Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Let me file that under fuck it.

People are weird.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

… gradually, and then suddenly.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Mishmash and Hodge Podge Post

by WaterGirl|  October 8, 202311:00 am| 45 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

It’s been awhile since we had one of these Mishmash and Hodge Hodge posts!

In no particular order:

Ajabu Update (and FREE CD Offer)

Balloon Juice really came through for Ajabu with donations of $3,250!  As a special thank you to anyone who gave $100 or more, Ajabu would like to send you one of his CDs free of charge.  So if that resembles you, please send me your contact info so Ajabu can mail your CD!

Ajabu is kind of bummed that only the people who donated by check are getting CDs so far, so don’t be shy.  He paid for the CDs long ago, so the only cost to him is mailing, which is negligible.  He would really like to do something tangible as a thank you.

And, frankly, if you donated $25 but that meant you had to eat ramen noodles for a few days, I’m sure he would like to send you a CD, too.

I’m sure Ajabu will chime in below to share his infinite gratitude for helping him to get back on his feet.

Artists / Authors in Our Midst

I was horrified to discover this week that I had dropped the ball on an Artists post way back in 2020.  So if you ever contacted me about an Artists or Authors post, and I dropped the ball, don’t take it personally – let’s pick it back up!

And if you are an author or an artist who hadn’t contacted me previously, don’t be shy about getting in touch if you would like to share with us.

We have an Authors post scheduled for today at 2 pm.

⭐️

Quiltingfool Ukraine Quilt Raffle (or Auction)

Coming soon!

⭐️

$250 remains on the PatrickG Angel Match

We’re at $10,375 on the thermometer for our two Virginia delegates, with $250 remaining on the match.  I wouldn’t want our Angel to think his angel match wasn’t appreciated!

Thermometer is in the sidebar and is in the 3-dot hamburger menu on mobile.

⭐️

Possible Offer of a Match for Ukraine

Pretty sure I dropped the ball on this, too, because the timing wasn’t right and I was swamped.  Sincere apologies for that!  If that was you and you are in a forgiving mood and want to reach out to me again, please do.  Otherwise I will dig through my email and contact you with my abject apologies!

⭐️

Four Directions Zoom Coming Up Soon

I have spoken with the folks at Four Directions, and there’s a good overlap of their priorities and ours again for this cycle, so we’ll be setting up a zoom soon so they can tell us what they’ve been up to.

⭐️

Guest Posts on “What Has Biden Done for Me Lately” (on a personal level)

Some of you happily agreed to put together a guest post on how you have personally been impacted by some of Biden’s programs. If you are one of those people, could you drop me a line to let me know whether that’s still in the works or if you have changed your mind?

Either one is fine; I would just like to know.

⭐️

Balloon Juice Pet Calendar

It looks like Cafe Press still doesn’t have their calendar option available.

We are looking into Zazzle or some other option.

In the meantime, please start going through your photos for good, high resolution photos of your pets!   Because the timeframe for submission will be shortened as we figure out the road ahead.

⭐️

Postcard Writing & Music Posts

The postcard writing and music posts will be on Saturdays at 8 pm.  (skipping Tuesdays until further notice.)

⭐️

Talk of Meetups – Followup

oops, I planned to include this, but forgot.  I will be getting back to this soon.  I still have the original Talk of Meetups post open in a browser tab for followup.

⭐️

General Request

Work for my summer client pretty much kicked my ass this year, so I know I dropped the ball on some things.  Now that things are settling down, I would appreciate if you would follow up with me on anything I dropped the ball on.

Won’t Back Down (Open Thread)

Yesterday featured ideal tailgating and homecoming game weather: warm, but not too warm, sunny but with artfully distributed clouds to prevent overheating. Also, the Gators prevailed against the mighty Commodores of Vanderbilt, so that was good:

Florida Field during a football game

Lots of young dudes in the stands wore dress shirts, coats and ties paired with what we used to call Daisy Duke shorts back in the day, i.e., cut-off denim shorts that show a lot of leg. I assume it was a frat thing, but who knows?

Even with those beefy visuals, the highlight of the experience for me was ~90K people singing hometown boy Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down,” which means I am old. But mission accomplished for the trip — our niece definitely got an intriguing glimpse of festive college life.

