Open Thread: Where Is The Love

On November 3rd, the United States will decide as a nation which path it would like to walk, a path which will affect generations to come. We want this video to be a reminder that in these unprecedented times, we must stand together. We must choose the path we would like to walk for our future, and whether that path is one of inequality and hate– or equality, unity, and love. We would like to formally invite you to #VOTELOVE this November 3rd. Thank you for watching. – Black Eyed Peas

There is so much we need to repair. We can’t let up on the accelerator until we have the WH, the House AND the Senate. And remind people their local races are equally important.

I was really touched by this.  It’s from this article, which also features that awesome photo of the two of them in that convertible.

The photo, BTW is by Pari Dukovik, taken for a 2016 article in Popular Mechanics titled "Things My Father Taught Me: An Interview with Joe and Hunter Biden. Here are 2 more the majority of Americans will love. https://t.co/VgzjTTfj3v pic.twitter.com/f5eoMjFrPj

Sigh, last night another fire blew up, west of Estes Park. The entire town of Grand Lake is evacuated and the fire has almost reached the continental divide. It sounds like the fire has spared Grand Lake itself. The fear is, with the forecasted winds between now and Sunday, the fire could cross the divide and threaten Estes Park as well.  That’s three large fires, all in the northern section of Colorado. Watching the slurry planes and water helicopters working is eerie.

Open Thread: Colorado From Cherry Red to Midnight Blue

Okay, it’s more deep purple to blue, but I needed an excuse to listen to Lou Gramm.  Although when I moved back here in the early 90’s it was a cherry red state. But we fixed that.

I know we are not Texas-level electoral college numbers (and you keep on moving that needle Texas) but I was pleased to see the latest polls for Colorado:

Colorado President Poll

There have actually been a few ads for the orange disease on television that I’ve seen. One directed at the Latino community that is just awful. Fear-mongering, intimating that they are afraid to say they’ll vote for the Orange one out loud, so they are part of the “silent majority.”

The entire ad is done in silence with a terrified looking woman sitting on a bed flipping poster board notes (seriously it looked like they were holding her hostage and making her flip these cards or they’d kill her dog), and telling us her silent vote was “for the children.” I refrained from throwing something at the television.

Biden has had very few ads as well. Much different than 2008 and 2012 when we were quite the prize for the DNC. I prefer being ignored. Though the Doug Emhoff was in town last night!

Looks like we’ll flip that Senate seat:

Senate race Colorado

show full post on front page

Cory Gardner has run the WORST campaign against one of the most popular Governors in recent history. His final salvo has been, “hey it’s better to have a Democratic Senator AND a Republican Senator to get things done, showing sunny photos with him and Sen. Michael Bennett. Bennett quickly came out and reminded everyone he was supporting Hickenlooper.

Colorado Senate 2

Finally:

Supreme Court Colorado

Despite having a poorly worded and confusing abortion ban proposition on the ballot that is polling tooclose for comfort, support for pushing through a new justice is lower than the actual abortion proposition. So I guess that’s good news.

Lots of good video and more details about the polling at this link: 9News

That’s probably more than you wanted to know about Colorado politics! But would love to hear what your state looks like 25 days out from the election.

Otherwise, open thread

Point And Laugh: GOP Hunger Artists Edition

This is old news, I know, but I don’t believe we’ve had a jackaltariat-wide chance to scorn embattled (a/cliche alert. b/understatement) Senator Martha McSally (R-HoofInMouth) for her latest plea for funds.

Down in the polls and behind in fundraising, Arizona Sen. Martha McSally is telling her supporters to “fast a meal” and donate the money to her campaign instead.

…”If you can give a dollar, five dollars, if you can fast a meal and give what that would be,” McSally told her audience on an audio recording obtained by Arizona’s Family.

Point And Laugh: GOP Hunger Artists Edition

Well, sure. I’m going to skip dinner so that I can send a sawbuck to a senator from the party that’s on record as being OK with crushing Social Security. Starve for granny-starvers.

At least back in the day, clueless autocrats would allow us the dream of cake. Now, all we get is wind-pudding.

Election 2020: Winning the Ad Game

by TaMara|  June 6, 20209:43 pm| 110 Comments

This post is in: 2020 Elections, Biden For President, Open Threads, Politics, Take Back The Senate 2020

The Lincoln Project Biden ad was what started me looking for other ads. And Biden campaign dropped the “Doesn’t Care” this morning.

