the White House and the national party to exit the early window they long occupied. So the stage on January 15 will belong to the GOP. It’s now looking less like Biden has a problem in New Hampshire as well. https://t.co/bERi6WjZGj

— Intelligencer (@intelligencer) October 6, 2023

Ed Kilgore, at NYMag — “The Iowa Democratic Caucuses As We Knew Them Are Finally Dead”:

The death rattle of the hallowed First-in-the-Nation Iowa Democratic Caucuses took a while to subside. But now it’s done. Yes, Iowa Democrats will still get together in precinct gatherings on January 15, the same day when Iowa Republicans caucus to formally launch the 2024 Republican nominating contest. But thanks to a national party mandate insisted upon by President Joe Biden, there will be no presidential preference balloting at the Democratic caucuses. A separate, mail-in ballot process will culminate in the announcement of the results on March 5, Super Tuesday, safely outside the “early state” window Iowa once dominated, and in the midst of a cascade of votes that will confirm Biden’s nomination.

Iowa’s defenestration from the early-state window was caused by three interrelated factors that came together to overcome the first-in-the-nation tradition. First, Democrats have moved decisively to outlaw caucuses as a method for awarding national-convention delegates, compared to more open and inclusive primaries. Second, Iowa was deemed far too unrepresentative of the country demographically to maintain such a highly influential position on the nominating calendar. And third, the last Democratic Caucuses in 2020 were a huge mess with the state party unable to report the results on Caucus Night (though arguably national party mandates helped make that happen). You could add as a fourth, decisive factor: Biden’s poor performance in Iowa en route to his nomination and election; certainly the White House owed the state no favors…

Now the only apparent troublemakers left in the presidential nominating arena are New Hampshire’s Democrats, who have no choice but to follow state law and conduct a presidential primary on January 23; the DNC has demanded New Hampshire give way to the vastly more diverse South Carolina as the first primary state and vote instead on February 6, the same day as Nevada’s primary. The Republicans who control New Hampshire’s legislature have refused to play ball, leaving their Democratic counterparts to hold a rogue event that will cost New Hampshire at least half its delegation to the Democratic convention in Chicago next year, while creating the possibility of an embarrassing upset of President Biden, who won’t participate in a primary that defies his own calendar rules.

Most recently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has significantly reduced the risk of that happening by indicating he plans to withdraw from an allegedly “rigged” Democratic nominating contest to run as an independent, leaving Marianne Williamson as Biden’s only foe with any significant support. To be safe, New Hampshire’s Democratic leaders are planning a Biden write-in effort…

Playing cantankerous contrarian is always a popular role in New Hampshire, even if it doesn’t improve the state’s reputation elsewhere. (And, of course, for a state whose biggest industry is tourism, severely downgrading the quadrennial Running of the Journos ceremony is a nasty blow, so for once they have real reasons to bitch.) Per ABC:

… New Hampshire Democrats conceded that Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden is unlikely to be on the ballot in the Granite State’s Democratic primary, even as Iowa Democrats announced a change to their proposed caucus process that allows them to not conflict with New Hampshire.

The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws committee closed out its fall meeting in St. Louis on Friday by voting that another version of New Hampshire’s Democratic delegate selection plan was non-compliant with their new White House-backed calendar– a move that likely precedes Biden not filing to be on their state’s ballot…

In a copy of New Hampshire’s delegate plan reviewed by ABC News, the state’s Democrats maintained that their pledged delegates and alternates would be allocated proportionally to presidential preferences based on a primary — of which the date is not yet set.

The state’s district-level delegates would then be selected at a pre-primary caucus that would occur at least 17 days before the not-yet-announced primary.

Despite urging from the DNC, it is very unlikely New Hampshire Democrats will push Secretary of State David Scanlan to move the state-run primary in accordance with the national party’s schedule…

Some New Hampshire voters have voiced support for their state’s decision not to move back their primary, even if it means Biden would not be a choice for them on the ballot.

“I think it’s tragic that the current administration is not willing to participate in a process that has been in place for a very long time. It’s even tougher to understand when you factor in that Joe Biden didn’t win New Hampshire the last time around,” said Stephen Ivanoksi, a registered independent from Newington, New Hampshire.

Ivanoksi used to lean toward the Democrat Party, but not with the “elitism” it is now…

Uh-huh. Sure you did. But like 85% of NH’s other ‘independents’, you somehow always ended up voting GOP.