I’m reading the news this morning to figure out what the hell is going on in the Middle East. The only solid conclusion I’ve reached is I wouldn’t have Joe Biden’s job for anything in the world. Good luck, everybody!

Late Night Open Thread: SBF, Performing 'Smartness'

There’s a temptation for people who do extremely well on IQ tests to turn themselves into performative contrarians, creating ‘logical’ arguments they can use in social settings to demonstrate that they’re just smarter, i.e. better, than the common herd. It’s a special danger for children whose parents prize this brand of intelligence, because it’s easy to fall into a bad habit of training their kid to perform at their grown-up parties, the way other parents demand guests listen to their kid’s latest piano piece or TikTok rap. And that mutual temptation, IMO, is why Sam Bankman Fried’s Stanford-professor ‘ethical specialist’ parents are also going to lose everything that’s important to them.

Just sloppy? Give me a break. Here’s How FTX Executives Secretly Spent $8 Billion in Customer Money https://t.co/4q2bTgYMDd

— Kara Swisher (@karaswisher) October 8, 2023

Rubbernecking, with the help of the Wall Street Journal:

The crypto exchange FTX went bust last year after executives spent billions in customer funds they had promised to safeguard.

The tab was $7.7 billion, a Wall Street Journal analysis of company disclosures and legal filings shows. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and senior staff spent customer funds on technology investments, luxury real estate and political contributions, among other things…

Customers say they had $16 billion in funds on the exchange before its collapse. So far, FTX’s new management has found $7.3 billion that could go toward paying them back…

So where did all the money go?

FTX spent big on investments in technology startups. For example, FTX paid $1.15 billion to acquire around 20% of Genesis Digital Assets, a crypto miner that ran a number of mining facilities in Kazakhstan.

The firm spent $243 million on real estate in the Bahamas…

There’s still around $1 billion of missing customer money that isn’t accounted for, and which could have been used by FTX to fund bad trades at its affiliate hedge fund, Alameda…

… Bankman-Fried took around $10 million from an Alameda account and directed it to an account owned by his father, Joseph Bankman. FTX lawyers said in court papers that Bankman has “been using this gift to finance Bankman-Fried’s criminal defense.” …

Puck‘s Theodore Schleifer, who’s been performing his own slightly-more-detached version of Michael Lewis for the last several months, on “S.B.F.’s Expected Value Calculation”:

… Prosecutors said Tuesday that a plea agreement was never offered, but even if there was one, this trial is happening for two reasons. First, don’t underestimate S.B.F.’s ego. Sam, as I’ve learned over three years of conversations with him, is supremely confident in himself, and a steadfast believer that plenty of the people around him—lawyers, other executives, some reporters—are idiots, or at least can be manipulated. The decision to not settle, in my view, is rooted partially in a belief that he can somehow weasel his way out of this, just like he has weaseled out of so much before.

But it is also a belief, some people close to him have posited, in the math—in the expected-value calculus that undergirded so many of S.B.F.’s choices and eccentricities. In short, is there a sufficient probability that he can find a single juror in the courtroom who believes he is innocent, unfairly targeted, or even just plain sympathetic? “I wonder if it’s his insane views on risk. Like, he might just think the E.V. is there and be committed like that,” one (former) friend said. “He might think a 20 percent chance of zero [time] is better than a 100 percent chance of 20 years.”

Only Sam can answer just how much Expected Value he would extract during prison—though in my time with him, I’ve always gotten the impression that he cares more about his reputation than about prison time. But let’s be real: Whether he gets acquitted probably doesn’t really matter, reputationally. How many people convicted Elizabeth Holmes before a jury even heard a single witness? There is little absolution coming based on the preponderance of information that has been unearthed about FTX, Alameda Research, etcetera. Whatever the jury finds is unlikely to change that impression etched into our culture. Perhaps Sam thinks that flipping the coin, as weighted as it may be, is the only option he has left…

And then there are the parents, Joe Bankman and Barbara Fried. Could they testify? Joe and Barbara are essentially part of Sam’s legal team, but plenty of people also hold them responsible for FTX’s risk-taking in Hong Kong and excesses in The Bahamas. And what about Sam’s brother Gabe, who oversaw his political and philanthropic operation, even though the campaign-finance charge is no longer on the table?