Posting these videos isn’t a comment on their policies or chances. I just went looking for campaign videos to see how things were looking.

They are not all barn burners, but I think they fit their constituency. Dr. Bolier, a former Republican, knows what she’s up against and healthcare seems like a winning strategy.

Compared to her original campaign announcement, Amy McGrath seems almost tame in this video. I know nothing about KY politics except they produced McConnell and Paul, so fuck them.

Mark Kelly has a couple of good ads up – one on healthcare, another on middle class/education, but I liked this one with Gabby.

MJ Hegar is still winning the game in my estimation. Family, military, health care, humor…

For the remainder of the Senate candidates, they need to up their ad game IMHO, but it’s early yet and campaigns are expensive. Bullock of Montana website is sad and I found no videos. Some are still in primary campaigns – Colorado’s Hickenlooper, Maine’s Gideon (and what’s going on in Maine – I thought their primary was March 3 – or is it like CO – separate primaries Pres and then the rest?).

Again, if you see an ad you like or a particular position taken by someone that’s looking to flip a state or district, send it my way.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Senior adviser says Democratic Montana Gov. Steve Bullock will file to run for Senate against Republican Steve Daines.

— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) March 9, 2020

Governor Bullock (D-MT) is about the only Democrat in Montana who has a plausible chance of flipping that Senate seat.

Right now, the Democrats need to net at least three seats and the VP for control or a net of four flips for outright control.

The Cook Political Report has the current state of play as the Dems down a seat (Alabama) with four GOP seats in Toss-up (North Carolina, Maine, Arizona, Colorado). Recent polling by one firm has all four of the Republican candidates trailing by a handful of points. There are a few other “stretch” seats that are currently leaning Republican but could get swept up in a wave. Adding Montana to that list increases the number of plausible pathways to a slim Democratic majority next January.

The Senate Is In Play

I know many of us are disappointed about two old guys (no offense to any old guys) looking to be the final two standing in the Democratic primary. I’m hoping Elizabeth stays in for as long as she can, so we can continue to hear her important plans and ideas. Stay and make sure she has a seat at the table.

In the words of the indomitable Shirley Chisholm,

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

Meanwhile, polls are giving some good news. I know in Colorado, Gardner is for sure in trouble. And I suspect Mark Kelly’s chances are pretty good.

I will have a respite thread later today, probably ducks and kitties. Maybe handsome Bixby after his bath.

… because if *this* person is her opponent in November, Susan Collins will win reelection handily:

As a Maine resident, I can personally testify that more guillotine jokes are what redneck lobstermen and retirees want to see in politics https://t.co/FypRpccuTl

— Sneer Review (@TheSneerReview) February 9, 2020

According to the local Press-Herald, Kidman is an attorney who’s running in the Democratic primary, hoping to garner the existing $4million ‘Susan Collin’s opponent’ pot. I guess it’s not easy, getting legal work in Portland — ‘earned media’ is cheaper than buying tv ads.

Of course they have only the very best intentions…

We’ll be giving these shirts (& patches & buttons) to folks who talk with Mainers about our campaign to #StopElectingTheRich and #ShowUpForME.

More details on how to get your GuilloTee tomorrow! In the meantime, remember: there is not going to be a more convenient revolution.

Show Up for ME… Irresistable as a hashtag, I guess, but SRSLY?

I’m aware of the French Revolution, and how the story ends. A guillotine t-shirt reminds others about it in hopes that we’ll all be motivated to address the very serious problems with our government before a similarly violent uprising becomes inevitable.

— bre?️‍?kidman??for?Maine?(D) (@BeeKay4ME) February 8, 2020

Obvious question, answered:

Thanks for asking! AFAIK, I’m the only candidate in the race who‘s endorsed Bernie. I identify as a democratic socialist and I believe no industry which derives profit from denying us healthcare has a right to exist. Also support public-owned utilities. Happy to chat more!

— bre?️‍?kidman??for?Maine?(D) (@BeeKay4ME) February 7, 2020

Not helping. Well, not helping Democrats. Which is, I suppose, on brand for the Rose Emoji gang.

I think you need to take the L here