(Apart from saying she’s ‘running into a burning building, more than anyone knows’, Williamson doesn’t talk politics in the short WMUR video clip. She’s a new, first-time grandmother, and seems more interested in talking about ‘grandma gaze’ and flying to visit her daughter’s family in London. So, I guess, she’s taking her ‘campaign’ about as seriously as the rest of us are.)

Three quick housekeeping notes. First, and this is really directed at the folks in the Israel-Hamas war update, but I wanted to make sure it was clear: knock the fucking drama off!!!!! If you have a problem with a specific comment or commenter and you think it needs to be checked out, email me using the contact a front pager tool and I’ll take a look. Don’t post a dozen comments freaking out because one person posted a trollish, inaccurate, and irritating comment and everyone just ignored them. And if you feel the need to wonder in a comment if Balloon Juice is a safe place for Jews, well I’m Jewish, or I was when I put my pants on this morning, and I’m the one writing the posts. So I’m as sure as can be that it is a safe place for Jews. Unless you’re helium voiced Ben or that psychopathic stochastic terrorist woman from LA. Those folks would not be safe here.

Second, I have a busy day tomorrow so there may not be an Israel-Hamas war update. Or, if there is, it’ll be very brief.

Third, there’s basically a lot of posting on other sites that Wagner trained the Hamas militia that attacked Israel. It all sources back to the same Ukrainian government site. Treat these reports as RUMINT in service of Ukraine’s own Information Warfare campaign until/unless you see me include something with other legitimate and verifiable sourcing in an update.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Russia is interested in triggering a war in the Middle East to undermine world unity – address by the President of Ukraine

9 October 2023 – 20:25

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today was a very eventful day. Various meetings, and among them those related to the latest international developments are of particular importance.

I held a meeting with the heads of our intelligence, Main Intelligence Directorate and Foreign Intelligence Service, as well as with our diplomats on the situation in and around Israel and on the overall situation in the Middle East.

This is of fundamental importance for us – not only for Ukraine, but also for the entire Europe.

According to the available information – a very clear one – Russia is interested in triggering a war in the Middle East, so that a new source of pain and suffering could undermine world unity, increase discord and contradictions, and thus help Russia destroy freedom in Europe. We see Russian propagandists gloating. We see Moscow’s Iranian friends openly supporting those who attacked Israel. And all of this is a much greater threat than the world currently perceives. The world wars of the past started with local aggressions.

We know how to counter this threat.

We are preparing appropriate steps. And most importantly, we are defending the need for maximum unity in the world.

Today, I addressed the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, first of all, on the issue of unity. Every state in the world must now choose how it will defend international law. Defend! Not stand aside when terror tries to take over, and when another region of the world may collapse before our eyes.

I am grateful to all the leaders and states who are now fully aware of the danger and are ready to work together to keep the situation under control, to keep the obvious sponsors of terror from broader interference.

Today I also held a meeting with Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk. We coordinated our positions for the coming weeks.

I also met with Deputy Prime Minister Fedorov, Minister of Education and Science Lisovyi, and the ministry’s team. Working issues.

One more thing.

I have replaced the Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Anatoliy Barhylevych has been appointed commander instead of Ihor Tantsiura. The key task is that the development of the Territorial Defense Forces should not stop.

Thank you to everyone who cares about Ukraine and fights for our country! We are preparing a new reinforcement for our warriors.

I thank everyone in the world who has the courage to call a spade a spade and defend life and the rules-based order!

Glory to Ukraine!

As President Zelenskyy was saying:

https://twitter.com/JuliaDavisNews/status/1711038771951763734

While the Western world reacted with horror to the heart-breaking scenes of Hamas gunmen preying on Israeli civilians on October 7, the reaction in Russia was markedly different.

Kremlin-endorsed propagandists celebrated the fighting as a distraction to tear the West’s eyes from Ukraine, produced new conspiracy theories to explain the news, and delighted in the discomfort and fear of Russian Jews who have emigrated to Israel.

There’s as yet no evidence that Russia knew of the impending attack, although it has fostered ties with Hamas. In March, Hamas reportedly sent a high-level delegation to Russia and held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, warning the Kremlin that the group’s “patience” with Israel was “running out.” Senior Hamas figures also visited Russia in May and September 2022. The group has said its attack was supported by Iran and other countries but did not name them.

But while the Kremlin may not have been directly involved, many of its citizens are openly antisemitic, as are senior officials. Military correspondent Dmitry Steshin, known for his overtly genocidal statements about Ukrainians, posted on his Telegram channel Russky Tarantas that there should be “not a drop of pity or sympathy” for Israelis, including former Russian citizens. Steshin complained about people who left Russia for Israel, describing them as “relocants.”