One person who worked for FTX told me that Joe and Barbara’s fall from grace made him more sympathetic to Sam. “I mean, I think it’s sort of worked on me in viewing him more favorably. Kinda like a variant of the ‘affluenza’ defense,” this person told me. “I’ll be honest, I’m pulling for him. Not that I think he has much of a chance of avoiding a long sentence.”…

In case you are too busy or high-minded to follow every trend: Musical icon Taylor Swift has been seen dating football player Travis Kelce, and therefore her fans (aka ‘Swifties’), who are not in general people to whom professional football has been targeted, are trying to understand this whole new-to-them phenomenon…

(Commentor Raven would hunt me down and kill me for this, except he knows I’m incorrigible.)

Football: Explained! pic.twitter.com/mRMwK3dVf3

— Bess Kalb (@bessbell) October 5, 2023

Samer Kalaf, at Defector , explains:

… Tayvis is a fascinating collision of two very famous people from distinctly separate worlds. It’s a little like learning that Santa Claus and the Statue of Liberty were spotted at a dimly lit bar in the East Village. Swift’s every act, no matter how mundane, is diligently documented: She was spotted “cleaning up after the game” and “doing a little dance” during the Tomahawk Chop. Additionally, @tswifterastour reported that during the game, the musician was “eating a piece of chicken with ketchup and seemingly ranch!”

As a pro football player, Kelce’s accustomed to media attention, but it’s at a different degree. Nobody’s monitoring what dip he uses for his pieces of chicken. NFL teams are by nature adversarial to press scrutiny, but Kelce has the benefit of playing on a successful team that won the Super Bowl last season, and he’s the best at his position, so there’s a little more goodwill offered him for inviting the spotlight. He’s also featured in practically every TV commercial playing during football games these days, so it’s not like he has a problem with getting his name out there.

The other reason why it’s so amusing to see these two together is because of how it forces these two fandoms to learn about each other. Swifties will become familiar with Andy Reid, while NFL fans will involuntarily form opinions on Matty Healy. Chiefs fans must purchase Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), while Swift fans have to scout the AFC West. That said, I don’t think they’ll have to get too deep into each other’s worlds, because this whole thing feels meticulously orchestrated and due to conclude by the time the NFL playoffs begin or Swift’s next album is released.

But not before the extremely opinionated right-wing Sports Guys, who have yet to forgive Swift for being a liberal who encourages her young fans to register to vote rather than the Aryan goddess of their dankest dreams, are all UP IN THEIR FEELS!!!

Since taking the vaccine, Travis Kelce has won the Super Bowl, been an all pro twice, and is currently dating the most famous woman on the planet
Since refusing to take the vaccine Rodgers started doing drugs in dark holes, got really into podcasts and tore his Achilles https://t.co/c9eU8K7T8R

— Evan Sowards (@EvanSowards) October 6, 2023

And now it’s on CNN!

… After last week’s Sunday Night Football game between the Chiefs and the Jets, Rodgers was asked by McAfee about the 23-20 loss and Taylor Swift attending the game at MetLife Stadium.

“There’s some sort of moral victory out there that we hung with the champs and that our defense played well,” Rodgers, who tore his Achilles tendon in his first game with his new team last month after 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, told McAfee.

“Pat (Mahomes) didn’t have a crazy game, and ‘Mr. Pfizer,’ we shut him down. He didn’t have a crazy impact game. Obviously, he had some yards and stuff, but I felt like for the most part, we played really tough on defense and played well the last three quarters.”

Both McAfee and co-host AJ Hawk laughed at the joke.

McAfee asked Rodgers again about the nickname, to which the 39-year-old quarterback said: “He’s doing commercials for Pfizer, so I’m sure he’s owning it.”

In 2022, while still with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers admitted to misleading the media about his Covid-19 vaccination status during an appearance on the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast.

Earlier that year, Rodgers said he had been immunized against the virus but a few months later, he missed an NFL game due to Covid-19 protocols and confirmed he was unvaccinated…

Taylor Swift’s new post urging her followers to register to vote has led to record-breaking voter registration numbers.

At least 157,041 eligible voters visited the registration site in one day, including a 115% increase in 18-year-old registrations.https://t.co/GzLxLzFjuL pic.twitter.com/0ULCaQgo4x

Horrible news from Israel. My condolences go out to everyone who lost relatives or close ones in the terrorist attack. We have faith that order will be restored and terrorists will be defeated.

Terror should have no place in the world, because it is always a crime, not just against a specific country or this terror’s victims, but against humanity in general and our entire world.

Anyone who resorts to terror commits a crime against the world. Whoever finances terror is committing a crime against the world. The world must stand united and in solidarity so that terror does not attempt to break or subjugate life anywhere and at any moment.

Israel’s right to self-defense is unquestionable.

All details surrounding this terrorist assault must be revealed so that the world knows and holds accountable everyone who supported and helped carry out the attack.

All Ukrainian citizens who remain in the risk zone must carefully obey all orders issued by local security services and remain vigilant. Please be cautious. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our embassy in Israel are ready to assist in any situation.

To support Ukrainians in Israel, we established an operational headquarters. If you require assistance, please contact any of our diplomatic or consular offices in any convenient and accessible manner.

Every life is valuable! We condemn all forms of terrorism.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below followed by the English transcript after the jump.

When terrorists attack, everyone who values life must stand in solidarity – address by the President of Ukraine

7 October 2023 – 21:32

Dear Ukrainians!

Today, since morning, I have been in constant contact with our diplomats and intelligence.

Due to the terrorist attack on Israel and the threat to our citizens in Israel, an operational headquarters has been established under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. All agencies and our embassy are monitoring information about Ukrainian citizens who may be in danger.

As of now, the information about the possible death of one Ukrainian citizen is being verified and the search for two of our citizens is underway.

As soon as the details regarding these people are verified, Ukrainian diplomats will announce it to the public.

Please, dear Ukrainians, if you are in Israel now, be as careful as possible. Follow the instructions of the security forces and take care of yourself and others around you. If you need anything, please contact our embassy by any means available to you – Ukraine will help all its people, no matter what.

Today, the whole world has seen horrific footage from Israel – footage of terrorists abusing women and men, taking even the elderly hostage without mercy… My condolences to all those whose loved ones have been killed! I wish a speedy recovery to everyone wounded.

When such a terrorist attack occurs, everyone who values life must stand in solidarity.

We in Ukraine are particularly sensitive to what has happened. Thousands of missiles in the sky of Israel… People killed right in the streets… Riddled cars with civilians… Abuse of hostages… Unfortunately, terror has also brought all this to the streets of Ukrainian cities and villages… Our position is absolutely clear: anywhere in the world, anyone who brings terror and death must be held accountable.

Today’s terrorist attack on Israel was thoroughly prepared, and the whole world understands which sponsors of terror could have encouraged and organized this attack.

Israel has every right to protect itself from terror. So does any other state. And it is very important for the whole world to respond to terror in a united and principled fashion.

No support for terrorists! Wherever they aim their missiles and whomever they attack, terrorists must lose. And this is important for the whole world. Human life, peace and tranquility of nations are equally important everywhere – in Asia, Europe, Africa, America and Australia. Everywhere.

Let the value of human life and the intolerance of terror be the principles that will finally unite the whole world.

Glory to Ukraine!

“Time is not our friend. We have enough funding authorities to meet Ukraine’s battlefield needs for a bit longer, but we need Congress to act to ensure that there is no disruption in our support,” said NSC spokesperson John Kirby.
via @JamesPoliti https://t.co/fnojnkGjZ3

— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) October 7, 2023

Here’s the details from The Financial Times: (emphasis mine)

The White House and pro-Ukraine lawmakers are growing increasingly alarmed about the future of US funding for Kyiv in the wake of Kevin McCarthy’s ousting as speaker of the House of Representatives, which has left military aid in limbo.

The risk of a lapse in American aid to Ukraine within a few months — a worst-case scenario for the Biden administration which has until now seemed unlikely — has risen in the past few days as chaos has enveloped the Republican party in Congress.