He wrote: “We stayed here and are still standing knee-deep in blood. Let the ones responsible for our tears do that as well! Or let them run, to refresh their historical memory. Greetings to the relocants!”

Sergey Mardan, one of Russia’s best-known propagandists and host of the eponymous show on the state channel Solovyov Live, wrote on his Telegram channel that he was happy for the Russians who moved to Israel because they didn’t want to live in a country that is at war with its neighbors.

He added, “This mess is beneficial for Russia, because the globalist toad will be distracted from Ukraine and will get busy trying to put out the eternal Middle Eastern fire.” Mardan explained, “Iran is our real military ally. Israel is an ally of the United States. Therefore, choosing a side is easy!”

During his show, “Mardan,” the host made a bizarre comparison between Palestine and Russia, claiming that Russia “has been occupied since 1991” and is only now seeking to correct the situation. Russian propagandists frequently claim that Ukraine is “occupying” Russian lands, which Russia is fighting to reclaim.

Head of RT, Margarita Simonyan, wrote on her X/Twitter account, “The country that is not at war with its neighbors is again at war with its neighbors. We await the exodus of Russian pacifists. Then again, we won’t hold our breath.”

Host of the show “Morning Z” on Solovyov Live, Boris Yakemenko, blamed the violence on gender issues (presumably a reference to LGBT+ debates in the West), stating, “What is happening today in different corners of the world shows that the world has come to a dangerous point, beyond which lies the new world. Crossing into it will be preceded by horrendous casualties, because of a feeling of total injustice, insanity, a total lack of understanding of what is happening, with all of these genders, with all of these strange phenomena!”

Yakemenko read caustic messages from members of his audience, pondering which citizenship Russian relocants would choose this time. He addressed former Russian compatriots, telling them to “Go ahead and run, or hide in bomb shelters.”

During his show on October 7, Vladimir Solovyov, described the Hamas attack as a “loud slap” to Israel and its intelligence services, assigning all fault to America as a “guarantor of peace in the region” and baselessly blaming Ukraine for providing arms to Hamas. (Hamas’ main arms supplier is actually Iran).

Classic russian information laundering. How it works:

1, Russia promotes a nonsense story.

2, Their useful idiots & assets in the West repeat it.

3, Russian media then re-reports its nonsense but now using their own useful idiots & assets as the source of the story.

(The House Rep is Marjorie Taylor Greene, btw)

Beware: Russians continue pushing to their audience the agenda that armaments from Ukraine were used by HAMAS in the attack against Israel. As sources, they cite that silly video from two days ago and commentary from their own “political experts”. Just saw a few new articles on pro-Russian websites. These claims will inevitably emerge on this platform.

And here’s more from President Zelenskyy who wrote a very detailed thread about threats to global stability. First tweet from the thread followed by the rest from the Thread Reader App.

https://twitter.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/1711302805464445022

We see who in the world is trying to replace the power of international law with the horror of blood and disasters. We see whose deliberate investments in terror are destroying the lives of various people around the world, from Belarus to Mali. We see. And we must act together!
No one can forget what terrorists did in Israel. Thousands of missiles against peaceful cities. Shot civilian cars. Men, women, and children. No one was spared. Streets in blood. Hostages. The terrorists themselves shared the footage of their atrocities and were proud of them.
Israeli journalists who have been here in Ukraine, in Bucha, are now saying that they saw the same evil where Russia came. The same evil. And the only difference is that there is a terrorist organization that attacked Israel, and here is a terrorist state that attacked Ukraine.
The first dangerous thing is the shocking joy of Russian state-backed propagandists. They call children who are being held hostage by terrorists in Gaza “trophies”. Such a word. Just as Russia has captured thousands of Ukrainian children during its aggression against Ukraine.
And the second dangerous thing is the backing of what is going on… Iran can’t say it has nothing to do with what is going on in Ukraine if it sells “Shaheds” to Russia. Iran can’t say it has nothing to do with what is going on in Israel if its officials claim the support of it.
How far can such evil go? No further than we allow it to. Our unity must and can stop evil. Our desire for peace, not their desire for blood, should determine how the world lives. Our rules-based international order, and not their attempts to make death a rule.
Terrorist leaders ask, “What are the rules on which the international order is based?” As if they don’t understand. These rules are simple. Do not rape women. Do not kill. Do not consider children as trophies. Do not fill cities and villages with blood. Do not open fire at civilian cars. Do not hit peaceful cities with missiles and drones. And one more rule: under any circumstances, we must bring all terrorists and all those who help them to justice. Isn’t the power of the world enough to stop evil? I am sure it is.
Everyone who values life and peace needs to be as active as possible. This is not the time to withdraw from the international arena or isolate due to internal disputes. This is not the time to remain silent or pretend that terror on one continent does not affect global affairs.
Europe should be active. The US should be active. China. India. Arab states should feel how much can collapse if they allow terrorists to achieve their goals. Türkiye. Brazil and all of Latin America. Japan. Australia. Canada. African countries. Central Asian countries. Korea. Pakistan. Indonesia. The Caribbean. The Pacific states. Everyone should be active in the defense of life and international law! We must not give terror a single chance.
If there are real global sanctions for any sponsorship of terror, terror will lose. If the world unites whenever someone takes women hostage and kidnaps the children of another nation, terror will have no allies.
If the one attacked by terrorists receives all the weapons it needs to protect its people, international law will be the only force that will determine how the world lives. And the world will live in peace. This is our common goal.
I urge states and parliaments to be even more active for the sake of global unity. Let everyone who sponsors terror feel the power of our wrath. And let everyone who needs help defending themselves against terror feel the power of our solidarity.
Everyone can help prevent the chasm between the world and peace from widening. We must all be able to promise our children that we will pass on to them a world ruled not by blood shed by evil but by freedom guaranteed by law.
In my address to the NATO Parliamentary Council, I stressed that our unity must and can stop the evil. Be it a terrorist organization that attacked Israel, a terrorist state that attacked Ukraine, or other forms of terror threatening rules and international law around the world.

Fighters of the Ukrainian 3rd Assault Brigade took into capture a Russian officer in the rank of Major, a commander of the Alga battalion belonging to the 72nd Brigade. The video was published on their Telegram channel (subtitles added).

It’s a bit difficult to judge what exactly happened from the video, but probably the Russian battalion was unexpectedly attacked, which resulted in many casualties (by the Major’s admission).

“Recreation of the Leningrad Military District suggests that Russia is preparing for possible conflicts with Baltic states and NATO” – @TheStudyofWar

Interesting that this was noted. After the attack on Israel, which some call a “second front” (some Russians push this narrative), a test of NATO’s resolve to protect its own territory is possible. At the very least, provocations could be expected. Putin seems keen on setting as many areas on fire as possible.

I want to include this from my Israel-Hamas war update from earlier today:

Here’s the difference between the importance of Israel versus Ukraine in the US Congress as a result of the convergence of US domestic politics and religion:

https://twitter.com/yanircozin/status/1711370609395962164

Specifically, that the primary base of Israel supporters in the US is no longer Jewish Americans. Rather, it is white evangelicals who adhere to the made in America apocalyptic doctrine of dispensational premillennialism. This concept asserts that for Jesus to return that the Jews must first return to Israel where they vast majority will be killed in the battle of Armageddon. The few who convert to Christianity will be saved and survive. This doctrine is both antisemitic and genocidal. It requires the complete destruction of all Jews as part of white evangelicals apocalyptic fever dreams. However, since white evangelicals are the base of the Republican Party and have been courted and manipulated by Bibi for decades, you get unanimous Republican and conservative movement support for Israel, which is reflected in the Congressional support. Democratic support for Israel is largely based on the fact that over 75% of Jewish Americans vote Democratic and are either members of the Democratic Party or are Independents that align with and vote Democratic.

I expect that the House GOP caucus, as well as the Republicans running for president and the anti-Ukraine GOP senators, will use this to block further aid to Ukraine. The argument will be we can’t afford to support Israel, which we have to do because of our bilateral security agreement, and Ukraine at the same time. And since we don’t have a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine, well it’s just an unfortunate reality that the US is not made out of money. This will be pushed through Fox News, OANN, NewsMax, Breitbart, Bannon’s War Room, all the usual MAGA social media accounts. It will be picked up, amplified, and rebroadcast by the various Russian information warfare bot and troll accounts as well as the usual suspects in the US, the tankies, and the vatniks until it becomes conventional wisdom for the base of the Republican Party and the conservative movement.