It has also triggered soul-searching in Washington over the impact of US political dysfunction on the administration’s foreign policy goals, as it tries to forge global alliances to counter Russian aggression and rising threats from China.

“Will we appease Putin and cut off aid to the Ukrainians? If we do, it will be our problem,” said Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat and the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a speech on the Senate floor this week.

“It just breaks the heart to see that we cannot put the national security of the country itself above the partisanship here in Washington,” said Heather Conley, president of the German Marshall Fund in the US.

Concerns have been compounded by the fact that Jim Jordan — one of the two leading candidates to replace McCarthy as speaker, who is backed by former president Donald Trump — has been openly sceptical of Ukraine aid, if not hostile towards it. Steve Scalise, the other top contender for the speaker job, has backed Ukraine funding in the past. But if he prevails it is unclear whether he would defy the right flank of the party with a vote to bolster aid to Kyiv.

“Jim Jordan is a real candidate to take over the House speakership and he voted against Ukraine funding. So I would be worried if I were [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and his team watching US domestic politics unfold from afar,” said Rachel Rizzo, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center, referring to the Ukrainian president.

Worries about the future of Ukraine funding mounted when it was omitted from legislation last Saturday to avert a government shutdown, at least until mid-November. President Joe Biden has tried to reassure American supporters of Ukraine and allies around the world that it would ultimately be approved.

Once McCarthy was removed from his post by a small group of Republican rebels and all Democrats in the House, though, it was harder for the White House to remain upbeat.

“Time is not our friend. We have enough funding authorities to meet Ukraine’s battlefield needs for a bit longer, but we need Congress to act to ensure that there is no disruption in our support,” John Kirby, co-ordinator for strategic communications at the National Security Council, told reporters.

Biden has noted that a majority of members of the House and Senate in both parties say they back continued funding for Ukraine. But he conceded that he needs to make a more concerted defence of US support to the American public.

“I’m going to be announcing very shortly a major speech I’m going to make on this issue and why it’s critically important for the United States and our allies that we keep our commitment,” he said.

The US president then convened a meeting of his top national security team to discuss Ukraine.

Biden is facing mounting pressure, particularly from Republicans in Congress who support aid to Ukraine, to deliver a much more definitive explanation of the US strategy in the war to help sustain public support.

“Your administration has failed to articulate a strategy outlining how US assistance to Ukraine will help them achieve victory over Russia, while also prioritising and advancing American interests,” Jim Risch, the top Republican on the Senate foreign relations committee, and Michael McCaul, the chair of the House foreign affairs committee, wrote in a letter to Biden on Friday.

“A pledge to support Ukraine ‘for as long as it takes’ is not a strategy,” they added.

The ramifications for Ukraine’s war effort of a possible reduction or lapse in funding are serious.

I have only been hammering on this point since March of 2022. Specifically that the US needed to get everything it could to Ukraine that Ukraine might possibly need and do so before the current Congress was sworn in last January. And I have been hammering on it precisely because it was both entirely possible that the GOP would retake the House and then the most extreme elements would cut off US support to Ukraine. Which is exactly what happened. Yes, the Republicans are ultimately to blame here as they’re the ones that want to cut off support and use the US’s support as a wedge issue against the Biden administration and Democrats going into the 2024 elections. But the Biden administration also cannot escape the blame here. They acted as if they had all the time in the world and that even a change in one or both chambers of Congress would make no difference. It wasn’t like the GOP caucus didn’t tell everyone what they were going to do:

Tweet thread between Ruben Gallego and Matt Gaetz regarding Ukraine war funding.

The Biden administration’s handling of this is strategic and political malpractice. It’s articulated strategy towards Ukraine is all over the map. Secretary of Defense Austin has made it clear that the US seeks an outcome that would prevent Russia from ever doing something like this again. The President and his other senior national security appointees have stated that they do not want any outcome that leads to Putin’s removal, Russia’s dissolution, or both. Those two policy outcomes – Secretary Austin’s and the President’s – are in opposition and cannot be reconciled. Do not get me wrong, Trump would be worse on this as would every Republican running to replace him. However, simply not-being Trump and being better than Trump is not a claim to success.