I wish it would be otherwise, but the Biden administration’s intention to get a separate stand alone supplemental legislative package for Ukraine has been overtaken by events. They will try and I wish them the best of luck, but I fear that they have run out of time. Which means that in terms of more support from the US, the Ukrainians have run out of time as well. I will be very happy to have to come back to the front page in a future update, mark my beliefs to market, and state I was wrong on this. I do not expect that will be the case, but will do so if it should come to pass.

That’s enough for tonight.

Quiet Night

What’s everybody up to?

I am feeling kind of melancholy at the moment because it kind of feels like the world is on fire, and on top of that our 37 degree low tonight just turned into a prediction of 32 degrees, and the end of the garden season is just so sad for me.

Henry is hanging in his chair, with Tucker’s favorite snuggly animal.

That’s one of my swivel rockers from the screened-in porch,   The metal rod that allowed it to swivel and rock broke last fall, so I moved the now-short chair into the house, in front of the window to the street so Henry can hang out there with a better view of the street.

For those of you who don’t believe Henry has ears, you now have proof that he does!

Monday Evening Open Thread: Remember The Submarine Chatter at Mar-A-Lago?

(Clay Jones via GoComics.com)

NYT: Trump appears to have shared sensitive information about American submarines with billionaire member of Mar-a-Lago, Anthony Pratt.

That could help prosecutors establish that Trump has a long habit of recklessly handling classified information.https://t.co/t6gKQoaofU

— Citizens for Ethics (@CREWcrew) October 9, 2023

The inimitable Alexandra Petri, at the Washington Post, on Lord Marred-A-Largo and the Ginger TinTin — “How long can YOU be near Trump without learning secret information?”:

The more that comes out about Donald Trump’s post-presidency conduct, the clearer it becomes that the real challenge was not prying confidential information out of Trump but avoiding receiving confidential information.

I think I see the problem. Donald Trump has two modes of conversation. He is either ranting about all the things he intends to do when he becomes dictator of the country — so many rights to strip away! so much vengeance to extract against his enemies! so many guardrails to dismantle! — or he is volunteering classified information. Those are really it. If you don’t want one, you have to buckle in for the other.

Which brings us to the news from special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation that Donald Trump apparently shared sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines with an Australian billionaire. You might be wondering: Is this a private party, or can anyone play? Yes! All you have to do is pay money to be around Donald Trump by, say, attending a fundraiser or joining Mar-a-Lago, the most valuable golf club on the planet, valued at approximately $6 billion more than the sun, and you, too, can take the Trump Top Secret Challenge! See how long you can go without having Donald Trump just hand you some classified information…

show full post on front page

Anyone can try! If you win, they give you a T-shirt (printed all over with state secrets), but nobody has won it yet. Somebody came close, once, because she was at Mar-a-Lago during a weekend when Trump was absent, but she made the mistake of visiting the wrong bathroom and — boom! Nothing but boxes of classified documents. Now she knows all our sources and methods. She wasn’t even interested in the sources and methods, but she hadn’t brought her phone into the bathroom with her, and she needed something to read.

Presumably the Australian billionaire who reportedly learned about our nuclear submarines was also trying to do the Trump Top Secret Challenge. He thought he had a shot. Here he is, a foreign national, a cardboard magnate, with no obvious interest in naval warfare. (Usually, you can tell if a man has interest in naval warfare. That is one of the first things you know about him, usually.) Going into the challenge, his fear was that, knowing his passion for cardboard, Donald Trump was going to rush him to the bathroom and start showing off his collection of boxes, asking for his opinion on their absorption power and shape stability, and he might accidentally glimpse a secret that way. He had girded his loins against that possibility. What he was not prepared for was the fact that Donald Trump, any time there is a lull in conversation, will just tell you how close our nuclear submarines can get to a Russian submarine without detection…

It is one thing to walk into a meeting in the Oval Office and, say, be Russian. Everyone knows that Donald Trump loves to impress Russia. The odds were heavily against them. But researchers working on a book about somebody else mistakenly thought they had a shot. They weren’t even at Mar-a-Lago. That seemed promising. But no! Moments into the conversation at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., and the former president is waving classified documents at them. “Secret,” said Donald Trump. “This is secret information. Look, look at this!” Those are actual quotes.

This game is hard! But if you are willing to pay for proximity to the ex-president, you can play as many times as you like! Eventually, you’re bound to lose!

So Republicans blew a gasket when Barack Obama rocked his tan suit – but when Trump revealed sensitive nuclear submarine secrets to Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt at Mar-a-Lago who shared that info with dozens of other people – they’re crickets. pic.twitter.com/RlCBNOIsQI
